Simply 10/10. If you have doubts because of the price, listen to this review and just buy it.
Bonus: Works perfectly well on the steam deck.
Stellar. I did not expect to much going into this. "Another indie game people are playing and recommending," was the thought running through my mind UNTIL I started the game. The atmosphere that is established and the art design made me instantly want to explore more and see new areas. The Animal Well is vast with tons of puzzles around almost every corner. This is a puzzle game through and through, with a terrific post game experience also. If you're on the fence about buying it at full price, wait until a sale, either way you wont regret this buy! 9/10 needed more animals
Such a great game! Hollow Knight is harder in a different way. But this game ticks of so many boxes to make it a very enjoyable game to play. Played it on the StreamDeck, very happy with the gameplay.
Insane this game is only 33mbs, genuinely a really solid experience, pixel art is beautiful, controls are really tight, and exploring feels fantastic. If you like games such as Hollow Knight and Rain World, I cannot recommend this enough. Easily one of my favorite games I've played this year.

An excellent puzzle-platformer. The artstyle is unique, as it gives personality and atmosphere to the game. The music is good. Its difficulty feels fair and the game teaches you a bunch without saying anything. there are secrets upon secrets upon secrets! So if you LOVE hunting for them, ANIMAL WELL will definitely scratch that itch. One guy p much made this game, which is incredibly impressive as well! Bravo!
There's not much more I can say that hasn't been said before, but Animal Well is a master class in show-not-tell gameplay chock full of aha moments and more depth beyond your initial (of which there are many) credit screens than perhaps any other game. There are many stopping points at which players can choose to gracefully bow out of the game, but for those who enjoy increasingly obscure and esoteric mysteries, puzzles, and secrets Animal Well is the deepest I can recall. Some of the post-game puzzles start becoming SO mysterious you should not feel ashamed if you want to declare you've had your fill with Animal Well and move on or look up solutions on the internet, but I think that is a strength of the game and not a weakness; This well is, ironically, as deep as you want it to be. The innovative uses of the tools you find are always fun when you discover a new, unexpected use of something you've already been using for hours, and who knows what percentage of those secrets of the game have yet to be discovered.
The style, the sound design, the fact that the entire game is literally only 33MB, you can just go on and on about this game. Suffice it to say, I would recommend every single gamer, whether they are specific fans of metroidvanias or not, to at least try this game at some point. Yes, it is that good.
a beautifully crafted game ruined by its difficulty. I enjoyed the puzzles and the environments, the music established a really cool vibe, this game is a great metroidvania but HOLY FUCK this games bosses are TOUGH, while some people like to be tested and pushed to their limits, i do not. A difficulty option would have been nice, or something to ease the pain.
Animal Well invites you into a deep, labyrinthine world of exploration, where an ever-expanding toybox of tools helps you navigate its intricate secrets. There’s no combat; instead, the tools you find assist you in further exploration and help you avoid danger. While it may appear on the surface to be a simple puzzle-platformer, the deeper you delve into its mysteries, the more layers there are to uncover.
With its stunning pixel art, the game is a delight to explore. Even after completing the main story, Animal Well offers plenty to do, revealing its true depth. Its densely packed with secrets that remain consistently engaging...just when you think you’ve uncovered everything the game surprises you with yet another layer.
If you’re like me and craving a new FEZ-like experience, I highly recommend this game.
Very fun little game with cool gimmicks, the puzzles are really fun and smart and the exploration and curiosity are really rewarded. Would recommend if you like puzzle platformers and metroidvanias
Incredible game design for a metroidvania game with many creative items/ablities and interesting puzzles. Amazing atmosphere, sound design and world structure. A serious indie game of the year contender and one of the best metroidvanias I've played so far
You may think that Animal Well feels like a Metroidvania on the surface, but as you play, you will find out that it pushes the genre forward in a maniac way by using old techniques to deliver an experience that deep down is unlike anything you ever played.
One of the only games I have gathered all achievements for (save for one..) just out of spite. This game is absolutely fantastic. A genuine work of art. It will lull you to sleep and slap the **** out of you in one sitting. You have to use at least 73% of your brain power to even think you've finished it, and you haven't.
Animal well was such an experience it did take me a little while to get into it when i first sat down and played it i enjoyed it alot but then i put it down for awhile. when i picked it back up i fell absolutely in love with it. it is a stunning game in looks, sounds, and vibes. i find its world so charming and mysterious and as i completed the game and took a deep dive into its post game content (if you can even call it that) it only entranced me more. it's a game that doesn't take you by the hand and leaves everything up to you. it sorter feels like you are game testing an already finished game in the best possible way.
My advice to you: This game is very deep in its secrets most likely way more than you know or would even think. i suggest going as far as possible blind and even further than that. this will truly make the experience amazing. i do feel like i looked up some of the post game solutions too fast and i wish i had gone longer blind because i did not realize how much was rlly left. so give yourself the extra challenge and try to go a little longer before looking up solutions. Though it is totally understandable and advised to look up some solutions because this game can get pretty out there way beyond my capabilites of puzzle cracking. even so the solutions will still amaze and amuse when looked up.
Rating: 10/10
Worth it?: yes
Worth 100%?: yes
Must play?: yes
I normally do not have an issue with this, but Animal Well's visuals made me feel genuinely unwell after only 15 minutes of play. The colour palette is jarring and makes it difficult to read where platforms and terrain are. Not helped that when screen transitioning, you are moving into a very colourful screen into a pitch black room. Have requested a refund.
an unforgettable experience. words cannot do justice to the old-school feelings of awe and discovery this game imparts
This game was probably one of my favorite games this year (2024). It was one of the more original games I have played in a while with lots of hidden things to find.
Also just amazing that this game was as big as it is and is somehow only 35MB.
Big, good looking, and fun.
Surface level it's very nice... there's depth that might be too deep, but well even without that it's still great.
One of the best and most creative puzzle platformers there ever has been, and with an amazingly unique style. Can't recommend highly enough.
This was fun for awhile, but very frustrating as you explore more and more of the world to know WTF you are supposed to do next. I have a massive part of the map explored and have solved a lot of fun puzzles, but the last few hours I've just been running around places I've already explored and finding absolutely nothing new.
The game needs to have some kind of system for offering hints when a player is completely stuck. Yes I know there are full-game walkthroughs online, but it's really tedious to skim through 5 hours of video just to figure out what tiny detail you missed in a gigantic world.
Also, I found this game to be extremely hard on the eyes. The pixelation effects are just ugly, even on a Steam Deck screen. On my 24" computer monitor, it was even more revolting.
Some people will enjoy this kind of challenge, but I found it very frustrating that I can't finish the game without a lot of tedious work.
Great example of a metroidbrania (see Tunic). The game just drops you in. No information, no goals, no quests — figure everything out by yourself. Pretty short if you don't do the ARG stuff (didn't do it because it's an extremely niche thing people like for some reason). With a reasonable amount of secrets, I beat it in about 8 hours. Highly recommend it for metroidvania fans.
A rare game with smart game design. Each acquired item opens new opportunities and most important new fun interactions. Truly game by gamer for gamers
Fun, easy to get into with marvelous grafics design. But at the same time contains some very hard late game puzzels
An amazing experience from start to finish, one of the most creative metroidvanias I have ever played where not only the curiosity is expected, is rewarded. Loved every minute of it
TEN OUTTA TEN GAYME OF THE YEAR EVERY YEAR BAYBEEEEEEE
Animal Well is a masterpiece and a must play for anyone who enjoys video games. In terms of visual and audio design, the game is an absolute treat to the senses and undeniably a beautiful work of art. The game's setting and presentation are truly otherworldly and immersive in the best way possible. PEAK comfy liminality. More importantly, Animal Well absolutely shines in the gameplay department as well. I'm not a particularly huge fan of Metroidvania style games, (although I certainly don't hate the genre), but this game's puzzles and gameplay elements are fantastically innovative and I fell in love very quickly. The sense of discovery through exploration and experimentation in the game is massive and extremely satisfying. I lost track of how many "aha!" moments I had during my play sessions in which I was genuinely amazed; it's the first game to really surprise me in that manner in quite a while. Every time I got stuck in the game and would come back to it after a break, messing around and looking at things from a different perspective would enable me to figure out how to progress fairly quickly. I never felt frustratingly stuck despite my own ineptitude because Animal Well is expertly designed. The game is a perfect length for a casual playthrough and I plan on someday returning to its cozy world to go for 100% completion. I cannot overstate how much I adore Animal Well and I highly recommend that you play it. This is by far my PC game of the year. It's like Halo 2 meets Halo 3.
This game is really WELL made!
Super fun puzzles and cute atmosphere. Highly recommended.
A lovely game of exploration and curiosity, trepidation and dread, and gives you a nice pat on the head when you overcome the din and weight of not knowing what's coming next. Strangely feel-good experience packaged in what should by all rights by a bothersome one. Cozy and superb.
Animal Well is a puzzle-based metroidvania. The kind that gives you a tool box full of fun gadgets with tons of possible applications. When you use these to finally solve a difficult puzzle room, you'll feel like a genius who "broke" or outsmarted the game. When, in fact, your clever jerry-rigged method was the intended solution all along. You'll check every little corner of every little room for secrets and be rewarded for doing so almost every time. And you'll be treated to a beautiful map with tons of identity and charm as you do it.
Amazing game, the game is extremely fun to explore with really imaginative items and decent puzzles
What. A. Masterpiece.
One of the most creative games I have played. The world design in Animal Well is outstanding and encourages you to get creative yourself with the way you use your items. Man, this game is just incredibly satisfying. The eerie atmosphere and unusual but beautiful visuals fit perfectly with the constant sense of mystery, discovery, and wonder elicited by the gameplay. You just never know what awaits you in the next screen, the gameplay never gets stale, and there'll always be something tickling your brain in new and interesting ways.
I know that 24.50€ is a relatively high ask for a pixel art indie title, but Animal Well is worth it. Believe me, when I say, this well is deeper than it looks. Way, way, waaay deeper.
Animal Well is really, really, really good. It's one of those games that makes you feel really smart when you figure something new out, and I loved the whole experience. Fantastic.
Super creative and fun world. Interesting puzzles and game mechanics. Could not recommend more highly, if you enjoy phenomenal platformers!
Playing this game you can tell this game is a passion project. Games full of secrets and very unique puzzles if you observe the environments. Highly recommend going into this game blind as it really makes the experience 10x better. One of the best games this year.
真正的解密游戏就是得藏点只有开发者或是数据挖掘工才知道的谜题和秘密。
One of the most captivating games I've ever played. A spectacular game with awesome art and really cool and fun puzzles
Amazing game. Beautiful art style, surprisingly immersive atmosphere, silly creatures, interesting puzzles, and engaging platforming. its absurdly well designed, the developer clearly thought everything out carefully. My brain still cant comprehend that its under 40mb. Every time you find yourself at the end of a section, it opens back up into something completely new. it keeps getting deeper, and I'm not even near fully completing this game. it so far has one of the most unhinged (imo a positive) postgames ive ever seen, but i don't wanna spoil anything so ill shut up now.
Without a doubt my favorite single player game. It's perfect from beginning to... end...
Probably the best "metroidvania" of the decade. A game made with love, developed by a single person, who I think is completely crazy and I love that because he has developed a videogame that without thinking much about it, ends up in the collection of the best videogames I will ever play in my entire life.
PS: If there is ever something even slightly strange, yes... it is a clue to a secret.
You get to play as a sentient wallnut and explore a haunted well full of strange critters such as ghost cats and elusive bunnies, solving puzzles along the way in a wonderful world that's probably the purgatory version of doggy heaven.
Fortunately you're incredibly resourceful and fireworks tend to be enough to scare away these maladaptive phantoms. My headcanon is you climbed down out of thirst only to end up in a purple haze due to carbon dioxide poisoning.
I'm not that deep into it yet but apparently some of the puzzles really spaghettify your head and there's a whole ARG vibe going on with the community, so it promises to outlast our current reality.
Lots of exploration, lots of puzzles. Good for people who stubbornly enjoy that dopamine hit you get after solving a tricky puzzle after a lot of head-scratching and searching every corner. If that's not you, perhaps it's not your cup of tea, and nothing wrong with that!
Don't expect much in the way of hints or directions when you get stuck. I've had to look for help online a few times to progress on several puzzles after becoming very lost how to progress, but then those other times I figured something tricky out on my own felt amazing and more than made up for it.
This game has a ton more depth than I expected. I haven't finished it yet and, frankly, still have no idea how close I am to doing so.
A metroidvania with a very unique identity that provides 6-8 hours of main story and 20+ hours of secrets and discovery through clever puzzles. Skip the trailer and buy it - if you aren't sold within 2-hours then you can refund it.
This may be the most impressive game I've played. How the developer (yes single developer) managed to fit so much unbelievable detail and clever, out of the box puzzles into such a small file-size is frankly amazing.
Not to mention that aesthetically this game is absolutely gorgeous and has MULTIPLE LAYERS OF ENDINGS (if this is your first time learning this, please go back and see how deep this well truly goes).
A gorgeous game with charming graphics and stunning sights despite easily running on pretty much any windows pc.
The game has a surprising amount of depth too it too! I thought I had completed the game but it just keeps going. As a cherry on top, the leds on my controller change color depending on my selected item, thats how you know this game was made with love
10/10 this is the video game equivalent of grandma's homemade desserts
thinking about this game gives me a sentimental yearning for the happiness i experienced when playing this game, almost like nostalgia, despite only having played it like 6 months ago. the sound and graphic designs is just so ingeniously crafted to establish a calming and ascetically pleasing atmosphere and general mood. the best word to describe this game would be beautiful.
fun puzzle game, I had a good time getting to the end. Though it's a bit too cryptic and if I wanted to 100% it I should have been taking notes on everything from the start. I didn't and also I have other games I want to play so I'll just leave it here having found over half of the collectibles and at least officially finished the game.
One of the best things I've ever played. Animal well is a really well designed puzzle platformer/metroidvania that goes very deep into the puzzle part. I think it would be a good game if you just want to get through the normal sequence of events, but sticking it out (and going crazy trying to convince myself I like doing hard things) is well worth the effort.
The hype is warranted. It's seriously very very good. If you like secrets and puzzles and very awesome art and music; retro gaming that does ALOT with a little, then you'll have a blast. 100% is not super hard, though you may need a guide. I'm using guides to find the bunnies, post completion.
You will get your money's worth, trust me. Just buy it and try it. I wish I could play it for the first time again.
Great little metroidvania game with a lot of charms. Kudos to the single developer that did all this, quiet an achievement really. I liked it so much I would have loved it to be a wee bit longer.
Lots of layers to this game. At 10 hours or so I thought I was almost done, but did not realize at the time that I had only just gotten started.
i typically dont play metroidvanias due to their intricate nature and the constant backtracking playstyle, but this game drew me in by its unique visual style and gameplay. the fact that you do not attack or fight any enemies, but rather outsmart them, really brings a refreshing taste to the genre
