Super underrated gem. It is amazing. The world and vibes are my favorite I have ever seen from a post apocalypse. And the gameplay is super fun, especially in the late game where you have an established kit and synergy. It has a few flaws, like being a bit buggy, but its strengths more than make up for it.
I would also highly recommend the dlc, it adds good post game content and the final encounter of the dlc is one of the most fun encounters in the game.
I played the demo, the ambience fitted me, and combat seemed fair. It is not. Two hours in you are already fighting three enemies with double your life points, one of them being a doctor that will revive downed enemies, when a shaman appears out of nowhere and calles three more enemies.
The most annoying mechanics is that you can shoot or move, but enemies can shoot and move.
I should have read more reviews before buying it, as it is plainly stated that difficulty becomes immediately too much.

This game feels unfinished. Although released in 2024 it feels like an early release version. Simple elements are missing, such as the ability to use mutant powers outside combat (like leap). Every few scenarios an item can't be picked up even though I'm standing on it and swapping between characters, or a character gets struck somewhere, usually on a ladder. There is very little story line until the end when cut scenes suddenly multiply ten fold.
I chose 'Easy' mode 'for beginners' because I play games to chill for a bit, but the game play was supper challenging to get started and no 'how to play' guidance was given. Had I not been experienced with Xcom style combat, I probably would have quit after the first fight (or sooner). By the end I was overpowered and combat was easy, although it was still essential to be super sneaky so the entire map didn't attack all at once. That's when game play became very repetitive.
It lacked a local area map and would benefit for completed zones being marked up on the main map.
The comedy elements were great and I enjoyed the concept.
In stage 2 the game felt much more finished with the introduction of new elements and a new hero, although unfortunately the hero was unplayable until they caught up in experience.
A bit mixed overall. I enjoyed it but it definitely could have been better.

Quick summary for those who don't want to read all of this, this game has some very annoying and difficult mechanics than can feel compleatly unfair, there is limited ways to play the game and it often feels a bit restricted, however if you enjoy games where you have little resources and are in situations that are just plain unbalanced than this is the game for you. However if you are more casual player I recommend watching a lets play and reading other reviews, as this game has way too many things for me to talk about (I was 6k characters over word limit)
Sweet game, challenging enough for pro ttrpg and turn based rpg veterans on the more challenging difficulties, but easy enough for newbies to get into the genre. Amazing story and a well structured advancement system, just wish leveling was a little more consistent when adding new members to the team later on in the game.
I enjoyed the art design and gameplay. I played it on easy and it was still challenging enough to have to reload saves.
Great game, extra funny if your swedish but i dont know how non swedish speakers react to all the swedish signs. Could use more DLC and more skills on the charachters.
Overall I think I can't recommend this except at a really steep discount.
Pro:
- The gameplay is good, I felt the fights were tactical and a good challenge, and it was fun to unpick each map enemy by enemy.
- The characters are interesting enough, and the worldbuilding is truly great.
Con:
- Much too little flexibility, only a few set characters with small skilltrees, limited upgrades and very few resource types. Leaves the only part of the game the fundamental loop of new map, scout, pick off, next map. Even a few more upgrades or better loot would have been interesting.
- Bad and unoptimised controls for PC - slow moving characters that get stuck easily in wasd controls, menus that you have to click through (eg weapon swapping was very annoying), everything having a big hotkey button making it clear it's designed for console, key remapping working poorly. UI just feels bad and annoying.
- Squad management very light weight and can't respec even at a cost meaning if you don't take the double shot talents early you could be very badly punished and basically unable to complete things via stealth. I don't expect free respecs but I do expect to be able to change a decision if it's going to cripple my playthrough early on.
Overall I don't understand why this had such great reviews from major news outlets. I found the game engaging and satisfying but a struggle to actually play, which meant overall I didn't want to spend more time with it. All the pieces were there and if they just improved character movement speed and UI I think I could have stuck it out and enjoyed it more.

Played on Normal (easiest difficulty), but at some point "exploration" just became running in circles on location to find old weapons\junk\some clothes to wear and every battle is drag too long with too little tactic, because bullet sponge enemies rushes you in ridiculous numbers even if you kill maximum amount of them by stealth approach

All in all, this might have been decent 10-15 years ago, but compared to games like JAG 3, its just junk.
I got it on sale for $10, and am doubtful I'll get my money's worth.
Honestly seemed inferior to the likes of XCom, both regarding gameplay and the story.
Could have been an excellent game but the combat is so ridiculously impossible even on easy setting. Outnumbered 2-3:1 against enemies with 5 times the hit points. Just ruins the whole experience,
the game is great overall and I like playing it!
I will say tho, after playing some time I have noticed some stuff that could be better or improved on.
1) it feels unbalanced. in terms of loot and scrapes. when you find a gun you can't trade it for more scrapes and guns you find after fighting dose not value to the effort and items you need cost too much scrapes. fighting the enemies is sometimes a bit challenging, the game wants you to do more stealth, to pick off the bad guys on by one. But I find myself doing the tact over and over. Even if I am two level above the NPCs I don't seem to be doing any more damages than before Even with better weapons.
2) you can only have 3 characters at one time. this isn't good because the game has some much dialogue so your gotta miss out on what one character says about something at that time. I wish they only kept it to only 3 characters or let me use them all at once since that would give me a better chance at fighting every enemies on the map in one go if I want that play style.
3) you will find yourself going back to either the main base to gear up and going back to the same map, because you can't fight the enemy just yet or your checking to see if you miss any scrapes that you need because scrapes are limited.
overall the environment is amazing, story (so far for me) is great. I love all the characters and their personally. This is my second run of the game I have not completed my first but I came back to it. I think I got this on sale, so get it on sale. Once I've complete the game I am planning on getting the DLC for the fun. I want to try out the hardcore mode on this and they online.
i honestly thought this was longer. i got about 20 hours of real gameplay in one run and that was grinding out a few achievements too.... the ai is super duper hard, you have to use stealth and also tactically place your units by separating team and use your hog as a tank with invulnerable. you will manage to get out of the most extreme fights with a few bars left and without burning a med-kit during combat.
6.5/10. would rate it higher if it had more content, even the dlc is super short.

Completely Unplayable. Cannot get sound or subtitles to work after three hours of troubleshooting using everything I could find online. Devs have completely abandoned this title. Sucks, because this is the favorite TTRPG I have ever played. Just terrible
Sneak around map, look for shiny bits of loot without making noise, make noise and every enemy on map heads your way. Take shiny bits home and trade for stuff, hopefully stuff traders have first aid kits because that's the only way to get healed. Repeat.
Do you hate well-balanced battles and carefully scaled mission difficulty? If you answered yes, then BOY HOWDY is this game for you. Real talk: it's really a shame that this game is too difficult to enjoy the quirky characters and amazing, lore-rich settings.
Great tactics games. Only downside I would say is there is only 5 ratios of a chance to hit (0, 25, 50, 75, 100). There could be more dialing in on that but the adventure, story, transition from exploring into combat was very enjoyable. Hope they come out with more DLC, will definitely play!
Noice story, noice execution.
game takes forever to do anything, not that it doesnt run well its default speed for everything is just slow, just shot a guy and killed him?? best go build an ark if your lucky he'll be on the ground when you get back. camera controls are slow as fuck and janky as hell and on occasion gets stuck while in combat. nope you dont get to see your guy and stuff around him cause the action cam got frozen on the bad guy.
Want your guy to hide against the tree? best quadruple check hes in the right spot cause they like hide on whatever side they damn well please, i've had had to restart fights multiple times cause i didn't notice birdbrain dux decided he wanted to hide on the wrong side of the tree and get himself shot in the face.
save your money and get something else.
An amazing game ! A tactical game where tactics actually work. I recommend it to anyone playing the actual TTRPG from Free League - the game has been ported elegantly to a VG environment and the atmosphere can be very inspiring.
Writing this in 1 Dec. 2024 as going back in to the game world, it's a really good game.
Would have been nice to be able to sell off extra gear / loot but overall a very solid game excellent for those who enjoy turn based strategy games.

However, this can make the game feel repetitive or overly easy, as you can clear some zones without much challenge. Shot accuracy is forgiving; a 75% chance almost always hits, and even a 50% chance rarely misses. The developers have also simplified combat planning by indicating during movement whether it will trigger additional enemies, which minimizes guesswork.
One notable strategic aspect is how enemy groups are triggered. If combat begins in the center of a zone, all nearby groups are alerted, making it harder to manage. However, with patience, you can approach from one end of the zone and engage groups individually, which makes encounters much more manageable. Tactical planning is always rewarded, and those who take the time to strategize will find success.
Overall, Mutant Year Zero is a worthy investment for fans of turn-based tactical combat, especially those who enjoy post-apocalyptic stories. While it’s not as challenging as XCOM, its unique mechanics, engaging narrative, and atmospheric presentation make it well worth the time and money.

Very AMAZING game... highly recommend it for any tactical gamers out there.. 10/10... hope we will see more DLCs or Mutant Year Zero 2..
it has some awkward stuff with movement and shot calculation but it makes up in spades in environment and atmosphere. makes me want to get the TTRPG, which hopefully soon i'll be able to do
It is just my genre, love both post-apocalyptic stuff and tactical RPGs, and my opinions are mixed. The artstyle is great, the music is good, the writing and the voice acting are both pretty good. So this game is pretty good, in theory.
The gameplay is a bit... wonky. The controls are counter-intuitive, you scroll with WASD, you can't zoom in or out, enemies do not seem to respawn; which is fortunate as there is no way to recover health outside of cannibalism (mid-combat) and medkits, which are precious. And you move painfully slow across the maps as you search for every bit of scrap possible, to pay for aformentioned medkits.
The combat is... uhm... "No chance to hit", when the enemy is about 5 meters away and the porky boy carries a giant shotgun. The stealth ambushing of patrols is neat, until you miss a 75% shot and trigger every enemy on the map. Then there's the Shamans, either you kill them in one turn or they summon three extra enemies. So that 75% shot? Yes, you missed again. And that ghoul hunter hit you in heavy cover, the damage is permanent and can only be remedied by aforementioned medkits, which, again, are scarce.
So the game is a bit brutal, and you are screwed over by the RNG time and time again.
Unless you play on the lowest possible difficulty. If you got a tent to set camp every now and then, or if you could heal the whole party at the Ark, or some other alternative, this could be a quite fun game. As it is, it is frustrating, but still rather neat. If I can change difficulty mid-game, I will probably set it to noob level, as it just isn't fun at the default difficulty.
Edit: So I am told that there is no permadeath in this game, despite characters "bleeding out". Certainly fooled me. Well, all right then!
I really like this. Once I got past some of the limitations of the game style(There are some really nice abilities that you can only use in-combat that would be extremely useful out of combat. And that you can only ever field 3 out of your 6 available characters), the game has been awesome.
I particularly enjoy all the nods to Sweden and Mutant, most stores have a pun in the name, the background music whenever Pripp is nearby, a bar being named Pripp's... so many of these. Not sure how fun they are for people who haven't grown up with this, but if you are Swedish, this game is worth playing for that alone.
I also really like that the game rewards careful play, and that you can chose when to engage in combat, when to slip by, what to ignore. There's no realy downside to not kill everything, in fact it's often worth to leave a few enemies alive in case you need to refill an ability before a really difficult fight.(They recharge upon kill.s) So the game is a nice strategic challenge.
It does have it's weak points, of course. One is just how annoying it is that you can't use your abilities out of combat. This is a dungeon crawl, and your characters are pretty much never at full health. 2 of them however have a healing ability, which would have been amazing, unfortunately you can't really utilize it without putting yourself at risk to taking more damage than you heal, because it doesn't work on lone enemies, because as soon as they die, combat ends. You also have characters that can jump and climb, but only in combat.
Another weak point is that you'll learn to be extremely reluctant to upgrade your guns, because you never know if the one you have now is worth investing in, or if you're just going to waste several map's worth of loot to upgrade a gun that will be obsolete in 5 minutes. I get this is a balancing feature, but it can be very frustrating on the first time, and a real cheatcode on a replay, since you now know exactly when a gun will become obsolete.
Story and voicework is really good to.

This game had an interesting concept, but the problem was that it's sold as an XCOM-like while it feels almost nothing like it. I've tried repeatedly to come back to this one, but I just can't convince myself to pick it back up. 5/10
This is the game that got me playing "Turn Based" games! It's a 10 out of 10 for me!

Great turn-based combat
Really great stealth tactics game play. The characters and plot are interesting. I really like the controller control scheme. It is superb for this kind of game. It works really well on Linux!
Solid indie stealth game. Reminds me somewhat of the original stealth-based Castle Wolfenstein.
Beat the game in 14 hours. Will not play again. Nice graphics and flair, but generally feels a bit lacking. Xcom is leagues better.
Worth trying, a gem that stood the test of time.

I enjoy turn based games and I wish I could recommend this game to players new to this genre. Games like xcom tend to lean hard into the RNG. It will never feel good or be fun to die to due to something outside of your control. xcom style games have this in spades.
Pro's:
Story, voice acting, music, sound design, video.
Con's:
Typical xcom turn based mechanics. Nothing takes me out of a story more than shooting an enemy at point blank range and missing. Or missing every shot while the enemy hit's all of theirs. I chose easy difficulty and the odds still stacked against me so that progression became chore. Throwing new players into the deep end right from the start is not fun. The RNG mechanics do not scale with difficulty or progression. This game just overwhelms the player with enemies and bad RNG to make it seem "hard".
A strong strategy game with tough fights and requires a good deal of thinking and tactics. My favorite kind of game!
the CRPG Genre is not dead
An other Nice turn-based strategy game has join the XCom Family. Believe it or not, this is the THIRD TIME i've play this game. First time from free Epic give away, second play "crack version" for the full DLC and yet i still decide to buy on Steam as a way to thanks and support the Dev. The game has:
- Amazing story: The game seems to have a life of its own, I am thoroughly engrossed in Mutant Year Zero (MYZ)'s lore so far and completely immersed in its world and wanted to be a part of it. the storytelling is extremely unique: Beside experience the main story, the NPCs and mutants will tell you a huge lore about it. This would make for a good movie or television series.
- Great game-play: Pretty fun and challenging most of the time you will encounter a big group of higher level enemies and 1 small mistake can lead to "ENDGAME" so play smart. Each character has their unique set of abilities that really do help a lot through certain levels. Having problem with a large group of enemy and being out numbers? ==> Then play stealth that is how the game design, you the the wolfs in the dark, take down ur prey one by one in silence.
- Great voice acting and dialogue: 1 work "entertainment". I was enthralled by the voice acting, have been laughed out loud at their dialogue. OMG have you listen to all Farrow's line? Giving her a British accent and all joke she made, the way she "beg" the team make me already in love with her.
- Good soundtrack: well the game cant be good without the soundtrack however i can see the dev didn't forcus on this much but it still good, not to epic but good.
- Beautiful characters & arts design: Look at Farrow, they draw her fur so detail and look at the environment, even the smallest detail has been design CAREFULLY.
- Also run well on Deck with max settings.
Finally, after all the experience i have, i can say the game worth its price, i enjoyed every moments of it <3 but still recommend wait 4 the sales. Good luck with your adventures to find Eden !!!!
