The nightmare levels are several minutes long and do not have checkpoints. Some of them have extremely finicky sections near the end. This leads to hours and hours of playing the same boring level just to get the occasional attempt at the part that is actually difficult. Do not do this to yourself.
Superb music. Hypnotic. Challenging game. Requires focus. I forget the stress with this game.
I give it a 8/10. Black theme objects can be repetitive.
I kinda liked this for the first few hours, but:
- Awful hitboxes at times. You get killed by stuff that's not even near you. Especially noticeable with things flying by, or hitting you before visually reaching you.
-. Lots and lots of cheap kills by stuff that quickly jumps in your face. These can only be countered by memorization, since your character literally cannot switch direction quickly enough. I don't appreciate being faulted for simply not having retried enough times.
- Drum'n'bass bores me, but to each their own.
There are many things I did appreciate though:
- the 3-2-1 countdown you get when unpausing is welcome
- nice visuals
- the way the action is synched up with the music is pretty good
- the multiple ways to ace a level
- the unlockable skins
Prepare to die a lot.
I hated this game to be honest. Only reason I kept playing was for a couple achievements to save my stats just a bit.
The physics are odd and you get punished for using the one control you have in the whole game by losing points.
There is no way to predict how high/low the eye will go with a short push on the control since the screen will suddenly tilt out of nowhere. Then you can just sit back and watch youself crash into a wall - Wonderful, sigh.
Very luck based and frustrating!
Silly people writes silly reviews.
This game is colorful, has nice art and concept, weird physics and good casual playability.
Get it if you want to play casually in short bursts. This one is perfect for that!.
I loved (and bought just for) the fact that it works perfectly on GNU/Linux
Fedora 28, i7 7700K, 16GB RAM, Nitro+ RX 580
For it's price it's a pretty great game with very challenging levels and it's fair share of replay value, even if it gets frustrating at times. Oh, and the music is fantastic.
Game's hella fun, except for the part where i break my mouse.
11/10
So cooool gameeeeee!
I played for the first time in Reboot Develop in croatia and I liked it a lot. I have to say the tutorial is a bit weird when you play for the first time but you get used to the controls and the rhythm quite fast
My favourite thing till now is the first boss fight in stage 6! Its so awesomeeeeeee. I want more! Lets see the next levels :)
It's a great little game, atmospheric, nice visuals and music. The difficulty is balanced well.
Make sure you listed to the music, the beat helps you out, tells you what rhythm of clicking you should use.
Very nice package, and for very cheap.
A great runner-type of game with an excellent presentation, tight controls, and awesome music. What i can say about this game that makes it different from the others of his genre, is that the levels are very narrative. I mean, you dont play this kind of games for his argument, but the levels evolve in some great narrative ways, like if they were telling you a story, and this accompanied by the execellent music, makes the progression through them very intense and epic. Its a weird feeling considering the genre it belongs but its truely what i feel and i think this is amazing.
The game consists on 15 levels ( boss fights included ) in which you can complete three extra challengues: collecting all the orbs, reach the highest score, and unlock some secrets. If you do this, you unlock a skin for the character ( they are awesome! ), and what is most important, a nightmare version of the level... you know, no checkpoints, the same level but way harder, and definetely the best experience you can get from this game.
Highly recommended if you like this genre.
This game if f....n awesome. I love what they do with the music, at times it feels like you are in an interactive audio visualizer. You die a lot in this game, but you are thrown right back in, and when you finally manage to cross that crazy section that seemed impossible, it feels great. In some ways, it's like A Crow in Hell on steroids (it's a flash game where you also have to navigate narrow corridors and avoid all kinds of contraptions, but the mechanics is a bit different). I like this game more, though.
Hello, I really like this game. It's really fun, I like the graphics and the music fits in nicely, also the cinematics are cool. I recommend this game :3
I worked on the prototype of this game for a short while few years ago, and I am absolutely stunned how much the game has progressed since then. Love the attention to detail on each level the team has put, and the quality of each song. Absolutely recommended for the great audio+visual gaming experience.
Very good game, well made, its the small details that make the game very good (under water muffled noise). Enjoying it very much so far
Flappy Bird styled gameplay with centipedes and Drum and Bass.
Oh boy, what a potential mix for epic failure. But there's none to be found. Instead the devs put a LOT of care into the idea and created a stellar execution. This seems to be the first title from Dark-1, so extra credits!
Odium is an audio-visual experience that's very trippy, but you get that from the screen/vids alone.
What you don't see from the videos is that the gameplay and the button presses you make are pretty much in complete sync to the music. When done correctly, it's easier to get the orbs and dodge obstacles.
Due to the drum and bass tempo it's a very fast game. There's leeway in the first few levels but at 10+ there's so much obstacles turning only visible in close proximity that you can't really dodge by reaction alone. The key is to have faith in the beat and get the right angle to flow through the tight obstacle course.
The music and different breaks in speed work really well in the game and it's fun to see when your little eye moves very slowly to slow parts and quickly accelerates when the music gets going. The level design gets an interesting pacing with this and can lead to dramatic chase sequences. Really well done, there's a lot of creativity to be found.
The downside to the high tempo, it's very hard and exhausting. I think I died 90 times at level 10. So be prepared for a challenge! (Thanks for the 100 death achievment! I think I won't have problems on the 1k death if it exists)
The visual noise is sometimes a little excessive, making parts harder than they should be. Having played the BIT.TRIP series a lot I'm used to these things and kind of filter it out after a while but if that's not your thing the later levels could be less enjoyable for you.
Pros:
* Amazing art, design and presentation.
* Very well thought out boss design that fits perfectly in the one button gameplay who is already fluid enough.
* The music has very interesting sound cues that is complementing the flow of the game (in the likes of Thumper).
* The cut-scenes have amazing atmosphere.
In Between:
* I think some checkpoints could be reworked, in this kind of fast-retry gameplay there are some stage checkpoints that are just too long in between and can put a strain on your concentration pretty fast. The challenge that comes with this could be approached differently.
* Even though the game itself and the cutscenes in between stages are great I feel like there is a discrepancy between them, in terms of presentation tone. The game feels like a light cartoonish journey while the cut scenes have pretty dark approach to them.
* The gameplay camera turn can turn off some people.
Cons:
* The music need a lot more variance, there so much focus on the drums (especially in the first stages) where they cover the back layers of the score. This may be due to the final mix. Moreover the ear fatigue that comes with it may just make you turn off the sound and continue like that which would be a shame because in general the game is well thought out with it.
* The loudness is not consistent throughout the game.
* The secret collectable should persist after death.
I recommend this game to anyone who likes self driving rhythm games. And I would suggest to play it on PC! This may feel like a mobile game but that platform won't do it justice properly hence you will miss out on the amazing details it has to offer.
Been following the development of this game since Dark-1 presented the game on the globalgamejam few years ago, its really a different game since then in a positive way. I just bought it and have only 20 minutes in the game, but for now I think it is a really interesting concept - gameplay wise, awesome soundtrack (they should sell as separate dlc/ost caz its really good), great art and animation. It's really hard, but challenging, it reminds me of super meat boy in that way.
You should definitely try it out!
(I might update this review when I pump up the play time numbers )
Fun, challenging and great looking game. Some levels are crazy, but the more you die the harder you try.
I played board games with the game devs last week and promised them I would support their first Steam game and buy it. I wasn't about to back down on that promise.
The game itself is decent, though. Just read the description and you know pretty much everything there is to know about its "smartphone-inspired" gameplay. If you play games in short spells, you got nothing to lose, plus the price is difficult to beat given the content you'll be getting.
The music is also cool and worth a mention. Oh, and if you tend to get dizzy easily, you might want to think twice before playing Odium, as things tend to get fast, spinny and flashy a lot.
