This game is fun enough to play and the graphics are quite nice. It has one glaring problem: The game is called Meow Motors, and there are no meows in the game! Come on! It's a kitty cat racing game! Hold a microphone up to some cats! It's not that difficult!

It's a furry-cat kart racer with 10 tracks, 10 characters and 10 cars.

There is no online multiplayer, so I hope you have enough USB drives and seating around your PC. I finished it and unlocked everything in less than 5 hours, which is a bit short for the $15 price tag.

It runs BUTTERY smooth, which was actually very impressive given all the speed and mayhem that goes on in any given race or mode. There's the circuit race, strike mode where you just try to kill each-other, and drift mode where you try to rack up points doing fancy moves on the track.

-Circuit Mode needs to be turned up to hard in order for you to not leave your fellow racers in the dust.
-Strike Mode should have been in some sort of arena, as whoever's in last place gets all the weapons.
-Drift mode can suck a big one, as it's a game full of straightaways and moving obstacles.

I was having fun about 1/3 of the time with this setup.

Strangely enough, special attributes are given to the racers, not the cars. Some of the cat characters make better use of Nitro, items, get damaged less, spread more oil slick, etc. I feel like that should be attributed to the cars, not the cats, but that's just me. There's also some abilities that I don't think got translated well, as I'm not sure they are what they say. The character "Boris" ability says that his kart self-repairs, but I could not for the life of me catch this ability in action.

It's cute and cuddly and it runs like a dream, but it's just short, lacks online multiplayer and it felt poorly organized.

I'd say stick to Mario Kart/Diddy Kong Racing, guys. :(

This is a nice little game to discover :) , whilst everything seems to work rather well over all i have a few critiques:

1. It's a very fast paced, making the learning curve steeper than I feel it needs to be

2. New power-ups do not come with a explanation

3. AI speed compensation is poorly implemented.

4. Which ever Dev thought drift levels were a good idea can go and eat dirt.

Other than that quite a lot of splitscreen fun when bought during a steam sale :)

Got Meow Motors on sale back in December 2020! The race tracks , music , the gimmicks and characters are all good for a racing game. The game is fun to play. My kid and spouse loved this game a lot and the split screen mode is also a great to have !

Cute, fun and worth the price. Agree with another reviewer that despite featuring cats as drivers, there is nothing else about the game involving cats. Seems like a missed opportunity to do something unique there. Pretty standard fare here, but it's largely done well. The feel of the karts and the physics is good - something not all kart racers get quite correct.

YOU!
Yeah, you over there, play this fucking game!
Don't point and laugh at the title, I had these low expectations too but goddam this game exceeded them and made these races, even if sometimes chaotic, very fun! The drifting feels so damn satisfying & I love the strike game mode(basically kill as many as you can mode).
You may think it's another Mario Kart clone...sure, it is. But I find this one quite entertaining & cute. Also, no unfair bullshit from the AI rubberbanding to Oblivion overtaking you so hard you remain stuck in 1882(looking at you F1 RaceStars, you sinful shit of a game).
The handling model is just perfect, the ever-expanding collection of cars, cats & powerups is so cool...just get the game and you won't be disappointed!

this overall is a good game, but its also one of those titles where a lot of really good things get ruined by just a few small issues, some would take a lot of effort to fix, others wouldn't.

the contents for the most part are quite simple; you have local multiplayer quick race and a single player campaign that serves as a practice mode.
unfortunately, unlike games similar to sonic transformed racing, you can't do the single player content with friends which takes away a lot of the party appeal since we not only have nothing to progress through together (which adds a lot) but we also don't have a means to train friends up, outside of making them play the singleplayer by themselves, which is never a great prospect when all you want to do is get together and have a fun time.
overall though i'd say the game is fine, the powerups initially felt a bit aggressive, but the fact that they have no rng determining who gets what, takes away a lot of the annoyances as you can now just get what you need, adding a bit of strategy to knowing what to collect and what to drop based on your current level

in terms of its art, the game is generally fine;
everything looks fine in an ok, kid friendly kind of inoffensive way, which is something that will appeal to some and do nothing for others.
I think its all largely well put together, but very little of it really wowed me for some reason that I couldn't put my finger on.
I suppose I'm used to edgier entries in this genre like wipeout, burnout and jak x which engage me a lot more for some reason.
the characters initially feel like they have a lot of personality, but you quickly realise that they all share animations which saps away a lot of their personality and charisma and makes all the cats feel like swappable skins rather than distinct individuals, which turned out to be a rather sad discovery.

the soundtrack, for me at least, was quite bad.
I would describe it as the sort of bouncy royalty free accoustic guitar music you find in a lot of really generic commercials.
I ended up muting it and playing hard rock which honestly felt like it fit better given the frantic aggressive way the ais play against you.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
the big issue
overall, most of the issues I've mentioned up to now are things I can ignore but the major one that I can't is the boost mechanic.
a lot of games in this karting genre typically use boost systems based around doing and maintaining drifts; stuff like jak x some of the sonic racers, burnout, and a dozen other games all do this.
its a good mechanic and a lot of people use it for that reason.
the thing about that mechanic though is that it works typically by rewarding you for drifting while you're drifting which enables you to drift more, its a fun loop that feeds in on itself.
in this game, you only get the boost for exiting out of a drift and completely cancelling your lateral momentum, which prevents you from chaining together any skilful turns cause you always have to keep deliberately stopping to fill your boost bar, it's quite infuriating.
I think an easy comparison would be if in an fps made it so that you have to slowly put away your gun to collect any ammunition you get from shooting enemies; it slows down any rythem the game has which is kind of upsetting.
if this got fixed and the game was adjusted to reward you during the boost for your boost, I'd flip my recommendation around and say that its an overall good game.
but as it stands, I can't enjoy the game to its full potential with this glaring problem soiling the game's otherwise fine mechanics
Pretty mediocre but still fun kart racer.
The only thing that makes this "Meow Motors" versus any other kart racers is that your character models are cats. Nothing unique about cats is used in the game, most disappointingly being that there's not a single meowing sound effect. :(
It took me about 4 hours to play through the campaign and an extra 2 hours to finish the rest of the achievements. There's a decent amount of replayability, especially as a party game.
NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. You can play local multiplayer with 3 other irl players (4 total).
There's a barebones storyline that looks like it was made overnight in powerpoint but in a comic style.
You can race with 10 different characters (each with their own passive ability) in 10 karts (no differences) on 18 tracks. You also get 10 powerups to use. All these things are unlocked by playing through the campaign.
When racing you have an energy bar which lets you use a Nitro speed boost or lay down an oil slick. To fill this energy bar, you can do a few things: making jumps off ramps, completing a drift, or damaging other players. There's an extra bar that fills on it's own in time which lets you charge your powerup so that it's more powerful. You also have a health bar which after taking enough damage your kart will appear damaged and supposedly drive more slowly (I didn't notice a difference), taking more damage after this will destroy your kart and you'll respawn.
You play with 3 different game modes: Race (race up to 9 opponents in usually 1 to 3 laps), Strike (destroy a certain amount of opponents by damaging them with powerups or ramming them), and Drift (gain a certain amount of points by completing drifts on a track by yourself while also avoiding mines).
Overall it's good for a few hours of fun. I recommend this game, especially if it's on sale of course.
I love this game! It combines my love of cats and cars. The character designs are cute, and the cars and power-ups are cool and clever. I enjoy the different courses you can race on, and all three of the game modes are fun to play (I think drift is my favorite, although it's tricky). I am still making my way through the game, so I am excited to see what new characters will come along and what will happen next in the story. The only recommendations I can think of at this time is 1) make drifting a bit more controllable and 2) allow for online multiplayer. In the meantime though, I do enjoy getting to play local multiplayer mode and race with friends =^u^=
It's mariokart but with CATS!! Nice cat themed arcade racer. Gets tricky pretty quick, but really fun. Graphics are cute, soundtrack is good. Gameplay mechanics are standard arcade racer/mariokart style, powerups, upgrades, various cars/characters. All good stuff that unlocks the more races you win/stars you get. It's marioCATS!!
tl;dr
I haven't had this much fun with an SP kart racer in years. Well-done dev!
Easily one of the finest single-player Kart Racers on Steam, or any platform frankly. If the dev showed it a bit of love (e.g., DLC, online multiplayer, etc) it could be right up there with Mario Kart Double Dash and Sonic & SEGA All-stars Racing.
If you enjoy arcadey kart racers with Mario Kart/Sonic All-stars style of drift-mechanics, you may want to check this out.
Pro-Gamer Tip: struggling with the late-stage drifting challenges? Remember to boost while drifting to collect massive points.
note: I may update this with more details later, I just wanted to be a good Samaritan and get this review posted while the Autumn 2019 sale was still running.
I bought the game at 25% off during the winter sale.
It's a fun little racer that has some quirks
Pros:
  • has cute avatars and ok-ish cars with a limited number of color options
  • graphics are polished
  • music is catchy and fitting, can get a bit repetitive
  • no bugs where encountered
  • the game is family-friendly
Neutral:
  • The game is very much a clone of Mario Kart. A lot of things are similar, many of the weapons, the way characters turn back and wave when passing.
  • game is fairly short - you can play through the story in about 5 hours (all stars on all tracks)
  • you can play local split-screen-multiplayer (up to 4), if you have multiple controllers and a big enough screen
Cons:
[list]
  • has no mouse support at all - you have to navigate the menus with keyboard or controller
  • The game definitely isn't written with Multiplayer in mind. The AI seems to automatically adjust to the first player, leading to a "swarm" mentality. This becomes apparent as the AI stays always close to the first player, anyone falling behind will simply see noone. There also aren't any "catch-up" mechanics in multiplayer. If you fall behind, there is barely a way to come back.
  • Even though there are the strike and drift modes, the game is always set up like a race. You can not go backwards during strike or drift. The AI also doesn't really play differently. And if you select drift during multiplayer with some AI, the AI is unable to score any points, essentially only harassing the players. (I'm not even sure if the AI can drift at all.)
  • [*] The drift and strike modes aren't bad in themselves. It's just a bit weird that they make up a third of the game each, while they have a straightforward strategy each. It can get kind of repetitive.
    [list]
    Had a lot of fun with this game, just finished the career mode! Lots of fun challenges, creative courses, and overal fun driving. The controls are smooth, the characters are fun, and the powerups pretty hilarious.
    I would say this is a more fun version of Mario Kart. A certified Meowio Kart, if you will.
    Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but then again, you'd need friends for that. If you like a smooth racing game, this is the one.
    This is a fun little game. My wife and I play it together, either taking turns to complete the challenge modes (necessary to unlock new weapons and characters) or splitscreen co-op. There's a fun variety of weapons, and the cats are adorable. The downside is that, while many of the levels are visually stunning, they get a bit samey, and you have to replay them a lot of times in the challenge modes. The music tracks also can get repetitive after the 50th time.
    Rough edges aside, we've had a lot of fun with it. It takes me back to my childhood playing Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing with my neighbors. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes cats and wants a kart racer to play from time to time.
    TL;DR and EARLY ACCESS First Impressions video located at the bottom!
    --Review based on Early Access, will be updated where necessary--
    Quite possibly one of the greatest kart racers you'll find on here, but its lack of online multiplayer may be offputting. There's a strong emphasis on Meow Motors' singleplayer "career mode", where players unlock cars, characters and.... powerups. Even your items require time and energy to unlock for use in Quick Race mode, the same applying to aforementioned unlocks. The different cars are purely cosmetic, but characters have different abilities to make your life easier (Lily can make oil cost less energy to use, allowing her to give her enemies the slip more frequently; one character isn't slowed by the off-track terrain, etc.). At least all cats and carts control in the same way; each one has the nitro ability for a boost of speed, oil to cause foes to lose control and fire (which I've not yet learnt the secrets of; apparently I'm a caveman).
    The controls are floaty, but not offensively so. There's little friction on the tarmack and other terrain, so you feel more like you're gliding than putting the pedal to the metal, though the game allows you to zip across the tracks in no time at all. The game's drifting is comparable to Table Top Racing: World Tour's or Toybox Turbo's, in that you'll slide and have little control over your movements, only now you press a button and you spin wildly into walls and other hazards. That's where most of the game's difficulty comes from, rather than the three difficulty settings that share your progress (unlike Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing's career mode).
    Powerups are plenty, provided you're playing the championship mode as that's the only way you'll get them. Most of them consist of projectiles such as a homing shark missle that stops players from using weapons, a machine gun that has unpredictable range and damage, an ice beam that freezes foes and good ol' Area-of-Effect EMP charges. It's a staple of the modern kart racer; it used to be sinister circular objects, hallmarks of Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart, but now eminates from the kart in a flash of light and pain. How far we've come.
    The powerups highlight one of the game's biggest problems; it's not the thing itself that's the issue, but rather how it's implemented. Meow Motors has idea for drifting.... but doesn't give you the means to exit the drift or boost at the end. It does powerups brilliantly.... but the amount of spam that floods the screen kills a lot of the joy if you're lagging behind. There's constant stops and starts, resulting only in bursts of fun rather than a constant rush of adrenaline and awe.
    The tracks are well designed, wide enough to support 7 or 8 players abreast.... or arim (atyre? Ahubcap?), with not only lots of turns and twists but plenty of shortcuts hidden in plain sight. There's a great need for map knowledge but you unlock so many so quickly that it's hard to remember and let muscle memory take over and guide you to the nearest shortcut. Again, I have to bring up the floatiness of the controls - the karts glide so slowly rather than turn sharply that you'll miss a lot of opportunities unless you know well in advance what's coming up and prepare for it ~10 seconds earlier. The maps aren't super imaginative, with little in the way of jumps, teleportation of helter-skelter design, but they have enough hazards and turns to keep players occupied and constantly on the lookout for opponents crawling up behind.
    There's not a lot one can say say about Meow Motors; it's a typical casual racing game with the typical progression system - three stars, championship unlocks, powerups, a smooth release of cars, cats and their claws. Originally £15.49, it was good but not great, but for its new price of £11.39 it comes even more highly recommended. You'll still find the same quality for approximately the same price, but if you love kart racers too much and therapy's too expensive, this'll sate your appetite until the next one comes out.
