One of my favorite games of all time. There is a bit of a learning curve when getting into SA2, but stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a fun adventure.
There are three distinct play styles, each fun and rewarding to master. Things are definitely harder starting out but as you progress you get tools and abilities that make things easier. There is a ton of replayability to each stage.
Not to mention, I would pay full price for the chao garden side content alone.
It's worth it for Chao Garden but the rest of the game is also pretty good too.
This is one of the best games ever, I love that the sonic 3 movie was inspired off this game. Thank you SEGA
This game is super great! I love playing this amazing game from my childhood again, and it looks super good on PC, I'm using an XBOX controller to play and it's okay, I'd prefer to use a Gamecube controller so I'll have to buy one for PC.
The only thing that sucks, is that the battle stuff costs an extra $3. I bought it, but I wish I didn't have to.
If you're new to sonic this might not be the best game for you, but it's great if you know what you're getting into! :)
The game is running in like 4x speed and I cant figure out why, but its extremely difficult to control but it is definitely also funny
Great game with issues. Of course the speed levels are awesome and definitely an improvement on sonic levels in sonic adventure 1 in my opinion but if you compare the mech levels to Gamma's stages they're worse and the treasure hunter missions despite the better level design, only being able to track 1 emerald shard at a time is so much worse. The chao are tedious but great if you enjoy that type of gameplay and I would genuinely rather spend time in the chao garden than the actual stages sometimes. I haven't played the multiplayer so I can't say much about that. Why is there a kartracer in this game? At the end of the day the game is really fun and I'd be lying if I said it isn't incredibly hype at different points. I would highly reccomend this game to anyone whether they're a sonic fan or not
very good amazing game but knuckles missons are trash i dispise them and i hope they disenagrate and everyone forgets about it
Good story, but you gotta download mods to run it if your computer runs 60 hz. The levels can also be infuriating, but peak story
The game itself is great, which is why I bought the steam version.
Unfortunately, the steam version isn't even playable. If I hadn't waited so long to attempt booting the game, I would've refunded it when I had the chance. Do not buy the game until the errors are fixed by the developers themselves.
For the developers:
Attempting to boot the game brings me to a Settings popup. Regardless if I leave it alone or attempt to change settings, I get hit with the error "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'index'. Parameter name: index."
Attempting to Continue does nothing. Details and Quit are the only functioning options there. I can provide the full Details error if needed, seeing as the game consistently shows me the error with every attempt.
I've tried closing out and reopening, uninstalling and reinstalling, installing to my internal harddrive and external harddrive. I'm a Windows 10 user and, based on the System Requirements being updated for beyond 2024, I should be able to play the game without a problem. For settings, I appear to be missing options - namely the ability to pick an aspect ratio (clicking the dropdown shows nothing in the list, leaving full screen the only available option).
PS:
I'm aware mods exist to "fix" the game, but if the game isn't playable without mods then it's not worth buying. You're better off playing the original physical versions or finding an emulator that's better equipped to handle playing the game on your device.
If the problems get fixed, I'll gladly change my review to reflect what I actually think of the game. For now, I can't provide an accurate review until the game becomes playable.
doesn't work properly without modding on steam deck (have to use cursed keyboard inputs). If you're on steam deck it's much easier to emulate this to get native controller support than to mod this.
Its a good game(!!!), just jumping through hoops to make it work properly is time consuming; even SADX has native controller support
This is a must play. My original childhood game on the game cube. Wish they would make another Sonic adventure game and bring back chao.
Sonic Adventure 2 is not just a game; it's an experience that has etched itself in the hearts of countless gamers since its release in 2001. As a sequel to the iconic "Sonic Adventure," this game successfully builds upon its predecessor, offering a rich blend of captivating gameplay, exceptional graphics, and an engaging storyline that can enthrall players for hours on end.
From the moment you boot up the game, you are greeted with the dynamic and upbeat soundtrack that Sonic games are known for. The soundtrack of Sonic Adventure 2 is an incredible collection of tracks that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the franchise—energetic, catchy, and downright exhilarating. Songs like “Live and Learn,” performed by Crush 40, are not just background music; they elevate the experience, making each level feel alive and packed with adrenaline.
The introduction of a dual storyline—featuring both heroes and villains—adds a layer of depth that sets it apart from its predecessor. Players get to experience the conflict between Sonic and his friends, including Tails and Knuckles, against the enigmatic Shadow the Hedgehog and his scientist ally, Dr. Eggman. This dual narrative intertwines beautifully, providing players with different perspectives and motivations, making the plot feel more intricate and engaging. Shadow, with his mysterious background and tragic story, became an instant favorite for many fans, offering a compelling contrast to the bright and cheerful Sonic.
When it comes to gameplay, Sonic Adventure 2 truly shines. The game introduces a diverse array of play styles, switching between fast-paced platforming as Sonic, treasure hunting as Knuckles, and mech-shooting segments as Tails. Each character has unique abilities that affect how you approach levels, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting. The high-speed sections as Sonic are exhilarating, pushing you to master the controls to reach that perfect run, while the treasure hunting segments with Knuckles present a satisfying puzzle aspect, asking players to think critically as they locate hidden emeralds. Even the shooting segments with Tails offer a fun diversion, showcasing diversity in gameplay that ensures there’s something for everyone.
The level design is simply brilliant. Each stage is packed with intricate details, shortcuts, and opportunities for exploration. Levels like “City Escape” and “Green Forest” are iconic, filled with loops, ramps, and various obstacles that perfectly capture Sonic's speed-driven nature. The thrill of racing down slopes, performing tricks, and bouncing off enemies is unmatchable. Not to mention, the vibrant environments, ranging from urban landscapes to mystical canyons, are beautifully rendered, showcasing the graphical capabilities of the Sega Dreamcast and later, other platforms.
One of the standout features of Sonic Adventure 2 is the Chao system. This mini-game allows players to raise and nurture adorable creatures known as Chao. The depth of this system goes beyond just raising them; you can train them, enter them in races, and even customize their appearance. This feature offers a delightful contrast to the high-octane gameplay and adds a layer of strategy and care. The emotional bond you form with your Chao, coupled with their evolution based on how you raise them, is a delightful distraction and a testimony to the game's design.
Multiplayer mode is another highlight that enhances replay value. Whether racing against friends as your favorite character or competing in Chao Races, the multiplayer aspect encourages friendly competition and keeps the excitement alive well after you've finished the main campaign. The array of modes ensures that you can always find a way to enjoy the game with friends, making it a perfect choice for gatherings and nostalgic gaming sessions.
The game is great, however there are some things that can be improved such as the controls and there needs to be controller support the lack of it holds the game back on pc and space bar should be the jump key not J.
Great game. imo suffers from age, but very fun other than tails mission eternal engine. Great game overall.
Old and gold, still stands up as great fun from the Dreamcast days.
Some of the mechanics from the previous instalment have been refined in this sequel and the camera isn't as wild making it a bit easier to get to grips with. Does have some replay value as well in going through missions.
Raising Chao is a cute diversion, though not having the possibility of a DC visual memory unit means missing out on one of the main drawers of the Chao garden.
Still good though.
Absolutely amazing game. the base steam version is good for people who never played the original, but for those that want the perfect experience there's some great mods. regardless of what you decide to do when it comes to playing this game, it will almost certainly be a great time
Does the playing as multiple characters thing infinitely better than the Insomniac Spider-Man games. Sonic himself is also a ton of fun to play as, and for only $10 this is one of the best deals you'll ever get for a great game.
Sonic adventure 2 is at it's peak a thrilling momentum based platformer and at it's worst a frustrating scavenger hunt. The Sonic and Shadow levels i enjoyed a lot however they fail to explain certain core mechanics such as rail balance, trick ramps and upgrades. The earlygame also suffers from a significant lack of movement options. Certain stages for the speed characters had problems with most abilities bound to the b button such as crazy gadget. Also for some reason Sonic has more upgrades than Shadow and same with Knuckles having the air necklace over Rouge and Eggman having the protective armour over Tails. The mech stages are intresting with lots of combo potential however the lack of movement leaves me wanting more. The treasure hunting stages on the other hand are awful with half assed hints only being able to track one emerald at a time and extremely randomized locations. Next thing i want to talk about are the extra missions for each level. Mission 2 is generally very simple having you collect 100 rings to finish the stage however in the mech and treasure hunting levels it can drag out very long as these levels weren't created like the speed stages with rings being mostly replaced by a health bar in the mech stages and the treasure hunting stages having low amounts of rings. Mission three is all about finding a lost Chao which is usually a intresting hunt, however in the kart racing levels you instead have to hit no cars which can be extremely frustrating. Mission 4 is a time trial with no checkpoints it's very rewarding in the speed stages but in the mech stages it feels pointless and in treasure hunting stages RNG can play a massive role. In the kart stages mission 4 prohibits you from hitting any walls and with the time limit these stages usually have it is one of the most frustrating things I have felt in a while. Mission 5 is a hard mode which is very boring and repetitive losing most of the stages original charm EXCEPT for the treasure hunting stages which now have 3 hard to reach but set emerald locations making them far more enjoyable. A large critique i have over this game is it's accesibility it's impossible to change any volume based settings the game controls awfully without a controller and unless the game is at 60FPS it will run faster than usual. Another complaint is that the camera is clunky and difficult to control. The Chao garden aspect of the game is super grindy and tedious. The plot is simple but had me engaged most of the way through. A major dissapointment for me is the boss fights they are extremely simple and easy and when they aren't they are downright unfair. I would recommend giving this game a shot for the Sonic and Shadow levels alone.
What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said? You know why people love this game. You will love this game. I think everyone who likes the 3D Sonic formula needs to play SA2. One of the games ever
Great OG classic. sonic adventure 2 is a great game and i totally recommend it but i would be lying if i said i had no problems with it. first i had this weird graphical bug where everything was ghosting and it would hurt my eyes and i never found a fix for it. second knuckles and rouge missions i hated! it wasn't fun and they were annoying to control imo. and third when they we're porting sonic adventure 2 to the gamecube (which is this version) the way SEGA consoles detected stick input was different in some way which would cause issues in some games (this included) too have some stick sensitivity issues when ported and this games rail grinding is one of them. so instead of leaning into turns for speed basically any tap of the stick will kill momentum which sucks. but besides those issues i think its a great game and i totally recommend!
I love this game so much. It has a great storyline and AMAZING music! Would recommend any sonic fan to play this
I have nothing but good things to say about SA2, I own both the GameCube copy and this one and one day I dream (haha) of having the DreamCast version as well. This game is super nostalgic to me and I could play it over and over again. the game play is mildly infuriating at times but otherwise super fun and full of charm!
raise chao is fun and also takes awhile it takes 3 hours for first evolution and 30 for second whether they reincarnate or dies is decides on they are not happy they turn into a gray cocoon there dieing if you leave the garden and leave you can pet them a bunch and they will reincarnate and turn into a pink cocoon
and blue cocoon is first evolution
THIS GAME IS FUCKING CANCER DONT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO COoRPERATE HITLER FOR THIS FUCKING GAME EVER
This game is one if the bests i have ever played in my entire f***ing life and I played a lot. The only one that i think that beats it is shadow generations but other than that it is definitely the 2nd best Definitely recommend for new and recurring fans of sonic also the battle dlc is a must buy don't think twice BUY IT
This is the best game of all time. I have 3 copies. Listening to Live and Learn is a religious experience for me
The upgrade of everything tech-wise from Adventure 1 to 2 is incredible and has no god awful fishing levels to boot.
great game
not so great pc port
controls are mostly broken without the use of mods
Imma kys why is it taking seven hourse to download mods sa mod manager go fuck urself but like im a sonic feind
This game is awesome. So good that Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is based off it! We just gotta *Live and Learn* to see what happens next!
Amazing game, City escape still one of the best sonic levels! - Highly recommended for sonic fans.
This game was so good they made a whole movie about it.
Then that movie was so good that it completely humiliated Disney so hard that they tried buying out SEGA.
It's Sonic Adventure 2, you shouldn't need me to tell you to play it....... Why aren't you playing it yet? Stop reading reviews and start playing, you have A ranks to get and Chao to raise.
well even in 2024 this game is still good i wasent even born wen this game came out and is still good if you want a old school game or play it for nastirger is a Master pice of a game and i highly recomedend it
Very fun! My friend had recommended this game to me along with some mods, which are completely optional, though they make the game a much better experience in my opinion. The stage design is amazing and the story is great! The voice acting is nice and goes great with both sides of the story tying in with each other. The game play is intuitive and immersive. I would absolutely recommend this game!
This game is really fun. My heart brings me back to, when I was a child. This game is top 3 best Sonic Games ever. <3
this game is simpilly amazing, its fun and i just love the chao garden. but the worst thing, i dont know why, but the game keeps freezing for like 2 seconds every 10 seconds. i dont know why this happens, and it does affect the gameplay. but apart from that, this game is amazing
fun and challenging game, a must play if you are a fan of the Sonic franchise or games that involve trial and error.
bought it on sale for 5$ and after roughly 8 hours of gameplay, i wouldn't recommend it. only about 40% of those 8 hours where sonic levels (which, to be fair, where pretty alright even for todays standarts) and the knuckles / tails levels also take quite a lot longer than the sonic ones. the cutscenes show their age in terms of graphics with some of them even being 3:4 instead of 16:9. the facial animations are also de-synced and voice lines sometimes overlap (this doesn't seem to apply when the game is set to japanese from what ive heard). the camera is janky and mostly can't be controlled and the whole game feels like a chore to play (apart from a few sonic levels like city escape). The music is a banger tho
I'm sure it's a good game but I can't tell due to it being unplayable. Even following guides to mod the game to "fix" it still leaves the game crashing after the first cut-scene, I'm not sure how a game could be less playable than New Vegas but here it is, just emulate it don't bother with trying to fix this, waste of time and money.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a fantastic game that truly captures the essence of what makes Sonic so beloved. Released on the Sega Dreamcast, it blends fast-paced action with a compelling story and memorable music. The game is split into two sides: the Hero side, featuring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and the Dark side, where you play as Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and Rouge. This dual narrative adds depth and variety to the experience.
The gameplay is incredibly engaging, with Sonic's stages offering high-speed platforming, loops, and tricks that keep the action exciting. The addition of rail grinding adds a new layer of fluidity to the movement. On the Dark side, the game shifts focus, offering slower-paced, puzzle-solving stages with unique abilities for characters like Shadow and Eggman, giving players a refreshing change of pace.
The music is a standout feature, especially with tracks like "Live and Learn," which perfectly complements the game's intensity. Plus, the Chao Garden is an addictive mini-game that allows players to raise and care for cute Chao creatures, offering hours of additional fun and replayability.
With solid graphics, an engaging story, and diverse gameplay, Sonic Adventure 2 remains one of the best games in the Sonic series and a must-play for any fan of platformers.
The game lags like crazy, making sonic's main form of attack borderline impossible to pull off. I made it to Green Forest before giving up. Childhood game I loved to play. Wish they remastered this and SA1 instead of remastering Sonic Generations. Current port is unenjoyable
wont run in 4k . even though i have more then enough to run it. Then the controller wont work with it . its more of a headache to try to deal with so i might just return it .
Gameplay still holds up to this day, and modding only enhances the experience.
Game doesn't work, regardless of userconfig fixes. Games likely not going to get fixed
ah yes let's sell a game on our platform that doesn't work without mod patches
Great game and a classic indeed. I do love this game a lot but man some of the level design is horrid and made me want rip out my eyes. But it's all worth it to hear live and learn at the end. Perfect song and perfect ending. Def recommend.
I got my wife hyperfixated on sonic with this game :)
i grew up with this game, so points on nostalgia too
Good game. Don't like Tails though. Especially Stage 13 on the Space colony Arc. Not only is it a bad tails level, it keeps crashing. No other stage does this. Just stage 13. This game wants to continue my suffering...
