Are you ready for an invertebratey adventure? Do you have the gumption to take on a mighty quest for the good of oodles of squidlits everywhere? If so, many trials await you as you squrp your way to victory in the squishiest of escapades!
The mechanics are simple!
After jumping, jump again to ink downwards on the enemies you encounter as you blip and squip along your merry way! Can you stop Skwit Skwot before it’s too late?
Squidlit does everything it can to be as accurate to Game Boy hardware as possible, including:
- No more than 10 8-pixel wide sprites in a line.
- No more than 40 sprites at any time.
- Four sound channels that are shared between “voices” of music and the sound effects.
- All sounds were made on a real Game Boy (using LSDJ).
- 160 x 144 pixel resolution.
- And a whopping 4 shades of... “grellow”.

a cute little game! what you see is what you get. no complaints.
The game is beautiful and cute af.
BUT I will rate this as negative. Because it has a few flaws that are way too big.
-> No saving (what were the devs thinking)
-> You cant change the resolution, how to play this game in my monitor ?? It's nauseating, needs windowed mode.
-> The camera shouldn't follow pixel for pixel the hero. Even more nauseating combined with the previous flaw.
If these 3 things were fixed, I would change my review.
More games need an option to hug the final boss (for an achievement).
rly cool
Squidlit is a good game with good music! Really encapsulates the original gameboy style and uses the limited buttons in a greaat way! 9/10
Extremely cheap for what it's worth. The game is very cute and funny, the gameplay is simple but that's by design. If you want something more complex then go buy a more complex game that will probably cost way more than this one.
9 out of 10
While the graphics and the animations are really nice, the gameplay just isn't that fun. Also, the game never gave any good challenge and didn't motivate to replay. While I really liked the fight against the book, I can't recommend this game for a single boss fight.
"Squidlit" is a very short and very easy trip to GameBoy-nostalgia-lane with adorably cute and silly overtones.
The Ink-Spray movement/attack lets the camera wiggle around, which can be offputting at times, but I liked the half an hour spent on this little title. Gotta love the walking animation of your invertebrate!
Heck, if you want a challenge, there are achievements for it (speedrunning and never taking a health drop).
And there is a sequel that is prbably worth looking up.
Very short, easy and cute platformer. Will probably run on even the most potato laptops out there. Good sense of humor, simple aesthetics that do their job, straightforward gameplay with no noticeable bugs or issues etc. Reasonably priced everything considered, worth it if this is your kind of deal. I see some bemoaning the lack of save system, but honestly, I think even a platforming newbie could probably complete this in one sitting - in fact if you have kids or family members or even friends that are interested in games but are put off by their difficulty, this is an ideal place to start for platformers. There's also a special achievement for beating it in under 13 mins if that's your deal.
Cheap, quick platform fun.
Okay so... It's actually a bit of fun. Some of the dialogue is actually funny. You can blitz through the game in less than 30 minutes (there's no save system so just go for it). The achievements are fun to go for in a second run. Get this game on sale for cheaper than a McDonald's coffee, or regular price for cheaper than a Starbucks coffee. Why am I comparing this to coffee prices...
Short, but fun platformer. As a 90s kid, I love Game Boy games, but a huge flaw WAS the green screen on the original. We were super happy for the monochrome release, and of course later, the color varieties.
I'm not entirely convinced it is THAT great of a game, and even more so one that makes any sense on a PC. If I had this game on handheld or my Nintendo Switch, that would feel more...right. Completely subjective opinion, of course. Squidlit is cheap though. Even more so when it's on sale, but given the game's run-time of about 40 minutes, I'd say it is fair.
If I could rate it neutral I would, but since I can't and I don't feel that keen on it - I'll have to suggest skipping on this one. That said, if you catch it for under $1, then give it a shot...maybe.
An alright yet small platformer, the game isn't too long nor is it overly difficult but doing the game hitless makes for an exciting challenge, however the speedrun achievements are terribly annoying, im fairly certain it becomes impossible to get sub 10 after something like 7 hits due to the time they'd waste, its overly strict and tight for the time so if you're going for 100% on this i'd say look elsewhere, but for a casual experience its a good bitesize game with some cutesy and funny humour.
Psychological intro
I don't recommend the game, but since it is very inexpensive, you can try it for yourself and not be out a lot of money, so this review might not be necessary, but I'm writing it anyway because I have lots of thoughts that I don't see reflected in the first reviews I see on this first Store Page of Squidlit, although I haven't read every review, which would require a lot of time.
Cons
- The vertical scrolling is very choppy as the screen stays centered on Squidlit, and since the resolution is very low, you lose sight of your enemies as well. You will get used to it, but once you exit the game and return to looking at other things, you will feel like your eyes had a workout, and not in a good way.
- Jumping and inking are the same button. This just feels off, in that it defies all muscle-memory and gamer-logic you might have accumulated over the years. Of course, you can customize your controls outside of the game, but there are no options within the game.
Pros
- Very cute; it puts Kirby to shame in the cuteness-department.
- There is gameplay-variety beyond just platforming and killing. I was pleasantly surprised.
[*]The music is pretty good. The sound-effects convey different things to the player intuitively.
The game is very short. Once you get the basics down and get to know the levels you can beat it within minutes. So don't expect a long game. But what you do get is a very charming experience with responsive controls. Recommended, but know that what you get is short but sweet.
It's the sweetest game I've ever played, very creative, bosses are very different from each other. Dialogues are also very funny. This is a game where you smile as you play, I recommend.
This game is desperately in need of filter options like Downwell, but overall I really enjoyed myself. Get it on sale for a good 40~ minutes of fun. I'm gonna try and get all the achievements and really get my moneys worth
Squidlit is a fun little platformer that tries to be an exact replication of a Gameboy platformer. It was released on the 2nd of March 2018. One playthrough takes about 38 minutes.
You play as a squidlit, a squid like creature (according to the game. To me a squidlit looks like an octopus) that is send on a quest to save the land. Why you? Because the stronger and better equipped squidlits need to protect the town. And that is it for story. There is a villain, a plot to destroy stuff and stuff like that. Nothing new or unique, just the minimum stuff to make a story.
Gameplay is simple. Five buttons and that is it. Left and right to well, walk left and right. Down to do a ducking animation without actually ducking. Up to go through doors and jump. Pressing jump once, jumps. Duh. Pressing jump while in the air does a sort of half jump that doesn’t add hight but it does add distance. Your squidlit also squirts ink when jumping mid air. Combat involves jumping over an enemy and squirting them with ink. That’s it. Some enemies can’t be squirted but most require just one squirt to finish. The difficulty is on the low side. I only died once during the final boss because I went onto it with low health.
Most enemies are based on aquatic creatures changed into land dwellers. The Sharkapiller is by far one of the scariest enemies I have ever come across in a game. Not in the game but the idea of the enemy. Sharkapillers are shark sized caterpillars that eventually turns into sharkaflies via cocoons. And seeing a shark sized and shaped cocoons in a tree is terrifying.
I never had a gameboy so I can’t say how accurate the graphics is but from what I know about the Gameboy, it looks spot on. There is just green and black in terms of color. You can change the contrast, which is nice, since the default setting was a bit unclear. The sounds are basic chiptuney stuff.
Squidlit was very enjoyable at the end of the day. Sure, it’s short and only has one gimmick (the Gameboy thing) but the controls are solid, the levels are nice enough and at full price Squidlit is 1$. So, give it a try.
Good small platformer with gameboy graphics, cheap too. Easy to finish but has some tough -or even impossible- achievements if you want to reach 100%. You have to play it through the end as it has no saves, but has checkpoints for the current playthrough. My only objection is the annoying music which does not turn off or down.
Verdict: Very good (8/10)
Nosh on some Gameboy goodness.
Squidlit is a short, Gameboy-style platforming adventure game developed by Squidlit Ink. In Squidlit, you play as a squidlit on a quest to journey to the local castle and stop the evil Skwit Skwot (GOD EMPEROR) from whatever evil things it is that he has planned. I picked this up on a whim since it’s so cheap and I ended up really enjoying it, it keeps things simple, but it’s all well-executed
Positives:
- Great Gameboy style art, everything is clear while keeping to the “whopping 4 shades of... “grellow”” Usually this kind of style makes me feel a bit ill, but I had no problems with Squidlit.
- Simple but enjoyable platforming gameplay. You can jump and then jump again to shoot down ink which you use to attack the bad guys.
- Well written characters and a decent story. It’s pretty lighthearted and I found it quite amusing.
- Some decent, albeit fairly straightforward boss fights. The first one is pretty basic but the second and third boss fights both have a kind of unique gimmick to them that makes them a little more interesting.
- It’s short and priced well for the amount of content. Doesn’t overstay its welcome.
- It definitely captures the feel of a Gameboy game and made me feel nostalgic even as someone who was mainly a GBA SP player. But it doesn’t rely on this nostalgia to be good, it stands on its own and I think it’d be enjoyable even if you’ve never touched a Gameboy.
Negatives:
- [*]There’s no save system. It’s short enough that it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone to complete it in under an hour, but not having a save system is still pretty inconvenient if you need to leave all of a sudden and end up losing all your progress.
Verdict:
Squidlit is a lovely little Gameboy-style game that feels authentic. It’s a fun little romp as a cephalopod with well done gameplay, good writing and decent boss fights. It’s pretty cheap, so I’d certainly recommend it at full price, especially if you liked Gameboys.

A nice homage to the original Gameboy, including green screen graphics and controls (d-pad, select, start, b, and a.) The game has good graphics, music, and sound effects. The boss battles are fun and different every time. You also have to go on quests as you play. The game is short, I beat it in under an hour. I would recommend buying it if you're looking for something cheap and original.
I've only played 5 minutes of Squidlit because somehow it's too hard on my eyes, being blown up on a 23 inch monitor. The camera is always focused on you, so whenever you jump, the whole world moves essentially, when is super jarring to my eyes.
I really like this game, and for that reason I'll recommend it, but it's not meant to be played on a "big" monitor, especially not while sitting close to it. So aside from the first 5 minutes of the game, I can't really judge its content.
Update: played it on Nintendo Switch recently, and yep, there it worked much better for my eyes :) It's a short, but fun little throwback to the GameBoy days.
I watched Jim Sterling trying Squidlit out, and immediately put it on my wishlist afterwards. I finally got around to buying it during this most recent Summer sale, and what I found was a charming little game that was completely on point as it pertained to crafting a fun adventure, GameBoy style. It really is exactly as advertised. About 45 minutes of good old fashioned video game fun. Anyway, there is actually a story as well, and it is perfectly in keeping with the overall whimsical nature of the game. The platforming itself was tight and seamless. I actually can't really find any flaws with this game whatsoever. It is maybe the best example of having an idea and seeing that idea through to its full potential.
I think I'm gonna give Squidlit a straight 10 drops of squid ink mucking up the place out of 10 possible.

What an utterly charming little game. Not very deep, not very long, but fun as hell. A great throwback to the old school platformers of the day. The graphics are spot on, the music is good - if you dig Kerby and the like, you'll love this. And the prfice is right, too! Thanks Jim for sending this my way!
Such a cute little game! Retro Gameboy themed game about a 'squid' (Looks like an octopus <.<). It's very simplistic (like the old games) but enjoyable.
Pros:
- Nostalgia gameboy feeling
- Simple to play
- Music / Sound effects are great!
- Cute and humorous
- Cheap
Negatives:
- No save system. <.< Played for about 20 minutes to get a feel and escaped to desktop.. went back in and had to start from the beginning again. This can be forgiven, as even some games from the 90's didn't have save systems either. This is one of those sorts of games meant to be played in one sitting.
-Tacking onto the above.. It's short! Taking your time to read dialogue and find the hidden squids, will probably put you at 45mins - 1 Hour or so. Rushing, maybe 20 minutes or so.
- The gameboy theme of green on green is a bit hard on the eyes.
Would recommend for those that enjoy classic GB games. :)
