ASH OF WAR™ - Message from CEO
"Let's make it for fun, for ourselves"
- our first words since we started.Greetings, hope all of you are enjoying your days great.
I wrote this, because I want to share something to you that important for me.
First of all, let me tell you how it all started.
One day, I was playing my console in a known game published by a known company. Game is indie, 2D, about first World War with excellent narrative and art style that made me very sad in the end.
Literally, that game inspired me way too much that I decided to create something own. Yes, I have passion to war histories, because my family was strict addicted to the warfare since I was born.
"Hey, mate! I have something to do!"
- our first step in the idea.I made a call to my buddy, he is an artist. We discussed the idea wisely and he supported me. We were army of two, first concepts have being created. It helped us to hire some enthusiasts who brought their ideas as well. Concept after concept, level after level, idea after idea we were boiling in our process.
“ASH OF WAR? What do you think?”
- our first thoughts on the project’s name.Yes, not the ashes as you think. “ASH” sounds badass. We created a local in-game squad’s name “ASH” to avoid questions. Fine, we blindly started to create 2D sprites and characters that fit in the project. At that moment we didn’t have powerful programmer and animator to test our sprites and scenes in Unity3D.
“It looks cool, keep going mate!”
- our first impressions on development process. Not cool at all. Inspiration went away too unexpectedly. We stuck. There were still no animator and programmer to bring our lifeless sprites to life. Finally, we found 2D animator for our sprite characters. New wave of inspiration for all of us. Okay, few animations on our balance. I was searching deeply for a programmer and I found him!
“We should make an announce on Greenlight!”
- our first mistake was made.Focused as never before, we created few scenes for a demo to capture some screenshots and trailer. We were so close to show off but just for trailer and screenshots. So, we published, I remember how happy we were like we launched a rocket into the space.
“What is this shit? Trailer describes nothing!”
- our first review on Greenlight.Like a fall into the wet dirt. No worries, we kept strong but difficulties struck a lot in the development progress. Problems with animations, coding arrived in a wrong time when we were demoralised by reviews. It was all summed up and made a crack in our small team. Programmer and animator left us. Army of two, again.
“Mate, I can’t take it anymore…”
- our first failure. The process was frozen. Our dreams ruined at all. I supported my buddy artist as much as I could do. Anyway he found a job and same was for me. It seemed like the end for our project. I experienced a very strong kind of depression that changed my life completely.
“Do you think I stopped?”
- our first serious business.Come back of our history like rise from the ashes. I earned some money while I was working and made a tiny budget for us. We united for “ASH OF WAR” again. Hired new animator, new programmer and sound designer that allowed to us promote the project further. New professional level of development came too. Huge changes impacted us as well. We decided to rework some sprites completely and replace 2D sprite characters to 3D, because it’s cheaper with animations. So, a year of development passed away.
“Sir, we are landing!”
- our first release.I can’t believe we’ve done this. I wrote this personally from my heart and this message is directed to my team too. My appreciation is borderless. Yes, probably I’m bad organiser in some moments but my goal was to let freedom that all of us brought their ideas into the project. For example, we had tasks and I said like “You are an animator, bring your thoughts how they should act in your opinion. I trust your choice, it’s up to you”. It worked and the only thing I’ve got that our team has talented guys who can understand what to do. The road was extremely difficult especially for me and the artist but in the end our dream came true.
Thank you, all of you.
Sincerely yours,
V.B.

Good game with OK graphic.
Story is a little confusing
Controls are annoying
If you want to try just grab on discount!
Quality in a product or service is not what the supplier puts in. it is what the customer gets out and is willing to pay for. A product is not quality because it is hard to make and costs a lot of money, as manufacturers typically believe. "Stephen King"

good story
works and looks great on SteamDeck! I think you should port it officially to deck and smartphones!
Everything is horrendous bar the music.
The story is terrible in every aspect - direction, plot, voice acting, constant grammar mistakes, and weird unnatural sentences.
Instead of delving into lengthy explanations, I will just showcase a few examples from one of the in-game “cutscenes” (press UP to change the photo and the voice-over):
* “There was a tense atmosphere in the air, although the city seemed safe to me” (the fire was burning, but it seemed cold to me).
* “I rushed into daddy’s arms and couldn’t let him go” (mate…)
* “Joe”, - dad told me, “I want you could be able to protect yourself there” (mucho English, mein Komrade)
Also, for whatever reason, the main character accent shifts to a one of an Englishman as he grows old in some Central State. Guess that the way puberty works sometimes…
The gameplay consists of a bunch of tedious boring mini-games that go on for way too long (like the convoy shootout - also, why does the main character have the hangover shakes and tremors?).
Artistically, the game is crude - the 3D models are blocky and ugly (especially the faces) and the backgrounds are stylistically inconsistent.
Verdict: don't waste your money, don't waste your time.
It is a strange game, it is really hard to execute some things and the upcoming DLC never casme out, please dont buy it.
Anyway, atmospheric music is nice

My neighbor experienced similar story!
12/10 true stories ever!
I DO RECOMMEND THIS GAME!
First of all, I want to apologize, I tried torrent version first :D and made it till the end! This game is very soulful, it has bad aspects but it's indie and look at its price!! Come on guys with those negative reviews!
P.S. I support you devs, in love with cinematics! Amazing idea! <3
this game is just awful god awful
its trash, refunded and it was only priced at 1.13. Couldnt go beyond 1st chapter, due to its bugs.
Should you buy the game? Is it worth the money? Short answer is no (to both), however, I do think you should get it when it goes on sale (I got it for 1.70$ CAD on sale).
(message for the Devs at the bottom)
Let's talk about the Pros:
- The game honestly looks gorgeous, and for an indie game, pretty surprising.
- All the animations look great, smooth, and pretty realistic.
- Character models look pretty good and you do see some decent variety.
- For the most part has a pretty immersive story and narrative.
- Sheds light on real issues concerning war and its effects on the soldiers who fight in it.
- Decent level variation
Let's talk about the Cons:
- The gameplay; not gonna lie, it's more of a chore than it is fun.
- Combat segments are way too long
- levels lack checkpoints since if you lose, most of the time you have to restart the entire mission (which is tedious as hell).
- The English; how in the hell is it this bad? We get it, your first language isn't English but man, your voice actors (except for Joe's) all sound perfectly anglophone, did they not point out how most of the sentences spoken make absolutely no sense (of course, as someone who speaks English as a first language, I get what they're trying to say in the dialogue but the thing is that it's painfully obvious that it wasn't proofread at all, it sounds like he pulled it straight out of google translate). It occurs all throughout the game and I genuinely struggled to find a single well formulated sentence. Devs, if you want me to proofread your material; please hit me up, I would not mind at all.
- The story is pretty stereotypical and cliche (although it does have a few minor unique aspects) and while they try to go for an immersive sad story; the poorly formulated sentences, grammar, and the voice actor (for Joe only) is quite terrible at speaking English in all honesty, however, you do see that he gives it a lot of effort and i congratulate him for at least that.
Conclusion:
You can tell the devs put some hard work into this game and it has some interesting concepts, and a story that tries really hard to immerse you, but it all falls flat due to poor English and tediously lengthy game play segments in some parts of the game.
6/10
Devs, your game has so much potential but it's severely lacking. In all honesty, I would be fully willing to help you guys out with refining your game; I could proofread your material, give you insight on how to make small tweaks which would dramatically improve the game play experience, and generally give you helpful insight. Just let me know.
Ash of War is an interesting game, but it has one of the worst executions I've ever seen.
Story:
In Ash of War you plays as Joe. Joe is a young gamer who loves playing military shooters and when he grows older he decides to follow in the steps of his father who is a soldier in the military. Well the story picks up in the war as Joe has to go through to military situations.
When you start the game it says it's based on a true story and I don't know if I believe that, I mean it's entirely possible, but however I will still criticize the story, because it's really poorly told.
The best way I can describe the story is pretty disjointed. It's split into three segments, the home life, training and the army. The first two segments are alright and paced pretty well, but once you get to the army it just feels like a re-tread of the usual army stuff you see in movies and other games and it's actually pretty disappointing.
Graphics:
Ash of War, for an indie game looks pretty damn good. The graphics aren't anything special, but for an indie game it's actually really well designed. The environments are really well designed and for an indie are quite impressive, but however there are other problems.
A lot of the character models are reused throughout and since the game wants you to be emotionally attached, it becomes difficult to do so, since all you do is fight the same enemy over and over again and save the same soldiers.
Audio:
When I reviewed Play with Me, I, at the time considered the voice acting in that game the worst I have ever heard in my entire life, but somehow Ash of War tops it. To explain how bad the voice acting is pretty difficult, without you actually hearing it.
Another thing I found pretty immersion shattering is the fact that the game takes place in America and the main character Joe is voiced by someone with a really thick accent and when he was a kid he could speak fluent english without an accent.
Gameplay:
Ash of War is pretty much a simple side-scrolling adventure where each level you get to do different things from a on rails turret section that was super hard to control, a terrible maze level and a bunch of other stuff. Sadly none of it is fun and it ends up being quite annoying.
To elaborate on the gameplay a little bit, I'll talk about the main two mechanics: shooting and QTEs, first the shooting. The shooting is really really bad. The cursor jumps all over the place and is super hard to control and it feels like Joe is stuck in a endless drunk mode, but this doesn't hold a candle to the QTEs. The quick time events are absolutely dreadful and kills the game entirely, especially the desert fight. The QTEs aren't that hard, but most of the time they move really fast and are super hard to hit on time and if you fail them, this could send you back minutes back and replay the same section over and over again.
Verdict:
Ash of War is really disappointing. It's a great concept with a poor execution, it's short, has terrible gameplay, absolutely atrocious voice acting and other issues make this game a rather disappointing experience. If you want a good military game with a really good story go and play Spec Ops The Line.
Pros:
+ Graphics are decent
Cons:
- Some of the worst voice acting on this planet
- Terrible gameplay
- Story is disjointed
Final Rating:
3/10

Hey guys,i bought the supporter pack dlc but i didn't find the ost and the added operation, where can i find it?
It's fu*king horrible. Visuals, sound, plot, animations, controls, everything. I want my 30 minutes back. Fu*k this developer. Person who got an idea to program shooting that way must stop working with games.
Idiotic story about some gnomes buying house in real world.
Oh man. Ash of War is really not a good game at all. I'm just going to give a brief rundown of the game, and you can of course decide for yourself.
Story
The story is fairly tired. Kid has a father who was a soldier. Kid thinks he can share with/understand his dad if he also becomes a soldier. Flash forward and kid is now a teen, and has become a soldier. He is then faced with the realities of war. Definitely has been done before and with much better writing. For one thing, the translations are terrible, and because of this, there is a temptation to forgive bad writing as a result, but in this case, bad writing was also poorly translated. All in all, this aspect of the game is actually the best thing Ash of War has to offer, and it is sub par at best.
Gameplay
Whereas the suspect storytelling was probably the best aspect of this game, the gameplay is certainly the worst. I've read reviews that state the gameplay never gets annoying or frustrating. That is definitely not matching up with my own experience. At its most basic, Ash of War functions as a side scrolling walking simulator. However, the controls are stiff, and even turning from right to left feels like a chore. Literally. Then you have the mini games that are designed to add some gameplay to an otherwise lacking experience. The result is plenty of frustration. The little maze mini game wasn't bad except that there is a timer for the back half of the sequence, and no indication of how long is on said timer, which definitely leads to at least one restart. Then there are the shooting mini games, which mostly consist of you in the back of a vehicle firing at enemies in other vehicles. However, the aiming mechanic is completely broken and so you have to sort of fire and hope for the best. This is made clear with the first little "shoot the cans" mini game, but made insanely frustrating during the two "chase" sequences, which also last way longer than they should.
Outside of that, you can pick up collectibles here and there. Of course.
The actual map mini game wasn't so bad though, so at least one section will be relatively frustration free.
All this doesn't even go into the slow entering and exiting animation, the fact that things often don't line up properly leading to your avatar disappearing briefly then ending up where it should have been to begin with. Also, in between acts, you are presented with little story vignettes, but again, so slow and unnecessary, and you have to manually advance each of what is typically three or four story pieces presented on pictures and such. This should definitely have simply been an add to the menu rather than something you have to sit through.
Graphics
Also not good. The devs clearly enjoyed Valiant Hearts: The Great War and were hoping to emulate this to some extent despite the setting being Afghanistan in Ash of War. However, they didn't do it well, and so most things in the game are grainy and washed out looking. It's actually not a terrible looking game, but it's also not good. There are of course occasional exceptions in the game, but yeah, overall, not stellar.
Audio
First off, the voice acting is abysmal. Not only is it a half hearted attempt at sounding somber, but the voice actor can't even pronounce a lot of the words in the script, which is weird, since they could have just done it in their native language and offered subtitles INSTEAD of offering a really bad version of English for us to sit through. The rest of the audio tracks aren't so bad, but man that main voice actor really is terrible.
Verdict
I feel Ash of War is a great example of a game people think they should enjoy, and in my opinion, this has impacted its review scores on Steam, but for me, this was an almost unbearably slow paced, poorly acted, poorly written, poorly designed game with at best, average graphics. I'd personally advise going with a game like Valiant Hearts or 11-11 Memories instead. You'll find a much deeper and enriching experience rather than this really bad ball of frustration.
If you found this review helpful and would be interested in supporting my Curator group, it would be appreciated. Cheers.

The game is more story and narrative based than interactive gameplay. Graphics are nothing to write home about, but the major drawback is the numerous and severe translation errors. That and the accents of the voice actors are extremely thick. Considering that the majority of the cast is supposed to be English speaking Americans, that is a major flaw.
This game is awesome! In my opinion it has great music and plot that get you deeper into walkthrough all the story and mini games. This is the first self game of these developers so I don’t think that we have to judge them for graphics. It’s funny. I really can’t avoid the soundtrack and I have to say that it fits amazingly into the game. Great job guys! Also want to say that junction between chapters is nice idea. It tells us what character is thinking about.
