The game is like a museum tycoon game and the geological explanations are minimum but helpful. A wee tutorial would be helpful as I had no idea what to do at first and what all the tools were used for.
The game really needs a tutorial, as I wasn't able to figure out what to do in my 7 minutes of playtime. The interface is primitive and the game looks like it was made in the 90's. But I still recommend this game. Why? It's a game about Geology, and it's a museum running simulator. I don't regret buying this at all and I look forward to learning to play it when I have more time.
This has the potential to be a very nice little game, but the user interface needs a little tweaking. Still, well worth the price.
First of all, I have to unplug my secondary monitor when I start the game. Otherwise the screen size and placement will not work. It's okay to plug in again, though. I can even move the game window to the external screen without any problems. Adjusting monitor settings back and forth might solve the problem if you have only one screen. If I understood the reviews correctly, somebody actually got a refund because of this! Some customer support might have been a better solution...
You NEED TO watch the tutorial videos first. And watch them carefully. There is no narration, only example play. And it's not comprehensive. (I'm not sure if I should tell you to use Research Notes to increase the likelihood of finds at a dig site, because figuring this out by yourself might improve your experience...) But the videos are not linked properly on YouTube. You may not recognize them from the search result list, and autoplay does not queue them correctly. Click the in-game tutorials link, and surf from the publishers channel to get all the content.
In-game Help icons should be on as a default. They're not at the moment. Click them on when you start, and you will have a slightly easier time getting accustomed to things.
Developers: The audio slider is way too difficult to work! Do something about this, please?
Allowing duplicate samples will help your museum gain prestige sooner. It's really no big thing. There's limited space in exhibition categories, but you can take samples off the collection when you find something better. It would be nice to have an in-game record of all the finds through all the game time, whether exhibited or not. As there isn't, I wrote mine on Notepad.
Much of the game consists of hitting the space bar for Next Turn, while you wait for your geologists to get to sites, or for more pickaxes to accumulate. This is likely to annoy you in the beginning, but it will be less of a bother as the game progresses and you get more to think about.
There's lots and lots of tools needed to get to and access sites, but the only ones I've had shortages of have been maps, visas and pickaxes. It might be more interesting if some of the other tools they were more scarce, and if it were possible to trade them with the computer opponents. Or sell and buy at some free market... I would've been willing to pay a bit more for some extra functionalities like that.
As other reviewers have said, the learning experience is probably better if you haven't got a lot of prior knowledge about geology. Still, I consider The Geology Game a good investment.

I'll be honest, I got a refund for this, because when I started it the window was real messed up to the point that some of the options in game (related to actually playing) where un-clickable
I picked this game because not only it was inexpensive but also it was potentially good educational game for my children to learn about geology, minerals, and ancient life on Earth. Once you know how to play and use the interface, it becomes entertaining in a limited manner. After two days with the game, I had my fill. The value of the game is not so much from its playability but rather from the joy of building your museum with fossils and minerals from your increasingly skilled geologists going all over the world breaking rocks and revealing what is inside the rocks. As you build and enrich your museum’s portfolio of fossils and minerals, you get some satisfaction. If one uses the links from the exhibits (they themselves do not communicate much), one can learn much about the different types of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic bedrocks; minerals like silicates, ores, gems, precious metals, oxides, sulfates, sulfides, oxides, carbonates and phosphates; and animals and plants from the Paleozoic, the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic.
CONS:
• The interface is not the easiest to use
• Considerable trial and error to figure how to play
• Boring repeating click-click-click on breaking rocks, limited replayability
PROS:
• Potentially educational for amateurs and children if used properly (clicking the links on the exhibits to websites on the internet to learn about the minerals/fossils)
• Potentially entertaining (review) for people who studied geology and ancient life
RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE GAME:
• Provide some mystery to put together to unifying patterns about our geological past (i.e. Pangea based on where the fossils were found)
• More science involved in trying to find the fossils and minerals within the rocks
Not very fun or educational.
My degree is in Geology and I work with rocks at a mine as my job. Surprised to see a game like this, so I kept it on my Wishlist for a long while before giving it a shot.
The game plays more like a Museum Tycoon. You manage a museum and send Geologists to explore sites across the globe. Their finds fill your museum, attract visitors, gain investments, and let you expand and search more exotic locations.
The geology is solid, but very basic. Not that that's a bad thing on its own, perhaps I hoped for more advanced details.
Each of the "ingredients" you collect aren't very flavorful or interesting, just ClipArt-level pictures. I didn't see these "ingredients" as anything more than tools strictly to advance the game, like keycards in DOOM.
While I like this game's idea in principle, its execution leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps if the rocks and minerals and fossils collected were a system with more depth, this would hold my attention.
(also needs Arizona DLC, why the heck we gonna skip over the Grand Canyon and all the copper out here?)
Great game. A little confusing, but i love it! 10/10
This game is really fun just to play for an hour or two, especially if you like prehistory and the creatures that come with it. I hope there will be more updates to improve the game.
As a geology student, I've enjoyed the couple of hours I've put into the game so far. There was a bit of a learning curve, but between the in-game tips and the short guides available from the developer, I've managed to catch on. I would have liked to see more in the way of facts about the different types of rocks and fossils, such as their depositional environment, composition, etc., but all in all it's a fun game with just enough material to help with reviewing what you already know or are in the process of learning. I'm hoping there are future expansions/updates in the works, but I feel my money was well spent at this point.
