Dungeon Munchies is a side-scrolling action RPG with a focus on hunting down creatures, cooking them, and eating dishes to gain certain abilities. The combination of dishes you choose to eat will impact your entire play style.
Features:
Big Menu for a Big Stomach
With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield.
Tools of the Trade
Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can't eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo.
Farm-fresh & Locally-sourced
In this day and age, ingredients are hard to come by. You should be prepared to face off electrical snails, razor-sharp shrimp claws, and laser wasps to get the delicious parts you need.
Something Doesn’t Feel Right...
From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one's really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon?

fun * ^ *)b
An absolutely incredible side scrolling action adventure metroidvania. With a great story, art design, character design, characterization, and world building.
A very fun but a little short game, the voice acting was very good, worth the additional money. Music was sometimes a bit lacking, but otherwise a nice story, very fun gameplay and also quite funny with good characters.
To be honest, I just expected this to be a fun little dungeon crawler with some lighthearted writing and a cooking mechanic. Instead, it wound up being a lot more than that. The combat is far better than I expected, with enormous variety in builds and weapons to choose from as you progress through the game. The enemies provide a consistent increase in difficulty to match the power of your builds, and the boss fights are diverse and excellent, providing a meaningful challenge without feeling overly punishing or easy to game. I loved tinkering with my builds and testing them in the field, trying to stack as many ridiculous buffs as possible to melt face. It was a really fun and rewarding process.
However, the real standout for me was the writing. Based on the trailer, I expected some light, safe, 2000s weeb humor and a feel good story. It did not turn out to just be that. I don't want to spoil anything, but by the end I felt a genuine attachment to the characters, a profound interest in the world they live in, and a desire to watch more episodes of captain DUI.
I don't want to say the game is perfect, because it's not, but it gets far more right than it does wrong, and more than anything it has such a genuine charm & earnestness in how it's delivered that I can't help but forgive the rough spots. If anything you've seen from the trailer interests you, I hope you'll give it a shot.
enjoyable
Really enjoyed the game, mainly for its art and humor, althought the gameplay, with its variety for builds, was fun too, I am not that into platform games. Also, the story was pretty well written.
this game is awesome
Anime ghost chef
The story is great and the dialogue is really funny! It's clear that the developers put passion in this game. Gameplay is okay and kinda buggy, so don't expect much from that part. Controller support is bad, so I recommend playing with a mouse and keyboard for the best experience.
I didn't expect this game to be SO GOOD.
This really isn't my type of game. I've clicked the skip button on these types of games for less.
And no, this isn't going to be a "but I saw the light" type review. It's mixed.
Backstory for those who care to bother: I really only played this because someone on the Super Daryl Deluxe discussion forum said this had the same "vibe." And since SDD made me aware of an itch I never knew I had, and nothing has ever scratched it since, I jumped on the opportunity.
...
I sort of see what they meant. They have the same vibe in that the lore is absolutely nonsensical at times, yet have just barely enough glue to form some sort of logic that makes sense just enough to keep your suspension of disbelief in check. It is good and wide enough that infinite games could be spawned from it. It really is that Super Daryl Deluxe weirdness that I craved. So point to you, Steam user on the SDD forums.
That said, there's a whole game here, so let's see what else we have.
Story
The story gets a lot of praise, and it's pretty good... though some of these reviews make it sound like a masterpiece beyond this world, and it's not. Still, subjective enough that you might think differently. Don't really have much else to say. It's complicated enough that I can't sum it up, and I wouldn't want to, since it's the main motivator for getting through the game if you aren't a big fan of the genre (like me).
Gameplay
It's a 2D action RPG with focus on equipment and perks. These perks, that have take the form of ingested dishes, have synergies that are up to you to find. Enemies drop ingredients for you to make dishes with, and with a single exception I always had enough stuff to make everything with one run through each area.
There are a lot of builds you can go for, I didn't even touch half of it in my 13 hours of play. Near the end you get some absolutely absurd dishes that completely break the game. If you want to beat my DPS score, go ahead and try out your build on a dummy in the camp. 40000 DPS. For some perpective, the second best build I made had 2000 DPS.
Needless to say, the final boss' health bar disappeared in a second, and if it weren't for the scripted events most bosses have, the fight would've been over in less than 4 seconds. Speaking of those scripted events...
Bosses
While not the focus, they are a big part of the game. They usually have around 3 scripted "bullet hell events" that begin when their HP drops below a certain thresholds. The final bullet hell event begin when they have a sliver of health left. Usually this event is the hardest one too, and it is really frustrating to die when you see that 1% health bar and having to do the fight all over again. I think this could've been handled better.
The hardest boss is the second one by the way. Every boss following that is easier. Which leads us into the next thing!
Balance
All over the place. Like I said above, the game breaks in the final few hours (in your favor thankfully), but even up until that point, some bosses are just that much harder than others and the order is all wrong. What I'm trying to say is... don't lose hope when Clifford beats your ass for the fifth time. Nothing came close to him for me, and he's the second boss in the game.
If you get stonewalled, it's a good opportunity to switch up your build. Try something different. There are a lot of builds, and trying them out is cheap.
Jank
This game is full of jank. Sometimes the game eats your second jump. Wall jumping never 'feels' good because you don't stick to walls. You get an ability to swim at full dash speed in every direction but up. If you double click a dish in the menu the eating sound plays twice and you don't actually equip it. The options menu always changes the language to Traditional Chinese because it reads your faintest mouse movements and the language option is selected by default. Growling sounds from the SCP-esque abominations continue to play in the area they died long after their deaths, sometimes through cutscenes.
This is not a comprehensive list, but trust me, there is a lot. You will notice many more not listed here.
Music
A short mention because... most of it is lofi. I love this type of music, but at the same time it's very forgettable (as lofi is).
Just remember to add it to your lofi chill playlist before moving on to another game.
Conclusion
I recommend it to fans of the genre, or if you're in a similar niche situation as me as described in the introducing paragraph.
If you're not a fan of this genre, but want to try your wings at it just to challenge your beliefs or renew your resolve, there are better games out there to give your 2D action-adventure RPG time to.
Fun and easy game didn't take long at all to 100% all achievements story isn't bad either. Nice refreshing game to play and a nice time killer
The middle and the end of the game is too hard to avoid the barrage.
Spoiler!!!!!
If they make a sequel it should be called Space Munchies or something = of the sort lol
Yes
This game is super addicting, great game to play if you like those 2d pixel games like hollow knight for example, amazing if your someone like me who tries to FC every game the achievements are all possible to complete. The game in general is super fun still play it even though finished it 3 times lol but highly recommend playing this game it is worth it trust me.
Moral of the story: Even nepo-babies can positively contribute to society.
Rough, buggy, unpolished, but also incredibly passionate and brilliant. The writing really blooms in the second chapter and I love the tone to death. The gameplay is simple and static but the setting gives you great purpose in walking screen right and slashing the enemies. There may be odd details or poor balance here and there, but this game has a lot of heart that really shines.
This game is a hidden gem! Dungeon Munchies is one of the most entertaining Metroidvanias I've played recently. The story was surprisingly engaging, and the gameplay is incredibly open-ended. You can fight with swords, hammers, bows, guns, magic, shields – you name it!
But the best part? You literally cook and eat your enemies to gain crazy new powers.
The combat is a perfect balance of power and challenge. You can dish out serious damage, but you're not invincible. The bosses are tough and kept me on my toes the whole time. Highly recommend!
An extremely fun game. I recommend it!
What started as a humorous fever dream turned into an unexpected and well-thought tale of emotions and friendship, satirical social commentary, pondering purpose of life, sprinkled with a heavy emphasis on SPC-esque setting with an extradimensional horror on top of it.
I wasn't expecting that, that's for sure. Probably noone expected that either.
The gameplay is good, but definitely not exceptional; though ability to tweak and modify charater 'build' based ob culinary dishes is a very strong side of the game. However the narrative and characters are pure chef's kiss and were a primary focus for me on this crazy journey.
I was not expecting my favorite thing about this game to be the story, all of the characters felt unique and had a lot of personality to them. Really nice enjoyable game with a lot of different weapons, passives, and playstyles to experiment with. Definitely a hidden gem, wish more people experienced and talked about this one.
The story is slow at start but when you go on and push through act 1 it gets really AWESOME.
Bought the game on discount out of curiosity and found an hidden gem.
The game is poorly built with enemies that are too difficult for the power that you are given. In the final fight, there is a bug where if you have failed the first time, the damage is already done when restarting, leading to an infinite loop of failure. This isn't a "git gud" issue, this is a literal bug where you can not physically move your character to an area fast enough to defend it.
Is it a good game? Its ok.
Is it a good experience? Its a great experience.
Mechanically the game is decent, combat is simplistic and the bosses ask you to perform feats of dexterity that the game is simply not able to let you express. (Looking at you, Touhou spell-card boss moves.)
So if you're looking for a mechanically impressive marvel this ain't it.
That said, if you're interested in an engaging, fun, endearing, emotional, interesting, and challenging experience with just the right amount of camp and cliche this one is for you.
I came for the food, and stayed for the characters and food.
I will be waiting very impatiently for more games in the Dungeon Munchies universe.
neat
That's one damn good story!
I always wanted to be a rotting corpse serving a cute necromancer
Beautiful game, phenomenal music, solid character design, amazing story and atmosphere. I would adamantly put this game as one of the best games out there.
just play it to find out
cute game and story
A hidden gem, for sure. Worth every penny.
There are some very minor translation issues, but the general flow of the game, with extremely expansive build options and story that's surprisingly captivating will let you appreciate this game for everything that it is.
Has the boss gameplay of Terrarias Calamity mod, has combat of Starbound, has literal SCP based creatures in it, and the humor is of really good memes. What more is there to love!
Great jokes characters and story. Solid and good combat on normal difficulty. Works great with K&M.
Crazy guns, waifus, and food... what more can you ask for?
Oh... right, forgot to write a review. Had this game installed for years now, yet I never ended up touching the final act. I really should, it's a very solid game, even while I was waiting out Early Access. Mobility is strong, buildcrafting is nuts, and the story keeps you invested. Plus it's funny as all hell, even if some of the comedy pushes into the ultrahorny and simple immaturity territory. I really hope to see more come from these devs, they had a ton of potential.
Funny and cute game with an interesting story. Although the game isn't that long, you'll love the characters and worldbuilding in this game.
