We need a Kaze 2!!!!!!!
Great Donkey Kong Country clone, recommend to anyone who likes old school DKC and DKC2. Finished everything minus the no damage badge on 2 of the 35 levels, and a full game speed run attempt. May try those last 2 achievements at a later point, but for now I am satisfied and happy I got to play this.
Got it on sale for $3, would not have been upset to pay full price ($15) for this.
Edit: I have no self control and had to go back and finish those last few things. Now it is officially 100% complete woot!
World 1? 10/10
World 2? 4/10
Auto scrolling level design is cancer. Camera is too zoomed in so you have to memorize what to do.
One checkpoint per level itself causes a lot of frustrations. The game needed more checkpoints.
Hitboxes are spotty. Missing things by pixels is never my idea of fun.
Feels like they wanted to make the game hard rather than fun. They succeeded.
This is such a great game! It is very polished, it manages to feel new and nostalgic at the same time! I totally recommend it to anyone who likes games resembling the Snes era! Great job to the developers!
This is a solid love letter to Donkey Kong Country. The variety in levels and mechanics, collectibles, and bonus stages are very evocative of 90's sidescrollers, and the devs clearly understood what made those games click. The amount of care put into the animations and the overall polish of the game are icing on the cake. Definitely recommended to fans of platformers.
I didn't expected this game to be "I Wanna Be The Boshy" with a rabbit.
The game is CRAZY HARD. From the literally second location.
I STRONGLY do not reccomend to buy it, even if you like retro-platphormers, cause this one is too much frustrating.
And, like Boshi, it is made frustrating ON PURPOSE
This is Original Recipe DKC from the SNES era. Not the floaty Retro knockoffs.
If you've been craving the Rareware magic, this is the closest you're going to get.
DKC style game. Gameplay is really good and responsive.
Probably one of the best DKC clones I've ever played.
Everyone should play it!
Really enjoyed the early levels, later ones really annoyed me, hitboxes sometimes feel great, sometimes rob you of your jumps.. and so many autoscrollers in a speedrunning game?
Rating: 7.5/10. Fun platformer but nothing revolutionary. Pretty difficult
Really solid platformer with great music and pixel art. Felt a lot like Donkey Kong Country 2, but in glorious widescreen. Level design is professional with every object, enemy and obstacle being carefully placed and well considered. The levels have a great sense of pacing as well with fast, high intensity levels being followed by slower, more deliberate ones. Overall, I think it's just as good as a lot of modern Nintendo platformers but at a fraction of the cost.
One of the simplest yet best 2D platform games I had the pleasure to encounter at Steam.
The controlls are responsive, visuals are cozy and takes you back to some amazing other games you probably played, like Buster Bunny's Hidden Treasure, Zueirama (you can get it on steam btw), Sonic from genesis, etc.
Straight to the point: jump, attack, go right and relax. That's all you need.
ps: I love Kaze, The Bunny. It's a mix of Tails and Buster Bunny.
Kaze'z gameplay has the forward momentum of a game like sonic, mixed with the precision platforming of the donkey kong country series. I wish the game was a little longer, but every level feels fun and unique from one another, and offers a decent challenge. Definitely recommend if you enjoy any platformer classic from the 90's and beyond.
fun
Nice Platformer.
Gotta say I rolled my eyes hard at the second island, is there no platformers without universally hated ice levels? They are never liked yet you see them in nearly every platformer. At least only one or two levels on that island had slippery ground.
Everyone getting it, consider the easier difficulty. It gives you one health point more (max 3 instead of 2), whch is not the important part. It also gives you more checkpoints. I probably just don't have the patience to do large swaths of levels time and time again any more, but that was a godsend.
If you like the original 3 Donkey Kong Country games, but don't mind if it is single-player only, then give this a shot. While it would have been nice to see a little more innovation, co-op mode (akin to the original DKC games, not the new ones), and a more fleshed out world, this is still a very fun game that scratches that itch from the 90's.
Kaze is classical fast paced platformer. You play as a rabit. From time to time kaze wears mask which transform here to other animal: tiger, owl or shark. Each animal has a few unique moves. These moves chain providing combinations. Games is quite hard but not as hard as Celeste or Super meat boy. It provides fun way of spending about 6 hours.
The beginning of the game felt great. It has interesting exploration, mostly balanced difficulty level and some interesting mechanics in enemies in bosses.
Unfortunately, from about half way point it started being more and more annoying. Like 6 out of 8 levels in the two final worlds are auto scrollers. Some of them are auto runners as well. The exploration is much less interesting and it's just rush rush until the end.
Also, the game has weird technical glitches where it resets your saves depending on how long your steam is open (it seems so, that's the only idea I have).
Overall it's a bad experience, though it had a decent start.
Loved every bit of it! I'm so glad some people are still making games like would be found on the SNES!
It's basically an off brand Donkey Kong Country game and should be great for any fans of that series, especially the older more difficult titles.
The Game feels like Donky Kong Country and Rayman in the good old days.
This game was great surprise. I thought it would be just another unappealing platformer. So much so that I only bought it because it was on a discounted price. But oh boy, was I wrong! It is really addictive and fun! I almost got all achievements, which I usually don’t care for, and the ones I didn’t get I will get. Someday… Anyway, this is not a game that hardcore gamers will find challenging enough, but regular players who have a job and a family to care for will find this game interesting and fun!
A fantastic 2D platformer that borrows heavily from Donkey Kong Country 2, but with more emphasis on flow and chain-bounding off enemies. Hidden bonus rooms, collectibles, time trials, and no-damage runs give stages a fair bit of replay value.
This game is a great well-rounded platformer that has tight controls for precision moves and unique mechanics to keep the experience interesting the whole way through. There were some frustrating parts that made me put the controller down for a break, but I was always able to come back and overcome the challenges with persistence. The level design gets tough, but not soul crushing kaizo hard, and the option to switch out to a more casual mode is a welcome one. The story, art, and music all show a steady high standard of quality, it all left me very satisfied.
4/10.
Really good DKC-style platformer with tight mechanics and tough but fair difficulty. The masks provide fun variety to the gameplay by letting you transform into a tiger or a shark, or even a hawk, too.
Very good 2D platformer. Fair but challenging. The enemy designs feel fresh and I have really like the overall vibe in the levels. The boss fights are annoying, thankfully there aren't too many of them.
This game should have a positive review from me. i even bought a physical copy, which i have now returned. i have played and completed many titles, this will not be one. It gets difficult, there are even auto run levels, this should be okay, but if it is getting crazy difficult, give us a chance to save. it should be an easy fix for what would be a brilliant platformer, excellent graphics, brilliant music. But i dont recommend it. for a really good platforming experience in a relative new title, there are not so many, mo astray, or unbound, messenger. come to mind.
kinda like rayman legends
Dunno about this one. It strikes me as somewhat overrated. It's certainly fun in parts, but even the "casual mode" becomes annoyingly, grindingly hard after the initial world. (There are only four short worlds, though.) Graphics and music are okay (not amazing); there's no real storyline. And every enemy and mechanic in the game is borrowed (plagiarised) from Donkey Kong Country: it's truly shameless. So even if you like DKC you might find this rather too unoriginal to be interesting.
Got all yellow and green crystals and beat the game in about 6 hours. If you like DKC2, this is likely up your alley. Would recommend grabbing at below $20 though as it is a bit short.
If you like the classic Donkey Kong games, do yourself a favor and buy it.
The game can get quite challenging in places and the platforming feels great, very smooth.
Kaze imitates Donkey Kong Country as much as it can.
You're collecting 4 letters in each stage, there are bonus barrels hidden in stages.. Many of the same types of enemies.. A helicopter spin to hover in the air like Dixie Kong..
Many of the same tricks DKC uses to change up the platforming in levels are present here too, like:
-A blowing wind the stops and starts, requiring you to time your jumps with the movement of the wind.
-Barrels that you jump into and use to launch into other barrels (in the form of crossbows/slings here)
-A stage where you need to constantly flick the light switch on/off.
-Minecarts (not an actual minecart, but the same effect via the dragon mask).
-Slime Climb
This list could go on and on.. and it all probably sounds great if you're a fan of that series (I am. Big fan).
Unfortunately Kaze is a bit of a poor mans Donkey Kong. The game doesn't have as much charm all over really. The animal buddies in Donkey Kong Country were more organic and charming than the masks that fulfil the same role here. The cutscenes in this game I ended up skipping because they were quite basic and uninteresting.
The music in this game is dull compared to the moody melodies composed by David Wise for DKC. You can hear a bit of inspiration in this, but without some good melodies it's ultimately resulted in dull background music rather than moody & melodic foreground music.
There's some missing features and QoL issues when comparing this to DKC too. ..Like how you can't change which side of a rope you are holding onto.. Or how you are normally pressing B to hover in the air, but when you're transformed into a particular form it instead does a down smash, which out of habit you will press intending to tailspin. ..Lots of little things like that which add up to remind you that you're playing something of lower quality.
The game is pretty short. The levels themselves are pretty short too, and none of them ever open up as much as some DKC levels did.
If you're unaware of it, check out Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It was made by some of the guys who did Donkey Kong Country and they even got David Wise to compose for it. I'd say it's a better game, with a really nice hub world to explore between levels. In fact, that's another little thing that Kaze could do better. The map and hub screen is less interesting than that of DKC, it doesn't capture my imagination in the same way. It feels like I'm just on a level select screen, rather than exploring a continent, wondering what that next area on the horizon is.
The Game Boy versions of the Donkey Kong Country games were quite good also, I think Donkey Kong Land 2 might actually be my favourite of the series somehow.
While Kaze could be bigger, better and more charming compared to DKC, I admit that it actually gets a lot of it right as well, and to cut it some slack; DKC left some big shoes to fill. Kaze is worth a look if you loved DKC, but don't expect it to rival the excellence of that franchise.
I hope these devs go on to make another game in a similar vein, but change their composer and try to improve on a lot of it.
Amazing graphics (really!), sharp platforming, fair gameplay, fun theme, optional difficulty & challenges, fair price. This is among the best platformers on Steam, and I would argue it's the best DKC-like. Wholeheartedly recommended.
Great game! It's mainly inspired by the Donkey Kong Country games, with a bit of Rayman Origins/Legends involved and a touch of Flappy Bird in one level . The main feature of Kaze is the masks, which are similar to the animal buddies of the Country games. I personally love 3 of the 4 masks, with the exception of the dragon mask which functions like the minecart levels of DKC, which I didn't adore either. So it's clearly a matter of personal taste, the dragon mask levels are still well designed.
Overall it's a really fun platformer that you can nearly 100% in a little over 6 hours (I got everything but the complete speedrunning achievements and the complete no hit achievement). I wholeheartedly recommend!
