Night and day difference between playing the N64 version and this
Fun to get on sale, especially if you played the game growing up. Got about 5 hours of enjoyment from it in adulthood. It takes some skill but is not nearly as difficult as child me thought. The game has solid mechanics with the speed boost always pushing you to see how much of it you can slip into a run without total disaster. Fun cameos from many racers appearing in the movie.
Always loved this game, but this is a really terrible port. Won't even start up without dropping community created dll files into the folder. Tons of bugs and crashes.
love it classic game
I loved playing this game with my brother on the N64 when we were kids. However this PC port is just awful. It is plagued full of crashes and bugs that I have never seen happen on the N64 version. This is good for a few hours of nostalgia fun, but other than that stick to the original or an emulator.

Can't believe this is on the store, popped in to my head when thinking about some old childhood games...must have been around 1999 when I played this last on a Packard Bell machine...would love a remaster/remake!
The racer you pick will navigate around a Bar, your garage, Watto's Shop and junkyard as you navigate the games menu. You get credits for getting 1st-3rd in a race. Spend credits to upgrade the racers pod and buy pit droids to "work" in your garage. Best played with headphones.
Holds up surprisingly well for a game from 1999

Well, they were right. Here we are, still playing this game. With a perfectly good, imperfect port to play this thing on modern PCs. This game will mainly be for people wanting to take a trip down memory lane and just enjoy some of the simpler gaming times, maybe for people of that era who somehow missed this one and regretted it, and yes, maybe for any modern star wars fans who want to see what the previous generation of gamers spent their younger years enjoying. We call it the golden years and there's a reason for it.
For those who know this game and just want to know whether it works and whether it's worth it, sure is. Get it. It's a blast. I use an xbox controller without issue.
For those that need a bit more info and why this is still a good game, it offers simplicity while giving you a bit of choice, variety and a sense of high speed thrill. Pick your pod, mainly that you like the look of. Visit the junkyard for damaged parts at a discount or venture to the shop to pay full price for upgrades to your pod. Get some droids to help fix those bits you will inevitably break. Race through a tonne of maps, and this is where older games shine. You do not get this kind of variety, usually, in modern games.
Racing at first doesn't actually feel that fast, in the simple courses with un-upgraded pods it all seems a bit easy. The challenge of the courses will step up the more you do, as will the difficulty of controlling your pod once you stick some hefty speed upgrades on it. What's a bit unique about this game is the speed is not affected by cornering, the line to pick is usually the shortest you can take without crashing, rather than thinking about loss of speed from hard cornering. The game encourages you to throw the thing around and only penalises your janky piloting if you collide with anything.
So pitfalls, graphics, duh. It's a product of its time so don't expect to be blown away. Your GPU won't even notice the game is playing. Also don't expect much competition from the other AI pods, once you've mastered how to operate a pod they don't really compete, and the main thing you will be racing against is the clock. If you aren't constantly boosting and crossing the finish line with your engines ablaze then you're not really doing it right, yet.
I see many calls for a modern version, and as nice as it would be to see a modern polished version for our big shiny monitors, it won't happen. First it's from a by-gone era of Episode One and the hype of that is truly gone. Secondly, would you trust anyone now to develop this, and not release a game with 1 pod, 4 maps and nothing but loot-boxes and DLC to get the content that is included in this version as standard? Then moan when the game doesn't take off and sustain a player base? Me neither.
But it is satisfying enough for a quick blast, racing against the clock to produce an incredible time requiring absolute pin point precision handling with little to no margins for errors. Enjoy this game for exactly what it is, some simple high speed racing.
game doesn't load on newer computer but fun game
No controller support on a console port game? Sure. It also crashes on win11 and requires community support to even get running. This is the reason why people often don't like these ports, feels like a scam.
It's a simple but fun racing game. Nostalgic for us who had it as a kid.
Boots up fine and the controls are simple.

The game itself isn't even fun. Dry, sterile environments with no exciting gameplay. It was stupidly easy to come in 1st place (even on the hardest circuit) and presented zero challenge.
Holds up still as a fun arcade style racing game.

I played this game so many hours in my childhood.
Very fun and addicting game!
Probably nostalgia driven, but pretty good for the time period. Can be 100%'d in a few hours. Community controller mapping is solid. All in all, buy it on sale.
What a ride! star wars fan or not game has unique racing style its fast,racing pods and characters are funny,tracks are hard enough to be challenge.game show its age with graphics but still very enjoyble gameplay 9/10
Played this for the first time in 2024. Fun little racer, phenomenal sense of speed. All the pods are fun and intuitive to handle. The music and speed make the racing feel epic. Even when I didn't barely saw an opposing racer the entire game.
Which leads to my only complaint... it's too easy. Beat every race on the first attempt except one I think (the stage with the freaking 2-level ramps, you know what I'm talking about) and stopped bothering with upgrades like halfway through the campaign since the UI is kinda booty.
Anyway, great game and would love to see a remake. It goes on sale all the time though so I'd recommend waiting until then
I don't normally like racing games, but this is pretty fun. I played this when it came out, and went a great deal of years before getting it on Steam and playing again. Still very enjoyable.
I'm almost positive that Star Wars Episode I Racer is the only game in the long list of Star Wars games in the acing genre. Its incredible that Lucas Arts took a fun scene from Star Wars The Phantom Menace and made an entire game out of it. I highly recommend this game.
Extremely good: exhilarating sense of speed, amazing level design, gameplay simplicity contrasted with depth of play, I love the pod designs and the racers. A nearly perfect game.
Amazing how this game is still fun to play nowadays
It's been decades and the game play still feels smooth.
However I really wish we could someday see a full remake of this game, I'd love to see those pods, racers and tracks with fully up to date graphics, light and textures and game mechanics like improved ways to update your pod's parts and etc. and why not more and new tracks to interact.

YO what the fuck? At the time of this review I'm 33. I've revisited this game like 2 times after I played it when I was a kid and both times I've had to install some sort of emulator and do some arcane ritual to get it to work. Fast-forward to today where I learned that Steam has a perfectly working version just sitting in the store?? Do you fucking know how many retro games are sitting in the store at this very moment that are freely on sale with everyone and their grandma knowing that they 100% absolutely don't, and will never work? But are still blatantly on sale? But some programmer somewhere took the time to make sure this game from 25 fucking years ago still works on a machine and software that makes a '99 computer look like a McDonald's Happy Meal toy?
Thank you so much to whoever is responsible for this. I had to make a blood sacrifice to The Omnissiah in my kitchen in order for Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity to run on my PC. Meanwhile, this game that only came out a year after is easily available and runs like dream straight from the Steam store with literally zero mods or emulators. Every other dev/programmer or whatever should be put to fucking shame at having their unplayable game on the store while this one remains. Best Friday I'm gonna have in a while, so fucking nostalgic.
OG game, super fun!! Very fast paced which is what I like with this type of racing game.
