Best game for automotive enthusiast, this game has 3 things to offer. Either you could look through the fascinating art of internal combustion. Number 2 you can literally make any type of car possible using multiple different body's and fixtures to create your dream car, then export it to a hyper realistic car sim! And finally, the business. I'm not really the business type of guy but the campaign allows you to run your own automotive industry, so you can mange prices sales and different ways to stay rich from the 1940's to the 2020's. I tried the campaign out but sadly I am not such an intellectual. This game was worth it.
Fantastic game, extremely detailed engine builder and wonderful car designing. The community is super caring and really helpful, the only thing that sucks is the community manager MrChips, they have no sense of humor. Cars are extremely easy to import in beam and run very smoothly, DLC is worth it and would 100% recommend to a friend.
Still needs a ton of work, but i really enjoy playing around with my creations in beamng
If i had to say one thing to the developers, its to be less stubborn about the game's development and listen to the community more
Fantastic for making stuff for BeamNG.
Other than that the campaign is TERRIBLE. I don't think I've played something so unintuitive since shovelware text games. I want to enjoy it, afterall the campaign is supposed to give incentive to creating this stuff, but MAAAN. Holy hell. For starters the whole campaign is just a fucking spreadsheet, but that's ok, I know how a graph works and I can sorta read. So you make your first car, (the fun bit) and put it into production. "Putting it into production" = ticking fifteen boxes, clicking yes thirty times, and sitting there with the game on fast forward while you wait to see what happens. 3 years goes by, and you because you absentmindedly clicked 14 boxes instead of 15, absolutely nothing has happened, nothing was produced and your car is now obsolete.
So you figure that out, get production running, but now since your car is already 5 years late to market, you'd better get to work on the facelift model with an updated powertrain. Luckily that's the fun part. Now you fuck around trying to get it put into production, and sit there and wait again. 3 years rolls by, and nothing has happened because you forgot to sign some fucking thing off on the engineering side, and you drive your fist through your monitor.
Otherwise yeah it's pretty neat 8/10
Great simulator and generally very underrated if you have the money to buy it and are interested in cars do it
This is the honest review of a sort-of "veteran" player. I've personally been using Automation since 2019, and have over 350 hours on the game. Let me give you my full beliefs and opinions about the game, especially targeted at new players and/or potential buyers.
The Pros:
- Very in-depth sandbox mode; includes designing of chassis, engine, visuals, interior, suspension, etc.
- Limitless** fun and creativity within designer; a plastic chair with wheels? A hypercar? an econobox? Go for it.
- Car exporter to BeamNG.drive with ability to edit files
- Semi-frequent new updates and features that make car building more realistic and more in-depth
- Advanced campaign mode can be fun sometimes
- Small, but very diligent modding community with tons of choices and features
The Cons:
- Unrealistic values, numbers, and calculations sometimes; eg. 9000hp from a quad turbo V12 (just not how it works)
- Lack of a tutorial for campaign mode; especially since it is the most in-depth and complicated part of the game
- Absence of "tycoon" elements originally in the game
- Updates often break older mods, cars, and engines
- New features often take long times (very small dev team to be fair)
- Takes large amounts of time to learn and understand what different features and options change about the car
- Super time consuming to make realistic designs
- BeamNG exporter has improved, but it still lacks built in features; eg. making steering wheels turn, lighting issues, suspension issues, etc. (all can be fixed manually by file editing, but that's often for only advanced players who know what they're doing)
The Super Cons:
- Basically unplayable on lower-end devices (performance requirements haven't been updated in a while it seems)
- Mods almost required to make designs look life-like
- Tuning almost anything about the car is extremely tedious and often requires adjusting several options at once
- Campaign mode is basically just menus with gibberish upon gibberish of information, numbers, tips, charts, and graphs which when unexplained (oftentimes the case) can make absolutely no sense to players
- Making interiors for cars is pain in the ass, basically always requires mods, and takes waaaaay too long
- Fixtures often don't behave like they should, sometimes not even allowing you to make designs easily possible in real life
- Lack of automotive technology; eg EVs (somewhat supported), hybrids, diesels, rotaries, superchargers & other aspirations (more aspirations coming soon as of Oct. 26, 2024), twin turbos on inline engines, dual exhausts on boxers and inlines (exhausts updates soon as of Oct. 26, 2024), lack of creation of other vehicles; eg. boats, motorcycles, semi trucks, etc., and more major lack of features.
- Lack of technology, car bodies, materials, suspension, etc. past the 2010's (maximum technology year is 2020)
I could go on and list more things like these, but you get the point. Overall I still love this game and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who thinks they're interested, but maybe that's because I've learned to deal with the limitations and lack of features present within the game. If you'd like to recommend anything for me to add to this review, give me constructed criticism, or have any questions or concerns, feel free to reply to this review.
Thank you for reading my rambling,
- Griarsome
Highly recommended, if you're a petrolhead. Obviously, if you just want to make cars easily, this might not be your game. There's a lot of thought to be put into a car, whether it's all maxed out for drag racing or optimized for city usage. One of the greatest early access games I've played.
Cool game, don't like the tycoon and the main interface is really annoying to use.
The car creation and engine creation is really cool but beyond that there isn't really an enjoyable point to playing this game. The discord was also really dissapointing as it was more of a Lgbtq discussion page than a strictly car dedicated page. A page about a car game should talk about engines not about sexual orientation, regardless of what your opinion is.
Okay obviously this is gonna be a hot take, especially considering how many hours I have on this game but here we go.
Automation is my favorite game of all time, it takes everything I love about cars and brings it into a game where I can use my imagination to build whatever I want (unless its supercharged, or diesel, or rotary, or above the year 2020, or prior to the 40's, or hybrid, you get the point...)
However as I watch this game develop I see that this game will never be the amazing do anything fever dream I've been hoping for. In its current state the game is a buggy mess, the ENTIRE point of this game is to be a Tycoon, its in the name Automation The Car Company TYCOON. Obviously that has since expanded to a much cooler selection of things like Car Designer, Engine Designer, Multiplayer (oh wait that's been gone for years!), and Challenges (nope they yoinked those too!). Where am I going with this? Let me explain simply. THE TYCOON IS HORRIBLE, the further you progress the tycoon the laggier it will get I assure you. (Ryzen 5800 and RTX 3060, well above the recommended internals.) How do you expect people with a more "affordable" pc to play this game? The answer is they can't, and the devs don't give a shit that the Tycoon part, the integral point to this game is nearly uncompletable.
I have to ask, what are the devs doing in the meantime rather than fixing a CRITICAL problem with their game? Holding some cheap bullshit contests to promote their furry infested discord server (I'll get to that in a bit here), and arguing with the people who payed them their hard earned 45 schmeckles, as to why they shouldn't have to fix their game or take responsibility for the issues your customers have with the game.
If you don't believe me, all you have to do look at the comments in the Planes Trains and Aidsfest they posted a month or so back (its still top of the list because come figure they took the money and went to jerk off as per usual). They simply refuse to see that the fans are not happy about how they are doing things and make up every excuse as to why they shouldn't. We understand devs, its your passion project and you want to keep it yours and to do that you have to keep a small team of tightly woven people that coordinate well, but you seem to forget that we won't care about this game in 5 years if the updates are as slow and lackluster as they have been for a few years now. Humans don't care about cars like they used to and that's a fact. With each generation there are less people who understand cars to this games degree than the last.
The demand for this games expansion is there, can't you see that? I'd be 10 times happier to donate an extra $45 to this amazing concepts development rather than recommend some buggy trash to my fellow car nerds and hope your asses don't fuck up with it, and all because you think that its going to be better for the long term. Hell consider this a genuine agreement, if the devs put up a go-fund me I'd genuinely donate 100 bucks to it just to help get some extra help to speed up the process and help this amazing concept grow. I'm sure many other long term vets would be happy to donate towards that cause too. If only you'd stop bending them over and fucking them sideways, maybe then they would put on their pants long enough to break out their wallets same goes for me here. In my eyes the devs have officially lost my respect as the creators of this game and have become the vision of its undoing.
Now for THE DISCORD (dear god), may I just state that yes I am very racist, sexist, and homophobic (which gets vented into cars somehow), I hate all races, sexes, and genders (including my own) equally, this is extended from a prejudiced side of view and if you like "annoying wokies" then you can ignore this section cause then you'll fucking love the discord! However I must state that from what I've experienced in life is that most hardcore automotive enthusiasts HATE the exact type of people that are in the discord (and I live in one of the most liberal states so there's no shortage for diversity in the car community around here). WE CARE ABOUT CARS, NOT YOUR SEXUALITY! If you wanna promote your leftist beliefs please make a separate discord and promote that separately. Keep the Automation discord about the game, not what color tail, paws, and ears you wore to the local Harris Waltz rally. I'm honestly shocked to see that the devs had such a big imprint on that community and I applaud you for doing your part to the cause you support, but I'm here to support and celebrate the internal combustion engine, not what belief system you guys want to moderate. Maybe I'm wrong and everyone is happier playing the game than the Pillsbury Pastry Boy is when he's frosting up some hot butt cakes. I guess the comments will tell...
Lastly, I just to finish this off as a summary for the common buyer who stumbled across this game and doesn't want to read my entire rant. The game itself is phenomenal if all you want to do is build the occasional car and not take this game seriously, then on sale its a good scoop. But if you hope to be recognized as veteran at this game and want to become involved with the community as a long term player you are only going to be let down.
Take better care of your long term players devs, and get your shit together so I don't have to.
Love - Mr. Chips Hubby <3
It is the most advanced vehicle building simulator out there if you love simulation you are missing out.. no i was not paid to say this
make a toyota sedan sized engine have 1.8k hp. fun.
I haven't played any of the campaign, I just like Building weird, crazy and most importantly fun cars to fool around with in Beam NG. It is a very entertaining combo if you are into cars!
Game is fantastic for scratching that itch of just making cars or playing simulation type tycoon games. Easily my personal favorite game.
As someone who likes the management and tycoon genres a lot after seeing some gameplay I knew this was right up my alley.
The campaign can be tuned to whatever insane difficulty you want and has quite some strategic choices to make.
The car designer is very in depth and adds even more tweakable stuff to optimise your campaign. You can also export the cars to beamng drive allowing you to drive them yourself.
My current campaign playthrough is focussed on offroad vehicles which I test by driving them off a mountain in beam which is a ton off fun.
If you like cars, this is the game for you. It is VERY easy to work with in my opinion, and it's super fun. What's also great it the ability to export your vehicles into BeamNG.drive. The only downside is that when exported into BeamNG.drive, the crash physics of the car you made won't be great. Other than that, I rate this game a solid 9/10.
The sandbox is awesome, since it allows you to experiment with making each and every car and engine design you can think of! Hopefully as time goes on, more engine options such as inline-2s are added since I'm a fan of small or quirky engines 🙂
The only complaint I could think of is that I wish that the behaviour of cars created in Automation that are exported to BeamNG matches more closely to how they behave in Automation, since I've experienced issues with race-tuned cars flipping in BeamNG even though the steering, downforce and suspension charts showed no such issues in Automation, although I'm unsure whether it's an Automation issue or a BeamNG problem
Wow, this game feels like its been stuck in early access for a long time. Still, for a game that's been around for over a decade now, its a lot of fun if you're into cars. The engine designing and tuning is a little clunky, but it works really none the less. The car design is more clunky, but its very deep. You absolutely can design some very cool rides once you get the hang of the design system. If you have BeamNG, you can even export your creations over and drive them around.
If you like to tinker, play something laid back, and you love cars, this is your game.
It Is an amazing game you get to build your own cars and test them in beamng drive whitch is so much fun
Great game with lots of detail, however following guides on how to build cool stuff (like max horsepower engines) from YouTube is difficult due to the vast changes between versions. Even if you try to replicate setups from older versions, the motor may just blow up. While some options are the same, others are completely different and downgrading versions to replicate guides is a pain, and isn't directly supported by steam.
Good game, the ui sucks and other bothering stuff, mostly when exporting to beamng.
Exept for that the game is 7/10. Not the best and defenetly not woth 30€. I bought it becouse i really love cars and for what i know there is no other car making game, in this style at least + i will never learn blender so this is probobly me best shot at making cool cars for beamng or something else.
I hope the single player campain is good. For i been waiting.
good game, should add more modern stuff including hybrid and electric motors plus bodykits
I like building the cars and engines though I am only just learning how to fully customize body accents.
A very cool simulator. The career mode is quite confusing to me, but designing your own cars and importing them into Beam is a great time!
i make cool engines, copilot and chatgpt say they are great and would beat the market. i build my own car and export it to beamng. i suck at racing and keep screwing myself up. but the fun and joy of having your own car drivable and made from scratch is the best feeling ever!
great game overall, get creative and become the new Delorean. (without the cocaine charges)
Got more interesting once i started doing engineering, regardless a amazing game
This is probably a niche game, but It's my exact kind of niche game. The ability to export your cars to BeamNG is fantastic and that alone makes this game worth the price, but it's fun to play the campaign as well. It would be extremely cool to see this concept built upon in the future. Maybe we could get earlier time periods with sidevalve engines and be able to play past 2020 with some near future tech in the pipeline. Overall, a fantastic game.
you can try to make normal cars and super fast cars but it is really hard to make but that is the thing i like about it and that you can drive the cars in beamngdrive and also you can make a company in the game and sell cars and just have your own company
This game is a must have for anyone who owns Beamng.drive. The controls are easy to pick up but hard to master, and it makes the game give just the right amount of instant gratification and just the right amount of wanting to improve.
Some additions I think would be good:
V-twin, v-four, flat-twin, and straight-8 engines
Diesel and possibly 2 stroke fuel options
Hybrid and electric drivetrain options
Overall great game
I've wanted this game for 7 years for just the engine maker. I feel limited a bit by the selection of engines, and by my skill at designing cars, but this is a must have for gearheads. There's so much depth to the simulations.
If you love BeamNG, but you wish that you could make your own cars, this is the game for you. You can create your own engines and cars, and then you can export them to BeamNG Drive, or just take photos of them. There is also a career mode, of which I have had a strict amount of time playing, but it was still quite good. 9/10. Good work devs, and can't wait to see what's added in future updates.
I wanted to love it... I really did, but... Lets face it, campaign mode is kind of a train wreck. I think my my ex wife was more intuitive, and easier to work with. I don't mind the spreadsheet format, however the tooltips don't really direct you to what you really need. It just plays like it's someones first attempt at a campaign, and ran with it as a placeholder. Maybe in a couple more years...
Love the game, but it would be nice if the option was added to build a diesel engine. A pickup truck is never complete with out a diesel engine.
The realism along with the compatibility with Beamng Drive makes this an easy recommendation.
Love the game. It did take some time getting used to the game, its UI and how everything is done, and working around all the small bugs. Despite my Laptop Barley meeting the minimum requirements, it still runs pretty good, although a SSD im sure would be a great upgrade, and make the load times a lot better. If you like cars or engines, id defiantly recommend playing, even if it takes awhile to get used to the UI and how it all works.
i really like the game mainly for building the engines but when i try to add tags to the engines it keeps adding the tags to other engines and mixing them up
very great game, but i needs alot more updates and more engines for me to play it more
After about a year of being on my wishlist, i finally mustered up the courage to buy this game as waiting for it to leave early access is seemingly taking forever. At this point i have played the game for about 12 hours. I enjoy vehicles, but im not very auto savvy in terms of mechanics. So i spent a good amount of time trying to design an engine that wouldn't blow its self up. The hints provided by the game are useful, but expect to do your fair share of googling in order to learn things like compression ratios and different engine materials and why they would be used. Jumping to car designing, the selection of a base vehicle to start with can be confusing. Its sorted by what year the vehicle bodies were used in and sometimes its hard to tell how many doors those bodies have and such. Also, designing an interior needs work. The game lacks camera angles to allow the proper placement of items inside the vehicle. Once youve designed your car and engine, you have to make your factory. I found this to be especially difficult because its not clear which things you need to include to produce your vehicle and which things are optional add-ons. It would be nice for them to clear this up in the future. After stumbling past that, you get to sell you cars. I went bankrupt and have not been able to make a profitable company yet. But im also still learning the game, im sure ill figure it out.
The Good:
- Graphics. Every vehicle ive made looks fantastic!
- Vehicle sounds
- Dyno data and vehicle generated data
- Photo studio is nice for showing off your vehicle and creating posters that show the vehicle and the performance data
- Mod and Workshop support. There are TONS of useful mods for this and i feel like the developers embrace that. Alot like the devs of other AAA simulators like American Truck Sim, MSFS2020 and Farming Sim. This is excellent!
- The ability to export your vehicle into BeamNG. I dont play BeamNG, but the ability to export a users creation to there is a wonderful feature. A feature that those who do play it will thoroughly enjoy.
The Bad
- Lack of "hints" and tool tips that explain what you need to do. This makes gameplay more of a guessing game than it needs to be.
- Poor attachment wrapping. Its really difficult to make head lights that wrap around the front or rear of the vehicles in order to put the corner light on the side while keeping the headlight on the front. You need to manually place a headlight and then a corner light instead of having them as one unit which really puts a damper on newer style lighting.
The Ugly:
- Terrible Camera angle and control options, ESPECIALLY on the interior. Interior design is already a difficult feat. but the only way to see what you are doing in there is to hide the body of the vehicle. This helps a ton, but when you buy an interior item, you have to switch to the cameras free roam option. Sounds like a solution until you realize the field of view creates a fish eye effect which makes it impossible to line up things like gauges, dash lights and switches since these are mounted based on your visual perception which is never the same when youre in free view. This results in certain things appearing correct until you zoom in , out or move the camera. Then suddenly its not lined up anymore. This creates some frustration that has made me contemplate a refund, not gonna lie.
*This issue could easily be remedied by using a specific camera option for the interior modification and making it so that parts in general spawn up directly in front of the user*
- When youre working on interiors, your parts spawn outside the vehicle and not where you are looking. This needs to be fixed. If im looking to spawn a gauge and im inside of my vehicle and select this, i shouldn't need to go on an easter egg hunt to find my gauge and then have to play twister to get that into the interior. It should spawn where im looking and be ready to be scaled and moved.
Conclusion:
Overall, This game is a great game. If the devs can fix these small issues i mentioned, i think they have easily the best car manufacturing tycoon on steam. Is it worth the current price of $29.99. Meh, thats debatable. Personally, i would've liked to pay about $19.99 for this game given its early access status and limitations. Once its finished, i would gladly pay $39.99 for it. I encourage the developers to reach out to me if they want further input.
You can create very nearly identical cars to existing models from reality and you can export them to Beamng.drive, which if you do modding and you have the 3d models extracted from games saves literally weeks of time per car. That's a very nice extra! BUT
The game sets out to be a tycoon type game for car manufacturing and I'm sorry but at that this is SHOCKINGLY BAD, I honestly don't understand what all the other reviews go on about.
A few examples:
1. You buy a factory by selecting plot size first, which sets the maximum size of factory. In other words you selected too small it cannot be extended ever again AND it cannot be shut down either. You guess wrong ONCE that mistake sticks with you for the next 60 years in the game!!! You dug a hole and it's not big enough, you need to dig a completely new one, because the developers were RETARDED. You also cannot just bury the hole, that was too small or too big, it's now there for eternity, because the developers were RETARDED
2. First car you make is much, much quicker to develop. I made a large, sturdy engine, which I wanted to use for family car, offroader, pickup truck, large sedan, large estate, 3 row SUV people hauler etc. because part commonality, savings etc. I deliberately made the engine factory twice the size I needed for the first car, then developed the second car to use the exact same engine, and HILARITY, the factory producing 12000 engines, 5000 of which were needed for the first model NEEDS RETOOLING !!!LFMAO!!! to keep producing the same, completely unchanged engine they had been producing in surplus quantities. You fucking donkeys for developers!!! I also had the car factory double the size it needed to be so I safely assumed I could produce 2 different cars there. NOPE! You can have inifinite amount of trims for the same chassis with different bodies but again HILARITY, a factory is somehow not capable of producing 2 different cars, regardless that it's double the size, because the developers were RETARDED!
SO again, now you need to build another factory and the first one that you deliberately built too large, will cost you too much to run for producing half the capacity until the rest of the game, because the developers were RETARDED. And then the game crashes, because the developers were RETARDED! Honestly I watched the hour+ long TUTORIAL and besides that played for 30 hours and I've never, NOT ONCE have been able to make it past 10 years in the easiest possible campaign settings, because the game is idiotically badly made, confusing, irrational and plain nonsensical. Best I could achieve was develop a good selling car, chug along for 4-5 years, then you start to get desirability penalty because the car body is aging and then you can either - develop something quickly, so you don't generate losses for long, and then the car is rubbish and it won't sell properly and you go bankrupt - or you develop something decent, in which case it takes 40-50 months and you go bankrupt.
This is other HILARIOUS idiocy from developers - you create a new facelift, which has 20 months of engineering development and 5 months of refurbishing the factory for the new model, then you'd think that as in the normal world, your previous generation car would at the very least keep producing, until it's time to retool the factory (in the real world of course they would keep producing the car that still sells and tool up new lines next to the existing production - but at this point you don't expect such common sense from the developers) and then BAM! reality kicks in, that technically your previous generation car is out of production for 20 months, as soon as engineering starts on a new model. The only option you have is sell pre-produced stock, if you had some. BUT AGAIN HILARIOUSLY that only applies to cars, you produce twice the amount of engines than you need, it doesn't generate stock, because the developers were RETARDED.
SHOCKING, SHOCKING, SHOCKING mistakes in game logic, absolutely unplayable!
The game is good, fun and i get to see how much i can squeeze out of 1l engines but when you have only a small selection of engines to mess around with it becomes boring the game feels empty there is not much in what materials the engine is made out of apart from the small selection of standard procedures. they are all closed deck blocks and no open/semi deck cant choose what sleeves you run what the valves are made of and more. i understand it will be a fuck ton of work to put that all in and i dont expect it to be in the game but one can dream. it would be nice if they added rotory, v4 v2 W engines and more. Over all i recommend this game its good
This game is honestly really fun for both making absolutely ridiculous cars such as a 3.5K HP SUV, and also for making serious/replica cars too. It's never a bad time when I am playing this and streaming it to my friends.
Generally a good game if you want to spend some time tweaking and getting to know it.
One can see there was a lot work put into user experience.
There is a lot of features.
AI can design cars for you.
I never thought I'd be into spreadsheet simulators but the fact that you can actually drive the cars you build makes this game so freaking addictive. Plus the educational value is huge if you're as geeky as I am. I learned so much about how engines and gear ratios and brakes and suspension worked just by playing this game. So after putting a few dozen hours into it, I finally decided to go ahead and purchase my own copy.
The only cons are that the campaign is boring and interiors are extremely difficult to build, especially with the controls you're given. This game REALLY needs VR support. Just imagine how cool it would be to actually be able to assemble the cars with your hands. But I seriously doubt that will ever happen, and it makes me sad. Still worth a purchase for the engine-building aspect alone, though. Plus you can always do what a lot of people do and simply don't design interiors. Just stick to the outside cam in Beam.ng. Problem solved lol :D
Great game for learning cars and how to engineer them! I really do recommend it for people who love making cars!
good game but only when paired with Beamng drive and if you are an engineer or want to be one/studying then 100%would recommend but it does take some getting used to but its no a bad game and the V16 engines you can make are cool (quad turbos)
Its a fun car building game that you can build your own cars on. What makes it even better, is that the game is moddable.
The game offers mind-blowing customisation, allowing you to design every aspect of your vehicles and even export them to BeamNG.drive for realistic testing. Its campaign mode spans several decades, challenging you to adapt to changing market trends and technological advancements. Automation combines creativity, strategy, and realism in a way that no other game does, making it the best game I’ve ever played.
Very good fun and addicting game also the community is very nice. would recommend this game a lot and its very exciting to look at the updates to come
Great add on game for exporting cars you have made and export through files in the game into Beamng.drive to play using your own cars. The suspension shock absorber set up is a little hard to use, but if you make damping low (how fast your shock can compress) (around 80 to 200) the shocks will be a lot less bouncy and make the spring stiffness high (350+ for street cars) your cars will perform great in beamng. its a fun game stand alone and I really do enjoy customizing and building my own cars, its one of the most detailed games I have played with some of the most customizable parts. and I look forward to the next update where we supposedly will be getting superchargers and a whole bunch of other things.
This game is a very well thought out game that continues to recive updates to new and old content that is exciting to mess around with in the sandbox. I also really love the compatabillity with beamng.drive
