A surprisingly well-written and responsive game. Broadway: 1849 is a fun and pulpy period piece that while stumbling with believability at times is generally a well-crafted and well-paced game. There's plenty of choice here and it does feel rewarding when you make things go your way, and the book is best at the beginning and end since the middle does slump a bit in quality.
Overall it was good, the characters were largely memorable but I do wish we got to see a little more real development with them, only Miller and Nell really get a lot of development but the others are still nice for what they have. The epilogue was a tad bit long but still a good sendoff and I didn't actually notice many typos in the game which is quite rare for these games.
Around 6-7 hours of fun, I'd give it a read even if it doesn't fully pay off everything its still a good book.
A very interesting and novel game, Enjoyed the use of real historical figures, gangs and landmarks. A handful of bugs toward the end, but nothing that ruins the game. Written extremely well. Could do with more choices, but overall really enjoyed it.
Run Your Own Theatre - Your Choices Matter
Broadway: 1849 is a text-based game from Choice of Games, where there's no music or graphics and your imagination can run free. You now manage a theatre all your own and must make important choices when it comes to plays, actors to hire, and factions to please or ignore. Will you survive your first season?
While not as, perhaps, hands on like Hollywood Visionary (another great game by Choice of Games - which I loved), it has a unique vibe and feel to it where you can choose to seek the trust of the elite or the everyday man, hold secrets or sell out to help your theatre thrive. The political climate that surrounds such means of entertainment is almost educational in a way for the game and it really allows for you to seek out who you are as a character and test the boundaries of entertainment in the mid 19th century.
I just finished my first playthrough and while there were at least one plot thread that didn't really go anywhere, and at some points it felt like the game didn't treat my character quite as I had been playing them, on the whole I enjoyed it and will definitely give it more playthroughs.
I've expected something like "Hollywood Visionary" - where you will be able to focus mainly on your passion project (in this case the theater), make a lot of smaller and bigger decisions and see what comes as a result of them. Sadly, the plot is extremely distracting. There are way to many characters that seem to have zero impact on your business, until the games arbitrarily reward you for helping them. The romance feels... off (especially if you play as gay character, given time period and how openly can you flirt with someone during literally first meeting) and for some reason I was able to successfully romance character, that had like 36% sympathy for me, which is hilarious. Writing is solid, but the story itself would get much better if it was more focused on managing your theater, instead of politics, ghost and large amount of social commentary.
Sadly, I cannot recommend it.

Poor... I've bought several games from this producer, and, in fact, the first was very good, but the others...
The problem is that you seem to have quite no choice on what is happening in the story and what will happen.
Your actions could lead to a "modest" success or... to a complete disaster!
Every wrong decision counts too much and, at the end, it become only frustrating to continue playing it.
And, I also fail to understand the logic behind many outcomes of your choices.
For the story itself, it's not bad, but it's a bit of everything: social drama, riots, characters from the work of literarature, theatre, and so on... and ghosts, homicides, secret meetings and arsons!
Too much to create something that stick together.
And... if I'm playing Broadway: 1849, why I have to manage a theatre, fight the criminality, change the course of social history and constantly save people from... all of kind of problems?
Does this make any sense?
Sorry, it's not a good game and only a pretty modest story.
I have playing this game none stop to right now at chapter 6, I must say this writer : Mr.Robert Davis he is good. Not just good at writting a convictive story (which is not easy at all), he also good at letting the player to decide how the personality and methodology of the main character would be, this makes player feel related to the character rather than just play as someone. More to that is those choices player made by situation and events does effect the game in a big way, the Mr. Davis writes different part for different choice rather than just replace some names, for example your first big play, you are gaven the choice to chooce a leading star, each of them will have different story line as some sort of side quest, and you can only choice one at a time, and your choice do make a big difference for your career in the game. This feels very rewarding, it is excellent game making concept and hard work (to write so many extra side story).
I would like to see more work come out from this writer, HE IS GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES.
As a text based game, I vote for 5 out of 5.
This historical game from Choice of Games is the definition of a sleeper. I've never felt this much tension and interest from a historical interactive novel before, or likely since, despite the ordinary first impression.

I'm currently on the fourth chapter and, as someone studying theatre, I am in love with this game. Slightly disappointed that it does not include my favorite playwright, Tennessee Williams, but then again he was not alive at this time. Perhaps you could make a second one WITH Tennessee Williams. I am also very much in love with his play "The Glass Menagerie." If you could make a sequel that has influences and appearances of playwrights in the era of American Realism, such as Tennessee Williams, I would definitely buy it. Perhaps "Broadway: 1949"? Or "Broadway: 1944"?

This was a exciting and well paced text adventure game. I look forward to more from this author.
