Cute, relaxing, highly imaginative, creative mini-games, fun combat, and building added a much needed layer of depth. I really appreciate their approach to world building and how they pull it out slowly through the environment and little bits of story.
I applaud the devs for trying out something new but this game feels... lacklustrer.
This game suffers from quantity over quality, in my opinion. It keeps throwing me more stuff, but everything feels shallow.
Tutorials are nonexistent or an unnecessary long wall of text to explain simple crafting mechanics. Like, you could explain these things with just one or two well made tutorial images...
The first 10 days were VERY OVERWHELMING. It does not let you chill or take your time in getting comfortable with the game, and if you get lost and it gets dark, your character passes out (you don't have a traditional clock to tell the time) and none of the tasks you were given get done. It just was not a great experience, even thought I could see what they were trying to do - to build narrative... good thing that the passing out part gets removed later.
The Fae elements kept me playing, but I was on the edge of refunding the game.
Also, the game does not hold your hand, which might sounds great, but when you spend +10 hours without even unlocking the Reputation and Renown system because the main story felt like a side quest instead of anything MANDATORY and then you have to re-grind points...
The writing keeps breaking the 4th wall constantly, in a way that makes me feel like the devs did not take their game seriously and when the running "joke" is: "hey this is a game amirite lol isn't that quirky!"... It was just obnoxious to the point that I started skipping dialogue and text. It gets better once you have exhausted all the early game texts.
The goals are also vague and I'm at a point in the game where I don't really know what I should do. Marriage? done. Child? done. Beat all the forests? Almost done. Gained all your skills? Almost done. Maxed out hearts of almost every villager? Done. Now I just wait idly for my shops to get me reputation so I can maybe unlock another story part - or do boring repetitive things.
Maybe I'm just really behind on progression BECAUSE it took me so long to unlock a KEY PART of the whole game.
House decorating and placing farm stuff is more annoying than enjoyable. There are also lots of visual bugs, like your pets piling on top of each other, things just walking through walls, rain freezing on screen, just to point a few. Your hubby/wife and children are also just ... there, slaving away on tasks I give them, to give me a reason to never really visit my farm unless I have to. Which is fine but it could have been a much more interesting system. This is, again, where the quantity over quality issue shines through.
I did like the crafting mini games, though, especially cooking. I also liked the combat, when it wasn't just destroying portals. It too became repetitive after a bit, but it was fine. I also liked exploring and not being tied to the farm.
It's just that the overall experience feels.. meh. I don't think I can push myself to finish the game, if there even is a satisfying ending.
Still, this game has been a good learning experience for me, to experience what kind of mechanics and gameplay loops sound good on paper, but don't necessarily work when implemented in such a shallow way.
10/10 Will play forever. Some people in comments with less then 24h played are not liking the game or don't think the story has depth. when you spend time getting villagers to like you they open up and tell you there stories tho some have more to say then others its still engaging but this takes time. You don't tell a stranger your life story. Ill admit i had to do a lot of wiki research because I am a try hard but even if you don't do that it is like any other game where you have to learn the environment and actually read what pops up on screen. Its like a world farming, crafting, family, sim. where if you don't put time and effort into learning the mechanics you wont get much enjoyment out of it. its easy to get distracted with side tasks but that's what i love about it. there is a calendar making the most important events and if you are a try hard like me the wiki has so much info on it. i have gotten half the achievements on my first generation and you can train your children to be even better stats then your first gen. if you don't like the death mechanics then you have not followed this game from kick start as that was always the idea. a generational farming sim. and one of the things that really drew me to the game is 2 of the devs worked on the original fable story so you get that kind of odd humor with it. this is definitely a game where you have to experiment to get the best out of it and maybe even restart once you get the hang of it but don't worry about missing things in the first year or second the events always come back around and you only get rewarded for participating not punished for missing them witch i love. i have played the heck out of this game and love it and would recommend it to all looking for a relaxing challenge.
If you'd like a proper faerie tale game --as in not the cutesy stuff?-- this is definitely the game for you.
Unique game mechanics, interesting story.. and ah the pretty, the creepy, and the deadly that are the Fae.
(Sort-of side note: I ran ran like crazy the first time I so much as caught a glimpse of Tom lmao!)
I still haven't gotten myself to the end proper, or for that matter my first ...death? But this is one of the more interesting games I've played, period. Pretty much my only gripe is the potion shop mechanics.. making stuff there past a simple powder hurts my brain; especially when using a controller.
Otherwise I absolutely love it. 9/10 and definitely one of my all time fave games.
I've been playing this game again after a while (probably a couple years) and it's still one of the most hidden gems you can find out here. Not only does it have some unique gameplay-life-sim mechanics, but it's also a labor of love for video games - from the story, characters and dialogue, to the graphics and animations, to the sound and music.
For a rather small team, that's quite an accomplishment, and the fact that they're still working on updates and fixes is worth a mention.
It's time for the game to get more attention!
Kynseed combines elements of Stardew Valley and the famous Lionhead RPG Fable and the result can be described as mostly successful. During its early access phase I was hesitant to purchase Kynseed because I was afraid that it could end up to be a shallow experience - I thus waited for it to finally leave early access and bought it with a small discount.
I guess it was a good idea to wait because older reviews often mentioned that content is a bit on the lacking side and when I started it the "Big Build Update" had already launched which seemingly added quite some new features.
So when I started the game I immediately recognized the fancy look of the characters which may not be everyones cup of tea but for me it is alright - I'm not 100% excited about the character design but it wouldn't deter me from enjoying the game. There could be more options to design your own character, though, I chose one of the few models that looked okay-ish but I'm not really all too content with the result. Well I'm not someone who is obsessed with character looks but I can see other people to whom this is a more important feature being disappointed in the scarcity of customization options.
The start of the game was pretty neat - you start with some choices which determine some starting bonuses and you also get to choose your twin brother who will cross your way several times during the game. My first impression of the overall design of the game world was a pleasant one - the vibrant fairytale-like style is really neat and immersive.
That's one of the aspects which immediatly reminded me of "Fable" which also had an outstanding fairytale-like charm to it. One of my first actions was to grab some apples from a nearby tree where I was greeted with the first pun when I picked up the "gassy apple" which sells for for higher prices due to "inflation" - I cought myself chuckling a bit at that and looked forward to the wealth of puns that were to follow - just as it was back then in the Fable-days (for everyone who played Fable puns like this one should come to no surprise - the Fable series was always know for it's quirky humor...and Kynseed follows in the footsteps of its older brother - so to say). My expectation of encountering numerous humorous jokes was absolutely met, Kynseed is a lot more on the humorous side than Stardew Valley is - for everyone who enjoys humorous game this is a definite plus over Stardew Valley, anyone else who enjoys a more serious tone in games may find it annoying in the long run. Personally, I prefer the funnier setting of Kynseed because it definately brightens up the mood and that's what that kind of games are mostly here for. I'd even say that the whole game impressed me more than Stardew Valley did, even though I was very captivated by the world of Stardew Valley, too, so that says something. Nevertheless I still have fewer hours in Kynseed which is partly because I don't have it as long as I have Stardew Valley on my account but it's also because I have played well over 100 hours of Stardew Valley and I'm not the kind of person who wants to put more than 200 hours in a game because my backlog constantly cries for attention and I want to play as many different games as I can. So I didn't want to put too many hours in Kynseed because ultimately I have played both Fable and Stardew Valley and this game has so many features out of both of those games, so my desire has already been kind of satiated.
But for everyone who has no problem in investing countless hours in one game or for someone who hasn't yet played through Stardew Valley the similarities are no drawback.
If someone has yet to decide between Stardew Valley or Kynseed I would recommend Kynseed (despite having fewer hours in it than in Stardew Valley for the above stated reason) just because there's a bigger variety in what to do with your ingame time - you aren't stuck with just the farming, you can also become an apothecary who mixes potions and concoctions, a smith who forges tools and weapons or a mixed goods vendor who sells self-made meals from home-grown vegetables. Every profession comes with mini-games which are very unique and influence the star-rating of the finished product (I had fun with the mini-games). Another factor of the quality of the final product is the star-rating of the used ingredients which is connected to several conditions that can be found through experimenting or hints that are scattered across the world. Finding all star ratings was quite addictive - and amusing because some ot the star requirements are hilarious like shooting apples with a slingshot and picking them while on the back of your piggy - which can be bought on pig auctions. Well, in fact the the overall "collectatron" happening in this game can become one big addiction.
There is a wealth of things that can be picked up (fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, notes, books...) which leads to putting countless hours in the exploration of the game world, always in search for new and / or better quality stuff to use for crafting. There were days where I couldn't leave the PC because I lost my sense for time in the world of Kynseed - at the start of the game that also happened quite literally because until you get a better clock you have to use dandelions for time measurement - yeah you heard right - at first you can only determine the time through picking flowers - which is very innovative but also a bit stressful, I was happy when I finally got a real clock but kudos to the devs for trying something new! Some people lamented about the stressful time management stating that the day is too short for the flood of quests and daily tasks - and yeah I can see why some were stressed because of this because at the beginning it really feels overwhelming (which is also probably a good thing because it shows that the game is far from being shallow - there is indeed a lot to do and accomplish) but that feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed fades over time when you start to become familiar with your surroundings and know where to find ressources and specific characters.
So my advice is to keep playing it even though stress may set in - it definately becomes less stressful and more pleasant with time - some games need a little dedication before you can fully enjoy the features that they have to offer.
As you can see I'm overall really glad that I purchased Kynseed after my initial hesitation.
So why did I say that the game is just "mostly successful" in being an exotic hybrid of Stardew Valley and Fable?
Well, the game definately also has it's downsides - characters to date and marry are abudant, you can basically marry anyone who is old enough to be a marriage-candidate - but that abudance of choices comes with a drawback - as quite a lot of other people have already mentioned, the characters aren't too fleshed out and it quickly shows after you have won their friendship. The dialogue and quests are quickly becoming repetitive and shallow which is a pity because relationships are an important aspect of games like this one and a lot of people want their in-game relationships to feel meaningful and realistic - a feeling that this game can hardly offer, I didn't even have the desire to marry anyone because the characters lack just that - character. Their personalities are rather bland, sure some of them have their moments but it is still disappointing. Though I can understand why the devs couldn't offer a more indepth relationship system because as I said the choice of candidates is just too big for that - and there also is the generation-system which further complicates the implementation of intricately crafted relationships. But yeah, despite that the game is still a lot of fun and lets be real - the relationships in Stardew Valley aren't too fancy either, they also lack depth and once the goal to marry that special someone is reached the initial excitement quickly fades away - the same goes for Fable...
beautiful pixel art, so many things to do. combat system is pretty engaging and fun. also, good soundtrack i wish they were available to purchase
A very Good game! Amazing pixel art and also great game play.
I tried this game a while ago before the big build update and I liked it but didn't understand a lot of the mini games. after getting back into it recently I went from 10 hours to 100 in no time. while the apothecary games are still confusing to me I absolutely love cooking. I really like the generation part of the game and being able to pass down the farm to your children. watching the NPC'S pair up and have their own families that grow up is really cool as well. the new customization options are really awesome and I love being able to update the house. I almost wish our first characters sibling would visit the farm from time to time and maybe have a cut scene or something. the childhood this time around feels more filled out as before went by really quick. I think it would be really cool to possibly get more things on the world map or even be able to build up ghost towns, or be able to help matchmake certain villagers. Idk if owning the pub is yet possible but that is something I am looking forward to. another thing Id like to see is an update for adventuring is possible classes for your characters or different weapons. the bow is something I hardly find useful as I spend too much time dodging attacks. Id like to be able to craft and use other weapons like daggers, hammers, staffs, etc and maybe even be able to enchant them at a fae realm or something. one thing I have found difficult is balancing the workers schedules in shops, I wish we could get more info on each worker to see hours they are comfortable with or how itll affect their mood right away. my relationship with a few villagers got ruined when I first opened shop but they dont tell you they are unhappy until a week or so and they lose all hearts. something to be a bit wary about, shops do not need to be 24-7. i keep mine open from 6-6 and make a decent profit.I only keep workers on for 2-3 shifts. this game is also pretty animal friendly as they are more companions then livestock (just dont feed them a gassy apple and slingshot them haha) there are also tons of vegetarian dishes but it would be cool to see a possible meat substitutions like the game Wylde Flowers does. I mostly would like this because Pork tree seeds and chicken crops seem super rare as you can only buy one seed at a time from the fae realm. right now this is my current favorite game and I can't wait to see future updates.
This game was so much fun. It has so many different paths you can take as well as a main story. Whether a freestyle player or a task objective player the game really meet all my standards. Awesome game. The only thing I would want different is a multiplayer option so I can share this game with my friends.
George thinks its marvelous, and I do too
Kynseed is the first of many I've played that has greatly subverted my expectations of being a "farming RPG" game. After "Stardew Valley," many developers struggled to give the players something fresh and unique, and I believe Kynseed succeeded in that field. A darker story adds more depth while giving the player the experience of dealing with the consequences of their actions. Excellent references to folklore. Pixel animation feels gentler "to the touch." The battle mechanics keep you on a small verge between real-time and tour-based fighting. Family tree building feels great, although I feel I need to put more hours into it so I can see its true potential.
I played it on SteamDeck, and I'd like better control mapping, more like in Stardew Valley desktop port to the console version, as that'd feel more natural.
Highly recommended.
PS. I'm just playing with you. Pig Riding hooked me from the first hour, and I didn't want to let go until I finished the main story.
Kynseed takes the daily life/farming genre of games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, but solves my core problem with all those games: once I've got everything up and running, what do I do? Kynseed adds an actual narrative, dungeons and a goal that gave me a reason to keep running dungeons once I'd met done all my farming and business for the day.
Since the last time I played it, they've apparently also added ways to hire people to work on your farm and expand where/how you can grow crops. I haven't explored all of that yet, but reading about it has made me want to go back in for a third time. Truth is, the game was already great before the Big Build update.
There's also a mechanic by which you continue the game after your current character has passed away. You can either have a child and raise them, imbuing them with some of the traits and stats of the current player character, or you can adopt a child, if you fail to have one. Adopting's not a great choice, btw, because you're rolling the dice on traits and stats.
If you're not interested in the combat, there might not be enough life sim elements to keep you going, but I've greatly enjoyed this game twice over and will probably go back for a third time to see what the Big Build update added.
Very sweet game with a unique take on the farming sim RPG style. The ability to play a lineage and not a single stagnant character is such a fun mechanic that it leaves you feeling accomplished the longer it goes on. Truly a spectacular game that I would recommend to anyone who loves other farming sim RPGs like Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, etc.
As much as I tried to like this game, it's unfortunately boring. The crafting minigames and fishing are fun, but those are simple breaks in boring gameplay. The art style is wonderful, the music and animals are cute, but compared to other games of this gere Kynseed has not much to offer.
Thumb down
Up there with the sims in always wanting to start anew, but also wanting to see it through.
as much as id love to recommend this game to people, i can't in the state that its in. Ive played around 30-40 hours in the past 3 weeks and STILL havent maxxed out the reputation. Environmental events arent trackable, so they end before you even know theyre available sometimes. other times theres events with themes and nowhere to check where the theme is! so there goes participating :( You can really feel that the game is unfinished with it missing simple quality of life features, or even the incredibly long progression with little reward. I hope in a few years this game will have some real content behind it.
I literally cannot recommend this game enough- it's like Stardew Valley, on crack, with a storyline to boot. There is SO. MUCH. to explore and do. Blacksmithing, farming, cooking, fishing, etc You can run shops. There's an entire combat system that isn't just button mashing. There is just so much to this game, and everything is immensely satisfying. The art is stunning, the humor and NPCs are vibrant and humorous, and the music and sound design are fantastic. It's a really stellar game and deserves way more recognition than it's gotten. A top favorite game for me now, and I feel like I could play it forever. Buy this game. It's absolutely fantastic and you won't be disappointed!
If you like puns, you will love this game.
Love this game. So much to do, and the style is charming. The feel of the game and mini games is unique and awesome.
As a big Stardew and then Sun Haven fan, I was instantly taken to Kynseed. It's familiar yet new, and its writing is clever. Not only does is compel you to keep playing, exploring the vast map and learning its intriguing lore, it's also genuinely funny (the knockers line - brilliant). Visual wise it leans toward more of a Stardew aesthetic but after playing through a few in-game days its own quirky style shines through, complemented by its high standard of music. On the farm it's relaxing and peaceful, in the mine a solo viola pierces through the dim in a haunting melody. Can't wait to explore more.
Honestly, it's one of the best cool new takes on the farming rpg sim. I really really enjoy this game. 10/10 recommend.
I've only just finished the Prologue and I already know it's going to be one of my favourite games of all time. As far as cosy games go, this is top tier, one of the best. It deserves to do at least half as well as Stardew Valley, if not the same or more. It's particularly recommended if you are at all a fan of fantasy and folklore of a mostly British origin, there's so many cool references and darker undertones without ever quite getting as far as folk horror - there's more than a few influences there yet it keeps things cute and kid friendly, although on the maturer side. I didn't realise til now that this is from the creators of Black and White, and Fable, and there are strong nods to those too. If I'd realised sooner I would have got this ages ago, it's been on my list for a while. It's just a really beautiful cosy game that will put a smile on your face if any of this appeals to you.
Also, it's huge with as much potential for role-playing as you like, so many options for playstyles. My only minor criticisms is you are subjected to a lot early on, Stardew does it slightly better in gradually pulling you in, but I feel this has more scope and more to explore and discover. Also the music is fine but could do with I dunno, more epic variety? I'm being picky but maybe I will discover more as I'm still early game. But those are not reasons to avoid this. Did I mention it was beautiful? Seriously one of the best looking pixel graphics games I've come across, the colour palettes, detail, design and world-building is phenomenal. I almost feel guilty buying this game in a sale, absolutely worth full price.
If you are looking for a cosy adventure RPG with many options for which path to take, and you want some escapism from the world outside, this is it, don't hesitate!
I have played this game in early access and did not enjoy it one bit.
Recently, I decided to give it another go now the game has been released and it is wonderful!
At first, it was a bit overwhelming. There is so much you can do and so many NPCs to meet.
I did wish some NPCs were developed a bit more.
I really did not like the combat element at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is actually ok.
I love the whimsical atmosphere, the (sometimes strange) dialogues, the eye for detail and the fact that there is a farming element but it doesn't dominate the game. Your crops are fine without you so you can focus on exploring.
Time passes quite slowly, so I don't get the generational aspect of the game.
But overall, it is a very enjoyable and relaxing game.
Except for the spider dude part...
Would definitely recommend!
Better than Stardew Valley IMO
Kynseed is a beautifully done generational rpg game, It can be painfully pun-y at times, and maybe a little cheesy, but:
-the story is great
-the fishing isn't a massive pain.
-there's lots of different stuff to spend your time doing
-the characters are diverse and constantly changing (albeit they can be a *bit* weird at times)
- after adulthood you don't *have* to sleep and there isn't an energy bar so you can just do stuff as much or as little as you want.
absolute fave
I played this back when it originally released to steam and i can say its a huge upgrade from that time
Great game, so much to do, quite overwhelming. But enjoyable
So, so cute. And fun!
PLAY THIS GAME IT'S SO GOOD
this game has its flaws but id still tell my friends about it
fantastic
I love this game so much. I’ve played it twice now and it totally absorbs me. Between the NCPs, exploration, and management, the game has such a unique charm to it! I’m ready for the next update; I want to run the taverns so bad! I really think once all the content is finished, Kynseed will be a perfect game.
i played during early access and it has been updated and changed so much in the best way, super addicting
I enjoy this one, it's cute and quirky in a pleasant way. Strong points are the world and its people, and there's simply a lot to do.
I find myself putting it down a bit overwhelmed at times due to the rate at which you can accumulate tasks, and there's a lot of fetch quests that starts to fill your to-do list.
Good casual rpg vs farming sim, fun to play and relaxing.
What can I say, my hours indicate I might like this game lol. I love this game. Never boring. I love the mechanics and the quests. I love the cooking. Cant keep up with these people buy my items even though I make 80 of those dang fairy cakes. lol I love it.
There is so much to do in this game, it has me hooked.
Love this game to death; so unique, well thought out, beautiful and fun. I keep coming back to it after spending hours and hours on it.
Up there with Stardew
First, i have to say that the music is heavenly!!!!! But so short! Please make them longer :(
In the sea of cozy farming life sim game, Kynseed is definitely a must play. This game is not just a reskin of that farming sim that you love, it is so damn refreshing with many new mechanics and actually interesting storyline (that prologue was shocking!).
Play it however you like, no stamina limit, finish requests whenever you want, no hurrying back home to sleep, no wandering around the map just to deliver gift or item -you just put those things in the mailbox nice and easy, take your pets with you wherever you go, ride pigs, have fun with cooking and crafting minigames, build a family, grow your legacy and so on and so on, you'll never get bored.
top tier life sim. highly recommend.
10/10 buy it, easy $40 game all day
As a fan of pixel farming games (Stardew Valley, Fields Of Mistria, Core Keeper) I really love this game, from the beautiful art to the generational game mechanic, this is genuinely one of my favourite games of the genre and so insanely unique to me as well. The ability to marry whoever I please, have children and customise my farm is a very appealing aspect of the game but there are a few downsides I would hope to see improvements on in the future-
Firstly the ending feels rushed and there doesn't feel like there's much incentive to pass on the Kynseed, I do it purely out of enjoyment, but I would like if the game progress was in some way more locked behind actual generational progress.
Secondly characters and interactions can feel very one dimensional and break immersion, for example, I've passed my Kynseed a few times but whenever I speak to Robin/Robyn/The original sibling turned master, they always refer to me as their sibling rather than great their niece/nephew. Townsfolk don't have special interactions to you marrying their spouse or cheating on them. Your family just disappears when you pass on the Kynseed rather than move into a town, you do occasionally see one of your siblings walking around the shops but it's not really the same as seeing them have their own family. Another issue I have with the NPCs relationships is that marriage feels too immediate and easy, there is no romance level you need to reach past the 3 hearts you will reach with every single NPC anyway which ruins the fun of romancing characters for me.
Thirdly the lack of customisation- It would be great to be able to buy more outfits or hairstyle in game. My last issue is the lack of family trees for each NPC, it would be a nice quality of life addition to be able to see how each NPC is related, their deceased spouses etc.
Over all I would love some more 'immersion' in the game with more options for NPC interactions. Regardless I still really love this game and hope to see more.
A unique take on the genre. Takes a bit to get going, but there's a lot of interesting content!
Not what I was expecting and glad for it, this game has a lot of depth, a ton of humour, and will suck you in. The mini-games and combat took me a while to warm to, and some (sharpening) I still suck at, but the differences between each do make it feel more like an achievement when you've got the hang of it.
Really enjoyable RPG similar to Stardew with a bit of everything - farming, cooking, crafting, combat, collection, economy. Lots of quests and the minigames for crafting are nicely polished and fun. Definitely recommend.
One of the best in this genre. Hours in and it's still rewarding and fun.
:)
LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH
