Yeah... NO. I'd write a more in detail review but I got to the second boss lost all 3 of my lives and noped out of this one. Since in a game requiring you to beat the game without damage once to earn an achievement I'm not putting myself through that kind of torture.
Great pixel art with a really awesome soundtrack. It's a short experience but really well made and enjoyable throughout.
This is a fantastic game with rock solid controls! I highly recommend this one for anyone looking for a great mega man / cave story style game. The sound track is all chip tune and is nicely composed. Great all around game!
A Small Robot Story is a pretty fun and fast paced platformer that feels properly modular in its speed and playstyle, but it has a particular preference in that style. The boss battles are pretty fun and they scale in difficulty appropriately.
Pros: The response time and fluidity of playing feels great. The pixelated art direction looks nice, and there is a lot of great animation. The music is really really good, especially the 3rd level. There is a lot of love and care in this release from the developer, and you can see it.
Cons: Areas are pretty sprawling, but the level design doesn't feel intuitive, so to say. They are certainly long enough, though. There is little reward for exploration aside from batteries, so there is little reason than to "run through the maze". Likewise, there is no reward really for killing enemies, either. This angles the playstyle to be fast, linear and pacifistic.
Overall, I really like the game. It was a lot of fun and because my initial playthrough didn't "catch" the desired playstyle until the last level, it will likely drive me to try other ways to beat it. It's not an incredibly long game, but for the price it's most certainly a good time.
This game is a cute little platformer. The controls are responsive and the world is fun.
I love this. The pixel art is great (especially the cutscenes), and the gameplay adds just enough challenge to make it fun without becoming overbearing. It's not long, but you'll have a great time playing it.
Pfoooh, I have to admit that this review is anything but easy to do. A Small Robot Story is an okay game. The artstyle is definitely on the NES-style. Controls are pretty tight and there is the nod to Mega Man. Why can't I recommend it though?
Frankly for as much as I would like to give it a positive review, there are simply too many instances where this game is a letdown. I'll try to summarize my gripes with it and then leave it up to you to decide if you want to buy it.
Gripes:
- The length of the game is frankly too short. If you fumble through the first playthrough due to reasons below or otherwise, that takes at most one hour. If you hunt for the achievements then at most you'll tack on another. At most, I reiterate, for you might not lose any continues on the first go. Just four levels to cross, each with three segments and a boss.
- The difficulty is also very low. Of all the enemies, only the bosses, the jumping bean and the charging tanklet give any challenge. Enemy AI is practically non-existent and their patterns, once spotted, are easily taken advantage of.
- The only real difficulty is in level design. There are tons of instant death pits and jumps that are tricky simply by the fact that the next platform is not (always) visible on screen when you stand on one.
- Sticking with level design, there's a lot of repetition in what graphical elements are used. There's less variety than say in an actual NES game like Jacky Chan's Action Kung Fu. The first two levels are the prettiest, but even there this holds true.
- Add in the fact that you have to slog through 3 segments in each and have to redo from the start if you use a continue... well, that gets old really quickly.
- No hidden areas, no camouflaged collectibles, nothing. Each level is filled with spots where a veteran gamer immediately wants to check/shoot/jump at to see if anything is hidden. Spare yourself this search, there's nothing there.
- The music is unmemorable and the story? Heh, heheheheh... nope.
Like this though
- The graphical style is nice, shame about there being so little variety.
[*]The controls are pretty good, though you need the keyboard q button to quit the game.
In conclusion, A Small Robot Story feels like an abandoned project that was 'finished' to make money. It could have been a great game had there been more levels, better enemies, better music and some hidden things to find. As it stands though, I do not recommend picking it up unless its on sale. Otherwise, go play Khimera for free.
What a nice game! I'll admit I'm a sucker for story-based games and platformers alike, and this one makes me feel just a bit nostalgic for when I was beating Cave Story+ for the first time.
The arcade-y, roguelike system means that this isn't a game you save and pick up later. It's short-ish, but you have to complete it in one go. Effectively, you have nine lives, although the game's pretty generous with healing.
The learning curve is really satisfying: every time you get smashed to pieces in seconds by the level boss, you're thinking, how am I supposed to get past this? You'll probably get pulverized by each boss until you run out of continues once or twice, but then somehow you learn and react faster and beat it. It's not a strategy thing, it's a rhythm/reaction time/muscle memory thing. You don't have to think too much about it.
And it never takes so long that you get frustrated. Took me weeks to beat Cave Story's hell levels IIRC, but that isn't this game. Steam says it took me just under 6 hours (collectively) to beat it. The restart/replay system means that the game effectively adjusts to how fast you learn; if you're not getting it, you're forced to practice on easier levels until you're better with the controls.
Aesthetically, it's a really nice game. (Spoilers on in case you want the art/aesthetics for levels 2 and on to be a surprise.) It doesn't seem like it's going to be at first, because you're dumped in kind of a generic-looking robot factory for the first stage, but that's not going to last long. You move on to a couple more natural settings, which are unexpected for a game about robots; they're not terribly unique as settings but they're well executed. And then you get to Helix's labs. Holy cow, it's like OFF, Undertale's True Lab, and a paint factory from the 90s smashed together into a delightfully creepy neon weird-land. From this point on, the setting is wild and the enemies are wilder.
Oh, and the story is really endearing too. I can't say much about it without getting into spoilers, but the characters are sympathetic and it's got an interesting narrative.
Definitely worth $5. Go for it!
A Small Robot Story is a quick game that has a ton of heart and packs a hard punch. The game is well paced, upping the ante in difficulty with every level, while also giving the player new abilities after every boss fight which gives much needed variety in a genre that is otherwise sometimes stagnant. Overall it's a solid experience with a great soundtrack, and a story that actually has some unexpected twists and turns. Absolutely worth it for a nostalgic evening in.
Great robot action! Great ear music!
I must be getting old because I can't beat this game! Still lots of fun though.
Cute fun little game that you should buy if you're interested in mega man style platforming games and or supporting indie developers
A nice little game! Plays quick, is simple, has a solid 8-bit charm to it.
ASRS is satisfying at every turn, with it's amazing chip-punk soundtrack and retro graphics. The gameplay is precisely tuned, evoking megaman and other platformers from that era. If you're looking for an extreme platforming challenge, this game might not be for you, but if a fun, retro styled adventure is what you're after, this game is perfect.
A Small Robot Story is a great retro-styled platformer, and if you're a fan of Mega Man or Mario, you should definitely give it a shot.
