This is a game you will either love or hate. To me, Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game has a ton of things that I REALLY love! But for every good thing it makes, it does something equally terrible. The presentation is brilliant, but it can also be difficult to interact with things because the isometric view or multiple objects in an area. The story and writing is some of the best in the franchise, but it can take a while before you meet characters that are interesting. The world building and the atmosphere is phenomenal, but can take forever to get from one place to the next even after you've gotten the water chip
Probably the thing that makes this a mystery when it comes to reccomending this is the combat. I don't have a problem with the fact that it is turned based, I can handle it. But I can't handle it if some enemies can outright hit you from a mile away, when the game says I missed an enemy when I clearly did not or the one or two times where either you or your enemy can hit each other perfectly but don't deal a single bit of damage. It's understandable when it is a weaker enemy you fought in previous chapters, but when it's enemies stronger or similar to you, no excuse.
Furthermore, a lot of the important information that you need to get in order to get an idea of the place you are on is far too easy to avoid. I mean I didn't know of the main antagonist origin until the end of the game! However, while these are legit problems to me, I don't want to make it sound like I dislike everything about gameplay because of my experience with the modern games like New Vegas or Fallout 4. The exploration is admittely fun as there are a ton of interesting locations to find and figuring out some of the puzzles or even entire quests by thinking outside of the box never sizes to surprise me. Also, when the combat works the way it's supposed to , it can be intesne and really fun.
All in all, I would say that although Fallout 1 shows it's age in a lot of areas, it is something I would reccomend in case you are interested. I know it's not for everyone, what with the mechanics and graphics obviously, but it is captivating nonetheless.
very different from the bethesda fallouts but is still very fun in my opinion once you get used to its play style. i would recommend this to any die hard fallout fans, its fun.
great game, one of the best endings of all time, great start to a great series
The beauty of this game is what it was for it's time. It is challenging, interesting, and sometimes unpredictable. I really enjoyed seeing what started Fallout and learning what this game meant to those who created it.
Incredible game and a very difficult one at that. If you are not used to CRPG mechanics then you're going to die.... a lot, so I recommend decreasing the difficulty on your first go round and save in multiple slots. The overall atmosphere in this game is MUCH darker and depressing compared to the later Fallout entries, it's very effective. I've come across many character creation systems and this one is one of my absolute favorites, the aesthetics and artwork are superb. It is very important to understand this games perks and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system at the character creation screen because the game will punish you if you do not know how to create a sufficient character, this goes back to what I said earlier about not being used to CRPG mechanics. I also enjoyed the story and many of the characters I came across during my journey, very good game overall.
Its insanely difficult, I have barely gotten far at all and die pretty quick. I got to level 4 and got to the ghoul city, but not before the super mutants got there first. "hey, you no look like ghoul, How come?"
cool game had to watch gameplay on yt cuz it gives me a fuken headache when i play
Great Game, but definitely getting a bit old. A lot was learned about game design since then, especially about UI design, which feels quite slow and hard to use (e.g., stuff like a take all button for items, or the 'move backwards' button for your companions from Fallout 2, so they can't trap you in a room anymore like they do in this game).
If you want to play it, I suggest looking for mods to improve the experience, such as high resolution support.
An absolute classic that still holds up today. The sense of freedom, meaningful choices, and deep world-building made exploring the wasteland an incredible experience.
I loved how every decision mattered—whether it was wiping out the Khans, influencing the future of the NCR, or deciding the fate of entire towns. The writing was sharp, the humor was dark, and the game really made me feel like I was shaping the world.
The turn-based combat was surprisingly fun, especially with my Turbo Plasma Rifle and Power Armor, and watching enemies melt into a pile of goo never got old. The Cathedral and Military Base finales were intense, and escaping both explosions felt like the perfect way to wrap up the journey.
Overall, Fallout 1 was an amazing experience, and I’m glad I finally played it. It’s easy to see why this game started such an iconic series. A must-play for any RPG fan.
such a fun game, doesn't hold your hand when playing, gotta figure everything out yourself and actually pay attention. if you're a fan of fallout and turn based combat, then you should definitely give this a try
If you are a fan of the later Fallout games(fallout 3 or later), then you should definitely play 1 and 2 so you can know where the series started from. I still find enjoyment in these games years later. They're pretty short, but the whole role-playing experience is there without a doubt.
it is a bit hard to get into but after i played it i think it beats all the bethesda games i beat both one and two in one sitting and i just coulden't put the game down this game is beautiful soundtrack is beautiful and the story is beautiful
Pretty good. I hate turn-based combat so that automatically takes it down to a 6.5/10. Pretty incredible for the time it came out in.
A wonderful and frustrating game. Find a guide you like to complete the quests.
It's like playing the series I fell in love with as a kid for the first time all over again. I'd say that it's a love letter to the rest of the series, but it is in fact the wellspring itself. If you're on the fence, play it.
Absolutely incredible. Amazing amount of fun and re-playability for such an old game. If you like rpg's than as long as you have a little patience to learn the controls and mechanics than i promise you will not be disappointed.
Even as somebody who was introduced to Fallout through the 3D games, this game has quickly become one of my favorites. The main thing I love about Fallout 1 is that the game allows you to fail. If you mess up and treat the game like a low stakes sandbox where you just wander about and mess around, you will lose the game and your vault will perish. This sense of stakes makes the player act realistically, and quickly you'll find yourself role-playing without even knowing it. That is the magic of Fallout 1, the gentle hand of the games setting which forces you to adapt. 9/10
The birth of a fantastic franchise of fun, gore and nasty humor. Still worth playing 30 years later, what a game!

Absolutely amazing! the story and gameplay 10/10
This is one of the most hilarious and intelligently made game i have played for years. Highly recommend for true Fallout fans. Worth every penny of the £7.99.
Still remember playing the demo for the first time. What followed is probably one of the best single player story experiences you can have. This is a classic RPG with a great setting that takes itself seriously. Even though it's played up quit a bit, it's a bleak reminder of the power of the atom, and it's hopeless and unforgiving - the game doesn't hold your hand, and you're not expected to survive. Even though it's easily the best in the series, it's still a fairly short game. If you want more of what the original Fallout games have to offer, that's where Fallout 2 comes in.
This game is an absolute masterpiece. It is one of the best crpgs that I have ever played, with fantastic mechanics and a story that will stick with me for a long, long time. Play it. It is truly a classic that should not be forgotten.
Wanna feel like a massive Fallout nerd? Play this game. Like it, don't like it, you'll still get the enjoyment of feeling like a Fallout geek.
This was my first CRPG and I would argue it was a great place to start (especially if you are like me and can't run Baldur's Gate III). I went into this primarily as a fan of Fallout: New Vegas and that's kind of how I'm framing this review (no major spoilers though). I had come to understand that despite being in an entirely different genre, the rich and believable world of Fallout: New Vegas, along with its willingness to present tough choices with real consequences, could be traced back to the original game in the series. I wanted more of that universe and its choices, and Fallout 1 more than delivered.
That being said, the game asks a lot of you. It requires far more patience than just about any modern game I've played, and even then the reward for this patience is less tangible than, say, defeating a boss in a soulslike. This game asks you to do a lot of reading, with the reward ultimately kind of being... more reading. However mundane that sounds, the dialogue here is among the best rewards in any game I can think of. The writing is subtler than New Vegas, the comedy a little more sparse (yet equally funny), and the tone more focused... and what a tone it is. This game is *bleak*. It hasn't yet been 100 years since the bombs fell, and it shows. Civilization is only just beginning to rebuild. Fallout 1's characters take this world very seriously, because it appears they have no other choice.
Having given all that praise, on a first playthrough, I did feel like I was waving a cane in the dark. Stats are everything, so build a character poorly and you could be SOL, especially given the time limit on the main quest (the timer is actually quite forgiving, but it definitely didn't feel that way without knowing how far along the quest I was). Dialogue choices with major consequences are often not presented that way, and combat encounters come out of absolute nowhere at times. I learned to save frequently which mostly circumvented these problems, but there was definitely a good deal of frustration, especially at first. I also had to use a guide a few times, with some clues for progression being just a little too cryptic in my opinion (oldheads may disagree).
Ultimately, all of the resistance that came along with this game only made it that much more rewarding to complete. The feeling of finally taking out a Deathclaw, or repairing a robot using context clues alone and watching it clear a path forward, or realizing that the once-unintuitive controls had become second nature, or random-encountering a crashed alien spaceship, or losing a companion and choosing to let the story go on without them. Each of these moments meant a lot, and there were countless others like them.
This is definitely not a game to come home to during a stressful week at work, but it *is* a game to fall in love with on a long weekend. I highly recommend.
Despite its age and dated graphics, Fallout 1 remains an outstanding experience that truly embodies the post-apocalyptic genre. The game’s gripping narrative, immersive setting, and brutal atmosphere all combine to create a world that feels genuinely hostile and unforgiving.
One of Fallout 1’s greatest strengths is its complexity. There are no convenient quest markers here—if you want to succeed, you’ll have to pay attention, explore, and put in the effort. In the early stages, you’ll feel weak and vulnerable, yet good tactics and resourcefulness can carry you further than you’d expect. When you finally grow strong, that sense of power is palpable, but the game never stops being dangerous; even a high-level character can still meet a swift demise if you’re careless.
Overall, Fallout 1 delivers a challenging, deeply rewarding experience that stands the test of time. It’s a must-play for anyone looking to truly immerse themselves in a stark, post-nuclear world. Fallout New Vegas is called the best Fallout game even, but this one set the tone and started it all!
You can make your character a professional gambler with the IQ of a caveman
10/10 game would recommend.
Old game so world rules and combat take some learning but for sure a fun ride once you get into it. Very punishing on your first run however, expect to fail or make big mistakes and you will enjoy yourself more.
Love the OG Fallouts. Dated but amazing
this a good classic game try it the fast traveling might be funky but try
Although its lacking in intuivity at times, this games story telling telling will give you whiplash.
Its really sparks the imagination of what could, and can be in this rad world.
This is one of the most unforgiving, frustrating, and sometimes downright confusing games I have ever played. That being said, oh my goodness was it unbelievably fun! Once I started it was very hard to stop. It does have a bit of a learning curve to it, and there was multiple times I had to reference the internet for help, but I could not step away from this game. I'd 100% recommend this game, it is amazing!
Controls are Horrible. The story is great. Just like i remember.
Fallout 1 is undeniably a classic, but it's incredibly outdated by today's standards. The graphics are rough, the controls feel clunky, and the pacing can be a bit slow for modern tastes. If you're not a fan of that old-school RPG style, it's tough to look past the rough edges. The story and world-building are still solid, and there’s a charm to the game that some will enjoy, especially for those who appreciate the roots of the Fallout series.
But honestly, it’s really only for people who are into that nostalgic, old-school RPG feel. If you’re expecting something more polished or modern, you might want to pass on this one.
5,5/10
Only for hardcore fans of retro RPGs. It’s hard to recommend to a broader audience.
when the funny giant bug, funny nuclear war, cool power armor, awesome little cool gun game turns into a tragedy in which its misguided villains try to save the world, with no good end in reach to justify their horrific and genocidal means. oh my goodness gracious dude.
oh hey also fun fact, the Glow woke me up to a whole series of fears i never knew i had. this game is so awesome dude.
One of the best something, something I beat the game something, something, master kills himself something, something
Fantastic RPG that is surprisingly accessible for newcomers. The story, atmosphere, and pacing are all fantastic. The upgrade system is arguably a little too simple, but it works for the game's short length. Overall this is a classic, bite-sized RPG that everyone should try.
Amazing atmosphere and introduction to the series. Gritty and dark, post apocalyptic nuclear amazingness.
something very simple in that it is 2D but so very complex; in the story and mechanics
Excellent game, a classic, it's from the 90s so don't expect it to hold your hand.
I can tell why this game is so popular, it has a great story, and a gritty setting that definitely mellows somewhat in later games.
However, I don't think I'll be playing it more than once. I managed to get power armor, save Vault 13, and destroy The Master. I' content with that win.
One regret: I wish I hadn't taken the one-hander trait. I feel like picking traits at the beginning is a poor choice on my part, since they all have drawbacks. In my case, one-hander served me well in the early game (especially since I got a .223 pistol very early on), but it stopped me from experimenting with the other cool weapons in the game.
Word to new players: Sneaking is auto-disabled if you have always run enabled, this is important to switch to manual, since while sneaking a single enemy who spots you can have a whole gunfight with you and the other chumps in the room won't notice, as long as you don't wander too close to them during the fight.
Word to new players 2: Don't worry about ammo too much, there's always more, so Dakka away!
Word to new players 3: Don't be too proud to look up guides online, games this old usually came with guidebooks anyway.
this game will make you hate it, and in doing so, that's when you'll begin to love it. it's not fast or flashy or beautiful, it's not some 50's era bubblegum bullshit bethesda cranks out. this is made by the same devs who made new vegas. the only fps fallout game worth playing. obsidian produced fallout with love and care and attention to detail that modern devs couldn't replicate with a trillion dollar budget. step into this world and understand what fallout really is. this game has no tutorial and no hand holding. you will simply have to die and try until you get there. and on that bittersweet day, you will understand. good luck
It's hard to imagine playing a top down, turn based, rpg, under the Fallout title. Especially after playing through games like Fallout 3, and New Vegas. But, after learning the mechanics, and following a progression path, I began to enjoy this game much more than I expected to. I even completed my entire first play through. It's given me the motivation to play the second game, and I think it's really great for its time.
Good Fallout game, the plot is good and you have a lot of options to deal with the main quest and the side quests, the controls are a bit hard to figure out, it's not a big deal since you can just press F1 in game to show the controls. It is also a very short Fallout game, there's not that many side quests compared to the later games and you can beat the game in a few hours if you know what you're doing. I kid you not, I was level 10 (almost level 11) when I beated the game, although it's excusable, since this is the first Fallout game. I recommend trying this out along with Fallout 2 and New Vegas.
Lots of bugs, including ones that prevent quest progression and the requirement of numerous mods and patches to make the game playable.
I appreciate the grim, and gritty aspect of Interplay's post apocalyptic universe.
its a fantastic game and if your a fallout fan give this a shot! the 150 day timer can be intense at first, but if you dont walk around the whole map you'll be fine. after getting the chip, the game really opens up. and like fallout new vegas your choices matter, which makes you want to play it again. the combat is solid. its bit hard at first, but it makes since since your a vault dweller who's never had to fight they're whole life. overall its a fantastic game would play again. the only real issue i had with the game was it didnt have quest tracking, but it came out in 1997 so its good enough for its time. and the only bug i found was a bug that caused some memory error that crashed my game a few times but it only happened at the end of the game so it was annoying for like 10 minuts.
Damn, Interplay had no chill with this game. No Mercy is shown for the player at all in Fallout 1. Fallout 1 is a very difficult, but fun game. Interplay had a clue of how to make this game. Now, I don't have much to say about Fallout 1, but it is quite interesting and challenging. Unlike Fallout 3-76, Fallout 1 shows no mercy for the player. Even fighting the most basic enemies in Fallout 1 is a challenge. It seems that the developers knew what they were doing, I am very happy and satisfied with the money I put into buying this game
10/10 Game
Positives:
- Classic masterpiece.
- Lets you choose 'male' & 'female' instead of body type 1 or 2. Ah, those were the days.
Negatives:
- A buggy mess that feels clunky & awkward by modern standards. Can be mitigated by fan made patches.
Notes:
Overall a bit of a rough diamond, but definitely worth picking up on sale.
its a classic and fun with many hours of game play with lots of lore of fallout.
