Classic turn based strategy.
I'm a devoted fan of the original X-COM (and reboot) series of games. While the original games were among my favorites back in the day, I never heard about this third installment until modern times. I got this game in a bundle with the other titles, and twice I’ve tried to give it a shot, but I can’t get engaged with the concept.
For sure, it might be unfair to review a 1990s game in 2024, but while I just spent a few dozen hours revisiting the two original turn-based games, the RTS approach didn’t convince me—this is really not what we nowadays call “an X-COM game.”
So let’s make a quick recap: in the first game, we are invaded from Mars; we fight and win against the invasion, only to wait 40 years until an underwater menace emerges. In the third installment, the idea of playing on a smaller, city-level scale was interesting (and perhaps it influenced the development of XCOM: Chimera Squad), but they should never have dropped the turn-based strategy approach.
While I can also enjoy RTS games, X-COM: Apocalypse is really not a straightforward game that anyone can pick up and enjoy. I could not recommend this game, even for X-COM devoted fans.
it is from 1997.
However, the dosbox version works on modern PCs aside from occasional no-cd crash.
very good.
Owned it since 2000, play it again every few years
This is a gem of a game different from all the other x-com, the real-time battle is my favorite gameplay and is similar to UFO series
Faction dynamics, raid cult of syirus for cash is a needed step on higher difficulty
The weekly progression of aliens as you struggle with base-building research, equipping agents, and replacing agents.
Body armour available at the start is good to keep a soldier alive thru one hit need step for a future that already repelled an alien invasion once.
i have no clue whats happening but the music and trippy visuals makes it all worth it
A bit buggy, but not on a "Bethesda" level. Just save regularly, and all's good.
