Good adventure game, but on the easier side. I only had to look up how to open Santa's safe in chapter 3. The game has an in-game hint system by talking to your companion toy bear, but I haven't used it so don't know how helpful it actually is.
The game has full voice acting, but the main character's voice is on the grating side of thing and can annoy after a while. Other characters are a lot better voiced.
A great game that combines charming visuals, engaging puzzles, and a festive storyline perfect for the holiday season. With its magical atmosphere and lovable characters, it’s a delightful experience for players of all ages who want to embrace the Christmas spirit. Loved it!!!
This is one of the cutest point-and-click games, not just for the holidays, but overall. It follows somewhat of a classic point-and-click style from the art to travel and inventory combination mechanics and commentary. I'm so glad that I found this gem to play to help get in the Christmas spirit. It's quite a lengthy game split into 6 chapters that are fully voiced. Cisco with the help of his trusty teddy bear, Kosmos just might be capable of saving Santa and Christmas from Krampus. The perfect cozy game to play with some hot chocolate and sugar cookies. 7/10
There's a huge pile of great things in this game. The graphics are wonderful, animations are great, voices are clear and crisp, puzzles are fine, if a little bit on the easy side, interface is truly excellent and there are enough things to keep you hooked on playing. With the help of these things, I can give it a valid recommendation.
Then comes the time for few critics. This should be a Christmas story. While it certainly takes place in a Christmas time, and there's some decorations visible, it just doesn't give me the right vibes. First problem is that there's no snow anywhere! Few lonely flakes swinging down from the sky and landing on the plain ground isn't nearly enough. The Story line is fine for the first part, but the second one begins in some random forest with some occult / witch stuff going on that drained any last bit of Christmas feeling down the sink that there was left. And even if you manage to keep your mood in the Christmas channel after these things, the music comes and makes devastatingly sure that every last bit of Christmas mood is gone completely. There's no jingle bells, no tambourines, nothing that would set the mood right.
TL,DR: Is it a great point & click game? Yes. Is it a great Christmas story? Well... not necessarily. I loved it for the point & click part, but didn't find the theme and setting appropriate.
Sorry, but no. Long-winded and cumbersome - just ended up feeling simultaneously frustrated, impatient and bored.
The background artwork is nice. But the animations are very very simple, just looking flat and clunky. To give an air of 'animated' many scenes have NPCs or background elements just repeating some simple movement in a loop, so most NPCs look jerky and rather silly. And some scenes with very annoying flickering - like the candles in Jack Frost's house.
The story is - ehmm...well-intentioned. But - from an adult point of view - an odd mishmash of various turn-of-the-year myths taken out of context and jumbled together into a total mess. And also - even from a child's point of view - a story that argues that Christmas is only Santa Claus magic and gifts is an...odd choice. Feels stupidly shallow and Disneyesque. Sure, Christmas celebration in most countries is a mix of various Christian and pre-christian traditions, and the religious aspect may have a larger or smaller emphasis in various cultures, countries and families. But still - this felt really shallow.
Also the game is very wordy, with many and looong and slow dialogues, mostly quite boring, time-fillers or weirdly 'philosophical'. I usually really like thoughtful and un-rushed games, but this tried my patience badly.
Voicework: the narrator was pleasant, but 12-year old Cisco felt unconvincing and annoying. After a half-hour of suffering through all his 'Oh boy's and tiresome overenthusiasm, I turned the sound off for the rest of the game.
Most reviewers praise the 'old-style' PnC puzzling. I'm too much of a newbie to know how good an 'old-style' this is. But from a here-and-now point of view, I found the puzzling often needlessly convoluted with a lot of the puzzles requiring a lot of steps, repetition, clicking through same dialogues for the nth time, cumbersome collecting of odd items used in very unrealistic ways, etc. And a lot of it felt like time-fillers to stretch the playing time for the game.
Some of the puzzles have to be approached in a very specific order, or else things that are supposed to work, won't. (Like the Maze Plane in the Unicorn quests in Jack Frost chapter). And the final 'game' after actually trapping Krampus - a sort of paper, stone, scissors type game - is long, luck-based and random and can be extremely timeconsuming and frustrating to finally get through. As well as having to click through the same lengthy dialogue again and again and again and... I almost gave up the game at that point. Also due to the game soft-locking into an endless loop in the game (without allowing Cisco to choose anything and just rolling into repeat after repeat). The autosave-file saved this soft-lock, so I had to restart the game from an earlier manual save instead. Very annoying!! And a very strange choice to put in such a looong 'random puzzle' like this right at the end of the game.
Autosave worked fine otherwise. And there is also manual save with multiple save slots, which worked fine (thankfully).
Worked fairly smooth on my basic gear and mouse, some lag at cutscenes but no biggie.
I see that most reviews are positive and praise this as family-friendly and Christmassy and kind and a fun old-style puzzler.
So I feel a little bit bad to leave a negative review. But I got it based on being just that - a kind, warm-hearted Christmas-themed puzzle adventure. And I didn't enjoy it AT ALL.
So felt that a dissenting voice, and laying out why I didn't enjoy it - may perhaps be useful for potential new players. YMMV.
Fun game, semi-complex puzzles, long gameplay- awesome!
Excellent indeed.
Long story, many locations, pretty good puzzles and elegant clues (with a couple of fortunately short exceptions that need brute force, unless you come from the designer's village - no 2 places share the same Christmas traditions - and you can decipher their doodles.)
Great presentation, fully and well voiced (even the child does a decent job by being only slightly grating,) with superb background art.
And a 10/10-rated Pn'C interface to boot, with every feature you need, fully mouse-controlled, no redundant clicks.
Its subject, its vibe and its protagonist make the game exceptionally 'family-friendly,' as parents say when they are too envious to let their kids play alone and insist on joining in.
Was really surprised that this game was so enjoyable, for being so reasonably priced. I did get stuck a few times but was able to find some subtle hints without reading outright spoilers. I kind of hate blatant spoliers.
I still haven't finished. I bought it and held onto it until Christmas week thinking it would be a fast play through. Should have started two weeks before because I'm still chugging along. LOL I like that the game is playable with a mouse. Reminds me of the classic point and click games I started out with playing years ago. And I think the artwork is fantastic for such a reasonably priced game. A lot of thought went into this game.
Looking forward to finishing so I can see the ending.
This is a lovely and sweet Christmas point and click adventure game! Perfect for the holidays or any time you are in need of a little holiday spirit. The artwork and voice acting were very well done. The story was funny and heart warming without being too much. The puzzles were nice. The inventory and ‘what to do to move on’ type were logical and made sense but some times could be challenging. The actual puzzles ranged from easy to medium challenge for me, which is nice for a holiday type adventure.
There is an autosave, but saving manually is the way to go to keep your progress. Plenty of save slots. I didn’t have any technical issues, the game ran perfectly throughout. My play time was 14 hours.
This game is well worth the price for game quality and length. I heartily recommend this game to point and click adventure fans. It was a pleasure to play.
True to reviews I read, this was an amazing game, full of originality but harking back to the good old days when point and click games were my starting point with online games. Colourful and imaginative with just the right amount of challenge in its mini games to make you think. To be fair, I had to check out a walk through a couple of times but this didn't distract from the fun! Excellent value for money, total game play for me was around 9 hours. Don't be put off by the Christmas theme, played in September/August it was just as amusing. Highly recommended!
Extra happy and festive game with lots to explore, do, and undo! Only negative feedback some glitches I encountered (the dial in Santa's office and, at the very end, the clickable minerals in goat Evil's hallway) plus the monotonous "music". Overall a great game, happy that I spot it and, yes, I encourage to play it. Can't wait for a second part, adventure of Cisco! Yeahhh
This is a well-thought out and delightful adventure. They've patched a bit, but with that aside, it's still very enjoyable and a delight to play. It has lots of achievements (there are 2 I still don't have after 2 plays, which is unusual for me, and there are superfluous collectibles (which is a personal dislike of mine), but the story line is well written, the characters are realistic and many of them adorable. There are lots of laughs, (decoy Santas, slow-witted elves), lots of traipsing through woods and castles, and loads of ingredients and items to make. I think it's highly imaginative and I voted for and hope it wins the AGGIE because it's the best thing I've played in a long while (even if I haven't found those 2 achievements yet!) It could probably do with a bit less dialog, but again, that's me. If you're an adventure fan, give it a go - it's worth the time.
This is a great game. If the folks at Daedalic made a Christmas game, this is what you'd get
NOTE: this a long adventure, not something that can be quickly finished in an hour or three on Christmas eve. So plan accordingly if wanting to enjoy it around Christmas time
this is a lovely classic P&C adventure game, which hit all the right notes for me as a fan of the genre. graphics, music, sound effects, story, humor, puzzles, everything is top notch. voicing is missing but it wasn't a big deal for me. as a fast reader i tend to skip dialogs before they are voiced to the end anyway. one thing i have missed though, is the lack of running and instant transferring from screen to screen. as much as the visuals were a treat to watch while cisco was strolling from place to place, if implemented, it could have saved some decent amount of time. i have encountered no bugs in the latest 1.06 version. after having fully enjoyed "not another weekened" and now this, i'm looking forward to the next game from dionous.
A very nice Christmas themed story that ticks all the check-boxes of a great adventure game. Like the ones we used to grow with and squeeze our brains for hours.
I liked the art and design, as well as the background music.
I would really like a future release with Voice-Overs.
I totally recommend to get it now and go save Christmas!
As an “old school” vintage adventure gamer, I often struggle to take to newer adventure titles that attempt to emulate the classic style; furthermore, I'm generally not much of a fan of anything too Christmassy (yeah, I know!). And when, when I stumbled over the demo for this game I oddly found myself really liking it, and soon enough had purchased the full version.
A really nice game, which succeeds mostly by not simply trying to clone the old LucasArts (and similar) formula. You play as young boy Cisco, who must save Christmas after Santa is imprisoned by old enemy Krampmus; Cisco works well as a protagonist as the designers thankfully resisted temptation to make him either a stereotypical nerdy genius, or a young brat with “attitude”. Young Cisco is shown to be quite clever, but not in an exaggerated way; instead he is just a good lad trying to do the right thing, and it is this charming innocence that serves the game so well. Cisco's teddy bear also becomes inhabited by 'The Spirit of Christmas', which is a nice touch; this bear (Kosmos) seems intended to mostly serve to give hints, but in actuality he doesn't really do too much of that throughout the adventure other than of the basic “try everything” variety. Even so, it's a nice addition to the overall game.
This is a really enjoyable adventure game, using the Christmas theme well without being overly saccharine. It is mostly of the typical “collect and use” items formula, and seasoned adventure gamers (of which I consider myself one) should find some enjoyable puzzles to tackle without being over taxed. However there are a few individual puzzles thrown in here-and-there which I did find a bit more tricky and slowed up my progress a bit; Actually they're probably not all that hard but could have used a bit more of a hint of how to tackle them in the dialogue (and which is surely where Kosmos should have been utilised more). A couple of such puzzles, such as opening a coded safe, and one involving smoke signals (which gave me a real “d'oh!” moment when I realised the solution), I did eventually give in and look for some mild hints online, but the rest of the game I made my own way through without hints.
There are six chapters in total, each mostly in a different setting for each one but with a few previous locations occasionally being revisited. I enjoyed all of these, only the second chapter (set at a wizard festival) feeling slightly less Christmassy and mildly more like filler, but I still had fun with it. Beyond the first chapter, set in Cisco's house on Christmas Eve, I enjoyed the Chapter 3 the most, involving a quaint Christmas town of two halves – Santa's half cheery, Krampmus's half suitably rundown and glum. Some of the chapters are longer than others – the final one being (predictably) short, but the length of this (reasonably long) adventure is easily good value for it's price. The adventure is of the gentle humour variety, and is a very family friendly play. There were one or two minor inclusions that I did wonder if served as nods towards more mature jokes, but if so they were so very mild that there's nothing to worry about if playing the game with children.
Occasionally I found I encountered pixel-hunting which slowed me down (such as some logs on Chapter 1 which I previosly hadn't even realised were there), until I realised that pressing space-bar helpfully highlights all available interactive points on-screen. The “traditional 2D graphics” are decent, with changing from room to room bmostly being seamless, and some nice in-game music.
Although (I think) every item you will collect has a use, there are many things scattered around the screens of each chapter that feel like either red herrings, or possibly from puzzles that never made it into the final game. Either way I found this fine, as too many modern adventures try to “hold the players hand” of what to do throughout, so having some ultimately 'useless' things experiment with adds to the level of deduction needed to proceed through the game.
It's odd that the game was released just a couple of days before Christmas; if released slightly earlier the challenge to “save Christmas” before 25th December would have had more incentive, but regardless, this overall is an extremely enjoyable tale, which really won me over. In fact, the only particularly weak thing I can think about it, is the title itself, which doesn't really sell the game that well, but don't let that put you off – if you enjoy tradtional-style adventure games and fancy something a little Christmassy, give this one a go.
Lovely family game really liked the chrismas fee,l great music great graphics and gave you a smile.
Very cute graphics. Brings a child-like, happy, Christmas feeling.
It's fine. There's a few bugs that are pretty much on dice rolls but it's mostly animation stuff (well in my experience).
Best gameplay of any Christmas special I've played but I'd give the story a D. Well okay maybe a C.
Imagine an animated Christmas special that you can interact with! Features a compelling story with lots of quirky characters, imaginative locations, and fun puzzles. Best part is that it lasts a whole lot longer than 30 minutes!
This is the best christmas game I´ve ever played! A very cute Adventure with 6 different chapters. I enjoyed all of it and the support of the Devs was amazing, due to me having an Issue with something not opening ;) Over all i really liked the game and am willing to replay it to get 100% of the Achievements!
Edit: Even better now that the game was finally synchronized!
I haven't finished the game yet, but i already can tell i really like it. I grew up with a lot of classic point & click adventures and this game tickles that exact nerve.
The graphics are beautiful, music is nice, puzzles aren't easy, but never frustrating or illogical so far. And the story should be great for the whole family.
Perfect game for a few christmas themed gaming evenings, maybe with the whole family.
Only small compaint: There is no voice acting, so prepare to read. But since this game doesn't have walls of text it's not so bad. I grew up with a lot of non voice acting point & click adventures, so it doesn't bother me personally at all.
This is a cute, cozy point and click game, perfect for invoking a Christmas Eve feeling of magic.
