Features:
- Command deadly close-combat battles
Shooting down UFOs is just the beginning: you must then lead a squad of heavily-armed soldiers across different terrains as they investigate the UFO crash site. Tackle the aliens with automatic rifles, rocket launchers, and even tanks in the struggle to retrieve useful technology, weapons or life forms.
- Research and manufacture alien technologies
Successful ground assault missions will allow X-COM scientists to analyze alien items. Each new breakthrough brings you a little closer to understanding the technology and culture of the alien races. Once you have sufficient research data on the UFO's superior weapons and crafts, you'll be able to manufacture weapons of equal capability.
- Develop a strategy to save the Earth
You must make every crucial decision as you combat the powerful alien forces. But you'll also need to watch the world political situation: governments may be forced into secret pacts with the aliens and then begin to reduce X-COM funding.

Great for rts game lovers. old but very stragetic game. i love it
A classic squad based tactics game. it makes me miss my old 90s PC
The original is always the best for any game. It is real basic and you can talk to others about the type of alien you hate the most.
this is my first xcom experience and honestly, i'm fine with that. i don't think i need to play another
this holds up well
Classic MS-DOS strategy game from 1994. This game gets so much right, freedom to move, sometimes dozens of troops each ground mission. Frantic global management has you trying to cover the Earth with radar and don't forget to have enough fighters to shoot down the swarm of UFO's coming your way. Add to all this base management with research trees for alien technology that gives you instant gratification after throwing all those hopeful young men and women to their death against the alien menace.
Cons: I hope you have a lot of free time.
X-Com: Enemy Unknown, X-Com: UFO Defence, UFO: Enemy Unknown, whatever you call it, it's a classic Turn-Based Strategy game of futurism, & extra-terrestrials.
Members of Generation-X, Fans of X-Men, X-Files, Xbox, & X will enjoy this classic PC, & PS1 title.
Make a base, intercept a UFO, & send your unit of dudes dressed like Gambit from the X-Men, to capture Greys, then study them, & their technology, before using it to improve your own technology, & take on the Greys in their secret Earth-base!
If this version is too dated for you, then there is a remake series which is also excellent.
Classic... Must have!
This Game Right Here,Is If Not,One Of The Best Fucking Games On Planet Earth,Like Starship Troopers,No The The Ya Know Part,The Ad In The Intro,Like The Intro This Game Let's Think Aliens Are Easy,But Like I Said In Starship Trropers,First Off Your Units Die Within The First Month,This Game Can Be Cold-Blooded,But Yet,Charming Like X-Com Carrys That Formula,In Conlusion UFO Enemy Unknown Is The Best Game Ever,Period.
Maybe 'a bit old' game, but STILL 'a good game': start of combat situation at crash or terror site always a bit 'thrilling' - never knows for sure, where the alien(s) are! Generally good controls, but would need some 'updates' though. If you like Sci-Fi and strategy, this is one good choice to test.
the GOAT
I really enjoyed playing this. Very fun if you enjoy tactics and strategy, taking your time to make the optimal play. The randomness of this game adds to the replayability, keeping you on your toes. No battle is ever truly won or lost until your ship leaves the landing zone, and the base management portion of the game is in-depth with heaps of features.
It probably took me 40 hours to complete this game, if only Steam counted openxcom playtime
turn out the lights, turn up the sound, be ready to get scared out of your socks!
As a beginner i got lucky and stupid, thought i had the map, but then a giant floating purple guy with cape, went all black ops 1 marksman on my team below, and he refused to move so i tried to shoot the ceiling to hit him from below, but no..
That purple son of a bitch destroyed the staircase along with my teammate, he cost me 8 crew and a ship !.
Interesting old game that i will try more of in the future.
this is quite literally the best game ever made.
Excellent old game. Insanely difficult.
Tried it once or twice before, but never really gave it a proper shake. Well, now it clicked, and I can't stop playing.
This is a legit 10/10. The game has fantastic pacing, and the high lethality of the sort of hide-and-seek tactical combat, combined with the excellent atmosphere, makes for a tense and deeply satisfying experience as you go from scrappy alien defense force to efficient alien death squad.
So am I done with the game? Fuck no. I'm going straight back in to try out the mods. Like many have pointed out, OpenXcom is the best way to play this. It's super easy to install, and there are ways to still have Steam track your hours, if you care for that sort of thing.
This seems like a pretty fun game so far, but I am giving this a negative review because this product is unplayable without OpenXCom. The version that is sold through Steam is a broken mess. It runs like absolute shit. it's so laggy as to be virtually unplayable. On the menus, the lag is annoying, but on the combat grid, it becomes completely unviable to play with such a hindrance. Do not buy unless you are also willing to get OpenXCom to fix these issues. Steam should not be selling this product in its current form.
Classic game, runs slow when you are at the 4th level of height. But if your really wanted to sort that, you can just go and tinker with the DOSBox anyway.
Would highly recommend editing the play file to do bigger window (3x)
Just bought this because I heard there is a 40k mod ,and its great
Such an old game, I played it when it came out, but it did not age well. The controls, action, and timing are all very very painful to deal with. And lags with simple actions on a modern computer. If you want an old hard to figure out turn based game, this is it. As it is, find a manual, add some mods, and learn some tactics from utubers. But try not to get all your recruits killed every single mission.
Edit, I hear there's a mod that helps with the laggy 16bit graphics and mechanics. Called OpenXcom, but haven't tried it yet.
Buy this on a seasonal sale for like $2. Then go to openxcom.org and install the community rewrite for the game, which includes tons of bug fixes, UI options and Mod support.
I love the original, but the jank will limit your enjoyment. The recoded open xcom is much faster and greatly improves on a great game. (original game files are needed)
For tips:
* Laser pistols rock.
* Load out Interceptors with all Avalanche missiles.
* Accuracy is a lie. Do snap shots and shoot as much as possible.
* Smoke grenades hide your team. Drop one at the bottom of the ramp before you even exit the plane.
Still holds up to this day. One of my personal favorite games of all time.
good
I first played this game when it came out in 1994 and, perhaps because of the nostalgia, it is still incredibly atmospheric with your soldiers being at risk every minute of every mission. These days I'm playing it with the OpenXCom engine so that I can run it on a modern system at a higher resolution, and with the XCom Files mod. Lots of fun. Although, for a newer take on the game, you may be better off looking at Xenonauts or Xenonauts 2 simply because they may be easier to get started with. Or at least read up on strategy and tactics before diving in because it's a bit of a steep learning curve!
super master piece. must for everyone.
I really like Ufo - Enemy unknown, its a great game and it still holds up today even if the difficulty is a bit brutal and the interface doesn't help you out but if you are happy to read a manual its still really good fun to play.. I'm only not recommending this because the steam version is horribly laggy, even moving my geoscape feels like the buttons are in a tar pit. I have another version of this running with a different dosbox and it runs great.
TLDR great game, gash emulation.
been playing this game since the demo floppy disc for my original windows PC
This game is often on top ten lists as one of the best games of all time. If you haven't played it, you should. If you have played it, you know.
Of course it won't be for everyone, and a newcomer may find it difficult or janky. And it is janky! But, as I play newer XCom remakes(which aren't bad at all, I have to stress), I always find myself coming back to the original. The jank is part of the charm, I guess.
That said, you can update it quite a bit with OpenXCom and various mods. Breathes new life into the old game.
A wonderful classic
If you want an amazing tactical experience, get this, openxcom extended (a source port for this) and mods.
Easily the best tactical game I've ever played, playing mods with it.
If you like aliens this game is not for you
Good, but you really need to enjoy old games and their limitations to play it
didn't like it
Great game. Better than the newer xcom's.
this game is still great after all these years
Ugly graphics but still one of the best squad based games ever.
I love this game. Honestly this game shaped my childhood. Growing up, I could not wait to run home from school and fire up my Tandy PC and play this game. So many hours of my youth were spent with me and my friends playing this. So much fun and so many cherished memories revolve around it.
Oh, and if you thought for one sec I beat it when I was younger, HA!!!!!! this game took YEARS to beat, Thats XCOM baby!!!
Old school best game ever
