Nullysun is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This particular shovelware is from the asset flippers at Metal Fox, famous for stealing the assets from real developers and slapping their own name on it, to scam you into paying them for someone else's work. Nullysun is just a copy + pasted "ball rolling" platformer puzzle game made by copying a basic platformer template in Unity, probably no more than a weekend's effort, but this should be no surprise given the "developer" and their prior record here.
Metal Fox/Nullysun Studio have a known history of trying to scam people into paying them money for someone else's work, through this account or through closely linked/alt accounts. An example of Metal Fox/Nullysun Studio doing this is Inaccessible world, which is really "Ultimate Survival", written by the actual developers, Winterbyte. Also, HecatoncheirStory, which is really "3D Game Kit", developed by Unity Technologies.
Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 10 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Nullysun is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price and the unethical nature of the developer, this is impossible to recommend.
ooh my god..
4/10
I found this game a while back. Only played a little bit ago.
Many people will not find this game.
But this game does exist.
And I know it did.
And I will love this game.
Forever.
(Seriously though, this is preety much a crappy flash game on steam. I only bought it because I had a coupon. Only get this game if you have a reason or something)
I'm kind of confused as to how this game even made it on to steam. It looks like a flash game from 2005, for starters. The music and sound effects are difficult to listen to. The controls are slippery and it's way too easy to be fun. It feels like somebody's first attempt at making a game, and if so, it isn't horrible. However, I don't see any good reason somebody should spend money on it. I understand it's only a dollar, but you can play many much better platformers on flash game websites for free. My advice to the developer: keep working on making games. This shows potential, and you can make something good if you put a lot of time and work into it. I really just didn't like the game.
Nullysun is a very primitive game. It's about on par gameplay wise as an early-2000's flash game. Despite this, it has the most charm out of any small indie game I've seen on Steam, even if some of it is basically stolen from other popular indie platformers. Even though it is most likely a person's first attempt at making a game in Unity, all of the assets are original and the cutscenes are actually quite good, and it even has an original soundtrack. Unfortunately there's some jankiness, and that's to be expected of a beginner's work in Unity, but underneath the jank and the questionable design choices, there's a cute little game that obviously had a lot of care and effort put into it. Although I would have liked it to be more polished and complete, the game that's there is enough to hold your attention for a little while and make you smile a bit at some of the minor things it does well. The first level captured my attention well and I thought I was in for a small indie game obviously inspirsed by Inside, but after that it turned into a pretty generic platformer. Again, for a novice attempt I'm actually stunned how well the first level and the cutscenes are done, and I would have liked to see more focus in that area than gameplay. I would recommend purchasing on the sole purpose of supporting a guy who seems like he just wanted to make a fun little game after being inspired by other fun little games. It's objectively not a very good game, even by flash game standards, but it's just unique enough in it's artstyle for me to feel confident in my purchase.
This game surly will find it friends... But not me... Not my kinda game.
If u can get it on discount, give it a try...
