must sacrifice for Kali
Keep wanting to like this game but it makes me do the tutorial every time I play it and I'm honestly just done doing that. No more playing this game.
Bery fun game. You can easily play it over and over again. Able to play with up to 3 friends which is amazing. Both adventure and PvP and PvE so more pluses.
This game is HARD, but rewarding.
very fun but very difficult
Cute and Hardcore these games are glorious
Lots of equipment, bosses and secrets to find... if you make it that far
Some runs boil down to luck
Co-op throw ya mate onto some spikes
Really hard but really addicting.
I have never sworn and shouted so much at a game. Love it.
makes me very sad when i die, 10/10
Great game, just keep in mind it doesn't have Steam cloud.
god i wish this were real
Spelunky is an absolute gem of a roguelike, combining tight platforming, brutal difficulty, and endless replayability into an experience that never gets old. The randomly generated levels ensure that no two runs are ever the same, keeping each playthrough fresh and unpredictable. The variety of tile sets adds a sense of adventure, making every descent into the caves, jungles, and temples feel like an entirely new challenge.
The difficulty is steep, but that’s part of what makes Spelunky so rewarding. Every mistake is a learning experience, and every victory feels well-earned. The game demands precision, patience, and strategic thinking, turning even the smallest progress into a thrill.
The music and sound design perfectly complement the gameplay, with catchy tunes that shift dynamically between calm exploration and high-stakes escape sequences. And when it comes to replayability, Spelunky is nearly unmatched—there’s always a new way to approach the caves, a new secret to uncover, or another challenge to conquer.
Gameplay: 9.5/10 – Tight controls, deep mechanics, and rewarding difficulty.
Graphics: 7.5/10 – Simple but charming visuals that prioritize clarity and function.
Sound/Music: 8.5/10 – Atmospheric and fitting, enhancing the tension and adventure.
Replayability: 10/10 – Infinite variety with randomized levels and tons of secrets.
Overall: 9/10 – A near-perfect roguelike experience that rewards skill, patience, and perseverance.
Spelunky
simple but secretly difficult and hair-pulling experience
best gam ever
unforgiving, but feels really rewarding to master
play if u like to suffer. shout out to billyschmidht for carrying olmec
1. the game crashed before I could even get to the tutorial
2. exiting the game causes my monitor to get an Out Of Range error which is an absolute first in all my years of playing games. it makes my monitor unusable until restarting my PC.
conclusion: a game this simple shouldn't even be capable of being this utterly broken.
if you're a roguelike-liker and don't happen to have any technical issues, it might be a fun game, so make sure you test the game within that 2 week refund period just in case.
this game is infuriating
Simply excellent
i spawned in and immediately died to an explosion that had nothing to do with me. spelunky
So fun but ragequit everytime to some bs.
The ghost gave me nightmares back when I played on Xbox 360
Best Hardest Game Ever!
Probably the funniest multiplayer ever made and I'm not even exaggerating.
this game has genuinely been a part of my life for over a decade, i used to play it on xbox 360, and now i play it whenever im bored, or feeling down, etc. genuinely an endlessly repayable gem, i recommend.
UNDER RATED
Spelunky is a very fun game to just pick up and get a few rounds in. The constantly changing map always guarantees a unique experience. This game is hard, but it's not ridiculous and you can easily get better. It's a great game to play with others as well, as the controls and concept are very simple. There's not a whole lot to it, but it is a great way to pass 15 or 20 minutes here and there. 8/10
game where you slave enime with whip
This game is just the midway point of Groundhog where Bill Murray has a suicide montage.
Spelunky is more than a game—it's a masterclass in learning through failure. This rogue-like platformer distills every choice into a moment of growth, a cascade of tiny lessons that, when compounded, transform you from a hesitant explorer into a confident spelunker.
Each run in Spelunky begins the same way: you, a lone adventurer, descending into a cavern teeming with treasures and traps. But what unfolds is never predictable. One moment you’re basking in the glow of a hard-earned fortune, the next you’re flattened by a boulder because you dared to grab a golden idol. And yet, this unpredictability isn’t punishment—it’s preparation.
In life and in Spelunky, progress often feels invisible. Success is less about monumental leaps and more about subtle, consistent adjustments. Every mistimed jump, every encounter with an overzealous shopkeeper teaches you something new. You begin to recognize patterns, anticipate threats, and master the art of adapting to chaos.
Spelunky’s brilliance lies in its balance. Yes, it is brutally hard, but it is never unfair. Every mistake is an opportunity to refine your approach. Did you forget to check for traps? That arrow to the face is a gentle (albeit painful) reminder. Did greed cloud your judgment? The game’s indifferent cruelty nudges you toward humility.
But here’s where the game truly shines: the joy isn’t just in overcoming obstacles, but in how it reshapes your mindset. Spelunky encourages you to embrace failure as a natural and necessary step toward mastery. It’s not about avoiding mistakes—it’s about learning to recover from them with a little more wisdom each time.
For those willing to persist, Spelunky offers more than entertainment; it offers transformation. It’s a playground for honing patience, adaptability, and grit. And when you finally conquer its depths, the reward isn’t just a virtual crown—it’s the quiet realization that you’ve built a skillset that extends far beyond the screen.
So, would I recommend Spelunky? Absolutely. But only if you’re ready to embrace its unique brand of tough love. This game doesn’t just test your reflexes; it rewires your thinking. And in doing so, it leaves you not just a better player, but a more resilient person.
Really easy... compared to Spelunky 2 👀.
good game.
This game destroyed my will to live more times than I care to remember.
10/10
Started playing the Spelunky series in 2010 and have spent more time on it than all other video games combined (or thereabout). HD seems to me the most balanced of the three. Classic is retro hard and I wish I would enjoy 2 as the crowning achievement that it is, but my heart (and brainstem) is with this one.
top 3 roguelite of all time
I fucking hate this game
Most fun torture method ever! Been trying to get the golden key to the temple for half my play time. Kill me.
runs are lost randomly and/or because of a single mistake
late floors are just completely filled with insta kill traps
chilling in jungle? off-screen tribal man shoots his boomerang and chains three hits on you
miss a ledge in ice caves? you fall to your death
sometimes you just get unlucky and a tiki trap surrounds the exit. if this happens and you can't bomb the exit YOU ARE SCREWED
i can't imagine failing a 30 minute run because of ONE MISTAKE or even NO MISTAKE AT ALL
this game is unplayable without shortcuts, and with them, runs are meaningless
health might as well be nonexistant cause late floors just kill you instantly
patience is not rewarded, it is punished.
i remember giving up on this game a couple years ago, and man i shouldn't have picked this back up
not fun do not buy
can't imagine the second game is any different
very spelunky and hard yup thats it
Too hard game. No instructions how to dodge arrows, how to save princess, what to do with a golden key or a golden statue (or that you get killed when taking the statue), how to escape the ghost (yeah! what ghost?!) and also you start from 1-1, even if you were in 1-3 but got killed.
Very addictive platformer. Random level generation makes each run a new experience.
I like it, in a sort of stockholm syndrome kinda way.
Cute 2D jump and run game.
The further you get into this game, the more you find.
High replay value and still very good for its age.
For 15 bucks okay, for 2 a no brainer.
10/10
Love this game. It's the perfect game for people with a short concentrations span who like roguelikes like me. What seems challenging at first soon gets easy, and then you can make it on to new challenges. It's the sort of game that I'll probably play for years.
Spelunky, also known as "Spelunky HD", due to it being a reimagining of a 2009 game by the same name, now commonly reffered to as "Spelunky Classic", is a game by indie darling and design mastermind Derek "Fuck" Yu. That nickname is not one he thought up, it's just what many fans of this game, its 2009 classic variant, and the surprise 2020 sequel "Spelunky 2" are likely to mutter under their breaths after their 50th run in a row ends with them being "spelunked". This phrase, which does not, in fact, refer to cave exploration, is a euphemistic name given to the act of getting pummeled by Spelunky's high difficulty and sheer insanity.
These depths your spelunker (of which there are several to unlock) treads are brutal and unwelcoming, few friendly faces are to be found here and those that are, are just as likely to find any excuse to run at you at Mach 10 speeds, like your average Cyberpunk 2077 crack addict with a Sandevistan, riddling your face with Shotgun pellet impact holes in the process. Sometimes, your deaths and the predicaments you find yourself in will be less than fair, but Spelunky HD's runs are mercifully short enough to not let the impact sting for too long (unless you're doing one of Spelunky's infamously gruelling achievements, of which I've done every single one (yes, I do need mental help, thanks for asking <3).
Spelunky is a merciless piece of art, a classic man vs. environment silent narrative, like Indiana Jones, if Indy were a big-nosed mute, who had an insatiable enough masochistic desire to make the average user of Twitter cower in fear. Your protagonist (and yourself, by proxy) constantly subject yourselves to unforgiving, procedurally generated tests of ingenuity, game knowledge and platforming endurance, in this way, Spelunky is a fantastic game. Some buggyness here or there on higher refresh rate monitors, the lack of steam cloud intergration, some annoying, RNG-filled achievements, somewhat annoying character unlock conditions and frequently strange stomp mechanic behavior when compared to Spelunky 2 can only mar the ingenuity on display so much.
I was surprised to find that I hadn't ever written a review for Spelunky HD, but perhaps I had felt it redundant before. If you want, feel free to check out my Spelunky 2 review here.
Many Thanks To Mossmouth And Derek Yu For The Laughs, Stockholm Syndrome & The Therapy Bills That I Will Now Have To Fund Through Selling My Body <3
it was worth it buying this horrible and amazing game
i got jumpscared by my character being exploded out of nowhere as i was looking down in the ice caves, it must've been an ufo, or the wind
This game is challenging, and after 300+ hours attempting to beat it, I've been pushed to both fits of rage and euphoria. I can confidently say at this point that it's well made and I enjoy it greatly, however, I can also say that it's not for everyone. What's appealing about this game is how unyielding it is, as all of your failures can be traced back to the measure of your own skill. To players like myself, this is a challenge well worth enduring; to others, not so much.
When considering playing this game, use your best judgement, are you up for the challenge?
