Worms Armageddon: A timeless classic with lots of laugh-out-loud moments!

Those intrepid invertebrates return with a vengeance in the much-loved Worms Armageddon. It’s a whole new can of worms! It’s hilarious fun that you can enjoy on your own or with all your friends.

Story

Basically no story in this game, except a war between worms. A parody of war, conflict and military strategy.

Gameplay

I have so many good memories from this game. I used to play it all the time with friends when I was a kid. What is not to love about this game?

Worms Armageddon is a 2D, turn-based strategy game. You control a team of worms, fighting other worms with many fun and absurd weapons at your disposal, like the Banana Bomb, Exploding Sheeps, Super Sheep Holy Hand Grenade and a Concrete Donkey. There are also more conventional weapons like Bazookas, Grenades, Shotguns and Uzis.

Players take turns controlling one worm at a time from their team. On your turn, you can move, aim, and fire a weapon, or use a tool or utility. Each turn is timed, forcing you to act quickly and plan strategically. This is where some of the most hilarious moments occur. Suddenly you realise that you only have 3 seconds left, and in your panic you act really stupid, making bad decisions, resulting in a lot of laughter.

Positioning is critical. Worms with better cover or elevation have huge advantages. You must also account for wind, terrain, splash damage, and turn order.

The strategy and tactics blend skillful aiming, timing, and creativity with humor and unpredictability. Things do not always go the way you planned. And by the way, worms can’t swim, so watch out for the water!

You can name your team and worms. Choose voices, grave styles, flags, and victory dances. Customize weapon sets, terrain themes, and match rules.

Game Modes:
Campaign Missions: Set challenges like killing enemies with limited weapons.
Training Missions: Target practice, movement drills, and weapon use.
Deathmatch Mode: Face off against AI in increasingly tough skirmishes.
Multiplayer: The heart of the game. 2–6 teams can play on one machine or online. Customize rulesets, weapon availability, and landscape styles. Games can be short duels or long, strategic battles of attrition.

Environment

Matches take place on 2D, randomly generated landscapes (or custom ones). The terrain is fully destructible. Explosions leave craters, open up the map, or send worms flying. Maps can have preplaced mines and explosive barrels.

There are some environmental features, that include:
Water hazards: Worms drown instantly if they fall in.
Mines and barrels: Explode when triggered, adding strategic chaos.
Sudden Death: If the match takes too long, the water level rises each turn, encouraging faster play. Health drops to 1 HP for all worms.

Visual Design & Sound Design

The game is colorful and cartoonish. Despite the violence, there is no blood or so, keeping the game family-friendly. Just some cute worms at war!

The UI and menus are clear, simple and easy to navigate. Weapon icons are cartoonish, making them easy to recognize.

There are over a dozen visual styles, each giving maps a distinctive look, including:
Forest: Natural green landscapes.
Arctic: Icy terrain with slippery-looking surfaces.
Beach: Sandy, ocean-themed layouts.
Hell: Lava-filled and dark with eerie music.
Space: Moon craters and alien settings.
Construction, Jungle, Desert, Candy, and more.
These are just cosmetic. They don’t change physics, but they do enhance the atmosphere and mood. You can customize and change the terrain themes to your liking.

One of the game’s most beloved features is the voices of the worms. They are full of humor, puns, and goofy one-liners. Menus and voiceovers often parody war films and action movies. Worms speak in high-pitched and exaggerated voices. Each weapon has distinct and satisfying sounds, enhancing the cartoonish impact, like the Holy Hand Grenade that plays a choir singing “Hallelujah!” before an enormous explosion. Or a satisfying plop is heard when worms fall into water and drowns. I love it. LOVE IT.

Constructive Criticism

Not much to say here. The campaign and AI skirmishes are okay. The AI often feels either too dumb or too precise, leading to inconsistent difficulty.

The Verdict

There are not many multiplayer games where I have laughed so much as Worms Armageddon. It’s a simple game, but tough to master. A game that turns chaos into comedy, thus creating many unforgettable moments and memories. A timeless classic!

Ahh... Worms Armageddon & Worms World Party. Worms NEVER got better after these two & Worms Armageddon is the only one of the two that actually works faultlessly on Windows 10 & a HD Widescreen monitor so if you want the best Worms experience, buy this!

If you're not playing on custom 9/11 maps then you're playing the game wrong

Damn, I miss the days when I used to play this with friends on CRT monitors... 🥲 Still works great on modern hardware! (the menus are warped on ultra-wide but the gameplay scales well)

Destructible environments, cool specials attack, can play multiplayer but the sad part of it is that it is turn based, you do your turns they do theirs next, If you acknowledge that then it could be worth it for 2$ maybe 5$, 10$-15$ max 20$ and more if you are rich
