zzzzzzzz I just... I just don't like base building, but it is a good game. Great sound effect work, more intriguing than Minecraft anyway. Not Terraria.
So fun that I literally had to take a lengthy detox from this game because I was taking extended bathroom breaks at work just to play it on my phone. My very first time playing it was a little bit confusing due to the lack of a tutorial, but I actually grew to appreciate that aspect. I really love that I can tweak the availability of resources, day/night length and number of particular kinds of monsters--the FREAKING walking trees, in particular, I'm grateful to be able to cut down on lol.
This is a great game, but I recommend getting Don't Starve Together instead.
If you want to play Hamlet you'll need this; for anything else imo DST is just a better version, even playing alone.
This is one of those games that stands the test of time. The mechanics are deceptively simple, while still allowing for a very complicated set of interactions between the player, the items in the world, and the mobs and playing environment. As you develop your skill in the game world, you will still find new challenges available. It's easy to get immersed in the game's lore, as well, which adds a greater sense of fascination of the world you're working in.
I first played this game twelve years ago, about the time that the Reign of Giants DLC was being released. Since then, I've come to love the other game worlds, as well, with Shipwrecked being my favorite by far. I also find myself frequently coming back to Don't Starve, even though other worlds may be flashier or have more photorealistic detail, the challenge, the complexity, and the immersion I can get with Don't Starve is fantastic. Kudos to Klei for a superb game!
the game is called don't starve but you never starve and die
you only die in search of food
and you have to keep watching for your character sanity and YOUR sanity
i have so much to complain about but it's the fun part that it's hard to play
no lgbtq references so far 10/10 .
It is a great game with a lot of content and unique art style. The game don't tell you what you need to do, you need to explore everything around you and figure out how things work. The game is really hard (at least in my perspective), it takes too much time to be good at the game, this is the game that I most felt that survival experience by far. If you are a player that likes to learn games slowly by trying I think you will love this game.
You either love this game or hate it. I fall into the unlucky group and don't really like it. Unfortunately the lack of direction this game gives is kinda irksome, I spent a good 30 minutes wandering for gold, not really knowing what I was looking for until I searched it up. And the idea of needing to search something up in a game to progress is really unappealing in my eyes.
Buy the game and test it out. Personally, I would only get it when it's on sale as it's a couple of bucks and that's a steal regardless.
TLDR: If you dislike Terraria, you're going to dislike Don't Starve.
Amazing game, problem starts when you are lost, wet and need to eat rotten food, and then think about playing this game
I am really not a fan of games that don't tell you how to play first. I'm ok with minimal direction, but this game is more complicated than it should be, when it gives you no idea of what to do. It's complicated enough to have several button choices and a huge list of things to do, but nothing is highlighted to give any kind of idea of what you can or cannot do. There are monsters around, but no info on how to heal or fight back. You have to move around and collect materials, but for what? The Binding of Isaac and Dark Souls have more "how to play" than this. I understand there are gamers that enjoy this sort of thing and power to them. I'm not one of them.
I wanted to like everything about this game's style, but the permadeath combined with 8bit combat is too much.
I really do enjoy how it's never really the same game during each play through.
Some people may not like games where the environment changes on character death, but I enjoy how you have to adapt your strategy for survival because of resource availability changes.
It's makes the game fun, frustrating (in a good way), interesting, and exciting.
When this indie title debuted in 2013, it was a remarkable achievement that stood out within its genre, offering a fresh and engaging experience. However, revisiting it in the present day, absent the influence of nostalgia, reveals a work that now feels modest in scope and execution. While I continue to hold a sincere appreciation for what it once represented, the game's mechanics are elementary, its design is restrained, and its overall depth is limited. Upon completion, one is left with the impression that it lacks substantial content or meaningful progression. Nevertheless, its significance should not be understated, as it served as a foundational step in Klei’s creative trajectory, ultimately leading to the development of far more sophisticated and compelling titles such as Oxygen Not Included and Griftlands. Although I still encourage others to experience it, particularly those interested in the evolution of independent game development, it is best approached with tempered expectations, as it falls short of delivering a truly lasting or transformative experience.
Don't Starve is a beautifully dark survival game with a unique Tim Burton-esque art style and a haunting atmosphere that keeps you constantly on edge. The core gameplay loop—gather, craft, explore, survive—is brutally unforgiving but incredibly rewarding. While the solo experience remains strong, the game has evolved significantly over the years with frequent updates, mod support and great community. However, new players may find the learning curve steep, and some older mechanics could feel a bit dated.
For reasons I can no longer recall, I bought Don't Starve Together shortly after buying this game, so I didn't end up playing this game all that much, as I chose to play with friends instead. However, I decided to revisit this game again recently to see how they compare, and after playing it a bit, I just can't recommend this game when the multiplayer version exists.
This game is very similar in many ways to the multiplayer version. Much like the multiplayer version, the game simply dumps you out into a world and lets you try to figure out how to survive without explaining anything. The world is fairly unique and interesting, but like the multiplayer version, this game also has permadeath, and unlike the multiplayer version, there's no settings to make this easier, so the game basically expects you to repeatedly die to things you had no way to see coming to slowly learn over time. This may be a fun gameplay loop for some, but I unfortunately just found this tedious and frustrating. It's even more frustrating when things you've learned in the multiplayer version don't apply quite the same, as you're never quite sure if the things you've learned in one game will apply in the other, and this game is also missing some quality of life features that have made the multiplayer version more approachable as well (such as the compendium). This game also doesn't really seem to be getting updated anymore either, while the multiplayer version is still getting frequent updates.
The only thing this game seems to have over the multiplayer version is the existence of story content, which is pretty cool, as I've always missed this when playing the multiplayer version. Unfortunately, the story content in this game still seems pretty sparse, and it appears to primarily found in something called Adventure Mode, where you're tasked with entering five separate brand new worlds that are modified to be even more challenging. This was pretty disappointing for me, as I was looking forwards to getting lore which was missing from the multiplayer version, but starting over in a brand new (and harder) world five times in a row without dying once was just too much to ask when I was already having a hard time justifying spending time in this game when the multiplayer version exists.
The game does still have the extremely good, iconic art style that the series is known for, and I didn't encounter any bugs while playing this game.
TL;DR This survival game has a great art style, runs well, and has a unique world to explore. However, the multiplayer version of this game Don't Starve Together is simply better, as it allows you to play with friends, has quality of life features that are missing from this game, and is still getting updates, which doesn't appear to be the case for this game. The story content is the only thing this game has that the multiplayer version doesn't, but it's far too sparse and the game requires a lot of work to reach it, so if you're really interested in this game, I'd highly recommend looking at Don't Starve Together instead.
really fun slow paced game about surviving once you start playing
will not recommend if you like fast paced games
tldr - fun, easy, funny, no brainer
Really depends on what type of games you like. Don't Starve is a survival game, depending on how fast you are the game will be boring for a while. It's decently easy to die, so it makes the game difficult. Beautiful art style, but it gets very boring after a while. It's mostly the same with not too much to do, but again, it's a survival game rather than sandbox. If you're looking for a challenging, 1 life, grindy survival game then this is perfect. If you dislike slow games or grinding then I do not recommend it. I
Something about Don't Starve just tickles all the right spots in my brain. It's easily, and by far the game I've spent the most hours on. I've enjoyed every moment of it and highly recommend it to all.
it does the whole "survival crafting" thing really well. its very easy to understand and gives you clear goals. its not an easy game, but it's easy to progress because you generally know to do. it gives the game a good balance. the setting is also very imaginative and fun to explore.
Still fun, still challenging, very replayable
I will literally go on a 40 day run and them some shit called the kerfifflenoggin will one shot me and I die
Had it pirated, liked it so much I felt bad and got it, I don't regret pirating, and I don't regret buying to get a game I already had, I like this game.
I found this game all the way back when it first released & watched a ton of videos about it. Most notable would be the animated Jacksepticeye video about this game. My only regret was not getting this game sooner because it might just be my favourite survival game of all time.
Love this game. I've got over 1000hrs in and I don't regret it. Great for goals or just mindlessly creating your own domain. Amazing sounds for each of the characters and character design in general. Highly recommend.
I don't play this game much, I bought it out of spite after all.
i liked it, I also suggest to play Don't Starve Together which is more complete
Don't let the title fool you: starvation is the least of your worries when playing this uncompromising game. The game will always find a way to screw you over, but it surely has its charm. I totally recommend it.
Don't Starve, according to its overwhelmingly positive reviews, is a great game. If you think you'd like it, you probably will.
Unfortunately, I didn't.
Don't Starve is a survival crafter with no tutorial and no explanation. This fits the other-world horror theme of how you suddenly found yourself in this strange and confusing universe. I can appreciate the lack of handholding. Is that red or green mushroom going to heal you or hurt you? One way to find out!
When I say no explanation, I mean no explanation. You do not see how much damage your axe does, or how effective your armor is. I found multiple headgears. What do they do? Who knows! Just pay attention and maybe you'll find out!
When you die, you start over completely. The only progress you make is the knowledge you take with you.
(Hopefully that mushroom didn't finish you off!)
While it's a rare take on crafter games to be so unforgiving, I can get behind it. I enjoy a good challenge and mystery.
Except... man, oh man, is it going to feel repetitive going through your lessons.
If your game is going to force players to go through the same motions over and over and over again, you better make sure that experience feels smooth. And that is really the sin of the game. Everything feels clunky.
Combat? Clunky. You'll have to "kite" all your enemies. Stab, run back, stab, run back, stab, run back. Very rote.
Inventory management? Clunky.
It all just feels like... "What's the point?"
The theme did not sufficiently carry the day.
scratches the survival crafting itch like no the game can
Amazing game with even better DLCs.
World is fun to explore, you get satisfaction from getting better and better at the game, and it's really different from DST, so you should get it even if you played a lot of DST (I recommend especially Hamlet DLC) :)
One of my favorite games. This is what introduced me to survival craft - it's a classic and rightly so. Love the replayability and DLCs
Me encanta, es un juego que deja enganchado realmente, si tienes tiempo libre lo recomiendo
Liked it so far pretty much, lovely art style, pretty hard but a fun hard, lot to learn!
Buggy Sandbox always ends with power over-draw by Windows Problem Reporting long after game has frozen, requiring hard reboot.
Very very difficult if you're going in blind. It's fun though; very enjoyable and has nice progression.
I bought this game because it was on sale, and it totally exceeded my expectation-i'ts so good! I absolutely love it!
load up game right after download, make torch, use torch when night come, sett stick on fire, immedietly scramble as you die in picthblackness. 10 out of 10 would die again.
Don’t Starve (and later Don't Starve Together) is one of the first games my best friends (meanwhile husband) and I ever played together, so it holds a special little place in my heart by default. ♥
On top and aside of the sentimental value, it really is just an amazing game.
A gloomy, gothic survival game where everything wants to eat you, haunt you, or drive you insane, but somehow it still manages to be charming.
Don’t Starve Together is the multiplayer version of Don’t Starve, retaining the same core survival mechanics, but with added emphasis on cooperation and shared survival. While Don’t Starve focuses on single-player, where you manage resources, hunger, and sanity alone, Don’t Starve Together allows you to team up with others to tackle the game's challenges.
With its papercut art style, creepy sound design, and ever-expanding world of strange flora, fauna, and seasonal chaos, there’s always something new to discover (or shit your pants about, it’s 50/50 really). Whether you're cosily huddled around a fire on the first night or running away from shadow monsters while desperately collecting flowers to keep your sanity, it’s the kind of game you keep playing. The game might be called Don’t Starve, but starving is the least of your problems. Trust me.
I'll be honest: I am terrible at this game. I die a lot. But it’s the kind of dying that feels weirdly fun, like you earned it. Deserved it. Would like to do it again. There's just something magical about scrambling through the wilderness with friends, helping each other, sharing berries, and screaming about hounds - or just going the complete opposide way, losing each other and then dying apart together.
i really enjoy this game and the rather complex gameplay is what i love. i personally play with mods because i like seeing ym fav character
i mean its an good and old game but its boring as hell, also i have problems with surviving a night
It's not really good but you can enjoy the game for what it already is.
The game is very simple: survive and find a way home.
I do love how there are so many characters to unlock. Just...SO MUCH WALKING!
very comfy game, cool lore, and awesome characters
I Don’t Know What I’m Doing and That’s Why I Love It! Nyaa~
I have no idea what I’m doing 90% of the time.
The game told me not to starve and I said, “Okay!”
Then I starved.
Then I got chased by tree monsters.
Then I got punched by a pig.
Then I started a war between pigs, spiders, and what I think were sea gremlins with legs??
And I loved every second of it, nyaaa~
There's something magical about throwing random creatures into a blender of violence and running away with your pockets full of monster meat. Sometimes I build a base. Sometimes it burns down. Sometimes I forget where it is entirely.
The art is creepy-cute, the music sounds like it came from a haunted accordion, and the game is never really clear on what’s happening—just like my life.
Would I recommend it?
Yes.
Do I know how to survive past Day 12?
Absolutely not.
10/10 would cause another pig-spider-merfolk war just to watch it unfold with popcorn and existential dread.

Feral, confused, and emotionally attached to a science machine
Great game with fantastic art and rich survival mechanics. I'm likely just bad nowadays, but I found the gameplay rather routine—it's still good though.
I don't like games where I feel like I'm forced to do bad things. The humanoid pigs in the game are neutral and can speak. There's really not justification to kill them, but many crafting recipes require items obtained by killing the pig people or destroying their houses.
My other complaint about the game is that it is extremely unforgiving when learning. I feel like several of my deaths were just because it was the first time I encountered a new monster, event, food, etc. I know I could brute force my way through by playing and dying lots of times, but I would have to invest far too much time learning that way. One way to address this issue at least with foods would be to clearly explain whether or not a food is going to hurt the character (e.g., +10 hunger, -10 health).
My third issue is that it's not clear how much damage weapons are doing. It's hard to tell if one item is better or worse than another.
Inventory management is a pain. If I'm in my base I should have access to all my items in all nearby chests for crafting rather than constantly digging through different chests.
perfect game: perfect atmosphere, perfect design, perfect realism.
i've been playing for years and it's always a fun challenge! the art style and sound design is absolutely delightful.
This game is great, I had 300 hours on Don't Starve Together before I first played it, it's an awesome experience for me since so much of my time in DST was spent playing alone. I did not play it with any DLCs enabled and my expectations were that I'd start playing with RoG after I survive through the winter, I ended up building a lot of cool stuff and refined my base a lot. It really made me a lot more creative to not have a lot of bosses/places to explore.
Adventure mode was really fun and as an experienced don't starve player I managed to beat it with only a single death, it is really worth your time and I recommend playing it once you wish to not play on your world no longer!
For me, it might be time for reign of giants so see you later!
It's not just Don't Starve it's:
-Don't go insane
-Don't starve (its in the name)
-Don't let all the monsters trying to kill you kill you
-Don't die to your inner demons
-Don't die to the night
And more 10/10
Iconic art style
interesting creepy-crawlies
the SECOND you think you're all set and can relax, it throws something new at you for you to account for and it's... it's as rewarding as it is frustrating to play
