guys you're not gonna believe this but i actually saw a carrot in this game (rare)
Ninjin: Clash of Carrots is definitely one of the best indie games ever made. it’s one of these hidden gems that you found on a sale and unexpectedly it becomes one of the best games you ever played, but that doesn’t mean that the game has no flaws.
The good things
- first and most importantly in this type of games is the gameplay. the gameplay in this game looks simple but it’s quite solid. You can only attack, throw projectile, dash and attack while dashing, but the gameplay encourage you be better at attacking in the perfect time, choosing your weapons and managing your stamina. the more you understand the gameplay, the more enjoyable the game will be. 17 hours of playing and the game didn’t get boring at all
- the story doesn’t take itself seriously at all and is full of jokes, which are really good and funny. the dialogues and its jokes were so funny and make you wait for any cutscene to just hear what the characters have to say.
- the soundtracks in this game are also good and fit the atmosphere of the game
- the content of the game is more than enough for a 10$ game like this ( i bought it for 1$ on a sale ). you have two playable characters, 5 worlds, tons and tons of weapons, a lot of different enemies and good endless mode
- the design of the waves in the game is the best thing in the whole game. the dev thought very deeply about the number, placement and usage of any enemy in every wave. the game also does a fantastic job on making every level different, especially at the end. every time you think the game doesn’t have anything new, it hits you with new ideas.
- the style of the graphic is beautiful and i loved the pixel graphic here
The bad things
- there was a very high spike in difficulty in level 5-2. this games contradict with everything the game introduced. the main idea of the game is to have fun and you can make it challenging for yourself if you tried to get the S rank. all this in short levels from 3 to 6 minutes. but level 5-2 is quite the opposite. the level is so long (11 minutes) and so hard, especially if you are just playing causally. this comes from someone who got the S rank in all levels except this one. i understand the dev wanted to make this level the final challenge for everything you saw in the game, but i think i would have been better if it was a side level
- the endless mode while enjoyable has some major flaws. why is everything so random. the game was good because everything was deeply thought of, but when the game is random it becomes so bad and unfair, especially if you want to reach wave 500. and why isn’t there any description of the items you get between the waves. i certainly can’t remember the power and effects of every weapon and sometimes i take something as a projectile, but it turn out to be a sword. i think if the dev fixed this the endless mode will be way better
- while the dialogue is good, but the cutscenes are few. i wanted to see the characters interact with one another, but it’s not a big problem
- the achievements don’t work in 2.0 version, but you can fix it if you played it with the 1.4 version
in conclusion, Ninjin: Clash of Carrots is a fantastic game and i hope to see another project from this dev, because i believe it will be another great game.
Nice game
But for some reason I'm not getting any achivements at all
I literally did all the things that achivement tasks said and completed the game but i did not got any single of it
The game is good. There's no feeling better than mulching an entire screen of bad guys at once. There are times where the difficulty spikes before going back down to what it was, and there are levels that absolutely invalidate certain builds, which is annoying when there's no way of knowing that going in. If you find it on sale for a dollar, just buy it. It's well worth it.
on the shorter side, but very re-playable. one of the best bullet-hell games I've ever played, and it's also very fun to play with a friend. while trophies are disabled in two player mode, it is a ton more fun.
A cute and interesting beat em up with a unique gimmick of forcing the player to only be able to attack in one direction. In order to make up for this the game gives you a variety of projectiles that are omnidirectional as well as a dash that can be used to dodge or combine with an attack to attack backwards or forward. This game is nice and has co-op and can be very frustrating at times and yet despite this it's still relatively easy to get S ranks. It makes you feel like you're doing awful with how many hits you might take but then still get an S rank anyway so its leniency is somewhat forgiving. The last few levels, however, I really hate due to the fact that they're all basically just long gimmicks that are annoying to play. Achievements don't seem to be working and most of the discussion boards are from years ago.
super cute and fun game for under a dollar, come on guys, this is amazing
art style is amazing and so is everything else
definitely recommended <3
Ninjin seems to have a lot of charm going for it with it's kiddish look and the writing is rather infantile when you experience it. It just seemed to rub me the wrong way.
How this game plays is that you're continually running and you're to deal with enemies in a number of waves as you move all around the field dodging and attacking when there's openings. You beat the enemies up, get to the boss and that's pretty much the sum of it. Screenshots would suggest to you that this is a typical beat 'em up, but it's half and half. It's like Excitebike if it had a beat 'em up to give you an idea.
It plays all right but I can't for the life of me, deal with how much this game tends to interrupt your gameplay. It leaves a little of a bad aftertaste, for when every new enemy is introduced, it's gotta halt everything and bring this enemy through mega man fanfare. This includes on the go tutorials too for everything you do and it's just, chipping and chipping the enjoyment you'd like to have with this game.
For what it's worth, it's overall just O.K, not the worst thing in existence but not the greatest thing either. I'd get it on sale, because full asking price is just not worth it.
Quick Description:
-Ninjin Clash of Carrots is a beat em up and twin stick shooter hybrid w/ a cast full of colorful characters and chaotic bullet hell gameplay. This game has a ton of charm, is absolutely adorable, and is really well polished. It's a bit of a one trick pony and is likely to fly under the radar, but is well worth your time if you are a fan of the genre.
What's Good:
-I'm a big fan of the art direction and Hub in between levels. There are a ton of bright colors, projectiles flying everywhere, and a wide variety of enemy types and challenges. This is a really great looking game that pretty much any Indie fan is likely to appreciate visually.
-Tons of weapons! There are hundreds of different weapon and projectile types and each one is unique and offers different strengths and weaknesses. It's a lot of fun trying out each one and seeing which one fits your playstyle. I love the creativity between banana-boomerangs to carrot swords, to bombs that bounce everywhere upon impact; there is a ton of variety.
-A good amount of content; more than the average beat em up. You probably won't finish your first playthrough for at least 5-8 hrs depending on your skill level. Being that there are a ton of weapons and several different unlockable modes, there is a good amount of reason to come back and try again later.
-Solid soundtrack that is fun and matches the tempo of the game. The sound effects also feel great and you always know when you hit an enemy which is really important in beat em ups.
-Boss fights are really challenging and quite unique. Most of the bosses are skilled based and offer a fair challenge. There are only a few moments late game that offer some cheap tricks to ramp up difficulty, but as a whole the difficulty curve progresses as you'd hope for a game like this.
Could Use a Few Changes:
-As I mentioned earlier, the only real frustrating moments were in the very last levels where bosses would take away all your weapons temporarily and make you avoid enemies and projectiles w/ nothing but your dash. This felt cruel and was by far the most tedious part of the entire game. I think they could have found a more interesting way to challenge the player.
-There is a ton of things bouncing and darting around screen, making it difficult at the most chaotic times to keep up w/ everything. This lead to me too frequently spamming the dash and attack button and hoping that things worked out. This was really only an issue in the most challenging levels where it's difficult to keep up w/ the horde of enemies, but it's still worth mentioning.
-Like so many similar games, it did start to feel repetitive late game. This may just be my preference for this genre, b/c I've ran into this problem in the last 3-4 beat em ups I've played and this is arguably the most unique beat em up I've played and I still ran into this issue.
Thoughts:
-I had a lot of fun playing Ninjin. I had very low expectations going in and expected this to be a cakewalk w/ cutesy characters. I was right about the adorable characters, but fortunately this is a much more well rounded challenging experience than I was expecting. This is a great beat em up hybrid that is not talked about enough. I really enjoyed the bullet hell elements and hope to see more games that mimic this formula, b/c it's a lot of fun.
Consensus:
-Solid Game (Tier 3 and makes up 35% of my reviews). Ninjin Clash of Carrots is a solid game that is well worth your time and attention. Don't overlook this one and add it to your library, it's a real treat to play.
It's a beat 'em up but you ninja run everywhere, fight the enemies in waves, throw shurikens as a secondary attack and you can choose from such exciting character options as ninja bun with hood or ninja fox sans hood.
The shopkeeper is a corgi that borks at you.
This is a fun game.
A charming game with great gameplay! Every part of it matches each other well to create a fun and exciting experience. The characters are cool, cute and easy to spot on the screen, the story is funny and interesting, the music gets you excited for the levels and there are great sound cues for the enemies' attacks.
Then, of course, we have the game play. Not only is it a beat'em up with a great variety of weapons (inluding projectiles) and enemies, but it is also kind of a puzzle game. With each wave of enemies bringing a new combination of challenges, you can try different approaches to get the result you want (sometimes just to beat the stage, on other times, to get the highest combo...).
I've played this game for 30 hours, often with my daughter, and will keep playing it for many more!
It is definitely a must-have in your library!
This game was way more fun than I anticipated. Worth every penny. The small gripe i have with it are how you can't see your own weapon during a cut-scene. If it has an elemental effect, that's makes it look really cool. You can only see a co-op's weapon. Not really that big of a deal. Anyways hella good time.
this game isn't AS good as the score might suggest, but its still a pretty damn good one. it does get very hard near the end though and you really gotta learn all the items and stuff to pick the right setup for the right missions. i did 100% the game. so i S-ranked everything and collected all the items. i also got to wave 80 something on endless, while the last reward is given out at 50. though this mode feels very much decided by your random itemdrops imo.
so i did everything there is to do in this game, over the almost 20 hours i needed to do so. it was a huge amount of work and getting S is incredibly hard on some stages. if you don't want to complete everything and just play through the story, you should always have fun with it, but trying to get everything, can definitely get frustrating.
overall i really enjoyed it though.
It's so good I bought it again on Steam. Originally played it on Nintendo Switch. Support the devs. There's also a Cartoon Network show currently in production based on this game!!
Awesome game to play co-op! I imagine even if the country was not on lockdown, I would enjoy playing this game.
Pros:
-Colorful and amusing visuals
-Jokes are actually funny
-Players can purchase weapons and other upgrades/items to change up combat styles
-Easy to pick up and play, with increasing levels of difficulty
Cons:
-Online co-op had some lag even though we're in the same house. Couch co-op likely a better experience.
-Despite Asian flair, no Asian language support (yet)
-If one player dies, the level is over
Overall, the game is an easy purchase, especially if on sale!
Somehow most folks (including me) seem to have missed one of the most fun hack-slash-shoot-loot arcade coop experiences of last year? With nice music and art too? No disrispect to Modus, but this should have been published by Devolver, their audience would not leave this delsih carrot dish on the table.
P.S. There's even an arena mode that works like a rogue-light challenge with rewards for the story mode.
This game game is mad. Mad. M. A. D. Really good. Not much else to say. It takes you by surprise and it is of great quality for being an indie, the online COOP mode is a lot of fun and works flawlessly, and local couch COOP works amazingly well too, very entertaining, funny, silly, and challenging. Totally recommended!
Wow, what a surprise! Tons of fun and very polished - not at all what I was expecting going in. This game is a real gem!
Im impressed I had not heard of this gem before. I can't even remember the last game that gave me such... honest fun. Streets of Rage maybe? No eternal grind, no forced repeatable quests, no waste of time with boring stuff to get to the good stuff... just the next challenge. Almost every level a new enemy, a new formation, a new boss and man does it get hard... do not get fooled by the cute graphics, this thing is brutal!
For the price and the amount of fun I had already (PS: not even close to finishing the game yet), I cannot recommend this enough. Btw, since I have no friends Im glad to say this is a lot of fun playing alone which is not true for so many games these days... but I can only imagine its at least as fun playing with others. Also by the way apparently you can play online as well, so no need to have a friend that lives with you to enjoy some co-op ass beating. Want a game to smash stuff up in berzerker mode and feel good while dash slashing 50 enemies at once and getting a load of carrots? This is the game for you.
Oh boy. This game brings me so many memories of my childhood. So many references, with a beautifully directed art and envolving sountracks, the game stands up with a simple, intuitive, and yet, very confortable and fun battle mechanics.
The lore and dialogues brings to the game a great amount of good comedy. The characters have a great charge of personality, bringing some good vibes and lots of laughs.
I'm a big fan of hard games, and the the difficult ladder of Ninjin really put me to the test many times.
So, if you are a fan of old games such as Megaman, Ninja Gaiden, Mario Bros, Double Dragon, and tons of old school games, and want a bit of challenge, make sure to give Ninjin a shot!
As someone who's played alone, with a friend, completed all the first zone, and beat the first 10 waves of endless mode, I find this game to be very enjoyable. The gameplay is unique and intuitive. The music feels nostalgic, as if I've heard it before. The game runs well, and the pixel style is nice, and doesn't feel like it gets in the way. Everything all mashed together to create this wonderful experience, and while the story isn't the best, the well-paced comedy, and everything else makes up for that. The only things I find annoying is that if one person dies in co-op mode, it's automatically a game over, and that the game can sometimes be too colorful and flashy, it gets distracting. It's a really fun game, I recommend it whether you want to play all by yourself or have a friend you want to share the experience with.
