Occupy Mars -

Pretty solid game. There are some intricacies involved with the game, such as wiring of power and water, but those things can be learned. I've recently returned back to the game after a short hiatus and have enjoyed my experience overall. I enjoy survival games a lot. I play MOST survival titles if they're not terrible. This game has good building and crafting, resource gathering is pretty good, there's a zero learning curve mini game to resource harvesting, I don't mind that a bit. Overall, it's solid. I am quite intrigued by the idea of coop, I think it's going to work very well with the game.
Really enjoying this survival game. You can control the difficulty. The learning curve is pretty steep but the tutorials give you an idea and how things work. But mostly it is trial and error. Still in early access and has few glitches and bugs but over all I am having fun playing .
Like the game play and its the closest Ill ever get to interplanetry travel
I can't recommend the game at this time, there is far too many audio glitches and the devs have shown that they are willing and have the ego to lock the player into actions for months before finally relenting... oh yess I have to for some reason reopen every defunct airlock door on all the abandoned bases on planet.. honestly after the irritation the devs are causing I lost all excitement from other game announcements from them like *Urban Explorer* looks really promising but I won't touch it until I see a lot of game play footage so I can be sure the irritations of an ego needing to be validated aren't showing up in this game too. Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful game but there is things you'll start to notice are clear disrespects to your time. Please don't feed into the the hype of "game hours to completion" because that means you're paying someone else to dictate your environment and if they don't force you into a 40 hour week then the game isn't worth it... no think about it for a second if you pay $15 for a 2 hour movie ticket did you enjoy the movie just for those 2 hours or did you chat with friends about it..so on and so forth.. so if a dev forces you into a 4 or 5 second animation 6 to 8 times in an hour how upset are you going to be to see the same spit take for what now amounts to 15 minutes of the 2 hour movie. So here is the $18 review short review: don't give the devs money they are out of touch with the survival player base.
it is nice
Love to build then this is for you.
well that was a waste of my money
I get that it's still in early access, but my god, in terms of controls and reactivity and environment and just EVERYTHING, this is the worst-feeling game I've ever played. Like a genuinely unpleasant experience from the second I loaded in until I just couldn't take it anymore.
Awesome game play and mechanics, I am really enjoying this game everything is well put together and well thought of. grab it and you wont go wrong, well put together cant wait to play co op.
Great game! Cant wait for multiplayer!
good game
its looks really good and i see so much potential for this game.
great game. Looking forward to more quest and story line
Got inside my vehicle...that was a huge mistake. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET OUTTA THE F**KING THING. You tap the tutorial and the controls for Vehicles, NOTHING. It's like a walk through hell. "You're stuck on Mars. The developers have trapped you in the first thing you touch. ENJOY." Save your money. The game is utterly gorgeous for what little I was able to experience, but it's amazing how the developers can't understand what we don't about their game. Everything in implied interface. Get a copy of Planet Crafters and enjoy life.
worth playing but dont get to excited about an ending lol
love this game because it give you the abilitiy to think on your feet
For fans of "The Martian" there's a heck of a lot to like. It's not entirely intuitive - some prompting would be helpful - but it's a rewarding experience and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself.
Amazing game. Fully playable. Im excited for new content.
If there was a tutorial, I totally ignored it and streamed it for the first time on my Twitch. I now quick save often and I think its a fun game. Trying to survive and well its fn hard. I can't wait for co op and its actually runs well with no crashes. I'm already addicted. Looking forward to more updated content. I prefer games with 0 tutorials so I can learn and process things . Well I recommend because it is fun to suffer!
For now nice for 12jears old. And to far out of the big legue games.
Its early access so its playable yet needing some more time in the oven. An hour into the game and I was spending more time at YTU (You Tube University), than playing the game to figure out how things worked. Simple tasks like building a water well and connecting it to the workshop should have taken a few minutes, but was a good 5 hours trying to figure out power/cables/tanks before realizing that the well reading Zero output was bugged. Constant questions I was having were, is this a feature or bug. I was 12 long hours just figuring out how to make food just before consuming my last MRE before I discovered the game had some not so easy to find tutorials a few layers deep within the in-game menu. Well-hidden by the devs I guess to make this game not like the big AAA games. The tutorial information was “very” basic but seriously needed for new players trying to figure out the unique/awkward/strange game play. It is lacking some quality-of-life features like, hover tips for what happens if I push the button, a to do list for missing building materials while constructing, and simple map points on/off. After thirty hours I discovered how to turn off ALL my map points so only the location I wanted was showing. That “feature” really needs a tutorial explain map functions.
To recommend this survival game kind of means you must accept someone else efforts building a game that is interesting to them while challenging to you. Within expected parameters (standards)!
The recommendation buttons on Steam really need a 'meh' button.
Most of the game is pretty good. Good idea, well composed structure, reasonable pacing. But there are some irritating grindy bits that just made me uninstall.
The worst one is the iron cost for universal repair kits and the fact that iron seems to be the rarest mineral on Mars (I thought the reason it was red was because of all the iron). I kept getting hit by meteors and losing all my power (then you lose all your food of course "withering"). Unfortunately, it takes about three days of rock mining to find enough iron to build all the repair kits you need.
Then you get smashed again.
Sorry, that's just tedious.
Game devs: Up the supply of iron or drop the universal repair kit cost. It killed the game for me
I mainly play survival games and this one has quickly become my new favorite. The Campaign has the most bare bones of a tutorial which is fine if you like survival crafting games and learning as you go. The only bug I've found so far is that the supply drops are never at the location they say they are. They are either invisible in the air or deep underground which cannot be accessed. It would be nice to get the supply drops but it's not necessary and for me not worth the hassle of traveling the distance for an item.
The game is not quick or easy, it takes patience, thought and planning. I do like how you need to be mindful and balance your resources, specifically water, power, food in that order. Plant too much and don't have enough water, plants die, food runs out, you die. expand the base too quickly without having enough power, plants can die, you run out of food, you die. don't scavenge enough and stock up on food when you are learning to grow your own, you die. Like with any survival scenario you need to always find in order; water, shelter, power, food, defense. The game only auto-saves when you sleep so if you don't regularly save your game or if you like to run off ill prepared you'll die. Don't place markers on your map to find your way back, you die. It is a survival game where you are stranded on Mars, it's another planet, surviving is the goal and anything can go wrong and kill you. I'm seeing some negative reviews lately but the game sets you up with all the tools you need to survive and thrive, it just takes experimenting and practice. Whenever you start a new play through you always land near a water source and a derelict outpost you can scavenge and scrap. I don't don't think it gets much easier than that. Really looking forward to the co-op gameplay when it is available.
After absolutely no tutorial on how to setup anything, failure to establish any form of power and power storage, several attempts at mining anything useful, I had to uninstall this game. Just trying to build anything and figure out how to produce water or oxygen I just gave up. Can't store power in a battery because the cables wont connect and yes they are going the right way. Unless this is addressed an a bug fix, I wont be playing this game
Very fun game. Everything took a bit to figure out but I was able to figure most things out on my own. Can't wait to see the next place they take the game
Cannot believe this game doesn't have an autosave - game crashed after 4hrs and I lost the lot. How can a EA game not have an autosave - EA Games are notoriously unstable.
Gonna have to set an alarm on my phone to remind me to save every 5 mins so I don't waste HOURS again.
Lots of basic game information is not explained in game so prepare for the seemingly mandatory Youtube camping. Which I wont do as I don't buy a game to sit on Youtube....if I wanted to watch Youtube I wouldn't spend money on a game.
Sooo been playing for another 5 hours (now a total of 9 and am no closer to building a base than I was before I purchased the game.
So many things are impossible to find in the quantities they are need.......solar panels, 1 found in 5 hrs.....need a load to build a single solar power source .....Cement, found 2 in 5 hrs, need 10 to be able to build a building to put a workshop in to be able to upgrade your tools.....fuses found 18 in 5 hrs, not even close to enough for a building that has an electricity connection - not that it matters as you can only build 1 solar power generator (due to the rarity of needed resources), and that isn't enough to power anything.
Also, this game has redesigned Airlocks - rather than a double door entry/exit system to prevent air escaping, what this game calls Airlocks, the rest of the planet will know by a different name......A single door. So instead of building one Airlock, you need to build 2 sets of these doors (using double the resources) to have the desired effect.
If I extend the current time it takes to find the needed resources to when I will actually be able to build anything I'm looking at at a month real time as a minimum.
I have visited and scavenged all I can from at least 10 different locations....I guess you need to know where the devs have hidden the needed resources before you play - or waste months of your life playing a very tedious game of hide and seek.
Very fun so far with much potential! Can't wait for it to be finished up and polished!
The balance between complexity and ease of learning is solid, it just needs rough edges polished out.
I had to think hard about rating this game. It is a WIP and I have enjoyed most of my time spent in the game. It scratches some of the itch for playing out "the Martian" but a lot of the systems and mechanics in the game just aren't there yet. There is a frustrating lack of apparent progress in development although the devs promise they are working hard behind the scenes. I really hope they flesh out and polish the game as the concept and core are there but unless they start making progress this game feels at risk of becoming stuck in early access twilight more akin to tesla's cybertruck than space x's Starship.
Of course I hope to change my review as the game develops but I wouldn't recommend buying now unless you have the patience to wait what might be a long development.
Played 45 min, bored the whole time, encountered game breaking bug where I couldn't interact with anything, not much usable direction on things to do, doesn't hold a candle to every good game in this genre. I am the exact target market for this game, I play tons of survival crafter games, they are one of my favorite genres. This one is not good.
126.6 hrs at time of review.
169 hrs at time of edit.
I can tell that the developer has put a lot of hard work into this game, so I'm going to give them a thumbs up, and hopefully they'll flesh out the game in future updates.
I have a mid-range system dating back to 2019, and it runs decent enough for me to play this game, my computer doesn't get hot like other early access games such as, "The Infected".
The game is worth the asking price, and considering the level of detail, and graphics options that allow me to scale things down on an older PC, tells me that the developer is more experienced, or has some sort of previous background in the industry, to have gotten this far.
I enjoyed the journey, and have gone as far as I can, having completed all tasks assigned, until further updates are released.
I look forward to seeing other games by this developer. So far, the game has left me with positive impressions, and while there are bugs to be encountered, they are not game breaking, ...just requires loading a previous save, or reloading the game from the desktop, and that solved my problems.
Love the "alien" vibe, due to the sounds, I was actually afraid to be outside at night. The developer really set the mood, and I'm quite confident, if they ever put their minds to do an "alien-isk" style sand-box, would probably succeed, where most others have failed.
GOOD JOB. I'll keep playing, perhaps trying new strategies.
highly recommend for those engineer types, its early access so its not polished by any means.challenge yourself with friends too soon
This game is a really fun game. Its not a easy game to at all but i don't thing its overly hard. you just need to learn a lot from your mistakes and such. Though its really rewarding when you learn how to do things and start to understand everything and how it works. Exploring is a big thing in the game so don't be scared to go out and explore. My only issue the moment feels a bit weird is all. so anyone complain that the game does not hold your hand. sorry but games should never hold your hand fully. your a smart adult you will figure it out over time.
.
so far its pretty good I cant wait to see COOP
Really poorly optimised. Looks like fun just couldn't get past how janky and poorly optimised the game is like every 5 seconds my game is stuttering (i have a 6600XT so its not my gpu failing either). Might try again if it is ever actually playable.
Despite in early access this is tragic. Moving logic is very slow and not very agile. Game is not explainig very much on what one shall do so its really hard to even find out what shall build... and dead... there is missing descriptions of items builds tools, and their usage as well. Played a lot of survivals but so far this one is lowest...
I enjoyed the progression, the flow of dying to surviving to thriving, and the focus on power early on. The base building is pretty bare bones and the story isn't quite there yet. I put 20 solid hours in and regret nothing.
Y E S
I have tried to get in to it and tried to get in to it and tried to get in to it, yet I can't. It might be a good game in 3 years or so, but at the moment it isn't. The devs have a lot to do.
Nice Game. Not so easy, but nice anyways. You have to find out, how thinks are working and therefore...you'll die a few times at the beginning. But if you are into "I'll find it out, no matter how often I'll die"...this is def. something for you.
Not for people without brain...because you'll need some, if you want to play this successfully.
Basic gameplay is easy to learn and to understand. Graphics are very cool. One of the best games, I've ever played of this genre.
I have been on the fence about whether to get this game for at least a year. Now, I decided to give it a try. Interface is clunky and awkward. Frame rate and controls are janky, no matter what resolution I choose. The biggest problem is that there are long periods where you simply can't do anything. Why should you have to stand around for 5 minutes slowly recharging your suit? this is something that should take like 5 seconds, tops. What can you even do in the pod when its too cold outside? sleep? No, you're not tired. Sit there and look out the window while you wait for the sun to come up. The mining is tedious. Walking around is tedious. Surely i'll play it some more, but there needs to be more things to do in the beginning portion, and i'm not really sure what you are supposed to do in the mid-game and end-game. My guess is, not much, build a big base and that's it.
why did i buy this
Maybe when the high-school computer science class gets its act together and finds a instructor who willing to work, this could be a better game. Simple bugs that should be fixed are not happening. Don`t pay more than $2.99 for it.
This game is well thought out. It was hard to understand how the mechanics worked in the beginning of the game as I died several times, but after watching some game play on YouTube and putting those ideas into practise I quite enjoy playing the game. It takes a lot of thought into how you build and where you build. I found out the hard way that you should raise all structures as the ground is not even and can become a problem to put buildings down. I had to break buildings down well into the game but turned out better for my layout of buildings. Crafting and gathering resources can become a chore but I found the further I travelled the better the resources. Just watch your battery level on the Rover, my mistake I ran out of juice 3400m from my base, lucky I had solar panels and other bits so I could charge the battery but had to sit for most the day in game to charge it, but it was fun and lesson learned. I highly recommend this game to anyone who has lots of time on their hands.
Great game!
This is a game that I originally didn't like but got bored enough to try it again and wtf, it's actually good. it is NOT like all survival craft, it has a more critical element to it, more difficult, more unforgiving... but it has a full save system so no biggie. A good recommend...with patience.
its good
Needs some work but if you are into sandbox style games then this one for you
too raw ...
Jackhammer-ing Rocks>Chopping Trees. I can't think of any major marooned-style survival games I haven't played, I'm a big fan of the genre. This one is gritty, technical, and difficult, even on the easiest settings. There is a lot to figure out and I've barely scratched the surface. The game has a helpful tutorial/popup system starting out so you aren't entirely lost in the weeds. I think there's a lot of game to chew on for an EA title, definitely got my money's worth. Developer seems active and interested, excited to see how this progresses.
A great game for those who like a technical level base builder. Once you get past the initial urgency of finding a water source and enough power for you first base, it steps up from there.
