I absoloutly LOVE Universe Sandbox, it is a sandbox game [obviously] but for space, you can create absoloute beasts with MASSIVE stars and planets! And also small earthlike planets, speaking about earthlike there is an index called life likelyhood [it is XTREEEEMLY unbiast] and its almost impossible to get to 95% life likelyhood let alone 100% and the Earth similarity index is well idk earth isnt even on top 4 both earth is about 92,1% life likelyhood and for earth similarity index 4 Earth is like 99,3% or something but you can make almost ANYTHING custom systems, destroying planets in wierd and fun ways, getting ideas and testing stuff from youtubers and twicth streamers and etc.,

It's a really amazing simulator game but the only problem was that it was lagging for me and i don't play on a toaster. The second problem was that there's not much content.

I bought this to simulate a fictional system for writing. I wanted to get a realistic idea of how planets would behave to create in-depth story telling. This sandbox does offers many features that most simulators do not, however, it is so horribly counter-intuitive that it can only effectively be used by experts, and most of them will still have difficulty using the controls. To be clear, there are plenty of people who are proficient with this simulation, however, becoming proficient is an arduous task that most will find undesirable.

Biggest dislikes
1) It is very difficult to align whole systems.
If you manually move a planet, it almost always leaves its satellites behind (moons and other orbiting objects), which makes editing your systems very difficult and time consuming. The settings have an orbital parent designation, so it makes no sense why the satellites of an orbital parent would not follow the parent setting.

2) Controls are clunky and difficult to use.
They are optimized only for VR, and even then, they are very counter-intuitive. I spent so much time looking up basic features or adjusting controls for keyboard & mouse settings, that I hated using this Sandbox. The lack of guidance took all joy out of creating solar systems. Generally, when someone must spend more time on YouTube figuring out how something works, or worse, simply getting it to work, over actually using the Sandbox it is a fail on the Developers side. Between truly horrible default controls and a passing attempt at a laughable tutorial, the learning curb to use this Sandbox is a massive deterrent.

3) While this sandbox could be a useful educational tool for many children to explore, it has a multitude of complicated mechanics and menus with little to no explanation.
This leaves most children spending 2 minutes playing with universal billiard balls and blowing up stars before they are bored and lose interest. Simple explanations and goals could make this into a fun and engaging sand box but sadly that does not exist. If children cannot figure out how something works, then they won’t learn from it. Without in-simulation guidance they will give up and the same is true of adults. The more arduous it is to create or correct effects the less appealing they are to use.

4) For a Universe Sandbox, a lot is still missing. You get space marbles (Planets), stars (Glowing Planets) and asteroids/toys. That is, it!
All rings are giant asteroids (very sparsely populated), and they are very poorly optimized. Weak PCs or VR will struggle in any complicated or well-developed systems. There are gases but you must blow up stars to add them to the sim, and they are gone in seconds so forget creating any nebula. There is a very limited number of stars so forget properly setting up pulsars or binary systems. The only way to make them work is to cheese the settings, so if you are trying for a realistic simulation it will rely on space magic to exist.

5) There is a very limited number of Planet Textures or Skins, and terrain manipulation is very underdeveloped.
No matter what you do to Earth the same cities show up in the same places even if the planet is bombarded into a molten lump of rock and then cooled with entirely different land formations. The Devs created a topographical tool for planets, but they did not bother to make oceans or civilizations adhere to that tool. At most civilizations will avoid areas that are too hot or cold provided they line up with the 20th century, civilization map of Earth.

6) The sand box only moves forward, so if you accidentally change a setting that destroys your system you must load a save to get it back.
This makes saving into a religion, and with the exceedingly clunky menus it is painful to fix what would otherwise be minor mistakes. Literally, I had a writer load 48 times in a 45-minute writing exercise. He learned nothing from his simulation because he spent all his time dealing with lengthy load screens, and every change he made failed to help him figure out what he was doing wrong.

As a teaching tool this Sandbox fails to engage students. It is only useful in lectures or as a teaching aid for educators, "who have way too much time on their hands and the patience to work around all its failings."
Yes, it offers features that others do not, but it matters little if they are too difficult to use or understand. For these reasons I cannot recommend this sandbox. It is literally hours of unfulfilling time tinkering with frustrating interfaces, just so you may arrive at a fraction of what you hoped for.

Blowing up Earth equates to about 3 minutes of fun, before it gets old. Add in stars and you get 1 more minute before you are board. If you sent hours blowing up rocks, well then you are treating this as a collision simulator and not a universe simulator.

I really like the game, do not get me wrong. It's fun and cool for a couple hours. My biggest issue, and the reason I'm giving it a negative review, is that it feels more and more like a 'Planet Collision Simulator' than an actual Universe Sandbox. And that's fine, but just advertise it correctly.

TLDR: if you're here for the collisions, go for it. If you want an actual astrophysics simulator that you can let your system-building imagination run wild, perhaps US isn't it (or I haven't figure out how to make US be).

I wanted a game/software where I could experiment with astrophysics and do my conworlding. I want to try and make a binary, trinary, quarternary star system without having to become an astrophysicist. I want to try and have two systems orbiting each other. But it's just so not there. It is clunky to try and set things and I feel like everytime I make a mistake, I have to start again. I want to have a complex system and land on one of the planets and see the night sky.
And I get this impression, i.e. that this is a collision simulator, by not only playing the game, but seeing the road map (everything graphics related so that collisions and explosions are prettier) and the developers comment ("Currently, our orbit paths only handle objects orbiting a single parent, not a system of parent objects. We'd like to improve this at some point in the future, but we don't have a timeline for it yet.").

Otherwise, it is fun for a couple hours! Saying different "what ifs".
I just don't think it was worth the investment for me.

This rating of this game is a neutral for me. P/N Pg.

P: It is game that you create planets, stars, galaxies, etc. i enjoy this game sometimes because you could create your own star system or galaxy.

N: The game has issues when you speed up time by a lot and suddenly the simulation just gets stuck to a low level which makes me stop making these custom systems.

"10/10, finally a game that lets me blow up planets without any real-world consequences!"

Universe Sandbox is like the ultimate science fair project gone hilariously wrong! You ever sit back and think, “What if I could just hurl a planet into another and watch it explode in a spectacular cosmic fireball?” Well, this game lets you do exactly that—and then some! It's like the universe is your personal fireworks display, and you’re the pyromaniac in charge.

From the moment you boot up the game, you’re greeted with endless possibilities: create a solar system, mess with gravity, and send planets crashing into each other like they’re in a cosmic demolition derby. Seriously, there’s nothing more satisfying than watching a planet go KABOOM! and realizing that you’re the proud owner of an intergalactic mess!

The best part? You can pretend you’re a serious scientist while wearing a goofy grin as you launch a black hole at a star and giggle like a child at the glorious destruction. It’s educational, it’s chaotic, and it’s the perfect outlet for those who always wanted to be the villain in a sci-fi movie!

Pros:

Visually stunning explosions that put Fourth of July fireworks to shame.

Endless creative possibilities for destruction and creation.

Educational content that makes you feel smart while you blow stuff up!

Cons:

It can be overwhelming if you actually try to learn physics—just stick to the explosions!

Sometimes the game glitches, and instead of a planet, you might end up with a rogue taco flying through space.

No planets were harmed in the making of this review… but I can’t say the same for the ones I’ve played with.

Final Thoughts: If you’ve ever wanted to be a cosmic mad scientist with a penchant for explosions, Universe Sandbox is the perfect

Alright so I think its about time I make a review for this game, i've played it since 2016 or so.

TL;DR: 9/10

The game isn't really a "game" in my opinion, but a simulation you can mess with. It has a lot of things at play constantly and for some can be used to learn about space in general. Lots of exciting things in the future for the game.

Full Review

Below is a full review I've made for the game, including all details I wanted to share in it.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Universe Sandbox is straight forward. It's what the name implies, a "sandbox" of the "universe". What you're able to do is to observe solar systems, either real-life ones like our own or even community made systems. You can also create your own solar systems, and work on the details down to the specific minute details, like the colors of a planet, if it has rings or not, its axial tilt, its temperature, its composition, and so on. It's very robust with what you're able to do. It gives you a little guide for the Solar System which I think really helps new players, as It includes some simulations that introduces a few mechanics of the game, like the gravity physics.

Graphics

By no means is it 1:1 to real life. However that's not a bad thing. This game still looks very nice for what it is. compared to the first game it is MUCH more detailed, especially with supernovae you can create. they look spectacular! The graphics for colliding objects is also nice to see too. It shows the actual heat of the place hit with an asteroid for example, and you can TELL it was an asteroid or another small object.

Simulations

The simulations in Universe Sandbox are pretty wonderful to see. There's all kinds: real-life systems, like our solar system, and nearby star systems, theoretical solar systems, and even plain wacky simulations, where theres like dozens of moons orbiting Earth. The cool part is you can make your own simulation, and it's up to you on if it's gonna be a planet system, solar system, or even a group of stars. It's truly limited by your imagination. And I didn't even go into the community simulations; a near endless supply of experiences that really makes this game a wonderful experience for those who love space.

Future Updates

I know for a fact the developer(s) of this game are really dedicated and it shows. This game has been worked on for nearly, if not a whole DECADE. and It seems to continuously get updates, with more updates in the future planned- even ambitious ones!

Honestly because of that and because of just how much you can do, experiment with, change, learn and experience, Universe Sandbox is a great and fun experience for space lovers like me.

Easy 9/10. Only drawback is there's still more to come. But that's also a good thing. I know the developers are really putting in effort. The next generation graphics update especially looks phenomenal. So if you're okay to wait a bit for the ambitious updates ahead, absolutely get it.

I love this game. I loved the original/ first game. I was an early supporter of the first game. Whichever update that took out the sliders for planet materials, my monkey brain cannot work with it. The update definitely added a lot more detail for planet materials and gases, but again, my monkey brain does not work well when trying to make a planet habitable or look how I want it to look. Still love this game, but I probably wont be playing it too much.

Great for simulating space. A bit unrealistic when it comes to the finer details, but the large-scale collisions work really well. Excited to see what direction this game goes!

It's cool if you can work with the terrible UI and controls. SpaceEngine controls way better.

I use Universe Sandbox for educative purposes at my astronomy club. It's mainly an excellent representation of the solar system, to scale. There are also other interesting scenes to load, like constellations with stars at their real distances, or the simulation of the collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda.

The sandbox aspect is interesting, you can smash planets together or add a black hole in the solar system. It's funny at the beginning, but got old pretty quickly for me. I prefer focusing on the simulation/education part.

Space is cool, but riddled with concepts our monkey brains cannot grasp. This is an infinitely fun way to sidestep the mind-bending scales and speeds we're dealing with, and just lets you "get a feel" for the cosmological by enabling you to simulate just about every "what if..." scenario you can dream up.

Figure out what a planet with earth-like conditions would look like if it were to orbit some star like Betelgeuse, simulate what were to happen to Earth if suddenly, our Sun were to be replaced with a black hole of identical mass (ie switch off the sun), throw giant teapots at the surface of Mars, or add mass to Jupiter until it ignites and becomes a bona-fide star, or increase the density of Earth until it collapses in on itself into a new black hole... Do whatever, the universe is essentially infinite, as are the dreadful or wonderful things you can do in a universe sandbox.

A great experience for nerds like me. You want to crush a planets into each other? You got it! You want to disassemble a planet putting it onto an orbit around a small black hole? We got you covered!
The amount of an effort put into this game is astonishing. The Newton's mechanics works pretty well.
Now, don't get me wrong: this is not a game that amuses players with visuals. But this game (akin to the KSP) is the one of its own kind, and one can't get such experience anywhere else.

The interface is decent and comfy. The amount of features is mind boggling. One can explose a planet, accelerate it, or bombard with water, methane or whatever is added to the game. What buys me is that the content flow has not shrunk for nearly a decade as of now and I wonder what this game would look like in a couple of years.

Warning: even on my RTX 4090 the gas clouds cause a drop below 20 fps.

I love space, but the VR mode on this is so badly done, that i booted it up and just immediately lost interest. the Bindings suck, its overly sensitive or not sensitive enough, there's no way to ground yourself with a steady plane of reference, so its easy to feel lopsided. the menu floats in space with no way to attach it to your wrist where it should be, and the UI is so jarring. text is way too big, object orbit paths are much too thick. stars arent bright at all.

This is a highly realistic game in which, as the title suggests, you can do whatever you want (as long as your computer can handle it). I would recommend this one if you like space or if you sometimes get annoyed and want to fire a laser at earth (because you can do that :0)
