Performance Tips for Older Systems
Since it's an older game, you might encounter issues—consider buying it on sale. Here are two fixes that worked for me:

Fix Method 1:

In the white launcher window, check Vsync.
Go to Advanced, set max FPS to 40, and check Sync GPU.
This fixes camera and sensitivity issues, making the game run perfectly.

Fix Method 2:

Right-click the launcher → Properties → Compatibility.
At the bottom, go to Change high DPI settings.
Check Override high DPI scaling behavior and set it to Application.
I used both fixes, and the game runs perfectly—even with Reshade enabled.

Well, besides the fact that the achievements are semi-broken on this game, I will say that overall it was a pretty fun experience
Other than the last mission, but I won't spoil anything.

Oddworld is a rather interesting universe and for those of us who don't like platformers, you might be a bit confused about the certain characters, but overall it is a self contained story that is not bad; maybe a tiny bit corny if anything else - but hey, that is the Oddworld residents dialogue for ya'.

I recommend the game, despite the rougher edges around it.

Its a great throwback and runs extremly well. Texture update made this game look amazing. Worth the investment easy 20-40 hours of story time

Was fun at the start, but now I have a black screen bug whenever I actually get into the game.

There is a 'fix' that has me set the FPS to 40 in advanced settings in the white pre-launch menu, that lets me actually see, but it makes my gun invisible for some reason.

Really frustrating, and if I cannot fix it I am going to try to get a refund.

I played about 6 hours, and was enjoying it but got burnt out and took an extended break. In returning to the game, I struggled to get it to run and tried all the old fixes in a few discussions but nothing worked. So how do I have 12 hours of playtime? I fixed it by turning off Steam overlay and background recording. Then was able to run the game with it's sleek HD graphics.

After brushing the metaphorical mental cobwebs to remember how to play it, I was having an absolute blast and managed to finally finish an Oddworld game for the first time. Definitely the most accessible of the games in the series because it's not brutally difficult. The Oddworld charm and incredible character designs, and tone/themes of the games remains, and that's vital for an Oddworld experience. If you've never played an Oddworld game before, then make this your first. It's fantastic.

Like a lot of people said: the game is fun but the port is messy. There's some forum diving you need to do to understand and fix other bugs and there's some manual button mapping if you plan to use a controller.

controls not optimized for steamdeck out of the box, but pulling up an old controller layout gets the job done.

what a unique fps/third person game. really shows the creativity and love the old devs had for gamers. the desire to give us something new to play with. a real joy to play today and a high recommendation for someone looking for a flavor they might not have found otherwise. now if ya'd... kindly excuse me... i gotta find me some more.. bolomites.

To fix resolution go into local files for the game, select the bin folder, then right click "stranger.exe". Click on properties, then compatibility and select "override high DPI scaling behaviour" then when booting up the game set it to 1600x900.

For controller support, disable steam input.

With that out of the way enjoy an underrated blast from the past!

An Oddworld for Oddpeeps...

The game is awesome. Or rather, it was back in the day when I played it. Sadly I can't seem to get this version to work. I've tried changing resolution. I've tried all the advice with changing file names, changing options. And nothing seems to work. Too many hoops to jump through just to try and play a game.

Absolutely love this game. played it on OG xbox in HS then again when they remastered it, now a third time here. Coming from console to pc isn't hard for some games but this one is a bit hard to learn.

Such a unique, charming, and fun game. The gameplay is pretty straightforward. You are a bounty hunter and you occasionally need to help townsfolk with quests to progress the story. Seamless blending of first-person shooting, Third-person melee, platforming, and exploration. I love the setting, the characters, the humor, and the story. I loved this as a kid playing on my original Xbox and I love it now as a "grown-up."

This is a game that went under the radar even back in its day, and is still seriously not talked about enough.
The gameplay feels like what both assassins creed and dishonored feel like, and it predates them by so much. I really wish oddworld would do some more games that explore the world in different ways and eras.
Can you imagine a proper city in the setting? maybe like steampunk-type Fable 2 kind of thing, or a weird tacticsy game on abe's revolution?

An unusual, but fun game!

While the latter part changed the gameplay and certain purchased upgrades we're lost, its still enjoyable to play! The strange mechanic of harvesting "living ammo" with different effects lets you have a dozen answers for one firefight while wanting to conserve important ammo for later.

An amazing game. We need more of the old quintology games, and most of all we need Squeak's Odysee.

This game is absolutely peak, I did not expect to have this much fun & to like the story and development happening...the gameplay is solid, giving you options on how to approach every encounter, bosses to mash your brains sometimes on how to kill. From someone who doesn't usually enjoy FPS games, this one hooked me because of how different & unique it does its job. Loved how the game changed around the last act, it's quite a surprise that I enjoyed with different gameplay mechanics changing or altering...dare I say it's a masterpiece! If it wasn't for the last timed section, I would be strongly recommending it, but consider that the end can be quite brutal to achieve and might even crash your game. I recommend to set max FPS to 40 and GPU sync on the settings popup before launch. The game is not nearly as long as I played, I messed around and played it safe & stealthy most of the times but it truly has great variety for you to try and make every encounter badass.

Love this game, though it has aged a bit over the years. Story is amazing, as is the whole Oddworld universe/setting. Sad that we haven't gotten more continuation after this, I'd love to know more about the Stranger.

Great game very unique western comic styled setting in the locales of the oddworld universe. The ammo you use is a resource that is a living thing you have to catch to use.

Truly loved this game and is a great addition to the Oddworld universe. Would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the other Oddworld games and also likes first-person shooters. Only bummer is that some of the achievements are broken. You are still able to complete them with workarounds but still stinks. So achievement hunters BEWARE

Another unfortunate misfire in the Oddworld series; maybe not on the level of Munch, but nowhere near the quality of the Abe’s games either. Just like Munch went 3D because it was cool, Stranger became a first-person shooter because it was cool, even though it was a notoriously tricky and expensive genre to do right at the time.

There are some theoretically interesting, unusual mechanics here, but they don’t add up to a good gameplay. The core shooting is slow and repetitive, the environments are forgettable, and the RPG elements are too basic to add anything meaningful. The story is also a far cry from the unique dark satire of the original duology. Everything is so moody and heavy-handed here; you get hit over the head with environmentalism repeatedly, then get treated to a downer ending.

Perhaps there’s some allure to be found in the fact that these Oddworld games were so different from each other, but in this particular case I’d take iterations of one polished gameplay formula over multiple half-baked experiments any day of the week.

This game rocks! Great story and gameplay, and so many funny voice lines! Also you can make critters vomit!

This is a game I wanted to play as a kid since I saw it on X-play and Judgetment day because I loved the other games in the series. For whatever reason I didn't pick it up until the HD version. Which I'm both sad but strangely enough happy that I didn't & I'll get to that in a second


You play as a stranger who goes by...Stranger who is a bounty hunter who need to pay for his expensive surgery where you are an outlaw hunting this that and whatever for a surgery you need. How you do that by hunting people and monsters for money.

This is in itself is a fun gameplay loop. Stranger hates guns but isn't afraid to kill, so he finds live ammo to use on targets instead of a bullet. Mother nature's insects and oddities are at your disposal. You can catch anyone who tries to fight and cash them in for money and its best to catch them alive for the best payout. Not that you CAN'T catch them dead its just way less then you actually want.

You can buy several things from the store that unlock as you play the game. Stuff I wish I bought before the ACT 2 of the story happens so if you play this be sure to buy the upgrades. They're very helpful.

While the gameplay is very fun my major issue is the story and that events that unfold. ACT 2 introduces something that I was not expecting the premise given what the game was up until that point where I was just left confused why that was the choice for where the plot was going and the choices they made.

This is not negatively impact the gameplay experince. In fact despite my issues with it's story onward from ACT 2 I was having so much fun with the challenges laid before me and where it took me was great through and through.

I was going in expecting it was hunting bounties and then you needed to get bounties before other hunters do and eventually you gain the money to pay for your surgery. Maybe you steal someone else's catch if you don't get that soon enough and have a stealth section to take him and steal his catch for yourself. You do this enough and you'll get paid and have the surgery done and might fight the guy who gave you the money.

In case you thought this was your expectation going in. Don't. I feel that soured my experince with it a bit but I would still highly reccomend people beat the game once. My issues not withstanding its still a very fun hunting game.

I love this game, I just bought it on pc but I've been playing it since I was around 6-8, it's hilarious, the chickens are funny, the boss fights are amazing, I 100% recommend this game

This game is an All-Time Classic! Two Thumbs WAY UP! I would give it more Thumbs-Up if I had more Thumbs!

The First/Third Person Gameplay was so unique when it came out and is still relatively unique today.

The Dialogue is very humorous. The Environments still look pretty good and are fun to traverse.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend picking this up! If enough of us purchase it, it might encourage the IP owners to give us a "True to the Original" Sequel (and that would be amazing!!!)

I played this game as a child on an original Xbox, and i can say without a shadow of a doubt that this was one of the games that hooked me on gaming forever.
Replaying it these days still hits so close to home.
this game is a phenomenal display of character, story and a uniquely wonderful animation.

the keybinds can't be changed, and the default is unplayable. I'm pretty upset because i loved this game when it came out on xbox. Why would anyone think that releasing a game on pc, and not letting keybinds be changed, is a good idea.

maybe i'll get an update saying they added the ability to change keybinds, but i'm refunding until then.

One of the great cult classics. As a child, a friend of mine had Halo CE, at game stop I begged my mom for halo, I cried when she saw the M rating and said no, I think the game stop worker felt bad for me, he handed me a demo video for this game. I watched the demo video on a DVD player with a flip screen at least a few hundred times until my parents finally bought it for me on easter. This game is probably the most nostalgic game for me. I don't personally know a single person who has played this game and it is a very sad thing to see.

This is absolutely one of my favourite games of all time. Perfect game design, interesting story, good dialogue, unique art & characters. It even has a great message which will always need to be heart. It breaks my heart that more people don't know this game or give it the love it deserves.

100/10 PLAY THIS GAME.
