I made it through the first two levels and about halfway through the third level until I decided this wasn't the game for me. The game has a great formula and the potential to be an awesome game, it just doesn't have the feel that I was looking for.
The combat feels floaty and very easy. For example, I would stab my sword into an enemy, hold it there for about 10 seconds, then they would die. The enemy wouldn't get up, wouldn't fight back, it would just sit there and slowly bleed out. If that's your kind of thing, then more power to you, it's just not the system for me. There were some fun parts of the combat as well. As stated in other reviews, the game does not take itself seriously, and I loved the humor of the game. Decapitations and severing limbs was easy and fun, but made the game feel too easy sometimes. Of course, that could be a fault of my own for not trying out Hard mode; I was playing on normal.
Additionally, the exploration did not feel very rewarding. Levels are based on a set path with a few houses on the sides that you can visit and check out. Some have food, some have some zombies with new weapons, and others had... nothing. Just some furniture . I could understand if there were just a couple side rooms in a whole level, but between the first two levels, there were about 10, and 6 of them had just about nothing, maybe just a zombie or two. When I explore, I expect to find some sort of reward, even something small like a potion or food, not just a bunch of furniture and common weapons like candles or knives.
It's not the game for you if you are expecting realistic sword combat, but it is fun if you are looking for a casual, linear, story-oriented melee fighting game. The game has great potential, but right now, it's not in a state that's right for me. It's not a bad game at all, it just needs a little bit of work on the main gameplay loop. I would put a neutral review in if I could.
This is the first physics based combat VR game I've played, and so far it is a lot of fun. My favorite weapon is the bonebreaker. I got this game on sale. Totally worth it.
I really, REALLY enjoyed the combat in this game. Yes it is a little floaty, but it is still satisfying.
So why the thumbs down? Well - it is still pretty buggy. Objects will get stuck on other objects. I had a door to a house that I walked in (the part where he goes on about the crusades), and then the door turned black and I couldn't get out.
But the REAL reason for the thumbs down is that there was this puzzle involving a lot of backtracking and archery. It is both kind of brilliant and annoying at the same time. Only problem is that there is a door you have to go back through - but now - for whatever reason - the door can't be interacted with at all - even though you went through it 5 minutes ago. I looked at some walkthroughs, and yeah - you are supposed to be able to go through the door - and that is the only way to continue the game. Infuriating! Maybe I will re-evaluate if they ever fix this, but I am not going to roll the dice and start all over again hoping that the bug is gone.
Thumbs down! Shame ...
Some bad points and visuals a bit meh. GRIMLORD and BEHEMOTH are same but better. This is still worth playing on a good sale.
Strange thing to say, I didn’t like this game when I tried the demo first. Awkward physics and silent enemies which tend to attack from behind that’s all I remembered. "Nothing special", I thought and forgot about the game until I noticed 1.2 update. Gosh it was a real big!
Now “Undead Citadel” is one of my favorites. It seems like “Hellsplit Arena” commit branch. Or “Hellsplit Arena” is a branch of this masterpiece, who knows. Both games have many recognizable similarities in the game physics and enemies’ behavior. However, “Undead Citadel” provides a story mode, which “Hellsplit Arena” lacks. More than that, the “Armory” duel mode is a genial finding which “Hellsplit Arena” doesn’t have.
There are so many details in the enemy bodies! They even have facial expressions. Flies around dead bodies is a brilliant idea! I also like the way how the undead appear on the battlefield. It is very natural to crawl from under the ground. I enjoy the aggressive way they fight. You know, in “Hellsplit Arena” they fall from a slightest push and lay down so long that you can kick them to death. Not in “Undead Citadel”! Here they fight like mad dogs and rise very fast.
More than that, I enjoy funny comments of Sir Enville. When I'd shoot at a zombie’s arse and the voice of the main hero exclaimed “bullseye!” I was about to die of laughter. “Ho-ho-ho, di-capital!”, “What’s your problem, bag of bones?!”, “I’d add some meat on these bones!” and many-many others. Yes, it’s a very cool and funny game.
However, I'll never reach the final level. Because I hate stupid riddles like "put a barrel on the specific spot three times" or "return to the beginning and shoot a fire arrow hell knows how many times". Maybe this repeated insanity is the worst thing in the game. I want to shoot the undead, not the furniture!
Also, the weapon holster is quite disappointing. When I just raise a weapon to hit an enemy a sign pops up: “You can’t store this weapon here”. What the...? The belt-holder is also very clumsy and looks ugly. If I were the developer of this game, I’d overhaul its mechanics completely. “Hellsplit Arena" is an ideal in this matter. Additionally, I don't understand why crawling zombies without arms and legs cause damage when you step on them. This issue resembles the crazy knight from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" but not that fun.
Of course, multiplayer would also be very appreciated!
I may not have a lot of time in this game but so far it has been really fun. The graphics could definitely be better but its fine the physics are pretty good the stabbing is kinda bad but the slicing feels pretty good bows are kinda weird to me mostly because I don't use them a lot at all
4/5 the game is fun to play the graphics are decent and the physics are pretty good great if you want to feel like a badass
I think the review of feeling like Uhtred hit the nail on the head. Great game, but made it even better, I had a small issue with the game, reached out to Dark Curry, and they have been nothing but helpful in fixing the problem. So not only a fun and awesome game, but awesome developer too.
After two and a half hours, I can recommend this game. Great main character with well-taught jokes, a world and atmosphere worked out to the smallest detail, one of the best movements I've ever seen (for now) and every item you can use has its own weight. If you love the plague Middle Ages or love swinging a sword - highly recommend it. (My VR system is Quest 3s). P.S. Be careful with the objects around your room; they will damage you))
This is a pos game even on sale stay away plays like shit.
I would generally recommend this game.
The voice acting is amazing, Capheus really delivers the brutish knight well. The gameplay is responsive and effective. Limbs are cut when I expect them to be cut and they are not when it is reasonable. Each weapon is effective and responsive.
Fair warning to anyone playing this game, it does have subtle horror elements- dreary environment, dark rooms, scary background stings.
I do have a few critiques and bugs with this game though.
Often weapons get stuck in objects for a second, this can cause ridiculous ragdolls on enemies, their bodies stretching like rubber.
It would also be nice if the game added a secret counter after you complete each level since there are secret weapons hidden around.
You can't have more than two weapons sheathed at a time, this includes shields, daggers, sword, axes. I feel it would be appropriate to at least allow a dagger on the grenade and key slots, speaking of which. There is nothing that indicates those besides the little hooks on your belt- This could probably be fixed by adding a sheath here message when you get the key in the first level.
The game has a couple bugs. Not big ones but I digress.
Sometimes doors have a glitchy texture when inside buildings.
Hands do not rotate after changing the graphics, requiring a restart.
I suffered a freeze in the final level requiring me to reboot my whole computer.
Easy 8/10 game though
All of the environments and enemies were very repetitious. The controls are very bizarre on Index. By default you drop your stuff if you don't actively grip them. Disabling this makes combat worse, especially using a bow, which is already a chore. The biggest problem with the game is that the trigger button moves the weapon in your hand. It feels totally unnatural. Instinctively you are going to grip the trigger for stability when striking an enemy but on this it makes the weapon slide around in your hand like jelly. So you end up going to land the finishing blow and your sword just flaps lifelessly on their head. I imagine the game gets better but it doesn't make a strong impression. The only good thing I would say about this game is the protagonist reminds me of the guy from the game Blood.
I am so tired of these VR zombie games. Totally uninspired, tired and low concept. From everything I have seen in gameplay footage and from playing the game for a short period, what you see on the tin is what you get. Repetitive little arenas with tiny walkways and useless little houses with crappy loot. You could do all of this in Skyrim VR or Blade and Sorcery. Does nothing unique and is painful to navigate.
I'll say right now that I felt kind of bad refunding this game. I can tell there's some love put in here and they genuinely tried to make something great. Aside from a lot of the jank and weird physics I encountered. Especially with not really being able to throw stuff, and like in the trailer where he flips the axe that does not work the axe just flies up straight into the air doesn't flip. Also I think the voice acting in the story mode is kind of fire whoever did it did a pretty good job.
Anyways, the reason I'm refunding this game personally is I found that VR games that require you to move around with the control stick and actually move your character unlike a game like Beat Saber where you're stationary make me sick, and I would probably never play this game more than an hour.
But I will say, if you're ok with a little jank and games like this don't make you sick then I'll still give this a positive review. It's pretty neat.
It doesnt feel very polished, its very buggy, and confusing, i spent 45 minutes of my gameplay trying to figure out what to do only to figure out they were supposed to break out of a wall... i dont recommend
One of the best fun I've had in VR. Great physics, awesome slicing of undead bodies, game is long enough to have enough fun, but even after the story ended I will keep replaying it in arenas. For sure recommended for all swordfighters out there
I can't even really explain a whole lot about Undead Citadel.
It's fun, a lot of fun. The character you play as has personality and the voice actor for them nailed their delivery.
The combat is a solid melee and bow experience, and the mixture of puzzle, to item finding, has me just exploring buildings naturally.
This is a game to at least test out and see for yourself; in under two hours I've gotten quite a bit done with the story. I recommend this game considering the amount I've played and enjoyed so far.
Each map section has a puzzle and enemies to fight through - some even have 'mini boss fight' area's to deal with. This makes the combat rather focused on Melee, specifically sword and board, tactics to be a lot of fun.
I don't want to say or spoil too much, since the story and atmosphere tells you more as you play the game.
For a new player to VR this was/is so much fun. When you start getting proficient with this game it feels really good. I only just figured out today how to consistently pick things up from distance (use palm) and that the optimal way to aim the bow is to hold it horizontal and draw to your chest. Trying to sight down the bow is a bad time with the headset getting in the way. Maybe that's common vr knowledge, I dunno.
The story mode is cool, although the sections between the fighting can feel a mite tedious sometimes, but it lets you scrounge around for items and healing.
Horde mode so far is endless fun which is what you get in the demo. Though in the full game you can permanently unlock weapons through story mode. I got carried away a few time and accidentally punched a few things in my living room.
Oh yeah the couple things I dislike are sometimes a checkpoint doesn't properly load after a death and I get stuck and have to restart the level. This happened on three different levels. The other thing is the crawling enemies. They have too much reach and if they just tickle your toe it damages you. It's not very convincing that they're doing anything that could cause harm.
Pros:
It's a good time, I find it less floppy than blade and sorcery, kind of similar style, but takes itself less seriously. The voice acting is fun.
Cons: The pick up and store system is way too precise, I go into a fight and suddenly realize at some point I've dropped my sword instead of storing it, or thrown my bow over my back instead of storing it. Picking up arrows drove me to madness, you have to be so precise you have to spend ages just trying to grab them. Climbing similar. Also there is no charge, launch, jump... you know, like an exciting way to attack. There's also a lot of opening and closing doors with blackscreen inbetween.
My major issue is how precise all pickup and store things are. Nobody wants to drop their bow, or their arrows, don't make the space you can pick up / store so small. I've just finished Assasins creed and it has a bow and arrow and you need to pick up arrows, it's much more forgiving. I want grab, store, get on with it. Not fiddle fiddle fiddle drop fiddle.
I cannot play the game on my quest 3 via steamvr because non of the available xr runtimes work in this configuration. I guess the problem exists since the game came out for the occulus store and quest 3 native...
just got the the game played the story for about an hour but got stuck in the bridge where you find the bow and i just gave up trying to figure it out, like no subtle hints at all? the game is decent combat is a bit janky, sometimes the enemys will go flying the only fun mode in the game is armory but it is a bit blank i wouldnt reccomend this game untill its fully optimized but if you wanna see for urself go for it
This game is great it has amazing graphics! The type of game is Action and a twist of mystery along with it I like the That the music isn't overwhelming. The enemies are not to hard or to easy to beat they are just right . I like that it has a story to go along with it. It has enough play time to keep me occupied. The weapons are great. All in all this is a great game if your on the fence about it don't be just get it you won't be disappointed.
idk if its a skill issue or not but the puzzle things and the key things were not my favorite, the enemies are kinda annoying to fight, when you knock them over they get up wayy to quick and the crawling ones are annoying to fight in my opinion
7 out of 10
I Literally felt like Uhtred of Bebbanburg while slaying the undead. I just wish there was a way to turn off the touch sensitive thumb pads near the thumb sticks. I keep turning around because i keep accidentally touching the touch pad.
