This is one of my all-time favorite video games. It's brutally challenging in the best way, and beating each new world feels like a massive accomplishment. Even the occasional unfair deaths are usually more funny than frustrating. The levels are a near perfect balance between scripted and procedurally-generated, so every run feels fresh and exciting without being so random as to be unenjoyable. If you want to play a game that feels like going on an adventure, I cannot recommend Spelunky more highly.
My one big gripe is that the co-op has major camera issues, so I would really only suggest the game if you're interested in the single-player mode.
10/10 classic roguelike platforming classic. Loved and will always love
Right, so you've decided to play this absolute death trap masquerading as a video game. Let me tell you something - this isn't a game, it's a bloody psychological experiment designed to make you question your life choices and sanity.
Picture this: You're wandering through these gorgeous caves, feeling like Indiana Jones's less talented cousin, picking up shiny trinkets like some magpie with a PlayStation. "Ooh, look at me!" you think, "I'm collecting treasure!" Then BAM! The universe decides to punch you in the metaphorical nuts.
You grab a golden idol - because of course you do - and suddenly the entire cave system goes into full-on apocalypse mode. A boulder the size of Eric Cartmans's ego comes hurtling towards you, and you're doing this pathetic little dance of survival. "Lucky jump!" you might think. But no. This game doesn't do luck. This game does BRUTAL.
One moment you're feeling like a hero, the next you're being yeeted into oblivion by a spider that's apparently been training with SAS. Then a shopkeeper - who seems to have consumed approximately 17 espressos and is having a complete mental breakdown - starts firing a shotgun like he's auditioning for a Michael Bay film.
And just when you think, "Well, this can't get worse," the game says, "Hold my beer" and launches an arrow directly into your face. Not to the side, not near your face - Directly. In. Your. Face.
The genius - and I use that term with maximum sarcasm - is that everything is your fault. That boulder? Your fault. The spiders? Your fault. The maniac shopkeeper? Yep, you guessed it - Your. Bloody. Fault.
It's like the game designers sat in a room and thought, "How can we make players feel simultaneously incompetent, frustrated, and weirdly addicted?" And by God, they've succeeded.
This game is an existential crisis with pixel graphics. A middle finger to the concept of fair play. A testament to the fact that in this digital world, you are nothing more than a puppet whose strings are controlled by a sadistic game designer who probably laughs while drinking chamomile tea.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. But only if you enjoy having your self-esteem ground into a fine powder and blown into the wind of digital humiliation.
Would rage quit again.
*But not for me. (not sure when time is displayed as so long, or why I didn't even have the tutorial achievement before now, I know I done that previously and more I think)
I bought this at a time when I was still finding the difference between rogue likes and rogue lites, this is more the former and I've since discovered I prefer the later.
That said this is a solid game, can easily see why so many like it so much, mechanically sound, if you die as sneaky as this game can be, it is typically your fault through lack of knowledge or just simply your own input mistakes.
Works great on Steam deck, seemingly just as responsive as you need it to be. though if some expert of this game says otherwise I'd listen to them.
Though I do query why whipping a dude-sel knocks them out, surely it should grant health.
not supporting online multiplayer is a ridiculous choice
How to Die while Exploring a Cave Simulator
This game sucks.
Is your life lacking excitement?
Tired of the boring routines?
Does the idea of dying to the same silly mistakes sound entertaining to you?
Then play this sadistic game made by the devil himself.
good game
I punched my controller and cursed a lot, but I love it so much.
I still remember 100%ing the game on my PS3 years ago. Good times :)
very fun
Even though this is a more developed version (to the dev's vision) with more content and improved visuals, I honestly find the free version infinitely more enjoyable and replayable than this one.
One of the best rouguelike games I've played. I've got 40+ hours played and still haven't beaten it, but the gameplay loop is so fun that I still keep returning. There's a sequel, but I don't think I've exhausted this one yet.
Invincible death-ghost in the first room? Really?
Has it really been a decade? Spelunky has been so thoroughly mastered over the years, it's easy to forget just how polished an experience it is. Doing the daily run is still fun, and you can still fall victim to getting Spelunk'd if you're not paying attention.
I maintain that it's a better overall game than the sequel, even if the skill ceiling is higher on the latter. Spelunky has just enough moving parts to feel fun and manageable, while the second game feels a bit overstuffed.
very challenging, but very addicting! If you can handle dying in the stupidest ways, then I highly recommend.
not quite as hard as hunie pop 2 but hard enough to be some malarkey fr
its fun with friends
7/10 good game, I'm only disapointed it's not a mining game...
old but gold
jebidah kerman would be proud of this game if he wasnt dead

Pros fantastic rogue like with randomly generated levels so each playthrough will be different
and each full run usually lasts 30 minutes so if you die you wont waste much time and has a nice multiplayer mode
Cons
no online play and can be really hard for beginners overall i recommend this to any rogue like or platforming game fans
it can be really
Nerds
The greatest game of all time
solid buy
Ahh the wonderful memories! Spelunky is a gem. It’s the perfect blend of exploration, strategy, and platforming that makes it super addictive. Irritating with a blend of joy! Highly recommend!
"Very rage inducing" would shoot the shop keeper in the face again
10/10
Helps me forget my ex-wife
BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED
Muito bom, o melhor plataforma que eu joguei
Extremely addictive gameplay and I've only ever seen the first few levels
10/10
great game
Spelunky is a game all about making mistakes, and learning from your mistakes.
There are a lot of things which one-hit-kill you. In any other game, this would be Suck and Shit, but Spelunky is never unfair. Maybe the first time you encounter a trap it feels unfair (How did I know this rock with an eye would suddenly start moving and crush me?!), but once you learn how it works, you start thinking and learning and experimenting ways to work around it.
And it's beautiful.
Once you learn how the game works, it's possible to beat the whole thing, from start to finish, without getting hurt. It's all about applying what you've learned. It's beautiful. I want to give this game a smooch and a toasted peanut jelly sandwich
worth the carpal tunnel
ass (too hard)
good fun... though its a steep learning curve at the start... lots of ways to die
Spelunky is a gem. It’s the perfect blend of exploration, strategy, and platforming that makes it super addictive. Each run feels unique thanks to the randomly generated levels, which keeps it fresh and challenging. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you lose everything to an unexpected trap, but that just motivates you to get better. The controls are precise, the retro visual style is charming, and discovering the game’s secrets is so rewarding. Definitely one of those games that can keep you hooked for hours without realizing it.
U have to get used to it and should not get rushed by time...but the ghost
Straight up one of the best roguelikes of all time. I first played it on Xbox Live Arcade when I was younger, and loved it with all my heart. Every single run is so radically different from each other that it makes this game endlessly replayable. It's not an easy game either, which just adds to the enjoyment and is pretty simple. Just an incredible title that deserves so much more respect and attention.
i cant believe it... they removed it from xbox. so here i am now.
Brilliant Game. Expertly designed. Feels good to play. The only problem being the generation algorithm. Sometimes it may generate too many traps and enemies which may be very difficult to tackle, so the algorithm needs a refinement. Other than that had a blast playing it. Now onto Spelunky 2!!!
Mastery of this game feels spiritual in nature.
Its a classic. Even though Spelunky 2 is a straight improvement, this is still worth checking out.
Quite spectacular. Enlightening at times. Spelunk alone or spelunk with friends, embark on a magical journey through computer-generated caves filled with wonderful--yet TERRIFYING--creatures such as snakes, spiders, and women.
too hard for me, but that's a me problem - the game is amazing
Best and simplest Rougelite.
Good video game
