This was nice- it's an unassuming, fun little game and I really enjoyed it. No greater breakdown than that; just a fun little game, well worth the money.
A decent little game for the price.
True the graphics arn't brilliant but one good thing is that you can see the gear ( which is varied ) that you wear on your charachter (even down to your necklace ), and who doesn't like that.
There's a classless progression system which I actually found quite pleasing, and upgrade options for your gear which work quite well.
The dungeons themselves are a bit bland, but they do have secret walls hiding rooms with tougher monsters and better treasure. As well as rooms that have to be opened with seals ( which you assemble ) and keys that you find in the dungeons, which makes the dungeons themselves more interesting.
There's also Statues of gods which when awakened with the right offering will often reward you with a decent item.
There's different difficulty options, I personally played on Easy meleeing my way through, but on the final levels I did find myself looking through my spell options ( you find scrolls in your adventures which can be hotbarred and used indefinately depending on mana ) as the bosses did get somewhat tougher.
On exiting then restarting the game it will repopulate all the levels, you just have to be aware that if you half clear a level then quit out, then when you revisit the game it'll be full again, however this can also be seen as a good thing as it does allow you more time to get stronger by revisiting earlier levels if you wish, and the levels themselves arn't massive so are easily clearable in a single sitting.
If you play roguelikes this is a must try. Ok so the graphics aren't the best I would have loved it if he went pixel art but honestly the graphics are fine when you start playing. The game is amazing such a well done roguelike. For the price I cannot see why any roguelike player would pass on this. Underrated gem.
its too simple and easy, gets to a point you cant die, just collect/craft/ sell/ I ended up running in straight throw anything with my health not going down just killing evrything in sight. Needs to be harder
I bought this on sale for $1.25 plus tax. I'd definitely say I've gotten more than my money's worth out of it. It's a fun rogue-like dungeon crawler that gets more challenging the further into the dungeon you go. The way the mechanics work remind me heavily of the old Windows game "Castle of the Winds" and its sequel. This is a plus for me as it comes as a huge nostalgia bomb.
There are definitely some bugs that need fixing, like when the windows overlap each other to the point where you can't click on what you need in the inventory/crafting/merchant screens. But this is not a game breaking issue and is easily fixed by closing all the inventory screens and opening them again. I would love a "sort all" mechanic for your inventory and backpack as it can be pretty cumbersome to move items around one at a time. And the gems don't stack, which would've been nice.
That said, it's a fun game and a good way to pass the time if you like uncomplicated rpgs. The monsters range from your generic rats and zombies to the really interesting Wawel Dragon boss which had an unique mechanic you need to utilize to defeat it. Overall enjoyable, and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fun little dungeon crawler.
I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. It's cheap, fun, simple & quick but with enough variety & depth that you could enjoy a few run-throughs playing with builds. Bulk crafting would be a welcome addition.
But mainly I just wanted to give it another thumbs-up.
Simple, fun. Interface is a bit clunky, but still fairly addictive!

A little gem that I met in the store! A playable roguelike without reading eighty-page guides to go down a few levels. The crafting that I hate in all the games, here is represented in the best and simplest way. There is no recipe for every object but with a few ingredients you can transmute objects into others or improve them, really brilliant! You can save between games. The levels are small and simple and I hope they are developed further. For the cost of a breakfast at the bar you will have a well done fast roguelike. Recommended!
Played for three hours and got to level eight. I have the setting on permadeath and now I take my time to use scrolls and potions. This game is just like old school dungeon crawlers in graphics, but it has a few more layers, ie. crafting and more I probably have not unlocked yet. I am enjoying it so far, but I was not expecting anything ground breaking. I did not run into any bugs and that was refreshing. For the price this is a great little time killer.
Sure, Once upon a Dungeon is an easy recommend for a fun home-baked roguelike that actually has some really neat ideas going on that work quite well. Is it rough around the edges? Heck yeah - right down to the mixed capitalization scheme of the title. Some of the font is stretched, the artwork is hardly eye candy, there is a bit of an input delay, and the mixed keyboard/mouse requirement is not exactly my favorite control scheme for a classic-styled roguelike. But believe it or not, the game is quite fun and dare I say even a bit fresh for how easy this is to get into. The crafting system is great, and really adds a nice layer of strategy. Encrusting weapons, armor, and jewelry with gems is nice and feels potent. Leveling up feels good and while you won't be wading through a never-ending list of skills - what is here is solid.
This title is in the same ballpark as The Curse Of Yendor in that it's a subgenre of the classic roguelike. They are intentionally smaller in scope, but play around with some neat mechanics. Once upon a Dungeon has a strong one-more-run effect, and every run I've learned new ways to use things at my disposal to get further. From setting traps to crafting better weapons to encrusting gear with gems to finding secret rooms.
Pros:
+Small scope classic style roguelike that surely brings some neat ideas to the table that work well
+Strong one-more-run effect once you begin to understand how everything works
+Good coffee break game (but you can't hold a cup of coffee because you need both hands, sadly)
+Lots of layers of strategy
+Quite challenging
+Price-point is fair
+I appreciate the classless 'develope your hero how you want to through play' approach
Cons:
-Rough edges everywhere
-Stretched fonts complete with typos and awkward descriptions (I am certain the creator is a non-native English speaker)
-The dungeon layouts are as boring as it gets

Strongly recommended! A simple-looking yet deep and enjoyable turn-based dungeon crawler that will very likely be worth your purchase. Don't let the minimalistic graphics turn you away - Once upon a Dungeon's character progression, inventory management and crafting mechanics offer a lot of room for playstyle variety, and figuring out how to beat bosses can be tactically intriguing. The "Easy" difficulty setting will allow you to enjoy exploring with minimal frustration. The game is being updated regularly, and I'm looking forward to how it evolves.
Easy to get and fun to play roguelike . You can choose to play it without permadeath- good thing for casual and lame gamers like myself. Good crafting system. Graphics are very basic but clean and functional. When you wear a helmet or a mail, you can see it -not very usual in this genre.
Perhaps this is not a game for hardcore roguelikers with a lot of commands and stats but it is enough depth for old school RPGs lovers.
