Описание

A creativity-driven RPG about a rundown theatre and pleasing its unruly clientele.

Nobody said that opening a theatre on the wrong side of the river was going to be easy! The roof may be leaking, and the audience may be armed to the teeth, but nothing is going to stop the Rainsdowne Players from becoming the premier (and only!) theatre troupe in town!

Features:

  • Correctly handle 'friendly encouragement' from your audience, in the form of thrown bottles, tomatoes and even the occasional fish.
  • Collect inspiration cards from the audience, and combine them to concoct new plays to please the pickier customers.
  • Hang out with a homeless cat who likes board games.
  • Convince the ticket desk clerk not to leave her dead end job.
  • Survive a boss battle in the form of several hundred disinterested schoolchildren.
  • Plays like if Paper Mario and Majora's Mask had a child, but the father was secretly Rhythm Tengoku.

The Rainsdowne Players is an RPG about winning hearts and minds. Explore the town of Rainsdowne and get to know the peculiar inhabitants, all of whom may have a particular play they want to see, even if they don't realise it yet! Gather inspiration in the form of cards and use it to build the narrative of your next show, but it's never quite that simple and whether dodging projectiles or surviving a sword fight, you've got to actually make it through the performance in one piece!

A note from the Rainsdowne Tourist Board:

Due to a faulty and irreversible weather charm several hundred years ago, the town of Rainsdowne does get an awful lot of rain, but don't let that dampen your spirits! There's lots to see and do around town:

  • Try and sink some questionably depicted pirates at the cannon range.
  • Take part in our lively card battling scene. There's always a tournament running.
  • Enjoy some surprisingly relaxing fishing by the docks.
  • Enjoy some surprisingly non-relaxing yoga in the park.
  • Take to the stage at the Royal Flush bar, which was definitely not a public washroom only a few weeks ago.

This is a fun, simple game that requires a little bit of skill in reflexes to play. The idea of building up your fan base for your two person acting troupe is cute, and collecting cards and getting check marks in Snail's hint book were what really kept me playing this game before the story started to kick in. It's a very small environment that you're playing in, and you spend a lot of time playing the same mini games over and over to earn coins and unlock new cards which can be pretty big cons if you don't really enjoy collecting as a game concept.

It's a genuinely interesting little town so if you like to talk to NPCs and complete collections, you'll like this game. There's three ways you can put on performances, so when you get tired of one you have two others you can switch too. There's also a card game and a shooting game where you can simply earn money and not worry about putting your ideas in order for a play. I do want to note that I personally had a lot of trouble getting the timing right for the singing performance, so in reality I only had two options for putting on a performance. Again I don't know if this is just me, or if the timing really is off for the singing performance.

Once you advance in the story, the plays become less about your reflexes and more about solving puzzles to please certain audience members; to get them to love your play and give you a new card, you have to put the proper cards in the proper order when creating your play. As it turns out, I'm not that great at putting the cards in the right order. I don't even have half of the card collection and I'm already stuck in the game, unable to figure out how to put on the right play even for audience members that only have one or two requirements for loving your play.

Though you can pay Snails for hints on the proper cards, they won't tell you the proper order. Talking to audience members doesn't necessarily reveal the order that they want the cards to be in either. While some of the requests are easy enough to logically set up into a proper story, some requests are so vague all you can do is just keep making up different plays and hope one hits. Given how repetitive the mini games are, it gets frustrating very quickly. I would like to keep playing and finish what is honestly an interesting story, but no one has made a guide for this game or done a complete play through, so there's no outside help to get you past a part you're stuck on.

Since I can't in good conscience say this is a fault of the game, I still recommend it.

A charming and fantastic RPG that manages to be full of expression despite on the surface being quite simple. From its pixel art and writing that depicts a vibrant and unique fantasy setting, to its series of minigames that cover everything from crafting and performing a play to card battles to fishing. Rainsdowne Players isn't without its rough edges but it's the kind of strange and wonderful little game that we absolutely need to see more of in this world.

WOW!

I honestly didn't expect too much when I played it for the first 15 minutes. Small map. Uninteresting npcs. Repetitive.
Then the story starts to unfold and more places are unlocked and if you don't like to play on the stage, you can still have other options to proceed with it which is a good idea.

This game is very well balanced with regards to the pace of the story and the length of each round. It is definitely worth the price of under $5! I am only about 25-35% done with the game at 3.8hrs :)

Long story short, The Rainsdowne Players is delightful, full of charm, and unique. If you're the type of person who enjoys games which focses on its great, lighthearted writing, but still have well-developed game mechanics that compliment the story, then you should strongly consider this game.

You control two actors, a boy and a girl (both which you name) as they put on plays to entertain the people of the town. You'll go through the town as both characters to gather ideas for plays, such as possible settings, characters, or objects you can use. Then, you put these ideas together to compose a story. Each story has five parts: a main subject, a location, a goal for the subject, a twist, and an outcome. You can try figuring out good combinations of stories, but you are also encouraged to talk to people to gather hints on what they want to see in a play. With that said, you are also heckled during your plays; audience members will throw a variety of items at you during your play, and you have to dodge them in order to finish the play. Dodging is simple (press left for the character on the left to dodge, andpress right for the character on the right to dodge), but it gets harder to dodge everything the more plays you consecutively finish. Between the challenge of dodging everything the audience throws at you and getting to see the characters put on these plays, these performances are very enjoyable to play through.

The game's writing is very well done. The characters are enjoyable to read and watch and the game has some funny moments. Further, the game has a great ability to provide you new twists to keep the game fresh and interesting. There are two alternatives to puttingo n plays (dramatic sword fighting and karaoke) which provide different gameplay challenges, and there are other gameplay twists and surprises to keep you on your toes. Overall, it's a very entertaining, fun adventure.

My biggest frustrationg with the game is that it can be hard to figure out exactly what plays some town members want to see. While there is an in-game hint system, it is purposefully limited; oftentimes it will not tell you what you need to know in order to please town members. With that said though, the main story is straight-forward enough; the only times I felt like I didn't know what to do next, the solution was for me to just pass through another in-game day before something happened.

Overall, I recommend this game. It's one-of-a-kind, well-designed and, of course, does not cost much as well. I really enjoy it when I find hidden gems, which means that I loved finding this game.

In Short: Adorable and charming game that has an interesting playstyle and several fun mini-games to keep the player engaged and interested

This game...it's sort of difficult to explain properly. You play through the game as one of two main characters (whom you can name. In my game my viewers named them SANIC and Tails :P) trying to revive a rundown theater by putting on various plays. How you produce the plays is one of the more interesting mechanics: you pick a different 'card' for the different plot points of the play (Subject, Location, Purpose, Encounter, and Outcome). You can either try and appease the audience by catering to their desires for what they want to see on stage, or go in your own weird path (Can anyone say ALL BEAR ALL THE TIME?!). When you act out the play, you have to be on your toes: the audience will throw things at you.EVEN IF THEY LIKE YOU...one must suffer for their art, it seems.

The problem is, you only start off with a limited number of cards, and have to go exploring and fulfilling quests and minigames to unlock more. This is where the game can be hit or miss. Some people will love the minigames, while others may tire of them quickly, especially since money seems to flow slowly (at least at first) and time seems to move quickly.

That's the other thing: the game has a clock, and it's ALWAYS running. Talking to NPCs? Time's ticking. Doing a minigame? Time's ticking. Putting on a play? Yep...time's ticking. To me it made me feel rushed as I tried to unlock and do all the different things in the game. Each in-game day only has about 8-10 minutes of useable time in it before it's too late to do anything and you need to sleep. At least the time would only change if you changed maps (going inside a room, for example) so if you were trying to accomplish something at a particular area, the game would at least be forgiving in this aspect.

Finally, the UI could use some work. Hitting Esc simply brings you back to the title screen (the game autosaves, thankfully) and hitting X brings up your HUD with shows gold and the time. Navigating through other in-game menus you find, such as the ideas book for unlocking what people want to see, is very clunky. You have to buy hints for what people want to see, but there was zero indication of WHICH hint you were unlocking...so I spent far more gold on a page just trying to unlock one thing when it would unlock the others.

On the whole...I liked it. It's charming, different, and unique. The art style fits it perfectly, and it's all really well done and expressive, even for having no nose ;P

+Unique Gameplay Mechanics in the play, and putting it on
+Tons of minigames to keep players engaged and interested
+Interesting story that keeps you wanting to move it forward
+Rules for the minigames are explained clearly
+Lots of areas to explore and NPCs to chat up for ideas for plays

=The character moves a little slower than I would have liked, especially since you are on a timer
=Gold was harder to earn, but almost every task you do earns some
=What people want to see can be kind of hit or miss, depending on which order you do it in, and if you use the special hint book or not

-The timer makes the game feel far too rushed
-Clunky, unintuitive UI, aside from the minigames, makes navigating menus difficult and unwieldy
-Lacks true direction. While there is an end-game, how to get there is muddy, and almost TOO open for the player to find.

If you're the kind of person who loves talking to every person in an RPG town, then this is the game for you! Everybody has something different to say and the plays are really customisable. The dodge mechanic is thankfully easy to learn in the early parts of the game for those who are rubbish at reaction times like I am, haha.

It's a fun little game and the art is just super.
