I really like this game i recomend you play it if you are a Fallout Fan it is a 2D game the controls are a bit hard but when you figer it out its very fun your goal in this game is to find a waterchip for your vault it has a timer on 150 days if you dont find the waterchp in that 150 days you lose and your vault dies out but when you find the waterchip the timer stops in this game your action points is everthing in this game it takes action points to sprint shoot open your inventory so basicly everthing takes action points i do not recomend Fallout 1 as your first Fallout game i recomend to start with Fallout 4 or 76 if you are a new player. and thats my review on Fallout 1
It's good. Just finished it and am waiting for Fallout 2 to finish downloading while writing this. Oh, looksie, it just finished. I'm gonna play Fallout 2 now.
No Idea on what to do but I'm enjoying the game before my inevitable death by a Death Claw or rat. Also Get the Rope, I don't know why but It seems to be important according to others.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys turn-based style games or anyone who likes the story of Fallout there are some spots you'll have to look up but you still have an amazing experience, especially for the time that this was made
This game is old as fuck. The story and world (oh, the world!) is good, don't get me wrong, but the actual gameplay portion is clunky and often exceedingly cryptic for no reason. This game is absolutely classic, but I don't blame anybody that uses a walkthrough or even edits their saves to see this game to completion - or even just past its start.
TL;DR: Absolutely classic game, but also old as all hell.
Steep learning curve, especially for anyone like myself with goopy goblin gamer brain, but once you get past that it is one of the best RPGs ever made
While as a vanilla game it is a slow start and a bit of a slog to play through, the interactions are great because you really don't play through the same game twice. There's always something different to find or do and so many characters to interact with. I would recommend installing Fixt or et tu some better gameplay.
Really really fun, even if it is buggy at times.
This is the best game of all time, besides silent hill 2 and red dead redemption 2. This game changed how I view my life, and it made me gain 10 IQ. It truly did revitalise what made gaming special. It's just... So peak. Larian studios should remake this game and give it the Baldur's gate 3 treatment. It deserves it greatly.
Ok look if you're reading this you probably already know this game is fantastic. You probably already know it has a phenomenally good story so I'm not going to bother selling you on the game.
Instead, I'm going to tell you HOW to play it. Because that's the part most people seem to struggle with.
1. Character creation is crucial and its the number one barrier of entry for playing this game. So here's a hint, set Agility to 10, and take the Gifted trait. Charisma can be used as a dump stat since it's useless, so set it to 1 and spend the points elsewhere. Second most important stat is intelligence since it judges your skill point gain per level up. Go for high Endurance if doing melee and high Perception if doing guns. For tagged skills, pick a weapon skill, either Small Guns, Unarmed or Melee weapons, and then two utility skills, Speech, Lockpick, Sneak and Repair are all solid choices depending on your playstyle.
2. In the Hub, there is an NPC called Irwin, do his quest and he will give you the best Small Guns weapon in the game, this is a fantastic weapon to use for most of the midgame.
3. Do not invest in Big Guns or Energy weapons until after you collect the water chip and especially don't tag them, because the weapons that use that skill don't show up until later. Once you do reach the midgame, gradually transition over to these weapons as small guns and melee fall off in usefulness. The Minigun, the Gatling Laser and the Plasma Rifle are all viable endgame weapons.
4. If you go to the Brotherhood of Steel bunker and talk to an NPC called Talus he'll give you a mission to retrieve an NPC in the Hub. Do this and select the Power Armour as your reward. It's the best armour in the game and mandatory if you want to combat your way through the endgame.
5. To use an item from the Inventory screen like Stimpaks, right click the item, scroll down to the hand icon, then let go. Hold shift to run, there's an option in the menu to make your character always run, I recommend turning this on.
Good luck out there Vault Dweller.
Its NOT garbage. but it is just too old for me.
got into Fallout games when 3 launched (I was 10). I loved it, and have been playing each release since. I'm a huge lore nerd, and now that I'm pushing 30 i decided to return to where it all began.
as someone who did not grow up on this particular style of RPG, and doesnt have nostalgia for this game in particular, i did not enjoy it. I appreciate and am thankful for the lore, and world it created. However the game play and visuals are just not enjoyable to me, and theres only so much time in the day to play games as an adult. Ill give the 2nd one a fair shake next, but this just wasnt for me.
Have always enjoyed this game. Really brings out the adventurer in the player and creativity. It will hook you fo sho
might be too much on smooth brain people nowadays but if You invested at least 2 points in intelligence and can read, You should give this game a shot, excellent experience, i invested 2 points and can read and i enjoyed it very much ;)
For anyone curious to try out the originals after playing the Bethesda Fallout's, do it. While there may be a learning curve at first as you get used to the way the game works, the controls will become second nature in no time. The story you uncover and characters you meet while traveling the wastes in the first entry to the series are all top notch. I can't recommend this game enough.
Great game.
"I... don't think that I can continue. Continue? To have done the things I have done in the name of progress and healing. It was madness. I can see that now. Madness. Madness? There is no hope. Leave now, leave while you still have hope..."
Great Game.
It's kind of hard for me to decide how to rate this game. I give it a reluctant positive review, mostly just because it's really interesting to see how this game made the foundation for a wonderful game series. The game itself definitely has some classic charm to it, but I wouldn't really describe it as fun. The game is built around the conventions of a realistic tabletop role-playing game, because that's what it's trying to emulate. Some things just don't translate to a fun experience on a computer, but they still contribute to the game.
I got all the way to the last story mission and realized that the only option I had to complete it was the head-on combat option; I hadn't finished enough side quests to unlock other routes. Since my character throughout this 25-hour run was charisma based, I simply couldn’t win the fights. I read a guide and saw that I had missed several side-quests that would unlock other routes in the final quest, and to finish the game I would need to go back and play these quests. I decided to watch someone else play the last chapter instead.
Play the game some to get to know the original game in the fallout series, but unless you are genuinely enjoying the gameplay, I would just read a summary of the story once you feel like you've experienced the gameplay enough.
really good game if you know how to play your card right (im stupid so i played the game with the worst stats the whole playthrough)
Played this game in my early teens and was hooked back then. Played it again as an old guy now and it actually has gotten better with my more mature understanding.
Awesome game and still worth a play this 2024.
PS -- FO1 and FO2 is better than 3 onwards.

Probably the best fallout game in terms of writing. The ending and the villain is too good.
i fucking hate this fucking game buy fallout new vegas instead it dosent save auto and you companion can fucking kill you
Just a absolute classic if you are not into top down views or isometric games you might not like it though. But I would say I'm not crazy about isometric but even I love this game. 100/10 amazing game
Very punishing, and very dark. The game does not hold your hand at all, but it is very satisfying when you figure things out, and get good at the game. The voice acting wasn't the best at times, but it was decent enough. However it is a shame that some major bugs that can prevent you from getting certain endings, never got fixed. I don't believe a remake is needed, but I would really like one. With a remake acting as an alternative to the original, and not a complete replacement.
If you want a guide for the game watch 'How TF to play fallout' by games twice over. (Youtube)
the definition of suffering is to play this game. 10/10 would recommend.
As much as I love this ancient classic from my childhood it simply does NOT work.
No clue what to do to fix it, or if its even possible to buying this was a waste of money.
the best part of fallout was when the vault dweller said "ITS DWELLING TIME" and dwelled all over vault 13
The early fallout games are extremly underrated
.Good story
.Good Graphics(For it's time)
.Legendary Ending
In my quest to play every non Bethesda fallout title, Fallout definitely had humble beginnings, the story is kind of hard to follow if you aren't interacting with every single NPC in the game. I didn't even realize some story beats until the overseer flatly told me about it towards the ending. However, with all those negatives, the game holds up very well, and without this title, there would be no fallout game franchise to begin with, while I probably won't see myself doing a second playthrough, I'm glad I played it. 7/10
I played this game for the first time back in the late '90s on a laptop. Has always held a special place in my memories. Very antiquated by today's standards, but still so fun and brutally difficult. Old but gold.
Great to play, but if I haven't played the 3D Fallouts before I would have never cared enough to get through it. I recommend watching a guide or at least reading through what stats to level up as this S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system is VERY different than in the 3D Fallouts. I think I prefer Fallout 2, but it's great to experience where one of my favourite franchises of all time started.
how it all began! young players will miss a lot of pop culture references but the original fallout is awesome. a friend in Canada mailed this to me in the 90s and the rest is history.
This game is a fucking hidden gem that not many people will take a glance at due to how old it is. The story, characters, and decision making are amazing. Combat is hardcore and brutal but unfortunately the controls are obviously painful to learn. 9/10
Even though the game is dated and can be hard to get into for that reason. Once you learn the controls, and die enough times to realize “maybe I shouldn’t try to fight the deathclaws outside gun runners with an smg that uses up all my action points” it’s harsh unforgiving game play becomes less frustrating. The story is great and you can tell that the developers wanted it to be the centrepiece of the game.
Fallout 1 is pretty bog standard but presented a bunch of cool concepts that would be expanded upon in fallout 2. The various solutions to quest. Word of warning though, it would be a good idea to look up how to do things since the game throws you in the deep end.
The game also functions on the deck (needs the track pad) its great to play for a bit and just pick up where you left off
I wasn't sure if this game would be for me but after watching a few videos and diving in, I'm finding myself having lots of fun, even despite the ancient interface and mechanics. There's definitely a learning curve but beyond it lies a great game worth exploring.
overseer: thanks for finding the water chip but you need to destroy the master.
vault dweller: nah i'd win.
1 month later.
overseer: you did it you saved us but i'm sorry you're a hero and you have to leave.
vault dweller: pulls out brass knuckles and gives the most brutal punch.
splatter.
Maybe you're a thing of me.
Spent the first 5 hours without knowing I could get a companion (Literally me, since i spent a LOT of time without a companion). Makes role-playing even more immersive than ever. -Sincerely Unga Bunga 8 Str player.
10/10 ONE of the BEST RPG i've played since baldur's gate trilogy.
Your bones are scraped clean by the desolate wind. Your Vault will now surely die, as you have.
I was nearly able to beat this game in an 8 hour shift, I rate this a vault 13 out of 10 only way it could be better is if they made a mobile port, and if it had micro-transaction loot box cosmetics as well as an unpredictably sized update every two weeks that provides minimal if any actual improvements. Overall this is baller, it goes hard, this is probably worth $69.99, if you like half lucid dreams this game is for you, you'll snap awake about 8 hours into your playthrough and realize that wasn’t radiation from an abandoned vault you were feeling, that was the heat from the gas stove you accidentally left lit the afternoon before (If you don't get game ended by gas poisoning first you’ll most likely snap awake from the trance that is this game at breakneck speed around 3:30 AM and remember you have to wake up for your minimum wage job in 3 hours and regret that you have to go touch irritated produce for another 8 hours.)
This game is shit. It is very unbalanced and not fun. The only people who like it are chudified Caeaser Legion fanboys like S*m H*de. Upon starting the game you are greeted by an intro cut scene, seeing this was my first red flag. The intro was very low texture, which I only like in games made now that have bad textures on purpose, like Celeste and Bloodborne PS1. Regardless I managed to close my eyes until it was over. Upon selecting "New Game" I saw a series of pre-made characters, 2/3 OF WHICH WERE M*N!!! This is so much of why this game sucks, it is clearly aimed at sweaty basement dwellers and not normal well adjusted people such as myself. After picking the only female option, I watched a cut scene about getting a water chip (NEW VEGAS REFERENCE?!!!) and walked out into the vault. I repeatedly died to the rats in the cave, but I managed to push through. I found the difficulty quite the interesting twist on the series formula, but it feels a bit derivative of games such as Hollow Knight. I then arrived in a town called Shady Sands, this made me excited as I something of a fan of New Vegas and in the G.I Blues quest, Shady Sands is revealed to be the founding place of the NCR, which although not perfect, is the best faction in Fallout. I was recruited by some dude with any ugly face to kill some bandits and save his daughter, which I did with the help of a G*d Mode mod. But once I saved her, I saw an option to romance her, but after clicking it she said she wasn't gay and ran off. This is when I stopped playing, this game is clearly just a way for depraved men to get out their sexual fantasies which is icky and gross and bad and they're weird for that. It clearly has no regard for any other perspectives, as it fails to account for other groups' fantasies which would make the game not weird o algo. I bet Tim Cain, this game's director, is probably very homophobic and I hope he gets unalived.
I'm trans btw, if that matters
Game is a solid 9/10 even after all these years. Once you get over some weird (outdated by today standards) mechanics game becomes much more enjoyable. The only bad thing about the steam version is that some endings are unobtainable without using mods or editing game files
A timeless classic, the original Fallout is one of the most influential CRPGs ever released, a game that everyone who loves the genre should play at least once.
Set in a bleak, unforgiving world, Fallout's atmosphere and tone are much darker compareted to those found in its sequels: the main character is challenged with tasks and issues that fit the post-apocaliptyc badlands found in 2161's southern California.
The quests in Fallout can always be resolved in a number of different ways and the player will see the consequences of his decisions take play and affect the world and its characters while travelling through the wasteland.
Though it may not be the most accessible title when it comes down to gameplay, I found the combat system to be very fun and engaging, the commands take some getting used to but they will feel surprisingly natural after playing the game for a couple of hours.
Fallout also has some great mods (namely Fallout Fixt, Et Tu and the High-res patch) that will elevate your overall experience by making the game feel less "old" and polishing it further.
Even 26 years after its original release this masterfully crafted CRPG still offers a truly unique roleplaying experience.
It's a bit jank. There's a few glitches and bugs that aren't fixed (spy in the followers), and a few things are dated, but I still say it's worth a playthrough at least. It's nice to see how the Fallout series started, and it definitely started well. 8.5/10.
Despite the fact that this game came out 27 years ago, it's still really fun! It's challenging, and it feels like it throws you into the deep end a fair bit, but take your time with it near the start and you'll figure things out. Meanwhile it's really relaxing to be playing a turn-based Fallout game. I definitely feel invested, despite it being incredibly different to the modern Fallout games which I've loved (3, 4, and New Vegas).
I am not a huge FO fan (I did play 3 and 4 but not NV yet) but I was curious to see how these older games played out and so far I am really liking it. There is so much exploration but not nearly as overwhelming as some of the more modern open world rpgs and this one is very heavy on the classic tactical rpg like Baulder's gate. If you are interested I do recommend it and I have every intention of finishing it. it is so nice to play a game that just 'works' ya know?
This game is really good. Almost too good. It's the story of Bethesda Fallout, but far more grim and gritty I would say. Bethesda plays on the nostalgia of olden times in order to fuel the narrative of their story. The characters in Bethesda all feel sorta cartoony and fake in a way. The original Fallout however uses the concept of survival and the struggle in a post-apocalyptic landscape as its device. It thus paints a picture which is far more dark than that of Bethesda. The role-playing elements are also very well-implemented and if you are a fan of JRPGs like me, you would love this style of game. The characters each have a distinctive personality which is memorable. The master is such an awesome boss. 9/10 very good
Though I'm not sure why, this game gives me the impression that it's genuine or honest in some way that newer games are not. It feels like a time capsule buried during a foregone era when games were designed to provide a fun experience rather than to foster an addiction.
If you don't mind skimming the manual and adapting to the mildly outdated controls, this game is so much fun. The world is packed with detail and there are many different stories to explore. I will probably be playing it through one or two more times.
i expected it to be boring but the more you play the more epic it feels. especialy when i got power armor i felt a lot like my level 48 courier in fallout:new vegas on ps3.
Great game. But its can be quite hard especially for early game.
