After having played the first Sonic & Sega All-Star racing, looking at this now, I can see gameplay wise it has improved on this racing game for All-Star Transformed. The vehicles transforming and some of the transforming tracks definitely gave me an element of surprise when first playing this game and it's definitely fun to race in a car, a boat and plane. And with all the features to play to progress or unlock makes it all the more enjoyable along with the challenges it has.
However, I will say, while I had a blast and I plan to play this with a few people, I will say, I do struggle a lot with boat when it goes a little out of control regardless of the handling. But despite feeling like I sometimes don't have control of the boat, I still have a blast and sometimes manage to recover. I will also say I have noticed how in the previous Sonic & Sega All-Star game, it seems the previous one, when you boost, you sometimes end up invulnerable against the track's obstacle. In here, that doesn't happen anymore. It was very abusable in the previous game. It was also much more challenging than the previous game too. But the license upgrade? I love it compared to the Sega miles from the previous game, along with being able to customize it with stickers of what one has unlocked.
The positives in my opinion overwhelms some of the game this game has, especially if you find people to play this with. The only gripe I currently have is that sometimes, it doesn't do stunts when I flick the right stick and sometimes proc it twice because it didn't buffer it before, and sometimes, the boat part of the race. but other than that, it's a swell game if you like cartoonish or fantasy like race game.
Fun game to play with my kids.
You can play as Metal Sonic, three characters from Team Fortress 2, and Ralph from Wreck it Ralph. And that one Nascar driver nobody likes. Also, the music is really good.
Do not buy this it does not launch as of the 8th of December 2024
Not putting Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed into S-tier is crazy!
It surpasses Mario Kart in technique required for continuous player improvement, and once you reach each goal along the way, it's a massive dopamine hit. Controller setup for the game can be a bit challenging if your stick drift falls outside the deadzone adjustment radius. Hitting 'Play' on Steam gives an additional option to 'configure' settings such as video, but it does not work for me. Instead, I had to run 'launcher.exe' found in the game's steam directory.
you'd have a lot of fun with this, if you like a bit of challenge per say or a change of pace (good luck getting all of the achievements)
better than its predecessor
this is singlehandedly best Sonic Kart racing game, better than TSR and has active playerbase (unlike TSR)
10/10 :D
good game
fun
I would definitely recommend this to players who haven't played a racing game yet as their first experience
Fantastic local co-op game, as the whole campaign can be played together. Might need some tweaking to get everything working perfectly so make sure to check PCGamingWiki if you have any issues. Runs and looks great.
i dont really think this game aged well, but its still fun especially considering that the first game was very fun.
could recommend if u like both sonic and racing games.
Very nice game. I recommend for kids too (>4yo).
Runs perfectly on steam deck.
Pretty good game guys......... it was pretty cool driving a tank as shadow
This game is great but the configuration on windows 11 doesn’t work for some reason but the game still plays and it still oils good even today. It’s still fun too.
My favorite cart style racing game of all time. If you have worn out Mario Kart give this a try. The transformed concept adds a fun twist and the tracks and characters are colorful and challenging.
I played this game a couple times on the PC and the game was really fun The graphics were good but as of the month ago I tried to play this game and it said the game was already running and it continued to say the same thing after I tried to uninstall the game and reinstall it I don't know if this game is even available to play anymore but it sure as hell ain't working on steam anymore which needs to be fixed so how are others able to play it but I sure as hell Kate and I tried it on several different devices but otherwise the game is really fun I think it's better than that new team Sonic racing crap
Pretty Good Game but if you have a modern gpu you will probably need to use some sort of 3rd party plugin to prevent the screen from going completely white from time to time.
Can be hard to set up, but when you do it's easily the best out of the five Sonic kart racers currently available on Steam.
way better than mario kart 7 (which this competed with) and overall a really fun game to play alone or with friends. the og is still king tho.
good memories bit challenging at times, but overhaul great game
it's been fantastic since it released, need I say more?
I love this game, this game brings back memories because I play this game on the iPad before. Playing this on the pc is even better.
This Game 2013 >> Team Sonic Racing 2019
Does anyone understand why we're just putting "collection" at the end of the names of single-release games without updates? Someone explain these morons to me.
Good game, though. 7/10
I need help this game keeps crashing every single time i try to load it and i don't understand why
yogscast & danica patrick: the video gam
alt + f4 is the key to winning the game
best mario kart alternative for pc
too fun
This is an amazing childhood game I have spent months playing back in the early 2010s.
It is a shame that they removed it from the app stores (at least from my standpoint), but this game is still as good as it was back then, and it offers different mechanics, features, and more that are different from other racing games like Mario Kart. This makes it a special and unique experience that overall makes the game more fun for me in my opinion.
I can confidently say without a care that this (especially when it is on sale), is money well spent.
crazy taxi man does mad drifts but is thwarted by team fortress pyro, sonic game good time, love sonic, great game, good time man yeah man shag birds.
Not as good as Garfield Kart :(
But it's like that newish lego racing game but budgeted and has TF2 characters so I give it a 6/10. Plus even though I may be in love with Garfield Kart, the physics in this game is 10000000000000% better than what GKFR could ever accomplish.
great game, would recommend
لا احد يشتريها لانه عشان تشغلها يبيلك 20 ملف و ونظام من عام قارون وفلاش من 2007 وماراح تشتغل بتجيك اعاقة عقلية
Great game, to bad is has almost no players
I must preface this review by saying that this is a 2010 game for 32bit PCs. THIS WILL NOT WORK on macOS 10.15 + and requires legwork for a chance at working on modern Windows PCs.
The PC Gaming Wiki helped me install on an ARM based PC BUT I have not been successful on my AMD based PC.
If you do get this to work, you will have one of the best arcade racers ever made.
You have a variety of vehicles and very stable cart drift.
If you've tried other racers, think of this as Diddy Kong racing featuring all sorts of vehicles, Mario Kart with all the characters but less of the random chance boxes that makes the winner lose, wii Mario Kart with balanced crazy maneuvering for certain vehicles.
I will really miss not being able to play this on my new PC, and I should warn customers that you should test it and see if you can get it to work on your PC immediately upon purchase.
Its a good game that i think is better than Mario Kart. Buy it
If you aint first does not mean your last. You do not always need to consistently score first place in order to win gold cup due to a rival CPU always scoring either 1st or 2nd place on all courses. It does not ask for perfection while giving you a decent challenge and even encourages a player to see it through to the end.
its rather fun. difficult, challenging sure, but it makes you feel like you wanna keep on going. plus, team fortress is there. so hell yeah
The most fun kart racing game out there. Playing the Grand Prix mode locally with upto three friends (4 players) is an absolute blast. No game comes even close, people would argue Mario Kart is better, but that's not on Windows, so there's that.
Highly recommended, 10/10!
It's not as good as the first one, but still fun regardless...(I wish Big the Cat were in this game)
I've been on a bit of a Sonic kick and have recently replayed all 3 of Sumo Digital's racing titles - Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Team Sonic Racing, and this game - and can conclusively say that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed remains their best title. Compared to the other games, Racing Transformed's tight and snappy racing mechanics that can be hard to learn but are satisfying to master. It's the hardest game of the 3 in terms of learning to control your kart/boat/plane well, but it also offers a lot options to deal with enemies/hazards/turns and whatever else you may encounter while racing. I would not recommend this to people who haven't played any other Kart games because it's already hard to learn the basic mechanics of drifting/items/stunt boosts without throwing in how your vehicles will handle differently in the air or water.
For those who only have experience with Mario Kart titles, it can be a tough learning curve. There are no blue shells to fully impede 1st place players (instead there are Bees that can fully be avoided with appropriate skill) and there are no bullet bills to catch you up if you are falling behind (instead there are All-Star moves that can be obtained at any point between 10th and 2nd place which you still have to steer to avoid bumping into walls). The game generally feels speedier and more punishing than Mario Kart (although items feel less oppressive while still being useful). Once you do adjust though, the game becomes a fresh take on the genre and the transforming aspects help it feel less stale when playing different tracks. I do have friends that are fantastic Mario Kart players but struggle because your skills with Mario Kart do not fully transfer into this game.
For players that have played the other aforementioned Sonic racing games, Transformed is an upgrade in nearly every way. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing's unique All Star moves are missed - this game has less personality than that game but is more balanced and consistent because of it - and those looking for a classic karting game might prefer that one. Team Sonic Racing is newer, prettier, and I do find myself wishing Transformed had a team based mode as that can be a fun change of pace and a rare moment for you and your friends to be cooperative in a racing game, but is a step back in every other way. The karting feels off, the roster is much worse even with only having Sonic characters (really no Cream/Chaotix aside from Vector/Babylon Rogues but instead we have Zavoc?), the tracks have much less variety, and the music is mostly forgettable aside from the main theme and Boo's house track that absolutely slaps. I still have fun playing it and have used it as a game to help others get into karting games as the team mechanic allows you to actually help them in game, but I was disappointed when it came out and really wish they did more with it.
As for this version of Transformed, the PC port feels dated to play compared to playing the game on an Xbox One or Series X with backwards compatibility. My experience playing it on the 360 back in the day was more consistent and the newer Xbox consoles only make it smoother. In comparison, the PC Port can be a little buggy, the title screen will always blow your eardrums out, you have to have all controllers connected before the game launches otherwise it will not detect inputs. I've had multiple friends have issues getting it to run on modern PCs and we lost some time to troubleshooting. There are even some in-game bugs such as the whole screen going white briefly that I have run across maybe 3 times in 60+ hours of playtime.
Even with all that, this is the definitive version of Transformed due to the roster size & continued availability over a decade later. The small issues that I have experienced don't hamper the game play noticeably and when the game shines, it shines brightly. I was lucky enough to get 7 people playing together last week and haven't had that much fun when gaming in a group for a long time.
I would rate this game an
8.5/10
- wait for a sale.It goes on sale for $5 frequently and it is a steal for that price. I would bump it up to 9.5/10 if the port was a little better and the last .5 if they added more tracks. Here's to hopefully many more hours of playing this game.
For those who have launch problems, go into the files and click on Launcher. Configure your controller and graphics how you wish, and then launch the game normally, but when it asks to make changes, always click "No" after initial setup, or it will reset your hardware configuration.
Other than that oddly specific launch problem, it is a VERY fun racing game with a bunch of SEGA's iconic faces and some crazy crossovers like Wreck it Ralph, Danica Patrick, Football Manager, and Team Fortress! Would highly recommend to any racing game and/or SEGA fan... or if you've ever wanted to see the Team Fortress characters in a racing game lol
Everything about this game is great, except for one thing. Expert mode. It is the most painful, tedious thing i've ever done. The game becomes completely unfair when it comes to expert mode. I don't understand considering that I can beat every mission on A Rank no issue, but when it comes to S Rank, All Hell breaks loose. The CPU's randomly gain speed, such as Amigo, who has one of the slowest vehicles in the game, managed to speed up right past me, and I was driving a faster vehicle then him. If you simply play on just A Rank, It's one of the best games ever, but If you decided to play S Rank, then it's one of the worst. 9/10 F Expert mode.
I have like 300+ hours on ps3 and only got it on steam for steam deck and it plays perfectly
This game is so fun its fast paced loads of missons/tasks so u cant beat the game rlly fast and its the best sonic racing game of all time 100% reccomend on getting the game the only problem with the game for me is the turning on the boat sections is pretty bad but apart from that the game is good
W Game Because My Boi Metal Sonic Is In it :)
Final Rating: 9/10
Gameplay
At its core, is a kart racer, but it distinguishes itself with the addition of transforming vehicles. Depending on the track and the section of the race, your vehicle will morph from a car to a boat or a plane, adding an extra layer of strategy and excitement. This mechanic sets the game apart from other kart racers by offering diverse racing conditions and forcing players to master different types of terrain: land, air, and water.
The game's handling is tight and responsive, with each vehicle type feeling distinct. Cars handle with traditional racing mechanics, planes allow for more verticality and freedom of movement, and boats introduce the challenge of managing water physics, making each lap dynamic as the terrain shifts. This constant transformation keeps the races fresh, as you’re forced to adapt to changing environments and controls on the fly.
Tracks and Level Design
One of the highlights of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is its track design. The courses are inspired by classic Sega franchises, with each track designed to reflect the unique aesthetics, environments, and themes of the respective games. You'll race through stages based on Sonic the Hedgehog, Panzer Dragoon, Super Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio, and many more.
The tracks themselves are dynamic, changing with each lap. Bridges collapse, new routes open up, and the terrain shifts, forcing players to adapt and plan ahead. These dynamic elements keep the tracks engaging and unpredictable, while also providing a nostalgic trip for long-time Sega fans.
Character Roster and Transformations
The roster in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is an impressive mix of Sega icons, with characters spanning across decades of gaming history. Players can race as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, but the game also features lesser-known Sega characters such as Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, Beat from Jet Set Radio, and even Wreck-It Ralph and Danica Patrick as guest racers. Each character has their own All-Star Move, a special ability that gives them a temporary boost or advantage during races.
What truly makes each character stand out is the transformation mechanic. Each racer has their own unique vehicle design for cars, boats, and planes, which helps maintain visual diversity throughout the game. The transformation animations are smooth and fast, and the vehicles themselves feel distinct between characters, adding to the overall depth of the racing mechanics.
However, the inclusion of guest characters like Wreck-It Ralph or real-life NASCAR driver Danica Patrick may feel a bit out of place to some players, especially those who are looking for more Sega-themed characters. While these additions are fun for casual fans, some hardcore Sega enthusiasts might have preferred deeper cuts from the company’s rich history.
Game Modes
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed offers a variety of game modes that cater to different playstyles. The World Tour mode serves as the game's primary single-player campaign, where players can race through different challenges and unlock new characters, tracks, and vehicle mods. The World Tour mode is well-structured, with varied mission types that go beyond traditional races. Players are tasked with completing time trials, taking out targets, or surviving waves of enemies in addition to standard racing. This variety keeps the single-player mode engaging, although the AI can feel inconsistent at times—sometimes too easy or frustratingly difficult.
The game also features Grand Prix, Time Attack, and Single Race modes, providing plenty of options for players who prefer more traditional races. Grand Prix is a series of cup challenges, similar to other kart racers, where players compete in multiple races to earn points and climb the leaderboard.
Multiplayer, both local and online, is where Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed truly shines. The game supports up to four players in split-screen and up to 10 players online. Races are fast, competitive, and chaotic, with the transformation mechanic adding a unique twist to multiplayer mayhem. The online experience is generally smooth, but depending on the platform, matchmaking can take longer, particularly on older systems. However, once in a race, the action remains fluid and competitive.
Graphics and Performance
Visually, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a vibrant and colorful game, with detailed tracks and lively environments that bring Sega's history to life. The art direction captures the essence of each franchise perfectly, whether it's the futuristic landscapes of After Burner or the whimsical worlds of Super Monkey Ball. The transformation animations are fluid, and the vehicle designs are fun and fit each character's personality.
The performance on most platforms is solid, with stable frame rates, even when the screen is filled with chaos. However, older platforms, such as the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, occasionally suffer from minor frame rate dips or texture pop-ins during intense moments. On the other hand, the PC version runs particularly well, offering the highest graphical fidelity and frame rate stability. The Nintendo Switch version of the game, while visually downgraded, maintains good performance for handheld play, making it a solid option for portable racing.
Replayability and Time Commitment
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed offers plenty of replayability thanks to its diverse character roster, varied track designs, and multiple game modes. Unlocking all the characters, vehicle mods, and completing the World Tour mode’s various challenges will keep players engaged for hours. The multiplayer modes, both online and local, add even more longevity to the game, as racing against friends or competing online offers a different experience every time.
Conclusion
Is a fantastic kart racing game that stands out from its competition, thanks to its innovative transformation mechanics and its rich homage to Sega’s storied history. The diverse roster of characters, beautifully designed tracks, and engaging gameplay mechanics make it one of the best alternatives to more popular kart racers like Mario Kart. The ability to seamlessly switch between land, sea, and air adds depth and excitement to each race, ensuring that no two laps feel the same.
While the game’s difficulty spikes in single-player mode and the inclusion of non-Sega guest characters may detract slightly from the experience, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed remains a must-play for fans of kart racing and Sega enthusiasts alike. With smooth multiplayer modes and plenty of content to unlock, the Transformed Collection offers hours of entertainment for both casual players and competitive racers.
Pros:
• Innovative transformation mechanic adds depth and variety to races.
• Beautifully designed tracks based on iconic Sega franchises.
• Tight, responsive controls and satisfying boost system.
• Fun and competitive multiplayer, both local and online.
Cons:
• Difficulty spikes in single-player mode can be frustrating.
• Some guest characters feel out of place in the Sega-themed roster.
• AI inconsistency, occasionally feeling too easy or overly difficult.
Final Rating: 9/10
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Collection is a superb kart racing experience that offers a fresh take on the genre with its dynamic, transforming vehicles and nostalgic nods to Sega’s vast game library. It’s an excellent choice for racing fans looking for something different from traditional kart racers, and it’s packed with enough content and variety to keep players engaged for the long haul.
