Very hard but very satisfying when you figure everything out and get good at the game.
I guess it's a perfect game.
Don't save helping hand
Don't buy helping help
Don't give items to helping hand
goat
So much better than its bloated sequel.
An objectively miserable experience.
This game has been a blast to play, even though extremely frustrating at times, which i will wanna talk about in a bit, but this game is so unique in terms of its reputation.
The movement is absolutely pristine once you get used to it, and understanding the world's enemies and mechanics as you play through them, you eventually feel like you finally understand the game and can play around all the hazards and enemies you thought was really unfair at the start
This game is definitely not for people who easily give up, you need a lot of time to learn the game, and a lot of the game will feel incredibly unfair at first, but if you keep at it, it will eventually start feeling a lot less like that, but instead incredibly satisfying to play. So, if youre willing to look past that, and persevere through some hours of trial and error, you get the gem which is Spelunky
Even thought there are a lot of seemingly uncontrollable elements of the game, with the ways that you die, it honestly plays into the charm of Spelunky, without some of these mechanics and the infamous , the game would lose all of its "Spelunkyness" and lose most of its identity
The achievements in the game feel like entirely different modes at times, having to relearn to play the game in some special way, which freshens up the game, albeit youll have to reexperience some of the frustrations of relearning
So while the game can be frustrating at times, i still highly recommend it, learn enough, and eventually you will uncover the super fun yet chaotic experience of Spelunky
one of the hardest games I've ever played...
but also so fun I can't quit run after run lol
No emmä tiiä aika meh, tuli muutama minuutti kokeiltuu vaa.
This is an amazing game that introduced me to the Rouge like genre.
While its sequal definitely eclipses this game, this is still an Amazing game that is hugely replayable!
I would give this game a solid 8/10!
Brutal, Unforgiving, but fun roguelike “Foddian”
This game is a Foddian game in disguise: it looks like a typical platformer/sidescroller, but plays like a rage game, in a sense that: it’s not very long, but your skill and knowledge are of utmost importance and tiny mistakes might result in huge setbacks, often - get you dead and start all over. A lot of times this happens in a chain of events. For example: you fall getting temporarily stunned, jungle-man throws boomerang at you, which pushes you in line of sight of another jungle-man, which also throws boomerang at you, which pushes you to a space without ground, you fall to death, but on top of that jungle-plant also walks over and eats your body. These kind of (and more wild) death sequences are common.
As you play more, you grow in both platforming skills and environment knowledge, consequently you are able to progress further and more consistently. New environments present new traps and require you to learn them. Unlike traditional Foddian’s though, Spelunky (both 1 and 2) allow you unlock shortcuts (to start at later biomes), but later shortcuts are not trivial.
This is a very high-skill/knowledge based game, but also high-RNG: there are genuinely tricky situations, which I’m not sure are re-solvable (a lot of them probably are by sufficiently experienced player) - you do get quite unlucky at times - this game is not “fair”. It should be noted though, that the vast majority of runs will end because of your mistakes, not because of bad luck.
Compared to Spelunky 2
Games are very similar, but Spelunky 2 is a big step forward!
- Graphics in 2nd is vastly improved
- There is more variety: as a casual player you experience 3 more biomes
- It seems like crazy-random-chain situations were typically longer and more fun in #1 (although I’m not quite sure it’s true. I might feel that way, because of novelty of Spelunky, which I experienced more when first played, which happened to be #1)
[*]More people completed the 2nd (16.3%) compared to the 1st one (9.0%) - I am surprised there is such a difference in completion, since Spelunky 2nd doesn’t feel easier (to me) than the 1st. I guess it was more engaging for people to stick till the end.
Conclusion
Took me ≈22.8 hours to complete.
Highly recommended if you have mental capacity and desire to play such a game. Although I recommend you first buy/play Spelunky 2 and then if you like that one - also come back for Spelunky 1.

Context: I played and completed Spelunky 1 ≈2.8 years ago, but only played until a simple completion. I played Spelunky 2 relatively recently (11 months ago) for 62 hours: completion and beyond and remember it much better. This review is mostly copied from my Spelunky 2 review, I just made a few edits.

OH GOLLY, I have 9 health! I sure hope nothing bad happens!
[Narrator]: Something really bad proceeds to happen

thank you fokoe you didnt lie to me and this game is melon and banana awesome
Very Hard
Very Fun
may be the best game of all time
Cannot use mouse or keybind to it. Makes game hard on the hands. Very simple and not a fan.
idk why but its mad addicting for some reason
Fuck you Foekoe you lied to me, this game sucks melon and banana
This game has ONE mechanic that is so stupidly annoying it ruins the entire game. Automatic ledge grabbing kills you a thousand times more than it helps especially when it makes you drop a weapon you wanted to shoot with while falling. It is even more stupid when you think about how you can shoot when you are hanging from a rope but can't when you are hanging from a wall and instead throw your weapon away even when you climb down to hang. What the fuck was this idiot even thinking...? This does not even make any sense. Even SNES games already did this right climbing only when holding up and it would cost nothing to also just have a toggle in the options. I only completed the game because I take challenges personally and tried doing it as fast as I could because this was not enjoyable at all. Now I can finally move on from this annoying crap.
brutally hard game, but the time investment is so low that you don't really care much when you die, time to try again!
It's fun, it's addictive, it'll break your heart, the songs will haunt your dreams, and so it goes.
Since you worked so hard to get here, I'll bet you're expecting a large reward.
Well, with all the time I've spent down here, I've come to realize a few things...
That the journey is its own reward and mastery is the greatest treasure of them all!
Just because my Steam hours are low doesn't mean my Switch hours aren't high. 300+ hours.
Of course I recommend Spelundky. One of the most famous roguelites. Brutal, but very satisfying to master.
I tried to get into spelunky 3 times over many years. The first two did get me, I think, because I got frustrated of being killed in the most unfair way possible.
On the third, I got good enough to get some progress, having solution and little game habits that made me progess.
And I got better and better, slowly. Learning how this and that are useful.
I just managed to beat the game for the firs time at 33 hours.
Spelunky isn't fun for 100 hours or 1000 hours. It gets fun for 1h, and then it asks you if you want to play another one.
I played 20+ roguelites and I can confidently say Spelunky is easily one of the best.
TLDR:
Buy it, no brainer. Once you learned to survive 5 min, it gets very, very fun.
i found my new binding of isaac
Not bad.
spelunky is an interesting game, its difficulty treads a fine line between fair and bullsh*t and the gameplay loop is fun and addicting so you just keep pushing until you get to that new area. spelunky is at times unfair, but it's also very rewarding, in a game where a single mistake can easily end your run managing to win is very accomplishing and satisfying, it's a game like no other.
It's challenging, and pushes you to learn from it and get better every time you start over.
peak game i say peak game
If you like a good challenge you'll enjoy this game.
my brother played this he became blind 10/10
Spunky
I have a skill issue but wanted to leave a bad review cause i die in the stupidest ways.
FUN
This is the hardest game I have ever played but I still beat it and it was really fun.

It's a great game, but just get Spelunky 2 at this point. It's everything Spelunky is, but better.
Hear me out on Guy Spelunky...
Possibly my favorite game of all time?
outdated, play spelunky 2
Don't get the hired hands, please.
Peak Roguelike to have fun with or without friends, probably one of my best investments ever.
spawned in to get immediately telefragged by a croc man faster than human reaction times
THE IS FIRE!!! 🔥🔥🔥An amazing platformer game that has infinite replayability and many complications and nuances to keep you interested.
Speplunkiing
Fantastic little rougelike game, not that long but very difficult and packed full of content that will keep you coming back for more.
