Metal Wolf Chaos was originally made to increase Xbox sales in Japan back in 2004, as PlayStation and Nintendo had an iron grip on the region. Not even Halo could make a dent. Microsoft collaborated with FromSoftware to make this game.
It was meant to be rival to Metal Gear Solid, hence the name Metal Wolf Chaos, and how Metal Wolf looks awfully similar to Metal Gear RAY, but it sold poorly and ended up being forgotten.
But now it’s back and remastered! Sort of- It still has the original voice acting but visuals have been upgraded… slightly.
It's a very short, cheesy, B movie-like game, with loads of weapons, destructible environments. The plot is simple, the one liners are quotable and the soundtrack is amazing. The controls are simple but clunky. There's a couple bugs, glitches, even with the remastered version. The combo system sometimes won't work. Some hits don’t register, sometimes cutscenes will take you out of the action. The game also crashes from time to time.
It’s still a FromSoftware game, you can stun enemies, weapons are imbalanced, bosses have ridiculous attacks, there's a poison section, the camera can be annoying, even the moonlight sword is here.
Is it worth it's price? Not really. It wasn't worth it back in 2004 and isn't worth it in 2025. It's one of those, "it's so bad, it's good" games that you would find in the bargain bin.

MWC is simultaneously a contender for "worst game you'll ever play" and "most fun game you'll ever play". It has the craziest premise, the best weapons, a great soundtrack, and refuses to take itself seriously. It's awesome, high octane, and the b-movie japanese-to-english script will leave you with eternal earworms (RICHAAAARRRDD). The gameplay starts slumping the deeper you get into the game, however, to an annoying degree. It's hard to give MWC a negative review but overall the game is a textbook example of bad gameplay elements from the early 2000s
- inconsistent damage when hitting targets & weak spots
- unexplained mechanics
- imprecise controls ("clunkiness") and lack of speed
- in-game explanation cutscenes that yank you out of the action
[*] multiple timed missions that detract from the collection mechanics
There's a lot of awesome rule of cool stuff in MWC and I think it's worth playing if you're genuinely curious, but the feelings of "yo this is sick" will start to become feelings of "yo this sucks" pretty fast. Based on the achievement completion percentages, most people end up hitting that point early. Or maybe you're a real enough gamer like me and ready to join the elite percentage of gamers who actually made it through the insanely annoying last boss.
Got through the first cut scene and crashed my computer.
Played through the white house mission, and crashed it again.
Played into the second mission in San Francisco and BOOM - BSoD.
Refund requested. If you have Windows 11 and awesome hardware to run high-powered games, don't even try this one.
Never saying any other is the best game ever anymore, others might be good, but none can compare to this!
Aborted after 13 mins. This is what happened:
Reached cutscene after tutorial, screen suddenly switched to desktop, audio went on but no game logo in taskbar, had to turn it off in task manager, restart game, loaded save file and boom~blue screen!!!

What a shame... what a shame...
This was a very fun and charming game.. at first at least .. Reminded me a bit of FUTURE COP LAPD.
However, this game's age shows real quick and it goes hardcore pretty fast and in the worst way possible.
Cons
-Starting weapons are super weak
-Structures and vehicles are very spongy in the beginning, it takes a lot of explosive damage to destroy them. This gets turned upside down with endgame weapons.
-It takes a lot of grinding to get the good weapons, because you have to first "invest into the weapon category research" and then "manufacture" the researched weapon
-Movement isn't very responsive with a controller, turning the mech takes forever and aiming is ass. Boosting is too slow and hard to use effectively, outside of getting somewhere fast.
-Control scheme is rather weird and not explained completely either. It took me a while to figure out the "ultra move" and I didn't even know there was a stomp attack, until I was about to finish or drop the game.
-The game's tutorial doesn't go over all the controls.
-THERE IS NO IN MISSION SAVING! AUTO, CHECKPOINTS NOR MANUAL! IN A GAME WHERE SOME MISSIONS CAN TAKE 30 MINUTES OR LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND YOU CAN DIE BY FALLING INTO WATER AT THE END OF A MISSION!!!!!!
-One annoying boss is faster than the president's mech and tends to camp out in a mission critical facility, that you are tasked to destroy, before you can destroy the boss.. which may be okay, IF THE BOSS WASN'T FASTER THAN THE PRESIDENT'S MECH AND WOULDN'T HAVE AN INSTANT KILL ATTACK BEFORE YOU DESTROY THE FACILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Funnily enough, with the final railgun upgrade you can grind money with that boss.
-The pre-final boss is total ass and cheats, by not being limited by the barely responsive control scheme. Aka can turn fast, boost and aim well at the same time and can instantly lock on with a sniper rifle, whose controls for the player are.... barely usable in combat. However, endgame weapons work well against him. For which you have to grind to get them... No wonder only 15% of players, at the time of writing this, finished the game...
-Special endgame post investment progression weapons and mech skins can only be unlocked, through replaying missions on harder difficulties and getting S rank in various performance categories..
-Some jokes are too cheesy, or even cringe
-20€ for a soundtrack? Really?
-Speaking of which, music is kinda meh
Pros
-The charm and soul oozing out of the game
-Endgame power fantasy gameplay with endgame weapons is fun
-You get to fight the American military, barely any games have American's as enemies.
-Fun endgame, post endgame weapon grind...
-Fun secrets
In Conclusion
In the end, this is an old game and it shows. If you are into that, then this game is definitely for you.
However, Soulsborne, Sekiro, Elden RIng and Nioh are all better difficult games, with variable difficulties and much better save systems, as well as better responsive controls, alongside other things.

If you really want to play the game, in spite of the flaws I have mentioned above, then below is the control scheme, that is never fully explained in the game. Taken from gamefaqs website.
A: Jump.
B: Open/Close Backpack.
X: Boost. Can boost while in mid-air.
Y: Nothing. If in air, slam down for a stomp attack.
Black: Zoom map.
R-trigger: Fire right weapon. If backpack is open, cycle right weapon.
L-Trigger: Fire left weapon. If backpack is open, cycle left weapon.
L-Thumb: Boost (same as X)
D-Pad: Random taunts. (it took me way to long to learn this was a thing, now I'm addicted to the terrible one liners. Send help!)
Absolute FROMSOFWARE Masterpiece, I would like to thank the journalist of multiplayer.it and twitcher Pregianza for making me discover this game, i hope i a sequel one day. The game is very funny, The only flows are absence of checkpoint (in some part is frustrating) and the 30 fps lock, the rest for a 2004 game is perfect.
Took me an hour of dying to random damage and instakill water to beat Houston, only for the game to freeze after the ending cutscene and not save my data.
This is not the first time the game randomly froze for no reason. This bug will never be fixed either because the game’s been abandoned with no updates or fixes for 5 years.
Just watch a let’s play and save yourself $25.

Hands down one of the most hilarious games i've ever seen, the were many times were everyone in the voice call was gasping for air when watching cutscenes. Highly recommended if you want a great comedy.

This game is not bad, only problem is that it always crash when i do second mission. I read comment's where people have the same issue due to AMD graphics. I'm among them. I'm waiting to fixing the issue

That's both good and bad.
It's a little dated mainly the voice acting is extremely robotic
The From Software quality is still there it controls feel good.
If you are used to playing Elden Ring or Darksouls. the equipment change and dodge/boost buttons are reversed. So I would recommend adjusting the settings.
Don't expect the same vertical movement as Armored Core because you have a set jump height.
The game play loop is slower that other From titles.
I like the inventory system and how they handled weapons.
Expecting to be able to upgrade the suit in a menu with money isn't a thing. you have to collect Energy containers that upgrade the Mech automatically.
The Mech doesn't control great in the air. which is bad because a couple levels require some precise platforming.
