Описание

Bloodlust 2: Nemesis is a "Hack 'n Slash - Dungeon Crawling - Action RPG" experience that will allow players to explore the dark underworld of a forgotten society of Vampires and their disciplines, all while trying to solve the secrets to their bloodline's scientifically enhanced monstrous power.

"After the 'Hunter' killed an emperor to the east and destroyed an entire bloodline, the Council felt the playing field between the humans and the undead might be a little too even. They authorized the development of an experimental food source; a synthetic blood built from both alchemy and science. The project is funded and developed by the Taku Clan, under the codename NEMESIS; Neural Embryonic Morphing Experimental Synthetic Immune System something or other."

"I guess it's supposed to be better than the real thing. I don't really know... I never touched it, since I prefer my blood warm and dirty. But I've seen its strength, replicating and enhancing the cells of the undead, allowing our species to morph into even stronger creatures, making us more monstrous than we already are."

~ Vitalus, blood thirsty scavenger from the Dark City

If you liked Shadow-Hunter I believe you'll also enjoy Nemesis. As in this is a decent vampire-centric-action-looter-rpg that plays out akin to a janky Diablo within the context of an urban fantasy setting. There's much to do about certain vampires trying to create a synthetic artificial blood compound that can boost their power-levels exponentially. Different fractions are now scurrying for their pieces of the pie after the untimely death of the local over-lord whilst you are yet another glorified errand runner in this world of B-movie darkness!

Comparing the Bloodlust series to VTM: Blood-Lines is pointless. As in Blood-Lines had a lot more "role-playing" whereas Blood-Lust is more about braving dungeons crawling with indescribable horrors to bring back awesome gear. (Weapons, armor, trinkets, etc.) From there you engage in the occasional boss-fight with some of the most quirky 4th wall breaking bat-heads ever to grace the crimson screen!

There's a lot of pop-cultural references that seem more "On the nose" compared to Shadow-Hunter. I'd say Nemesis takes itself less seriously and is a bit more comedic. However, many of the eccentric characters you interact with are still a likable bunch!

As before you unlock and upgrade vampire powers that gradually turn you into a moving force of destruction. As before you can also sire lesser vampire servants by drinking humans dry then recruiting them onto your night-shift of the damned! It's a fun concept that still works really well for the most part.

The most controversial edition to Nemesis is "The Wraith". Remember how the Grim-Reaper would chase you in Gauntlet? Same thing happens here and if he catches you you end up in his lair and have to depart hastily. Frankly, I don't know what purpose this serves. Maybe on higher difficulties he takes some of your equipment, experience points, and a random vampire familiar but more than anything else this is just an annoying detour when it happens. The Wraith's presence ties into the main story in an interesting way but beyond that his inclusion seems pointless. I kinda get what the developer was going for. A lot of survival horror games have that one unkillable monster or unkillable ghost to ramp up the tension. The problem is The Wraith is not truly scary and simply interrupts you on your way to complete quests.

While the over-world is fascinating and alive with personality the dungeons tend to be very repetitive. Almost all the floors for each given zone look very copy-paste with ever so slight alterations in the overall lay-outs. Meanwhile enemy-mobs can literally spawn in on top of you. It's nothing you cannot overcome with enough grinding and equipment managing but it gets cumbersome on those longer stretches. To add insult to injury there are cheap foes that can one-shot you if you do not take them out at a distance fast enough.

Despite my qualms the fact Bill has made all these games by himself is nothing short of incredible. He has single-handedly created an alternative universe for the people like me whom were huge fans of White Wolf's "World Of Darkness". If you can forgive a game with the typical quirks associated with older dungeon-crawlers I highly recommend this one!

To the developer

Things I dig

+ The world building and the lore accentuate and enhance the core experience amicably.

+ Finally, another dark fantasy horror themed dungeon crawler within a modern setting!

+ Once you get engrossed it's very hard to put down!

+Boss fights are generally well thought out.

+ A weirdly wonderful bestiary of creepy-crawlers!

My criticisms

-Why do all the clothes I find on BloodLust's mean streets look like Good-Will cast-aways? Why can't I make my vamp look sexy and seductive? I understand this may have been to project a more realistic-down-on-your-luck-in-the-ghetto-aesthetic but I'm just not feeling it. Saintsrow 2 and 3 would be good references for inspiration when considering customization and accessory options in a future game.

-I wish the dungeons had fewer floors with less repetitive ways to progress. Additionally the "enemy-mob-balance" is very mercurial in its' abrupt fluctuations!

-Certain hints and tips alluding to main-story-line-missions could be vague or misleading. However, I prefer some detective work over too much hand holding. I was able to figure out things eventually. Exactly how much a game should go out of its' way to be accommodating is going to vary subjectively from person to person. It can be quite the undertaking to hit that "just right" margin of the goldy-locks-zone!

- The Wraith is a good concept in theory but annoying in practice!
