The Wastes is back.
Started as a love letter towards everyone's favorite wastelands as a mod for the GoldSrc engine, The Wastes returns as a completely new game using id Tech 3 technology, powered by the FTE QuakeWorld engine! It's been a long time coming, and it's time for the wasteland to get some life breathed back into it.It’s a game built upon the love for classic video games and movies by a 3-headed team. Imagine configuring and playing a game just like you did in the early 2000s.
Game-play
Singleplayer contains various modes of bot-enabled Skirmish, but we also have some Bounties (pre-made scenarios that can be played alone, or cooperatively) as well as a built-in mission editor!Experience a fast-paced multiplayer frag-fest, with buffs that affect the performance of each individual player, game-play mutators, and many different game-modes, including:
- Anarchy: A pure free-for-all. Choose your load-out and jump right in. No restrictions, no questions asked! Team variant available too.
- Team Chaos: Wipe the opposing team out in this round-based game-mode. Destroy what's left of them.
- Capture The Flag: The classic attack & defend mode that's a must for every serious multiplayer game.
- Vehicular Carnage: Jump right into the seat of your own vehicle and experience a derby with hood-mounted guns.
- Invasion: Fight against waves of Loonies, coming to get your guts!
Weapons
The game features over 30 different weapon configurations. Ranging from exotic melee weapons (like Throwing Knives and Sledgehammers) to high caliber handguns, firearm prototypes, as well as classic weapons – all waiting to be used. While people can also create load-outs to shape their play-style, you will find special weapons scattered all over the multiplayer levels along with ammunition and other items that will help you survive. You can also have mixed-akimbo configurations for the handguns.Vehicles

Really fun, needs more people playing it. Weapons are satisfying and fun to use. The maps are great to run around in and it has an awesome soundtrack. Nice blend of hl and fallout. The single player is really fun as well. I didn't expect a sp mode in this game. Some of the missions are ridiculously difficult though. The melee guys are difficult to counter and enemies just endlessly spawn in after you kill them at some points on the map, which is kinda BS.

Successor to the GoldSrc mod of the same name. Retro-style multiplayer FPS running on the FTE QuakeWorld engine. It's honestly pretty dead as far as playercount goes, but it has bot support which is good enough for me and makes it worth the price. It also has mod support, including an open source editor!

The game, as Wasteland/Wastes HL is a big nod to classic fallouts, very atmospheric, brilliant design of old 3d games. Although game has nothing beside cool aesthetics and maps, it needs a single player RPG campaign or more RPG/Tactic elements like skills and perks in multiplayer, it will also make Wastes so much more popular, sad thing is that people do not even know about Wastes. Also more cityscape maps from mod versions like Agency could've been great. But, Vera Vision did a cool job all the way.
It is good enough to for me to give it a positive, but not much more than that. The missions mostly seem based around having to pick up a weapon in a specific order and use them smartly with very little ammo and also fast before the enemies start to respawn. It is absolutely brutal on hard and even one melee guy will defeat you in melee combat if you have no ammo. It is possible that I should use the "Fury" stat more to deal more melee damage tho. I find it a little weird that a game like this has stat points.......It is interresting enough but really? The weapons in the game feel pretty good, but the hit detection is not the best. In the skirmish matches, the player AI is absolutely fucking braindead, and they also seem like bullet sponges so you are better off just using your melee and punch them in the face because their hitboxes get weird or something. This game is very very flawed. The game that I can think of that compares the most to this is actually Counter Strike Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes. The Wastes is quite a mess of a game, but there is still some enjoyment to have.
The reason im still voting this positively even though it honestly does kinda suck, is that I did get some enjoyment out of trying the missions. The game has a setting and a vibe to it that works out really well. The guns do feel and sound pretty good. Overall there seems to have been gone a good amount of effort into this, and it seems to have been made for Multiplayer, but no one play it in multiplayer. Deleted Scenes is honestly a better game than this though. (For singleplayer missions) It is a fun game to kinda try out and see, thats about it. I have a problem with the price of this game though. I think it should be half the price.
Good fun with friends. The gameplay in the MP modes is a bit like Fistful of Frags where you can pick an initial loadout and find fancier weapons to use throughout the match, much faster paced though, like classic arena shooters. If you can muster some friends who are interested in playing too it's worth picking up.
A love letter to the Arena-type multiplayer games, a throwback first-person shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world.
Fans of both Quake 3 and Half-Life are gonna love this.
If you ever played it in It's original form, the groundbreaking total conversion mod for Half-Life 1, you're in for a treat.

I do enjoy the game but the bots are probably would be more effective at pretending to be a ant, unless it's free for all or death match get stuck on each other and struggle to get around the map. I also dislike how much damage they can take, I don't think taking four shotgun shells to the chest should mean they be almost dead.
The most disappointing thing about this whole game is I can see how much love was poured into it, the guns feel great, the maps varied and well crafted. The music complemented the world well and I just don't have it in my heart to give this game a negative review. I think with few tweaks this game could be a nice post apocalyptic arena shooter.
Why haven't I come across this hidden gem sooner?! I can't even find it when I search for it on the Steam Store. Wounder why? Definetly bridges the gap between the original steam and the WON version and continues progression. The only thing I think is missing is the guns from the WON version are not all there but in their place original additions that work all good. Single Player! Wow, the first multiplayer title I know of to offer a single player mission generator and/or mini campaign. Keep developing this piece of history!
A competent arena-style FPS single/multiplayer game inspired by shooters and GURPS RPGs of that era.
The Wastes is an arena FPS that isn't afraid to throw vehicular combat into the mix, with more weapons than there are people to use them.
The Wastes has bots for offline play, and they support most game modes, but they do not drive vehicles.

The Wastes is the greatest multiplayer FPS game you've never played, and it holds a special place in my heart.
Years and years ago when I had a shitty Compaq that had some Athlon XP CPU clocked at 1.6 GHz, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, and an AGP Nvidia 5200 FX that had.. maybe 64 or 128 megabytes of memory, the selection of games I could play was somewhat limited. I also had *no* money, so I had to make due with mods for games that I already owned if I wanted something new to play. Half-Life 1 mods consisted of the majority of these. I poured countless hours into The Trenches, Sven Coop, Firearms, The Specialists, and The Wastes. Out of all of those, The Wastes was the one that struck the right chords with me: the electrifying gunplay, the great art and sound design, and the fantastic post-apocalyptic atmosphere that all of the maps had. All of the controls for that mod are permanently burned into my muscle memory, and I practically know every little detail that all of maps and weapons had.
Unfortunately, The Wastes community was tiny when I discovered it in 2005, but I managed to play it regularly with some people. Fast forward to 2016 - I'm looking around on Mod DB and I notice a news article announcing that The Wastes is being ported to a variation of the Quake 3 engine whilst being revamped and reworked. I could not believe what I was seeing, and after I read that article, I felt like I was a kid again. When the new iteration of The Wastes was released roughly two years later, that feeling came back in force, despite the fact that the first release had some significant bugs that were eventually patched out. Regardless, those blemishes did not diminish the wave of nostalgia I had.
We live in an age of cookie-cutter AAA games today; the age of highly ambitious multiplayer Half-Life or Quake total conversions is largely gone. All AAA multiplayer FPS games today are alike in some way or another; none of them have the vision or creativity that were made by people trying to find their footing in the world of game development and not having to worry about suits restricting their work. If you want to know what mods for games like Half-Life or Quake were like circa 2002, give this game a try.
These Vera Visions peeps are some real crazy motherfuckers, and I love it. Reviving a highly obscure Half-Life 1 mod (and putting it in a new engine) that's loved by only a select few - this is the shit I live for.
Do not buy this trash. It is a very low quality game by an incompetent developer. All the models are ported from the goldsource mod, exept the new player animations are crap. Feels like everything which goldsourse took care of in the original mod, was replaced with amateurish poorly designed stuff. Sound design is terrible. The burning fire sounds like gravel being crushed for example. All embient noises play incoherently. All 3 of them. The backround music is there for the purpose of obfuscating this, I believe. The gibbing is done very sloppily. An arm or a leg just randomly comes off on death sometimes, or a head gets detached. It really isnt as fun as it seems, as the gibs and corpses often noclip into walls and the floor. And blood effects are bad too.
Also, if you change the gamma/contrast, it changes that on your entire computer.
I regret buying this. It is not worth it's price, or any price. I would not recommend it even if it was free. This dev is not good enough to make an actual game. If you are interested, just play the half-life mod of the same name - you will not be missing ANYTHING. The weapons are exactly the same, there are more and better maps, and better gameplay, as it is powered with a good robust engine with all core mechanics already in place. Even the bots act almost identically. The only 'improvement' worth mentioning is that the bleeding now can be removed. The dev was blabbering something about the 'limitations' of the goldsource because of which that could not have been done, but why other mods were able to do this, action half-life for example, but for you some unpassable limitations exist? Maybe you just werent smart enough? Also there is a new separate gamemode where you play as a car with guns, if you care.
Look, this is NOT an improvement upon the mod. If anything, it is by all means a downgrade. If you think it would be like original The Wastes, but on more advanced engine, you are gonna be dissapointed.
Apparently, the dev thought that if he could make a somewhat good mod using goldsource, then he had the ability to actually build as good game from the ground-up. Well he was wrong. I bought this thinking that if he uses a genuine old engine id tech 3, then he probably knows what he is doing. That is not the case. Do not buy.
This game is a failed project, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game or that the devs necessarily did a bad job. Rather the main issue with this game is that it is an online multiplayer that literally nobody ever plays. If there were say a campaign option or something you might stick around; but there isn't.
It's meant to be a sort of nostalgic nod to old school shooters (where you can't aim down the sights, kind of like doom) and it does a good job of that I would say, but I can't in all honesty recommend it because, unless you're a fan of just playing with bots all day there isn't a whole lot to do (which in all honesty is okay but the bot AI isn't crazy good).

Good game, never got to play the Half-Life original, just needs some people to hop on and play, good classic FPS feel with reloading weapons. If you like Half-Life deathmatch you will like this. It just came out not to long ago, play it! Messing around with bots are fun because they aimbot. Weapons are very satisfying to use and hit people with.
This is not The Wastes. This is a cruder, uglier, unsubtle mess of random gimmicky features like dismemberment, vehicles and cannibal health restoration, but without the fantastic maps and intense, impactful gameplay that made The Wastes mod the best deathmatch I ever had the pleasure of playing.
Very janky interface, can't rebind half the controls, ugly HUD, constant unnecessary music on by default that ruins the intense stealth that characterised the original Wastes mod's best moments.
And I just can't figure out why they've replaced the maps with things that look uglier than Quake 1, in places, and that have no natural flow or interesting dynamics the way the ruined cities of the original played.
I bought this on an impulse for my love of the original mod, but quickly came to regret it - and can't refund the gift edition I bought for a friend.
I purchased this game a month ago, and have yet to find a single player online. Does anyone actually play this game?
If you played the old gldsrc mod then you know exactly what you are getting, along with some fancy new menu screens, new game modes and weapons, and a dev team that clearly cares deeply for a game that should have been much more popular than it was. Hopefully this is the start of a long and successful reboot of "The Wastes"
So this game is based on a very popular Haf life 1 mod with the same name. If you remember the mod stop reading and buy it! Its a multiplayer only game, but there are bots in the game some polish of the AI is needed for certain gametypes but DM works. The weapons feel great to shoot, as the devs stated this is the base game, and they intend to work on it for a long time. If you like the old school feel of shooters with a modern after taste( like sprinting) I would recommend buying this game. These modern things can also be turned off, and there are countless of game varitations thanks to the mutator system. There is also a melee and attribute system in play. The price of the game is fair if you think about how much garbage is getting here everyday. This has a lots of polish that other Early acces games in the 15 -20 dollars catergory Do not have. + all the post game content is free!!!!

A fantastic old-school FPS experience. If you loved playing games like Half-Life or Quake II online, you'll definitely love this one just as much! Despite it's old look the game feels very polished and has a lot of multiplayer content to offer. A huge plus for me is the capture the flag gamemode that so many games lack nowadays.
