This has an unsatisfying end game but the power creep while leveling is enough to keep you engaged. I don't like that most builds BiS are fairly common drops where as in D3 or other Diablos some of the builds aren't elite until you get those drops. My first character a Blitz warlord has the two most important items dropped off two monsters in Act 1 that make the build go and after that its just constantly getting more powerful. I'd like to see them throw in legendaries that make these builds even better because its too easy to build out your character to max. Campaign is super short which is good considering you have to run it 2 or 3 times and the class builds that I've played are fun. (Elementalist and Blitz Warlord)
Great diablo-like. Unfortunately I haven't found the time to play this big beefy game but from what I have experienced in the hour I played, you can easily lose so much time in this.
Especailly coming from PoE-2, this is amazing. Why? Because this is how loot is supposed to be. From the very beginning on you just get pounded with loot and it's amazing. Then there's really weird things like... more storage, easy and cheap re-spec, non-disappearing portals, and non-respawning enemies, no fodder enemies that can kill you, no flasks... and possibly the best part: every DLC combined is less than one backpack in PoE2 lol.
I don't mean to have so much vitriol about PoE2 but it's just terrible as far as games like this go. And Grim Dawn is everything you'd want. Granted I don't have a ton of time in the game yet, but enough to know that I'm having way more fun with this. When you add that the game was a mere $2.50, it makes it all the better. I bought all DLC at full price to support it, personally.
If there was anything I would change, it would be that green loot is better than yellow, and that's just a super weird choice. In every loot game you play its grey < green < blue < purple < yellow < orange... in this game it seems to be grey < yellow < green < blue < purple < (and possibly orange, not that far yet). I can't see any reason to do this except to make players think the loot they're getting is better than it really is due to years of programming.
Lastly, I wish there was more direction, and less maze-like connections between areas. Those also feel like they're done purely to slow you down, which never feels good. The game is big enough that it wouldn't make anyone play less if they could simply walk straight. But again... 500 times better than PoE2 who scrambles and resets the map when leaving the area, so if you portal to town and then gamble trying to get a usable piece of loot that's not 25 levels below your level for too long, and your portal disappears, have fun starting over.
This game is really boring honestly - I really liked it before it seemed like it had content and lore and random farm type gameplay but it kinda gets tedious and there's obviously alot of looking up guides on the internet in order to find the right steps or knowledge in order to understand gameplay elements - it's very easy to make a wrong step that you could only really know if you had intense knowledge about game mechanics - that's just not really well explained in game.
It's very boring - It's very common that you'll go through a whole area and just destroy every enemy in one shot, and then there's an enemy at the end that requires 10 more levels in order to fight, that will one shot you and has 1 million times the health of every other enemy -
The drops seem extraordinarily common, very little rare drops, and the rare drops you do seem to get drop very frequently with very little variation in benefit variance..
Things are just not explained in game, there's a website linked in-game to the guide page and I guess I could go look at it for a couple of hours to understand but ... really it should be easy to follow and explained in game right?
I had weird black screen issues going in that would sabotage my gameplay - changing it to windowed mode seemed to fix it -
And honestly a big problem I have with it as a whole is that mainly everything, and quite possibly lore and content, like reading content, is completely skippable with no consequences, you can sell 99% of items you find and it seems like there's genuinely no consequence, like those items aren't really crucial or important, you'll always find some other mediocre item - So it's sort of bloated up with what I would call fake or facade-content that isn't really more indepth or something you can chew on or experiment with - lots of the lore and reading content is boring conversations that don't really do anything and aren't really important, much of the early dialogue is going over quests I already finished just by playing.
So it's extremely linear and everything you are supposed to do is just in your path and you can already figure out what you need to do before you ever get the quest anyway because it's in your path.
The normal gameplay is completely too easy, except for some extreme difficulty curves that are very confusing - the first boss, krieg the warden, is very difficult, so I skipped him and went along another path and low-and-behold finished the next 20 quests and explorations that were supposed to come after him, too easily ..
Game starts out OK, but becomes quickly repetitive and grindy, and ultimately tedious, with the state of the game reset (in terms of enemies killed) every time you exit and restart.
There is little enough sense of ultimate narrative purpose as it is, and any sense of progression within the narrative is defeated when the player forced to grind their way, yet again, through already well explored areas just to return to whatever challenge they had left incomplete when last playing. The only workaround seems to be to never exit the game - which is hardly a practical solution for those who use their computers for other things.
Multiplayer is also a bit of disaster - when it does not trigger a black screen, it is impossible for the public to actually play on ANY of the supposedly 'open' servers.
Despite their declared open status, apparently (according to the GD forums) the online player culture is such that only friends of the host are typically ever welcome to play on them - all others attempting to join are simply banned immediately, with no reason given.
In fairness this seems to be a product of a reportedly toxic player community rather than a software issue - though I would have thought that the developers would by now have recognised the impact such behaviour has on perceptions of the GD experience and designed a way around it, or at least instantiated a policy preventing such rudeness.
Bottom line is that anyone hosting a declared 'public' game server using this software should actually welcome the public as a condition of use. Hosts who want only their own friends to join can easily use a password to make their server private.
Yep. Just a fun ARPG to pass the time while listening to good audiobooks while playing, helps me focus on what I listen to and relax.
It is not too much nor too little, its just perfect. It is certainly not POE but thats a good thing for some, also its super cheap, just get it on sale and play through it. There is replayability and builds to explore. Many side quests. For some it may feel dated but for others it feels like another classic ARPG.
Play the game
Remembers the Old Days
Its like Diablo

Everything is confusing

Still Enjoy
Great Game
Definitely a hidden gem. I don't know how I have managed to avoid this game for so long but at the same time I happy I get to learn a whole new wonder ARPG. I didn't think I would be able to enjoy a game that looked like that (it is almost 10 years old ofc) so much.
Grim Dawn: A Gem in the ARPG Genre
- For fans of genre games like diablo, titan quest, van helsing, path of exile and so on. you must try GRIM DAWN, many new elements are added in this game.
- No online "games as a service" rubbish. I can play this game on a 10 year old laptop in the middle of antarctica. There is no always online, there are no season to get FOMO over, there's no cash shop constantly being pushed into the game. It's just a good game that I enjoy playing.
- Best class(dual)/skill/devotion system I've seen yet, best itemization I've seen yet, within the most satisfying physics despite "old" age, atmosphere, especially in forgotten gods expansion. Quality of everything, lack of bugs, good balance of everything (comparing to other games of the genre), immense single player content, variety of builds and how different they can get, and how customizable they can be, you can make your own builds work to this date, etc. It just doesn't get boring as quickly as anything else I've played from the genre ever, newer or older. 2nd best is Titan Quest - same engine, same team game. Can't wait for Titan Quest 2.
- Engaging Storyline: The game's narrative is compelling, with rich lore and a dark, atmospheric world that draws you in from the very beginning. The post-apocalyptic setting is beautifully crafted, and the unfolding story keeps you hooked as you uncover the mysteries of Cairn.
- Deep Customization: Grim Dawn excels in its character customization. The dual-class system allows for incredible flexibility and creativity in building your character. Whether you prefer a tanky warrior, a spell-casting mage, or a hybrid of both, the game provides endless possibilities to tailor your hero to your playstyle.
- Community and Support: The Grim Dawn community is welcoming and active, always ready to share tips, builds, and advice. The developers, Crate Entertainment, are highly responsive and dedicated to improving the game, ensuring a fantastic experience for all players.
In conclusion, Grim Dawn is a must-play for fans of the action RPG genre. Its engaging storyline, deep customization, challenging gameplay, rich content, and stunning visuals make it a standout title that you won't want to miss. Whether you're a veteran ARPG player or new to the genre, Grim Dawn promises an adventure that will keep you captivated for countless hours.
I got it on sale for $2, and honestly it would have been worth paying full price. The game has so much content, and so much freedom to really make a unique build. I'll easily put 300 hours in this game.
I don't play many ARPGs, bought Diablo 4 a while back and just couldn't get into it. This one for whatever reason scratches the itch nicely. Plays great on a Steam Deck, I don't have to bust out an abacus to determine gear math.

If you found this review helpful, please give it a like or an award! Thanks for reading, and happy looting!
I didn't enjoy this one. Maybe I just made bad choices with my initial build (soldier), but after 5 hours every fight felt the same. Run in, bash until they die while using healing potions as needed. Maybe the game gets better later, but with such a slow start I can't recommend it.
Only played it for about four hours so far, but I'm thoroughly enjoying my time!
Gives me that Diablo 2 itch that no other ARPG has managed to do. The 'Devotion' tree system is a bit overwhelming at first but if you take a bit to read what everything does it makes a lot more sense.
I'd definitely recommend the game, especially with it's current discount.
This is a love letter to ARPG fans, there so much to explore and builds to do and if you get it on sale even better. enjoy!
I was blind buying the game cuz it was on sale, guess what.. I bought all the expansions 3 days after playing the game... LOL
Great game, easy to access ARPG with a good story. I prefer this to PoE and Diable
If you enjoyed the Ascent but wanted more depth this is the game for you. Truly a top 3 ARPG with the best devs in the industry.
Incredible Dungeon Crawler with no real gimmicks. Just go in, slash, loot, level. It's a blast! For the price you'll pay for it on sale? WELL WORTH IT!
Can a arpg be boring? I thought wrong. Grim dawn is the definition of boredom! Muddy graphics, strange classes, way to many attributes, way to many loot.

🔥 Are you ready to carve your path through the darkness and shape the fate of Cairn?
Beware, the store page of this game claims Full Controller Support and a Playable rating.
This is a lie.
This Game has partially working controller support at best.
This game was not made for controllers in mind.
The developers hacked a barely functioning alpha version into the game a couple of years after release and never iterated on it.
Crate Entertainment is clearly not interested in controller users. This is completely legitimate, it is their business decision.
What is not acceptable is the plainly wrong 'Full Controller Support' tag here on Steam by Valve and the 'Playable' rating that goes along with it.
You will not be able to play this game on the Steam Deck (unless you connect an external mouse/keyboard).
The Playable rating is undeserved and it should be downgraded Unsupported and the 'Full Controller Support' should be downgraded to 'Partial Controller Support'.
Don;t bother if you have a handheld or wish to use a controller
Terrible on steam deck on the latest updates. Controllers are abhorrent, with cursors being invisible, face buttons not showing regardless of rescaling UI as well as the fact the controls are extremely buggy with a controller. A fix online was to simply change the controller set which would help in displaying the face button prompts but that would whack out the controls and exaggerate the invisible mouse cursor.
Moreover, a temporary fix is to reschedule the right trackpad to mouse however this game was not designed to work using both a mouse and a controller at the same time, making it gruesome to navigate as half the UI disappears as it is laid out differently for MKB or Controller.
TLDR; There is no way to play this game comfortably with a controller; especially on handheld consoles as this issue persists on the ROG Ally as well. Another note was a salty employee on the forums who gave a stupid response, and instead of helping moved the bug report into the community section of the forum on the DEVELOPERS SITE. Zantai @ Crate
I only paid $2.49 but I am really enjoying this game. It is just a nice single player focused ARPG with some neat classes. I’m playing demolitionist, so I am heaving grenades and shooting fire through my guns. Combat is slightly involved so you can hit the zone but not be bored. Action controls feel solid on the Deck. Menu controls are struggling a bit, but I’m dealing with it. As it is old I like how it doesn’t tax the battery.
The perfect game to end the year for me.
This game brings it all honestly. It is a hack and slash like we know. However it is so smooth! Story is fun, you can get deeper into the story with reading all the lore, if you want to. The characters are very diverse too. I guess ppl compare this to Diablo... well it is just like it, but then it is it's own game. Absolutely not worse in quality! (Diablo was just lucky in how wide it was played. But after D2... Well... Haha) Grim Dawn seems to be unlucky in how it has been doing since release, cause it deserves at least the same attention!
If you like this type of game, you will LOVE this game. I bought it a while a go and now it is only €2,49. But the full price of €24,99 is also worth it! You can prolong your time in the game with DLCs that ppl seem to love, I am not there yet, since I wanna finish it first. But damn this game is just RLY good all on it's own.
i am constantly stressing about inventory management, what items i want to keep and such. but this game rocks nonetheless
If you love Diablo 2 / 3 and want more of that, just buy the game already. It scratches the itch VERY nicely, and the built-in multi-classing is very fun. Its already a 9/10 for me and I havent even hit the dlc or endgame content yet.
Very cool game!
Just like Titan Quest... only better... and, uhh, different.
How so, you say?
Better:
Feels like I endlessly click a lot less for my mediocre/confusing rewards to help decide what lifestyle best fits me. (See my Titan Quest review ;) They added a sweet feature to minimalize clicking. Hold down the left mouse (move/attack) and you will move until the cursor is over an enemy and you start attacking!! SWEEEET
The Magic system allows me to rely moron spells instead of constant melee/ranged attack. And so far I'm enjoying the variety of the magical system.
Different:
The eerie/creepy setting is perfect. The mellow background music keeps me immersively calm. The variety of creatures and their attack styles never dulls. Only 6 hours in and I'm hooked and will be playing this for a long time... the world is huge!
Claims "Full Controller Support". Pish posh.
The UI/UX is clearly designed for mouse/keyboard, there's no controller auto-detect, and the controller is used as a mouse.
Which is as much fun as it sounds.
I can't speak for the endgame but I bought this game with the DLCs as part of the Winter Sale for around $25 and 14 hours in I literally can't get enough, it has consumed me. Such a wonderfully addicting gameplay loop I think everyone who casually enjoys ARPGs can get a lot of playtime out of this title. Looking forward to many more hours!
Its like diablo, except for the fact it isn't diablo 10/10
Played a few ARPGs over the past 25 years since Diablo 1, and I can honestly say GD has probably the best balance of mechanic complexity, loot drops/farming, and power. They're still updating the game to make it balanced, streamlined, and fun.
All builds are viable, loot drops are generous without being too easy/devauled, and the endgame is straight-forward but rewarding. There's also plenty of secrets and hidden areas/bosses to keep you interested. GD is also very accommodating of levelling multiple characters with transferable item storage and faction rep booster items, so you don't have to strain yourself for subsequent characters after your first completes the story.
A must for any ARPG fans. There's an expansion coming in 2025 so there's years of support left for this game.
The graphic might not be to the very high standards of 2024/2025, but the core gameplay is still one of the best.
If you like ARPGs and/or Diablo I highly recommend. Unlike POE1/2, LE, Diablo 4, etc this doesn't fit the live service model and focuses on a handcrafted world where you can play at your own pace by yourself or with friends. The world has a lot to explore and discover, and I highly recommend the expansions. It did come out in 2016 but still receives regular updates with a new expansion coming soon. There's also a pretty active modding scene as well that I have yet to check out
Hands down one of, if not, the greatest ARPG ever made. If you've never played this, and you're looking to scratch that ARPG itch, just do yourself a favor and buy this game now, dlc too if you can swing it. You won't be disappointed.
so much fun, replayability. love this game.
Diablo, POE, etc have all been great but this is the ARPG i just keep coming back to. Game feels good and dual classing is sick, just play it already.
I used to love Diablo but in recent iterations of the franchise, playing DIablo felt like a chore.
I hate Seasons and Season Passes. Microtransaction can suck my dick. Having to rely on FOMO to make players want to play your game just shows your incompetence in regard to being able to make a fun and engaging game on its own.
This game is fun. Period. Hours and hours of fun. The artstyle is up my alley and the world feels handcrafted with lovely details.
Buy this game, if you are into arpgs. Support creators, that actually make games for the sake of making a good game they themselves love.
Kudos to Crate Entertainment. Will buy the addons soon.
This is my first ARPG and what a gem of a game this truly is.
At first I was a bit underwhelmed thinking this type of game is not for me. But I still kept playing and a couple of hours in I was hooked when I started tinkering with builds balancing elemental damage and resistances. Then came the time to select a second class to pair with the mechanics of the first and I was completely sold on this game.
Seriously, this is a great game with deep mechanics and high replay value and if you a fan of any type RPGs you owe it to yourself to at least try it for a couple of hours.
not gonna lie, this dawn isn't looking so good, it's looking rather grim, actually
Had fun, something I couldn't say for PoE2
But actually amazing and a fun arpg, 100% must play for a fan of the genre
This game is between D3 and PoE for difficulty. Decent story, somewhat forgiving combat. I like the fact that there are factions and most of them don't get along.
This is the first ARPG I've ever played and I have to say I struck gold from the get-go...
It's currently one of the best on the market, if you usually play ARPGs getting this game is a no-brainer.
If you are one of the people who want to get into ARPGs this is a great start
due to the fact that the game is so polished in aspect of pretty much everything, gameplay, mechanics and level progression.
The mechanics may seem a little complicated with the 3 bajillion skills, attributes and items there are, not to mention the devotion system and the different classes you can pick,
but if you actually read the descriptions or just glance over and pick the ones with huge power-ups you will most likely be fine.
The start is a bit rough but once you level up a bit you can unlock skills that you can either equip and use in combat either in passive.
In the base game there are 6 classes which you can pick: Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist and Shaman;
The DLCs add 3 more classes in total: Inquisitor, Necromancer and Oathkeeper;
Once you leveled up enough you can pick up to two classes and become a fused mastery of the classes you picked.
I personally picked Soldier and Arcanist and became a Battlemage for my first build, because I wanted to have a wide variety of skills that are both long-ranged and melee.
I suggest picking the same if you are a new player because it is a very safe and powerful combination in my opinion.
The Devotion System is a beast of its own, to unlock devotion bonuses, you have to restore shrines, which at first can be easily found and restored but once you explore enough and enemies get tougher,
you will mostly find them in dungeons and caves that are full of enemies.
In order to restore said shrines you either have to deal with an extra wave of enemies either give a special item depending on the location of the shrine.
Everytime you level up you get one attribute point, which you can add to either physique, cunning or spirit;
spending points on physique will give you more health and health regen, using them on cunning will give you extra damage and on spirit it will give you extra energy in the bar below,
extra energy regen and energy damage, energy is used by classes that use magic-based attacks like the Occultist and Arcanist;
spending points on any of these three will give you additional health too.
Some items require you to have a specific level or a specific number of points spent on a specific attribute in order to equip them so be wary of that.
The world building is honestly great, I never found myself being lost and the fact that once you explored through an area enough,
you can find portals that send you back to your base and vice-versa, so you won't have to walk through all of that again to reach the next destination.
Also there being two maps, one local map of the world with all the portals and one that's in real time is a genius move.
As of writing this review I still have a long way to the end of the game so im still pretty excited to see what else is there.
You can mostly go through waves or normal enemies with ease but, once you reach a boss you should be careful, because who knows what kind of attacks it will use and if you don't have resistance against that attack you will lose health fast and die (I speak from experience).
Always proceed with caution and be ready to dodge especially in inclosed spaces like caves or dungeons. Dying isn't such a big of a deal either and you can recover some EXP lost if you get back to the place where you died, not to mention that if a boss killed you and you get back to its location, he will be there and you will not lose progress on their health bar.
The replayability of this game is very high due to the fact that you have so many possible combinations of classes weapons and items,
the multiplayer and the DLC content up the replayability factor as well, so if you are here for a fun time you will certainly have a long time too.
The things that I hate about this game are mostly related to optimization rather than gameplay,
for example I noticed that if I select the x64 version when I boot the game every so often I use the shortcut for Steam Overlay the game crashes and I lose progress.
Other aspects about the gameplay that I don't really hate but find mildly annoying are:
most of the dungeons don't have portals and if you deploy a personal portal it doesn't really stay there after you go through it;
there are certain dungeons that require you to craft keys to open gates and proceed further,
but everytime you die and you want to go through that gate again you have to craft another key to open it.
The game is still being worked on with a DLC in the works even after all this time,
which shows the love and compassion the developers have for this game and optimization problems can be tweaked eventually.
Overall Grim Dawn is an excelent ARPG and I recommend it.
Grim Dawn is a smooth as glass experience. Combat is quick and gripping. Leveling happens frequently and is diverse and satisfying. After 40 hours of gameplay I have experienced zero bugs.
Where titan quest feels out of date and clunky, Grim Dawn remains fresh and a solid game. Heck even the story going on is interesting, if a bit vague but the environment and enemies tell much of the tale of Grim Dawn. The main game is not terribly long which is good as you will want to start over again and try a new build out.
I have a few hours in this game, beat it about 4-5 times. Insane replay-ability, lots of different class combos, cool looking weapon and armor. Overall a solid 8.5/10 for me. Feels like a "modern" take on Diablo 2. Satisfied the disappointment from Diablo 3
Yeah, its a great game and all. If you're looking for that classic Diablo flavor without having to mess with that battlenet garbage, then its a good time.
However, the in-game map needs the same "Area Names" option as the map on the grimtools website. Not a fan of having no idea where to go for a quest, the in-game map being useless, and having to tab out to the browser just to figure out where to go. Maps need labels to be useful!
I like the being able to advance in a class in the game also I recommend this game to players who enjoy advancing classes and abilities.
Grim Dawn is my first ARG, but i absolutely love it. Coming from games like borderlands, the looter shooter aspect is exhilerating as always. and picking this up just after playing Bloodborne, the dark monsterous setting is also incredible. They don't call it GRIM dawn for nothing
Pretty okay game, but Diablo 4 is much much better, missing all the Microtransactions.... said no one ever!
Grim Dawn is what I look for in a game of that kind... hundreds of builds, different playstyles and most importantly, my favorite one... dual wield pistol build, something no other game of that kind had till now.
I can recommend Grim Dawn to both newer players looking to get into that kind of games or veterans who are looking for something to sink their teeth in. With a dedicated, albeit small, community, you also do not have a shortage of guides and builds!
Just come in, grab a drink and enjoy the game!
Great game, one of the best ARPG's out there.
