This game is like if TRON 2.0's Light Cycle Races, Rush 2049, and Descent and Forsaken had a bizarre lovechild of a racing game that was 100% hopecore and ditched all the weapons in the spirit of the first two Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra games. Oh yeah even crashing doesn't kill you, you just lose all of your momentum and have to shake it off.

Now the controls are deceptively simple. There is one stick and two controls: "Snap" and accelerate. All the ABXY buttons are snap. Right trigger is accelerate. Let go to increase your turn speed and perform stunts, and you also need to "jump" before you can properly perform stunts by pulling back on the stick and then letting off "snap" - but jumps count towards your stunt. You can drift (while "snapped" to a surface), backflip, ledge jump and roll to 90 snap, 360 backflip to perfect landing, and even 720 to 180 snap. There's also a few handfuls of named complex stunts.

Now if you need the game to play faster or slower, that is available outside of multiplayer. Faster gameplay is good for exploration mode, because you won't always have a constant stream of surfaces to accelerate on.

There is a fully loaded campaign full of basic races with extra requirements, challenges, and exploration runs defined by speed. Don't be affraid to reset an exploration challenge because the star it chooses is far out of your reach.

Graphics. This game uses what appears to be a lot of well-made, pre-baked lighting, probably because it was originally made for the base model XB1 console, before the S and X. This game contains a buttload of optimization, so it's going to look good and play good on basic systems, and if you have a 4k machine it's not going to look mottled at all, because the HUD graphics scale. That being said, the levels are huge graphical shout-outs to a hopecore-esque TRON-like places with vibrant colors. Even some non-TRON weird levels like some old mine. There are multiple planets/stages with multiple levels per planet/stage, so there is a consistency with the themes. The theme of the HUD and GUI reminds me a little of the PS1 wipE'out" games, where you have text placed sideways and none of it goes to waste - all the little tooltips and flavor text means something. Oh, and the default pause menu is part of the main menu, making the game experience exceptionally streamlined.

It really is a gorgeous and polished game both in mechanics and graphics.

The soundtrack is also actual Electro/IDM. Drum n Bass is everyone's go-too, but I liked it a lot. It does fit the vibe the game is going for.

That and anyone can join at any time. If you are at home, someone can pick up a controller and join. One of the few true splitscreen racing games in modern times besides BallisticNG.

Literally my only gripe with this game is that it doesn't let you use the racing music with exploration. That's it. Well worth 15 bucks. I would pay 20 bucks for this tbh.

Exactly what I was looking for in a futuristic racer. I love the creative potential of racing in spaceships and being able to traverse vertically as well as horizontally, but hadn't found anything that really took advantage of that idea (up til this!). Satisfies the same itch as Episode 1: Racer and Mirror's Edge. Wish that it were easier to rotate the ship around the roll axis, with the same precision as pitch and yaw, but pobody's nerfect.

          Thanks for this game!

This game is widely unknown and mostly underrated. I played this already in an ealier version which lacked some focus, but the hyper edition I can definitely recommend with it's challenges and trick moves. The levels are well thought through, the mechanics and the whole true 3D racing are unique, easy to grasp but difficult to master. And the whole game has a very relaxing feel to it in gameplay, artstyle, and music.

The game is great, crisp tasty good looking, the controls are clever and fun, the level design is refined and the soundtrack is effective.
I recommend it warmly as I enjoyed it a lot.
Sadly as I noticed several indie games have this issue, I deleted my save by mystake which I would say is 90% my fault and 10% could have been better UI ; so I stopped playing because I did'nt want to redo the 5 hours I just lost. Be careful with your save files, eventually the devs would fix it, enjoy :)

It's a very unique game. Calm one if you are not into a tight time trial. The menu navigation and time trial being always ready on the map makes the game flow extremely smooth. When you have it running on your computer, it's hard not to just casually throw yourself in another time trial that won't result in any meaningful records.

The ship has a very simple control, it can pitch and yaw but not roll -- flip and 360 but no barrel roll. You can use 'snap' aligning it to a surface to indirectly roll without snapping to the surface.
The acceleration increases very slowly as you drive on a surface, but completing tricks can kick it up a bit. If you see ghost players doing a lot of tricks in a time trial, that's the spot where tricks are beneficial for faster times. This can make a difference in this game.
Racing feels harsh, as in, there's not much a chance to take over after you make a mistake. Because the control is simple, there's not much accidents that can come from outside of your control.

The maps are ridiculously large, with the actual track being only a small part of them. Stars and treasures are the justified reasons to wander around, but I hope there were more uses for all that space.

I like it a lot for how unique this game is in overall. But I can't see how it's like if there are more players, and I am probably never going to see. It's a futuristic racing game after all, one of the most niche genres.

This game could be great, but it's not. I love racing games. The aesthetics and soundtrack are also very appealing. At the end of the day though it's not easy to pick up and not that rewarding.

The snapping mechanic is unreliable garbage. Many times I found myself getting snapped up a wall and up into the sky and my race was instantly lost. There is little chance for recovery in a race. The star hunts are like doing a flight challenge from Spyro but also adding the element of being completely disoriented. Everything on the map looks the same and efficient paths do not make themselves apparent. So many times I found myself repeating a challenge, trying a completely different strategy, and getting the same medal. It is frustrating.

Even exiting the game is a challenge. The menu interface sprawls out in all directions and it is not obvious where anything is. You just have to remember that the music controls are like 3 panes over. And the game credits for some reason are in the same order of accessibility as everything else? I would frankly be embarrassed to have my name attached to this game, never mind having it so easy to see. I don't remember the last time I played a game where upon pressing START or ESC didn't bring up a menu with the immediate option to quit whatever you were doing at the time.

You could argue its a game that requires skill and finesse that rewards the player after long hours of practice, but it's too unpolished for me to believe it that's what they were going for.

I have never requested a refund on a steam game before, but I have in this instance.

The game is good and has a lot of potential but it has 3 major problems for now:

          1) Small amount of tracks and lack of their adjustment
          2) Unbalanced career difficulty and lack of good tutorial
          3) Totally dead multiplayer and lack of its adjustment

What do i mean by that? Well, first of all, there are only 7 tracks in this game (well, ok, 14 but other 7 are just bonus mirrored versions of other 7) and you cannot really adjust them at all. All modes you have for singleplayer are either one-lap time trials against ghosts of real players or 3-lap races against ghosts of bots. Yeah you may say there is also star and treasure hunting but it's more like bonus activity rather than a full-fledged mode. On top of that, even bots' ghost have only one route programmed, and because the game has changing pieces of the track they can safely go through walls which confuses you, especially when you are doing career races. Oh, about career...

It is really unbalanced, some challenges are too easy, some are too hard. Even the very first race you do in the game requires you to beat pro racer to get a gold medal and you are likely to get bronze when you only start to play. Of course, after some practice you will easily take gold but was it so hard to make more easy challenge for newcomers, like give golden medal for beating advanced or just give separate times for it? In addition, career introduces some nice mode ideas, which never appear again in the game and which have zero explanation for the career. I still don't really understand how to do tricks properly to keep the multiplayer up and score higher than for bronze medal. On top of that, at the end of pre-last chapter, in two last challenges of it, the game decides to shift difficulty to super-duper hard and these challenges become barely completable. Ok, I can understand that you need to be super precise and fast in the race against a extremely pro racer and this may take several tries, but the other challenge is like that only because there is no explanation in the game what's the damn difference between "landing", "good landing" and "perfect landing". It took me like 2 hours to complete this singe one and I'm 99% it was accidently.

And the icing on the cake is that one of the core parts of the game - racing against other people - is absent because nobody plays the game, which really hurts it. Though, being totally honest, multiplayer is not the best here: no adjust for tracks (you can’t even choose the one you want to race - it's randomly done by game), tracks only racing, no collision for players too. Was it hard to do at least multiplayer freeroam, so people could do tricks together?

          As for smaller problems:
          1) Some achievements are bugged
          2) Flight part of racing is kinda too slow and sense of speed is not the best
          3) Some career challenges have strange choice of objectives
          4) Lack of customisation for your vehicle
          5) Mostly empty freeroam

Now you may think that these problems completely kill the game and I'm not gonna recommend it but... no, it's still quite good and unique game. Despite all the issues, it's still fun to play it, interesting to complete career and just cool to beat some records of other players. Graphics are stylish, though blurry and acid a bit, music is nice, though there is not really big choice of tracks and you get tired of them in the middle of the games. Gameplay is quite unique with you having to magnet to surfaces for going faster and precisely swap surfaces to keep the pace. The ideas are really incredible but it's really painful for me to see that game with such potential fails and becomes more like a good prototype rather than a complete game.

What should do developers do? Well, reviving this game is not really the way, it seems that majority have already forgotten about it, and reviving games in general is a very subtle and complicated process with high chances of failure. It's better to develop a sequel with fixing all the issues. Add more tracks (or even let the players to create them via workshop), add at least basic adjustments for tracks ( number of laps, direction, time, number of rivals, etc), make decent AI for bots and collision for bots and players, make freeroam multiplayer, workout ideas from the career and develop them to the complete modes like tricks, star collection and many more, implement several ships and more paintjobs (and maybe even vinyls) for them, they can be either just cosmetics or can actually be unlockable and have different stats, to make races maybe making players less even in the race but making the race itself more interesting.

And this is just a small amount of what can be done. The core idea of combining ground racing, air racing and parkour is great and unique enough but the performance really suffers and that's a big pity.

But, all in all, should you buy this game? Well, if you are fine about spending 5-6 hours on not really balanced career mode, ready for small amount of tracks and can sit for hours trying to master one very track to the perfection, than - it's for you. Maybe you will even be able to talk your friends into buying this and then the game might become even more interesting.

P.S. Considering that I seem to be the only one who wrote about problems with career mode I am one of few who actually totally completed it and gotten all the achievements. Then, if developers are somehow reading this, there is a small message for them: some challenges have the same objective as a primary and as the one for hyper medal which doesn’t really make sense. Plus, the secret reward link given you at the end of the career, which seems to be some 3d models from the game doesn’t work and the site tells that those models were deleted.

it is a good idea just needs some polishing up.

the game needs updated for pc users
the keyboard controls are well.. their but it doesn't say what the start button is on the keyboard or to scroll you use the page up and page down keys
their is a lot of keys that can snap to things but it would be nice if it just told you what keys do what for their game
a main menu would be nice to ( to change the function of the keys , audio , what level or map you want to race in )

The price seems steep to me The entire game is just a constant thing it doesn't tell you what place you got with each round you just race continuously Until you get board and quit( I did not find a quit button so i have been hitting the windows key then closing the game from the taskbar.

I hope they fix these issues it is a good idea just needs some polishing up.

Exactly what I want when I think of an AG racing game. The snapping mechanic is simple but deep, trying different free-form racing lines is a fun and satisfying exercise, the ship and track designs are sweet, and there are neon trails everywhere. Love it.

Great creative racing game in space, looks like Daft Punk and TRON.
Campaign mode that starts out tutorial-like but quickly becomes challenging. This will humble you and teach you patience at hyperspeed.
A free-roam/time-trial/exploration mode, XP to be gathered, new tracks to unlock.

I am hoping there will be more online players in the near future. This game deserves more players.

          Good if you like:

          tough games with simple controls
          adrenaline
          mariokart and wipeout and mario
          new ideas
          neon

          Worth the price most definitely.
The music becomes a bit tedious for me personally, so I like to play without or with my own music. I like the vibe of the game without music the most, the silence of the surroundings seems in tune with the vastness and lifeless vibe of Lightfield's scifi world to me.
Really fun to play with your friends.

          Bonus points:

Freedom to differentiate between time trial and exploration mode freely in game, feels good.
Freshness of a new game mechanic that works intuitively very well.
When you go smooth it feels very great, it is due to the simple and effective designs of the ships, the animations and the sounds, everything works together very harmoniously.

          Minus points:

This is a nitpick, but I personally would like to see some more diversity in vibe and environments. I don't really want to hold it against this game though, it's more something I'd like to see in a follow-up or DLC. It speaks to how good this game feels to play as well; I just want more of it. This doesn't really count I guess, it's more me rambling in the middle of a review.

          Okay, real ones though:

The menu is a bit confusing in it's setup at when you start a challenge.

After getting all the different tracks you can unlock them again, but at night and mirrored. This feels a bit anticlimactic and less rewarding than getting a whole new track at another planet or something you saw from afar in a previous track. I don't dislike the idea of the nighttime mirrored tracks, buuuhuuut... I'd rather have them as an optionably unlockable feature of the tracks you've unlocked than the final tracks you can uncover.

Whatever, it's still a great game, if you can afford it and feel that tickle in your gut, your inner child yodel with delight, maybe you should buy it.

Game advertises controller support. Does not support controllers. Use an Xbox One Controller which every other steam game is fine with, except this game. Am dissapointed with false advertising of controller support and no other way to play the game.

UPDATE 01/27/19: After further diagnosing I was able to resolve this by DISABLING XBOX controller support in general settings and enabling general/STEAM controller support. This is awkward because I have to switch it back on after finishing for other games to work properly, but it did resolve the original issue.

Top notch lo-fi racing with a twist that exceeds novelty and becomes a gem. It feels as good as it looks, and sounds nice too. The controls are easy, the learning curve is comfortable, and the skill ceiling is high. Exploring and doing stunts offers more casual fun aside from the racing. The single player campaign, specifically the stunt missions, are the only thing I'd call remotely trash. Thats a lot coming from me, as I am a huge snob.

          I'd like to see more!

Amazing title. Two buttons and your steering is all it takes to make you feel completely in control - puts me in mind of Unirally on the SNES, in the best possible way. Excellent music and visuals, split screen and online play. I find myself doing a few laps against the AI, then zipping off to just explore, before getting back to the track to put in some more laps, completely seamlessly. Feels just right, highly recommended.

Really nice game with super-simple controls and amazing style. Not only the tracks, even the menu is pure eye candy. Control-wise, there is only a button for acceleration and one for snapping. Snapping to surfaces brings you a significant speed up while when fIying around freely, you are rather slow - so if you want to win a race, you need to snap from surface to surface to get optimal acceleration and speed, which can be rather challenging. There is also a variety of tricks you can do with these simple controls. If you like to go slower: There is also an exploration mode where you can take all the time you want to collect stars and treasures. I like this feature a lot, as it lets you enjoy the detailed levels much more then when racing through them. The soundtrack is quite particular, but fits the overall design well.

While it’s fair to compare Lightfield to other famous names in the genre, like F-zero and Wipeout, this game really stands out on its own, bringing some fresh air to the genre with its original mechanics and beautiful aesthetics.

The core of Lightfield is the snapping and tricks mechanics. You need to snap to a surface to achieve the highest speed, and perform tricks during your run, like 360s and barrel rolls, what results in small boost that builds up your speed, and also feel really rewarding. Mastering the tricks is a must if you want the top spots on the board (the tutorial totally skips tricks, so look for them in the menu, trickbook and controls to get started). The tracks are complex and interactive, inviting to experimentation and to try new paths during your sessions. But beware missing a turn or messing a trick can be very punishing and disorienting, sometimes forcing you to reset your position besides losing precious seconds.

The game offers a decent amount of content to keep you busy for way more than a couple hours. There are a few hand crafted tracks (and mirrored night versions) that increase in difficulty as your progress through the game, each of those has the classics time trial and race modes, and an exploration mode with stars to collect and treasures to find, for a more chill, relaxed experience. The game also features a campaign with a series of challenges involving different skills for medals, speed settings so you can play from super slo-mo to hyper fast speeds, and a photo mode.

If you are looking solely for multiplayer, I think you’ll be disappointed. Despite the local multiplayer offering all single player options, with up to 4 players sharing the screen, online gives you only race mode (you can explore if you want, but there will always be a lap counter, a timer running and no stars to collect), against 1-5 other players and it’s bonded to the track you are playing, which means if you wanna change tracks you have to quit the session, change it and then look for a new match. The seems to work fine if you have online friends to play with you, but with very limited options compared to playing locally.

Time trial and race feel very similar. In the first one you compete for the fastest time on a single lap, and the second one for 3 laps. The local race mode has difficulty settings, so you can race against ghosts/bots closer to your skill, and sometimes your own ghosts. In the time trial shows the other players ghosts closest to your time, as well as your own, which is a lot more interesting in my opinion. Your times on the race mode are erased after you quit the game, but your fastest time trial ghost is saved to haunt you and other players in future sessions.

The visuals in my opinion are impressive, very nifty and colorful, with environments way bigger than the tracks alone, hinting to possible new tracks or redesigns sharing the same scenes in the future. The soundtrack is on point, working nicely with the fast pace of the timed modes, and changing accordingly for the relaxed moments.

There is still a lot of room for improvement in the game, and I’m hinting to the multiplayer component and/or the ghost system (add other player’s ghosts to the local race mode for a pseudo-multiplayer experience, drawing tips from Forza games and Trackmania, for example), and Steam Workshop Support to add more variety and community content to the mix.

Overall, the gameplay is solid, with no significant barriers/bugs, well designed mechanics and simple controls. It’s fun right from the start, but it really rewards experience and hard work in the end. So if you are into sci-fi, zero-gravity racing, this game is definitely a fair pick, offering a lot of stuff to challenge yourself with. But you might run short if you really want online multiplayer, being safer to wait for a discount or a few updates in this case.

          Amazingly colorful!
It is fast paced, has simple controls and a beautiful environment (level design, music).

Although I'm not really into racing games, this one was particularly exciting to me because it doesn't follow the common games in this genre which have fixed tracks. Instead, just find your own track and maybe it's the fastest!

I personally had the issue that multiplayer queues took a very long time, but this might as well has been just a release bug and maybe has already been fixed.

Great game, keep up the good work! :)

If you're into fast paced, futuristic racing games, then this is the game for you! They take a unique concept for a racing game and make it really fun! It has very simple controls, but very difficult to master. That is what makes the game so fun, you can always improve. The style and artwork of the game is beautiful too! Not really a fan of the music, so I just play my own. If you're looking to support some awesome indie devs and take part in a fun, unique style, racing game, then give this a go!

I really like the many possibilities to improve my best lap time. The best racing line isn't always the obvious one which makes it very interesting to me. The ghosts of real players keep me triyng to find a better line.

I don't have a game controller, so I'm playing Lightfield with the keyboard. The keyboard layout is ok, you get used to it. But I would prefer to customize the keys. It took me some time to find out how to navigate within the menu (use the left and right SHIFT keys ;)).

The new campaign mode looks very promising and I like what I have seen so far. It slowly introduces game mechanics and tricks and keeps the challenge up for single players.

I didn't have the chance to try out the local splitscreen multiplayer yet. But I guess it's a lot of fun.

Get it, it's deffinitely worth the money.

Lightfield is true zero-grav racing! I have not gotten too crazy with wall snapping but I am sure speed runners will go crazy with the mechanic.

The highlights for me are the atmosphere and large decision space when racing. Most racing games give players few things to do besides "point straight and hit the speed boosts". Meanwhile Lightfield's drifting and snapping mean my brain is always considering what to do in the moment.

Atmosphere wise everything reminds me of Metroid Prime DS thanks to the music track. From the visuals I was expecting Tron but I like this “cold dead of space” feel much more.
