Cute, fun and short game. Don't let that fool you though because the game can be tough as nails at times. When I got to the second boss I figured I made a wrong turn because i was doing so poorly. A great Halloween time game.
2 button presses to open the map.
Frustrating little game. I had a lot more fun with the devs other title: SJ-19 Learns to Love.
It's a fair mini metroidvania. Played on normal until the 2nd to last boss then switched to easy and it was still challenging. Pick this up on a deep sale though.
I bought this game for a $1.50 on sale and honestly, I don't know if I could find a better way to spend a dollar. The game was fun, and the sweet spot between easy and frustratingly challenging.
This game was adorable and it certainly was fun. I would recommend it for it's charm and pixel art, but I would say you should know it is quite hard to beat. Even on easy I had a great deal of trouble beating the final boss. If you are willing to put in the time to figure out the boss patterns and work with somewhat slippery controls it is worth it! Have some spooky Halloween fun and don't forget to pet all the kitties! <3
Pros
~ Cute pixel art
~ Adorable cats!
~ Cute characters and writing
~ Some fun upgrades
~ Generally forgiving save points
Cons
~ Controls a little slippery
~ Quite difficult even on easy
~ Could use a few more upgrades to health or weapon
This is a fine little game. Everything works as intended, and it held my attention to the end. For a $5 game made by what I assume is one person, it's good. I can tell the developer had fun making it.
The developer has since released SJ-19 Learns To Love, which looks similar but more polished, definitely wishlisting it for when I run out of other things to play, or when it pops up on a sale.
quite the fun mini metroidvania with charming sprites. I think there's a lack of upgrades in the abilities that make this more fun than it is. Like maybe the gun should've had upgradable damage. I think if it's on sale you should definitely try if you like a challenge. The bosses are quite hard.
I played the other game by this developer, and I am leaving the same review here as I don't think they changed much between these two games other than the world..
"This is a fair Metroidvania. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table but the bosses are challenging and well designed, and the formula itself is always a good time.
It's a 2 hour game, so get it on sale."
I know I may sound like a bit of a broken record (and perhaps I am being soft of budget indie games), but this just edges its way into the positive side, and it'd get a squarely neutral vote if it was possible.
It's a very barebones Metroidvania, and while I took my time trying to explore, sometimes unsuccessfully, it can be beaten easily in under two hours. Rooms themselves feature very basic platforming with a few area specific obstacles, with only one movement upgrade in the whole game and even then it isn't used that often (hell, due to a patch which made spikes no longer instadeath -an overall good choice given the game- one of the optional pickups it guarded is now obtainable by simply tanking a hit).
Enemies have plenty of health but are generally very easy to dodge once you know what to do, so killing them (not necessary outside of bosses, but will definitely make your life easier over trying to run past/around them in plenty of rooms) always feels a bit slow. One of them is actually a bit of a puzzle to figure out how to dodge it the first time you encounter it, and sadly that's as complex as regular combat gets. Between these two aspects the core gameplay loop is not getting too worn down by damage you will likely take if you aren't being super careful between the save rooms, which are the source of healing in normal mode.
One of the game's more interesting aspects is its bosses. While I am unsure about how long they last given how much damage they deal and how static most of their patterns are (the final regular boss has two phases and the final one adds more obstacles as the fight goes on), they all have their charm in terms of how they play out. They're not perfect, but the rhythm of a good fight is rewarding in its own right.
Overall, I've played browser games with more content than this. But all in all, it has enough charm and good ideas throughout the entire playtime to be worth a buy during sales. I'm definitely curious about how SJ-19 Learns to Love fares in comparison.
It's hard to recommend Spooky Ghosts Dot Com when there are so many other better games out there. I don't want to say it's bad, but I didn't find it very enjoyable. Everything about it, level design, enemies, graphics, music, and boss fights, are just kinda mediocre. There's nothing making me want to try again after dying.
If you want a good, short Metroidvania, try Mini Ghost, Out There Somewhere, or The Alchemist's Castle. Give this one a pass.
Great pixel art and entertaining game. It's not super long, but it's a solid experience. Not as deep as Celeste, but the look is similar and fans of 2D platformers will probably find something to like. Starts out hard but, after you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. Also made with Godot, which is a pretty cool engine.
A nice little metroidvania with a cute Halloween theme and a couple cool and interesting boss fights. Controls are responsive, the only problem I could find is that I didn't like the soundtrack that much.
A short experience that is fun while it lasts.
Very enjoyable. I love Halloween. I love cats. I love Metroidvanias. So this game spoke to me on a spiritual level. It is short. I beat it and 100%ed the map in 82 minutes. I do have a couple achievements left to do though. I'd like to see more from these devs.
A fun little metroidvania that doesn't outstay its welcome. The bosses and enemies are created with a bare minimum art assets, which forced the developers to get inventive with their patterns.
Here's what you do:
This is a 2D action platformer. You play as a girl who runs a ghost exterminating website. The game starts with you answering an email which takes you to a mansion filled with ghosts and other spooky beings. You are armed with a blaster to turn ghosts into candy (or they just drop candy they were holding).
What I like:
+ Save point jack-o-lanterns restore your health bar. In normal difficulty, save points are the only place to heal. In easy, candy drops will occasionally restore health. I found the normal difficulty to be fine.
+ Variable jump height based on how long you hold the jump button.
+ Explore the mansion, defeat bosses and gain new abilities in any order (metroid-like).
+ Use collected candy to buy more power-ups at shops in the mansion.
+ Pet small cats around the mansion to please the big cats who will fast travel you to other parts of the mansion.
What I don't like:
- Has a beat the game without dying achievement.
- Game is short, but is inexpensive.
Conclusion:
The game takes less than two hours to beat and can be speedran in about 30 minutes. I had fun playing through it although it is a small game.

Spooky Ghosts dot com is a fine game for its price. It's very short. I finished the game twice in two hours to get every achievement. The levels aren't really good, but the bosses are fine. Some details are cute, making the game enjoyable.
Cute bite-sized Metroidvania that reminded me a lot of Kero Blaster as well as Ghostbusters for the Mega Drive. Controls are a tad unresponsive, but due to the limited scope of the game it never becomes too much of an obstacle.
An eminently digestible snippet of metroidvania, with cute bosses that put up just enough resistance to draw out a muffled cuss or two. Dashing is more blinky and less swooshy than I like. Needs more swoosh.
A fun seasonal platformer. How I do like the notion of those! And if it's between a bargain bin bucket of candy corn and this game . . . please, pick Spooky Ghosts Dot Com. Your pancreas will thank you.
A nice game, if a short one.
The graphics is simple but pleasant, there are several bosses, and it got a bit of nice humor touches here and there. That said, it is a very short game. Good to pass an evening, tops. Could had used more content, possibly with more upgrades for the weapon avaiable.
Personally I enjoyed it all considered.
This is one of those games that really makes me wish Steam had more than just a yes/no vote. I feel a little bad giving this a no recommendation since it's an inoffensive and at times amusing game. I just feel like people will get the wrong impression if it nothing but "eh, it's okay" yes votes.
There really just isn't much to it, and certainly nothing new. It's very short, and if you're like me most of that short time will be spent replaying bosses, with the areas themselves offering little in the way of challenge or exploration value. And the bosses feel kind of samey, with a lot of dodging stuff that's moving back and forth while jumping less regular projectiles and timing attacks. The plot is just kind of a boring placeholder. The few upgrades are lackluster and don't change the feel of the gameplay much. There isn't really much in the way of extras to find on the map - just a few health upgrades and some cats which only reward you with an achievement.
The graphics are minimalistic and low resolution but not without some charm.
One thing that did kind of stand out was the music which honestly was kind of bad. I'm a little taken back by the soundtrack actually being for sale.
Still, at the end of the day I don't regret getting it or playing it to completion. And I don't personally mind the cost but at $5 it does feel overpriced compared to other offerings in the price category - $2 seems more suitable. Maybe wait for the inevitable sale or price reduction.
So far, so good! :)
Don't mind the game being short; not everything needs to be a 40+ hr. epic..
EDIT: DEV HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL IN HELPING GET PAST THE ROUGH SPOTS. :) :) :)
