If you enjoy side-scrollers, I absolutely recommend this game. Hands down one of the cutest and most fun 2D games I've played. It made me feel like a kid again playing Super Mario or Mega Man X.

The art style and animations are adorable. The music is off the charts fun, there were plenty of times when I couldn't help but sort of dance along, and I'll even listen to the soundtrack sometimes when I'm not playing. The game is relatively easy and you can become slightly OP as you progress. The first boss can be kind of a pain point if you don't have food in your inventory to restore health. Other than those balancing notes, this game is incredible. There are metroidvania elements in the sense that you will revisit old levels after obtaining a new upgrade to unlock more exploration. I've read some reviews that say the backtracking got old, but I didn't feel that way.

The Ultimate Edition includes the DLC, which I was looking forward to. I thoroughly enjoyed replaying the campaign as the villain in Pirate Queen's Quest. The next one, Friends to the End, had some neat ideas, but I didn't end up finishing it. Might revisit this title at some point to finish the DLCs, I'm curious about Ninja mode for sure.

Definitely recommend the base game and the first DLC, 100%.

If I had to describe Shantae: Half-Genie Hero in one word, it would be joy. This game isn’t just one of my favorites—it’s a comfort, a celebration of everything I love about gaming. From the moment I stepped into its vibrant, hand-drawn world, I was hooked.
First, let’s talk about the art. The visuals are absolutely stunning. Every character, every enemy, every little detail bursts with life and personality. Shantae herself is so charming, it’s impossible not to root for her. Whether she’s dancing to transform into a monkey, an elephant, or a freaking mermaid, every moment feels playful and creative.
The gameplay? Pure magic. It’s the perfect blend of platforming, exploration, and combat. There’s something so satisfying about unlocking new abilities and revisiting earlier levels to discover hidden secrets. Each stage feels distinct, full of surprises and brimming with personality. And the bosses? Oh, they’re as quirky and memorable as the rest of the game.
But what really pulls me in is the soul of this game. It’s funny, lighthearted, and endlessly charming. The dialogue always makes me smile, and the characters feel like old friends—Risky Boots is the kind of villain you secretly adore, and Rottytops is the zombie BFF you never knew you needed.
And the music—oh, the music. Jake Kaufman’s soundtrack is pure ear candy. Whether it’s the adrenaline-pumping beats of a boss battle or the breezy, tropical vibes of a stage theme, every track is a bop. I still find myself humming "Dance Through the Danger" when I least expect it.

I can't tell if this is supposed to be a kids game or an adult game. The art style is so cutesy and the characters talk like it's a dora show. So then why does the mermaid boss have such big gaboinkers?

Even though I miss the gorgeous pixel art from previous titles, I can't deny this looks all kinds of beautiful. The extra modes are awesome and as a bad girl enjoyer, I very much appreciate being able to play as Risky and Rotty.
This is a strong contender for best game in the series so far.

So I'm playing the Shantae games in order for the first time and i've played like two hours of this one, the third of the series. Here are my thought on it :

For introduction :
- First of all this is a Shantae game, it's still a more than decent 2d platformer, the only reason why I don't recommend it is because it is to my opinion way worse than playing any of the previous game (I haven't tried seven sirens yet so I don't know about that one).

- The graphisms and music are awesome and in no way part of the problem, the whole soundtrack is a bop

My problems with the game :
- I absolutely loved the first two games because of the fluid playstyle, the unique characters and the changes in mechanic from the first to the seconds, and they toned all of that down

- Shantae is now somehow slower and heavier, making her feel more like a semitruck than the agile dancer she is supposed to be

- You start the game with near to no health and a lot of platforming to do, so dying is more common than before and often feels like a big setback on the long plateforming portion you're currently in

- The characters' personalities doesn't really show (at least in the first fifth of the game as far as I can tell), Bolo gets a "goofy guy" developement, Skye becomes the regular quick travel NPC, the Mayor is now just irritating....

- The core mechanic of dances is just a recycling of the first, with a lot of extra dances so it doesn't feel as old but it still doesn't feel "new"

Had some good things about it. Started off strong but then in made the mistake of making you repeat level playthroughs to perform egg hunts in order to progress. Classic time padding. You can do that in side quests, but not in the main quest. It's just bad design. I spent too much time wandering aimlessly until I turned to a walkthrough,

I loved the cuteness of the main character and transformations. But the game crashed and burned with the classic WTFDIGN (where TF do I go now?)
The music was great but then became annoying after aimlessly wandering about.

I'd give it a B-. A basic ability progression platformer that's cute.
Some people have the patience to scoure levels for secrets, not me.

It's just fun. I'm glad I purchased this. It's a shorter game (I finished it in about 9.5 hours, and I spent a lot of time exploring and re-tracing my steps to achieve 100% completion). But it's very enjoyable and fun to play, even if a tad repetitive at times. Using the transformations to get through the levels and exploring to find hidden areas and items is what this game's all about. With a lot of cute factor and good-hearted humor. This was my first Shantae game. I'll probably picked up the next one soon!

there are a few things i want to say about this, but i'll summarize it by saying this is the first shantae game that i'm confident i'm not going to replay.

firstly: game structure. half-genie hero feels very confused, like it doesn't know if it wants to be a level based platformer or a metroidvania, and it fails miserably at being either of them. the game has about 6 levels, not including the finale, and requires you to return to them frequently as you unlock new abilities. if you're unfamiliar with shantae, the franchise's main gimmick is your "dances", which let you transform into a number of creatures with abilities that expand your platforming possibilities, which usually feels quite natural as you're required to backtrack through familiar areas and notice obstacles that you now know how to overcome. this is completely lost in half-genie hero, since you end up replaying levels with the sole intent of finding something, then quitting the level once you do to go use what you found in a different level. a lot of necessary items are hidden in some very unintuitive locations, so you end up replaying the same 6 levels over and over hoping you find something that helps you progress somewhere else.

second: unnecessary abilities. the amount of different dances you can unlock is absurd and just overcomplicates things. risky's revenge had 3 transformations, half-genie hero has a total of 12 slots, with 8 that you can collect and more that you can swap out of the 4 remaining slots. risky's revenge had the mermaid for water travel, the monkey for climbing walls, and the elephant for breaking things. half-genie hero has the mermaid for omnidirectional water travel and the crab for walking in the water, the harpy for flying and the bat for exclusively horizontal flying, the monkey for wall climbing and the spider for ceiling climbing, the elephant for breaking walls, and the mouse for special mini-mazes (which is the only good addition imo). half of these aren't even remotely necessary and just make the game more confusing than it needs to be. you really don't need two separate transformations for water travel, and the spider and bat are made completely irrelevant by the existence of the harpy. and this doesn't even account for all the extra transformations, which are so many levels of unnecessary, but i've talked about this part enough.

third: visuals. this part is probably super biased but this is, in my opinion, the least visually appealing shantae game. that might just be because i love the pixel art in the previous games, but i also feel like this style is just utterly charmless. everything's been turned into this weird, overly cutesy, uncomfortably jiggly mess, and it's all in an awkward mix of puppet animation with little chopped up bits of hand animation in between. all the characters and a lot of their classic animations have been translated into this new style, but it loses all of its stylistic charm. the previous games' pixel animation was smooth and incredibly satisfying to watch, but this retains absolutely none of that. the game has a concept art gallery that shows a lot of interesting and incredibly expressive character art, which makes me think the game was initially planned to be hand drawn, but what it ended up as is so much more disappointing.

fourth: story. this definitely wasn't a game i went into expecting a masterpiece of a story, but i was expecting a story. but this game doesn't have one until you reach the finale. everything before that is just a bunch of narrative fetch quests, getting pieces for uncle mimic's latest gadget, with no greater threat, purpose, or any other narrative elements at play. the sliver of story you get during the finale isn't even remotely interesting, and has absolutely no setup to make it feel like a satisfying turn. there was one minor story element i thought was interesting enough that they frankly could've built the entire game around it and had it be exponentially more interesting, but they unfortunately discarded it with a one off villain.

fifth: balancing. it doesn't take long at all for health to become a complete non-issue as you collect more heart holders than you need and the enemies' damage stays so low as to be completely insignificant, and by the time i reached the finale i also had a healing dance and an item that gives me infinite magic. for some reason. to say this is overkill would be an understatement. dying would be a challenge with all this. i died exactly once throughout the whole game. eventually you realize nothing can hurt you, and fighting the enemies just becomes unnecessary. you can just run past and through them with no consequence. healing that damage up isn't even an issue, since enemies drop a ton of hearts and occasionally health restoring items.

lastly: so, so many bad game design choices. i'd be typing for a good while if i wanted to get everything out, but to put it simply, there is so little effort put into making this game fun. a lot of it is just frustrating, and the parts that aren't are just unremarkable. do yourself a favor and just go play pirate's curse, please, i beg you
