Really fun, relatively short action adventure with physics puzzles, light metroidvania elements and a great offbeat sense of humor to balance out the dark aspects. I especially loved the boss fights. And, unlike most metroidvanias, it never got overly difficult. Play the demo -- if you like it, you will like the full game.
Only some minor complaints:
- It can be easy to forget (or not realize) where to go next. A map could've helped, but due to the simple layout I understand why they didn't think it was necessary. Youtube walkthroughs are your friend.
- Some of the moves (like jumping off a skateboard) can be tricky to pull off which makes the timed physics puzzles a little frustrating.
- Most of the achievements are easy to miss or unavailable on your first playthrough. But due to the linear nature, it's not the kind of game you'll be dying to play twice.
Really wish there was a "mixed" option, but I'm leaning negative because I was mostly frustrated and annoyed.
The music, sound and art are all great! Lots of charming moments and gimmicks here and there, as well as some great horror elements. My favorites include:
- Pinwheels (and most items you can whack).
- The granny bird boss.
- The Speak-N-Say toy.
- Most of the cosmetics.
- A playable piano.
However, there are a lot of baffling design choices that I couldn't stand:
- Your melee attack swing only covers a tiny distance.
- There are no I-frames, so you can take multiple hits in one attack.
- The E key interacts and starts dialogues, but only clicking or the spacebar continues them.
- Save points don't heal (Not every game does this or even needs to, but for this one it would've only been helpful)
- Swinging physics work well horizontally, but there's some parts that expect you to pull off more vertical movement.
- Small variety of simple enemies, and some sections just throw 5-6 of the same one at you simultaneously.
- The currency sometimes clips through the floor.
- Some puzzles/areas that were tough to get to or pull off provided no reward.
- Lots of pointless "Should I grab it?" or "Should I read it?" instead of just grabbing it or reading it.
- Bosses are all boring and/or frustrating. Many are dependent on waiting for one attack to happen before they're even vulnerable, but they idle around and just do nothing way too long and way too often. And instead of the typical "kill in 3 hits" method, they all take 5 to kill.
- The final boss has some attacks that are not telegraphed at all. You will very likely get hit and/or die from them your first time.
- Most dialogues just take too long, especially if you're waiting for the voice read to finish.
- Lots of areas that force you to backtrack often or take a longer route than needed.
- The bonus theater presentation at the end showcasing the original flash game came across as just long-winded and pretentious. I'm all for having something akin to concept art or an easter egg or even a quick note/segment about it, but rambling on and on about it (for 9+ minutes) is obnoxious.
5/10 I'd still recommend this if you're interested, as I'm sure I don't like this as much as others will. But I personally did not enjoy this one very much and will not be playing again.
So I actually only played this for about 20 minutes, not 50. Before, it wasn't even properly starting. But this time, it worked. I played for maybe 10 minutes until I realised that apparently I had missed several little hints and puzzles that were all absolutely necessary for the progression. I had to read online what I had missed and how to find it BUT I didn't find a way back at all! I had to make a new save file because everything was blocked and there was no way of finding the clues and items and stuff anymore! In the new save file, I tried just reading along on a walkthrough I found on the internet to make sure it's even possible to progress but that just took all the fun out of it. The artstyle and music was very promising tho, so I would've loved if the developers would've thought about issues like that more.
This game is deep. I needed a game that was not intense to get through a hard week I hard. Perfect game to purchase.
its pretty and nostalgc
If you played the original Flash game like I did, you will love this. So far, this game has taken me down memory lane back to when I was in 3rd grade. When I had the opportunity at lunch to go to the library and use the computers, when Flash games were popular back then. I would always find myself coming back to this little game called Coma, a game that I could never understand the full story probably because I was too young. I recently played the original flash game on another website, that's when I found out that the developer had created Neversong, which was a direct remake of that original game. I'm in university now, but I knew I had to get this game.
I haven't finished it yet, but so many lovely characters have made a return, as well as familiar locations and music. I'm really enjoying the game and I would sooooooo recommend it even if you didn't play the original.
good enough. i like the story
This game is sadly very mediocre at best. I don't even put this review as a positive or a negative, it just felt rather lackluster and left me unsatisfied with its end. And as someone who adores Pinstripe, I was really hoping I'd get the same feel from this game, but that isn't the case. While the music and art is amazing as ever, the gameplay was wonky and some of the puzzles were frustrating to get through. Once you know what you're doing (which can be fairly quick), the boss fights are extremely easy to fight and don't give off much of an actual challenge if that's something you're looking for. The story felt very disjointed, and I wasn't sure what I was following until the end parts of the game. After I finished the game I had to look up online of how I was supposed to connect the story and get from other peoples' analyses on it. Neversong is certainly a game I don't hate, because there were moments I found it to be enjoyable. However, it is a game I would not replay ever again, including since there's no real motivation on collecting all the cards or achievements unless you want to 100% it. Like other reviews, I'd rate the game at a 5/10, and only recommend it if its on sale.
So I absolutely loved Pinstripe. The art, the music, the story, it was wonderful. Of course I was excited to play Neversong! Unfortunately, it just didn't hit the mark for me.
The story is lackluster and simple, the puzzles are more annoying than fun, the ending isn't satisfying, and the boss combats are soooooooooo boring. I'm not happy I spent the money on this. It's more of a $5-$8 experience than $15. Buy it when it's on sale, but not at full price.
For someone. Not for me.
This game frustrated me. Along with the story you want to know, the talented visuals, the very beautiful music and voice acting, we are faced with the "programming miracles" of this game. Bugs where you get stuck in unexpected location places and can't do anything about it. The weird ability to confirm via space instead of enter (and no control selection to change it). If it was a fresh game from an unknown developer, I would raise the topic in the community hub and report some bugs... But I go to the community and see that people have already done this many times.
Come on, the game came out 4 years ago and it could be even better!
Also, it is impossible to ignore the fact that there are many places in the game where you are forced to wait an unconditionally long time to perform some action. This is somewhat annoying while you are playing, I started playing the game in 2021 and abandoned it precisely because of this.
However, this is the case when cool animation, music, voice acting and plot overcome shortcomings. But be prepared for bugs, so be patient.
I played the original Coma game many times as a kid, mostly for the atmosphere bringing me in and the music. While i was a tad disappointed some things aren't the same, and there are differences from the original, I do appreciate the work put in to make a new version of it. Personal opinions aside, its a fine game, despite its bumps here and there with storytelling. Pretty game.
I loved this game with its creepy vibe, mixing eerie visuals and goofy immature humor that made me laugh. The story’s short, which is great if you’re an adult looking to actually finish a game. It’s simple, memorable, and perfect for a quick, fun gaming session. Highly recommend Neversong.
