Hungry Fish Evolution is, well, more Russian shovelware polluting the bottom end of the Steam store. This is an ultra simple ClickTeam Fusion construction kit arcade game. Move a fish around a single screen level, eating other fish to get points. There's an upgrade system and as the screenshots show, you can colour in the fish. Wow, amazing. While this is stretching the limits of the craptastic ClickTeam Fusion construction kit (a true blight on gamers), it's not even coming close to pushing the envelope for a PC game.
The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game. It's a minimum viable product dumped on Steam to grab a few roubles, and isn't worth anyone's time, it's just not a serious game.
Case in point, this was so lazily done, when you move up and down, the fish just "teleports" up to each of the flat planes the fish swim on... it really is a joke how shallow and lazy this game is.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the Clickteam Fusion construction kit - the "No-Code" construction kit that "Anyone can make games with!!". Including, you know, people who aren't game developers. Which is a problem. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur developers as it's free (so they don't have to pay for GameMaker Studio) and doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities (it's arguably worse than GameMaker Studio). Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game?
Hungry Fish Evolution is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
help me.
Unfun its simple but it does nothing to add excitement to its gameplay and found myself bored at the very first level not worth it.
I initially recommended this game, but I'm going to have to change it after playing it for a bit more...
A nice simple game (you're a fish eating other fish) - easy controls, nice aesthetics, promising upgrade system.
However, the defining drawback is that, no matter how good you are, the game is far too grindy to get most of the upgrades, which effectively locks out the end game. The reward/upgrade system really limits what you can play without feeling like you're playing a chore.
EDIT: Having played a bit more since my review (which I stand by), I have two suggestions to improve the game (and would change my review to a recommend). (1) Improve score to pearls ratio. (2) Increase the conversion rate options between pearls and gold (100 is too small when you're expected to farm 1000s of pearls).
EDIT 2 (this will be my last, I promise): Having played a bit of survival now, I've noticed two things, which I think are bad for the game. (1) As you buy upgrades for your fish, your rewards get WORSE each game. (2) There is zero difference in reward between survival mode difficulties.
It's a nice game, but the demoralising grind hampers the purpose.
Hungry Fish Evolution, is a fun game. A bit short, but over all fun. Short as the main part of the levels in the game, goes. But for the price point, not bad of a game. Also I like how to can colour your fish, plus the power up help add to the game play.
Not worth it even for $0.99 unless you like to get rude and snarky replies from a dev who thinks too highly of themselves. Don't bother leaving bug reports or suggestions, or you'll end up like the fish in this game (so so the dev seems to think).
When I played this, it was basically unplayable. Hunger decreased too quickly, your fish moved too slowly. It was not fun and was just stressful.
Def do NOT recommend.
In a way- a Hardcore game, with nice atmosphere and music.
Cons:
-the controls are a bit clonky
- the graphics may seem simple
Pros:
+ Music is relaxing, with variety of tracks
+ Interesting concept of 2D Fish customizer (the painter)
+ satisfying and easy to pick up gameplay
