Rating: ★★★★★ - Amazing
Time Played: 2.6 hours
Gameplay:
• Short fast-paced side-scrolling shoot'em up with tight, responsive controls.
• A wide variety of weapons, ship parts, bombs, missiles and upgrades to customize your jet, catering to experimentation of different playstyles.
• Challenging but fair difficulty that ramps up as you progress, requiring quick reflexes and strategy.
• Levels are diverse, with unique enemies like pirates, bugs or a beer bottle (I know what I said) and environmental hazards to keep you engaged.
• Occasional difficulty spikes may feel frustrating but are rewarding once you find a well suited loadout.
Story\Dialogue:
• Story? I don't know. I didn't read the mission statements. Game is focused more on action than narrative and is all the better for it.
Graphics\Music:
• Crisp, colourful drawn art with detailed environments and smooth animations that are much improved from the jank of the first game.
• Explosions, camera shake, slow motion and visual effects are combined satisfyingly without overwhelming the screen.
• The heavy metal soundtrack is a standout, perfectly complementing the high-octane gameplay.
• Sound effects are bassy and impactful and contribute to the heavy metal atmosphere.
Before you Play:
• Feel free to only play this one. Don't play the first game 'Jets'n'Guns Gold' as it is a considerably worse and unpolished experience.
• Start with Casual - Normal Mode and once completed, continue to more difficult tiers (New Game+) as the levels are much more excitingly intense.
• Experiment with different weapon and mod setups early to find what suits your playstyle.
• Play with a controller for better precision.
Short but enjoyable
This really was...something. Sadly that something is yet another attempt to make a sequel for a classic game but missing the mark, which is weird because JNG1 was made by the same people that worked on this game. The new graphics, music, enemies and ideas are really awesome but design can only carry a game so far.
First of all, this might be a personal thing because i got really used to JNG1 since i kept playing it along the years (we are talking the old 2004 version) but this games balancing feels all over the place. A bunch of levels feel like a breeze then other levels feel like a 2D shooter version of dark souls. Not only do you die over and over until you memorise the layout of every enemy, but the bosses can be very unforgiving too. And i think this might be intentional with how short some of the levels are. The worst offender being the beer level. 3 fun levels from the original game turned into an atrocity of a level with one of the worst boss designs in all of gaming. The fight is literally impossible to win without a rear weapon as the very last part of the boss is unreachable otherwise and the player never gets any heads up for that so they have to abort the level and do it all again. Wow if only we had something to warn us like the comics in the first game, right Rakes?
The variety and design choices for the shop is really weird. Ship choices are fully gone, youre stuck with the same one forever. Now that wouldnt be such an issue if changing ships didnt actually have a use. You dont get different stats, weapon slots, missile slots, etc. anymore. I get that everyone just used the mad emu when they got to it in JNG1 but all other ships are usable before you unlock the emu. A bunch of weapons from the first game make a return which is cool and theres a few new weapons but theres a lot less weapons overall and theres ones that are just blatantly better. Like who would ever use peashooter after unlocking daisycutter, its literally the same weapon but better. At this point why not just insert all guns from JNG1 and call it a day? More than half the loadout is guns from the first game anyway. Also its absolutely horrible how you can only get 1 copy of a gun and if you want a shop refresh, you have to win a level. Even worse is how you can buy multiple of the same ship upgrades but the game just deactivates the second. Wow thats so cool guys, if only you just made the upgrade system like in the first game to let us enjoy them all and make it look like you actually took time to polish the shop.
The amount of content in this game is like not even 30% of JNG1 so i think its absolutely insane to charge double for this. Especially if the buyer isnt a completionist, they finish this in 2-3 hours and theyre done forever.
In conclusion, this game is just a modernized, soulless cashgrab trying to imitate a predecesor who actually did a very good job.
Perfect SHMUP for those who like to play the ones where you have a shield, so that you are not instantly killed by a single projectile. Loads of fun! For those who love Tyrian, Raptor,... and of course the first Jets 'n' Guns game.
For twice the price of its predecessor in the series, players are given less customization, levels, and attention to detail and instead provided a slight update in graphics and item transactions such as full refunds. There is no real feeling of progression as cutscenes, as motionless yet charming as they were in the first game, have completely been omitted therefore reinforcing how arcade-like the sequel is with its short-lived levels and early difficulty spike which sets the precedent for later levels to be ever demanding yet ever unrewarding. Jets'n'Guns 2 is the definition of daylight robbery.
Right from the start, when you get to the start screen, the game hits you hard with the soundtrack. And from then it just delivers on that vibe.
Very cool guns and equipment combos you can set up. I felt all powerful at the end :-) (I define the end as the point where you don't get more new equipment, but you can continue forever).
I really like this game. It is better than its predecessor in many aspects. The graphics, UI, upgardes, gameplay and the flow. Its just more fun to play (at least for me)
There are only 2 problems:
- It is WAY too short. I did beat it in 2 hours
- There is no feel of progression. Every weapon is available from the start. No other ships to unlock
I can't recommend it for full price, but at the same time I dont want to give a thumbs down. Its such a good game but its a shame that its so short
6 hours for main campaign, lots of fun, great music levels are crazy
Pure awesomeness, much like its predecessor
Extremely short and shallow compared to the first game. It is a good and fun game, i love it and bought it immediately it came out. If it had proper online coop, then it would be amazing.
Great soundtrack, explosive gameplay, nice variety of weapons & options.
Level-wise = little short, but still fun.
Achievement-wise = doable, but be prepared for hardcore mode, playing same levels to difficulty 10 (10x same missions over and over) and mortal kombat + tetris baby.
it's good, and brings the franchise up to date, but it makes me sad that this game feels so unfinished. it has so much less than the first game. first game had more levels, more ships, more weapons, just plain more of everything. in many ways, i still prefer the first game.
Enjoyable! This game reminds me of the old shareware demos that often arrived with magazines such as CD gamer, alongside the more "major" releases. It has that oldschool type of indie-game feeling that is hard to find these days. The game itself is a very simple side-scrolling action game, and the graphics are very nice and detailed, although things can get quite cluttered at times. An easy recommend for me, though the price-point is maybe a bit too high for my tastes.
i haven't played JnG 1 in a long time but if you liked it back then you like part 2
it's more of the same in a good and bad way - many levels seem to be like the ones in part 1 - that means graphic sets as well as the level design - a lot seemed well known.
one thing is (on normal) you cannot farm the levels multiple times, don't know if it was the same in part 1, but that makes the game sometimes frustrating if you want to upgrade or buy new weapons.
I love the first game. But this "Sequal" is a downgrade in almost every way.
This game is much shorter and is lacking in the gameplay diversity of the original. You don't get to fly or buy any different ships. The story is told though description boxes when selecting the different planets, instead of the awesome comic panels from the first game. And the story itself is boring and has nothing to do with the original.
A couple of positives for it would be that you can replay any specific level you want. And There are a lot of ways to customize the equipment on your ship.
I also found the game somewhat buggy. There was a point where the final boss glitched out and I wasn't able to damage it, forcing a restart. The music would sometime cut out. And the menus were kind of spastic.
About the only thing that may be a definitive upgrade is the music. It has a really good soundtrack.
I'm giving this game a positive review even with its problems.
The games core gameplay, visuals and movement are leaps better than the original in every aspect but it heavily lacks in levels only taking 1.3 hours to complete compare that to 1 which took around 11 for a first time play through.
It also lacks elements from the original like new ships where changing ships drastically impacts the gameplay.
Another problem is that the game is far to easy even on hard, yes the games built around you going to NG+++++ for the difficulty but not many people in general go for NG+ in games also in the original you get new ships when doing NG+.
Very disapointed in J&G1 & 2 as they both DO NOT RUN ON STEAMDECK! Both crash to desktop. Tried everything, no such luck. They both play well on PC. These type games are perfect for the SD TOO. . .
So fun !!
Too short a story, less than 2 hours and I finished.
