It's one thing to know about a game that has affected the industry as much as Half-Life 2 as well as the episodes, but it is an entire other thing to actually experience and play it. I understand why so many people love it. Although I knew that the episode 2 cliffhanger was coming, it still felt like a gut-punch once it happened.
For more personal opinions, I do miss the speed of the first game. The slower movement is fine, I just wish that the sprint was faster. The guns don't feel as good as the original, but it is all worth it for the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator!
TL;dr: If you like first-person shooters, then go play the Half-Life series.
Game is good but has some issues of 'the player can do this' rather than 'the player will do this' in testing. Like a problem of how averages leave out outliers, and how your testing sample differs from the gaming population average, so there is a larger pool of outliers than expected.
Eventually relying on averages of data is just noise and misleading, because its averages of averages of samples. Eventually there is just more outlier than in-grouper. And thats when you fail, thats when philosophy fails, thats when institutions fail, thats when science fails. Its like an echo chamber. If you keep appealing to average, eventually you are appealing to just people who are too afraid to stand out in any way shape or form.
So designing a smooth experience tho, to impress upon journalists or something, that might not really require a multilayered approach. But for longevity more than just legend, you would want to have a multi-layer approach. Like, tall people exist too, need to make some tall clothes not just average american wide.
This isn't really anything new I'm saying and I don't wanna give a false impression of what kind of person I am. Like, Pyro and Sniper are examples of classes with lower skill floor. So I'm sure some have design philosophy already. Idk the costs of it. But if we look at how much players got the crowbar, vs, how many made it past that flood the room level, more than 20% of players were lost in that timeframe. I felt it, but I kept going. So just saying, there was some kind of assumption forming about how a person tries to problem solve, that effects the game pacing. And if the gamer doesn't know what Gman or the developers are expecting you to do, then they're just guessing n checking. And then if their guess could work part way but is artificially designed to not work, it just feels disincentivizing to think of creative solutions.
For example, oil floats on water, nice. Why does me jumping on a barrel in water make it explode? Its better, to let me go with my method through the pipe, then realize 'oh I need to fill this chamber with water to ascend.' Than to like, explode, and then be left wondering. When I was in the other room, I saw the health crate and my mind completely didnt notice the valve it was under. Perhaps this is a monkey trap of sorts. Adhd, or just being near-sighted so am not used to seeing wide, or perhaps my color saturation was a bit low so didn't notice the valve which was red. And, other ladders, sometimes I had that problem of visibility with to. But because of the sharpness of the edge of the steps of the ladder, them blending into their environment wasn't a big deal, but I think with different pc or settings it might have been too blended in. And this could explain the 20% dropoff.
So a real solution might be, to make jank rigs with jank settings and see how smoothly it plays. Like, a problem of over-standardization of testing perhaps. Maybe you could make a project computer that can emulate a wide variety of types of computers so you can rapidly test various experiences, without requiring multiple pcs or reassembly. But perhaps this problem is solved with the Steam OS stuff in a way.
Lol I'm not professional at anything I just like trying to understand random stuff sometimes.
The new update where they've combined all the games into one is broken. Right now I'm the middle of the chopper chase scene and the movement is jerky while the game is actually rendering at 120fps. I've seen this glitch in source games in the past, but HL2 had long since had those issues fixed.
Sorry Valve. Until you fix the issues, I'm leaving this up.
one of the best game's i ever played,i aready finished half life 2 and 1 [without saying the expansions as Blue Shift and Opposing Forces] and i can say, this is an VERY good fps game, how you move, how each character has an place in the story, like every thing in this game is good,i'm not even glazing it,is just an VERY VERY good game, and i fell happy for have buying this and other half-life's
Dude if your thinking of buying this game, DO IT. The Graphics hold up to this day, fights are well thought-out, there's INSANE mods too! Weapons feel great, so does the movement! The only issue i have with this game, is we don't get to have a drink with Barney after he said he owed us a beer
awsome game, graphics may need a little (alot) work on and it could have something that can help direct players in the right direction when they are stuck ,other then that, i aint got no problems with the game
I can't imagine how our gaming experiences would've turned out without half life 2 (maybe 3?), everything about this game is top notch, the graphic style, the level design and the soundtrack, i had a lot of great memories playing this masterpiece as a kid used to watch huge amounts of youtube videos related to it (i still do), this amazing game will still be one of my favorites and will live forever in my memory.
Play it if you want a shooter that feels perfect, if you're a game physics/puzzles enjoyer, or if you just want to understand games history. It really does hold up, but it will feel different than what people are used to today.
Game now has the episodes packaged into one .exe, workshop support, and developer commentary. This is a valve nerds game and deserves a visit or a revisit if it's been a while
Can't believe it took me so long to play this. I missed out on it back in the day and was a little worried when booting it up that it might not have aged well.
I was pleased to be wrong! It was brilliant from start to finish and kept me on the edge of my seat more than a lot of modern shooters have.
If you've been living under a rock like I was and haven't yet played this, it's a definite recommend!
Great game with great story
Clever sci-fi shooter mixed with a Zombie horror survival game.
I've had this game in my library for many years but never got around to actually play it. When the 20th anniversary patch was released I decided to finally play through it and the episodes.
At it's core it's a very good game that introduced many things that we now take for granted in modern games. It's easy to see why it has become a classic.
The presentation still holds up fairly well overall, but it is uneven.
- Architecture and design of the environments are great, but the low res textures and blocky meshes shows the real age.
- The gravity gun and all the physics puzzles are clever and fun, but there's a lot of jank when driving vehicles or interacting with squads.
It's a game that is trying to be two different things and I think it distracts.
- I like it when it focuses on the dystopian sci-fi part. It's a well written story with very satisfying gun-play and interesting enemies that acts realistically.
- But I don't like when it then switches over to a zombie horror survival game that focuses more on the jump scares.
And the fact that we're never going to see Episode 3 and a conclusion to the story sucks.
As good as the first Half-Life is, I think that Half-Life 2 and Its Episodes make up for more than a worthwhile continuation. This game feels so different from the first one, but the important details are equally as good. The gameplay design is still absolutely outstanding and the new elements that have been added make it even better. The enemies feel more fair and fun to fight, even if their overall variety is less than that of the first game. The art direction of this game is probably the main reason why I prefer this game over Half-Life. Every environment so gorgeous to look at and really helps to make Half-Life 2 a once in a lifetime kind of experience.
Amazing, i finally beat the full game, and im so glad they added workshop support so i could make the game look cooler, heres hoping that they release half life 3, hopefully before i get old
"Half-Life 2" is one of the most influential and groundbreaking first-person shooters ever made. Released in 2004 by Valve, it redefined what players could expect from a video game in terms of both storytelling and gameplay. The game’s narrative is immersive, unfolding without traditional cutscenes, which allows the player to feel like they are truly part of the story. The protagonist, Gordon Freeman, is a silent hero who navigates through a dystopian world filled with alien invaders and oppressive human forces. This unique approach to storytelling pulls the player into the game’s world, making every action feel meaningful.
The physics engine in "Half-Life 2" was revolutionary for its time. The way objects interact with the environment feels natural and intuitive, and it became a major part of the gameplay. From solving puzzles using physics to creatively using the environment as a weapon, it was an innovation that influenced many games that followed. The gravity gun, which allows players to manipulate objects in real-time, is still one of the most memorable and fun weapons in gaming history.
The level design in "Half-Life 2" is another standout feature. The game introduces players to varied environments, from the dark, industrial city of City 17 to the eerie, remote marshlands. Each location feels carefully crafted, with attention to detail that makes the world feel alive. The pacing is also masterful, alternating between moments of intense combat and slower, atmospheric sequences that allow the player to soak in the environment and story.
The AI in "Half-Life 2" was also ahead of its time. Enemies behave intelligently, using cover, working together, and reacting to the player’s actions in a way that makes combat more dynamic and challenging. The enemy variety, from the terrifying Combine soldiers to the creepy headcrabs, keeps the gameplay fresh and engaging. The interactions with NPCs and the world around you help build a sense of tension and immersion, keeping you on edge throughout the experience.
The game's soundtrack, composed by Kelly Bailey, perfectly complements the atmosphere, using subtle but effective music to enhance both the action and the quieter moments. The sound design is top-notch, with ambient sounds adding to the immersion, whether you're in a busy city street or exploring a deserted warehouse.
Ultimately, "Half-Life 2" is a masterpiece that still holds up to this day. Its innovative gameplay, storytelling, and technical achievements make it a game that set a new standard for the industry. It’s a game that’s not just fun to play, but one that’s easy to appreciate for the way it shaped the future of video games. Even though it’s been years since its release, "Half-Life 2" remains a classic that continues to inspire both players and developers alike.
Half-Life 2 is quite a game and i don't know what to say about it other than its a personal favourite. I think its one of my favourite of the Half-Life games just for all the upgrades it brings. The physics and all the new graphics and visuals. Its truly a great leap in the series and i love how far the story has come and how everything was ended nicely.
The story was more developed and the characters had more dialogue with each other and you saw some past characters return quite nicely. The aliens returned in this sequel to the first Half-Life and once again you had to beat them back. You are led through multiple chapters in the game defeating enemies and playing through some thought provoking puzzles as per the series standard.
One thing i miss is that the game ended on an unfortunate cliff hanger and so far there seems to be no sign of a sequel at all. The story needs finishing and has spent way to long without any news at all about its future and will be in limbo for some time.
The game without a doubt in my mind is the best in the series and one of my favourites. Its a easy game to recommend anyone try out and play in the future.
One of the best games of all time. You're using the game service that spawned because of their innovative ideas. Gaben please call me ill sell my bussy for less than you think ;)
A monumental game in my gaming career, Half-Life 2 was that defining experience that made me realise I was in for something next level. For the first time i picked it up on The Orange Box in 2008, and from the moment I booted it up, I knew I was in for a wild ride. It wasn’t just a game—it was an event. The environments were absolutely massive, the atmosphere was unreal, and the soundtrack? Edgy as hell. Every moment felt like a cinematic journey.
In Half-Life 2, you play as Gordon Freeman, arguably one of the most reluctant action heroes in gaming. You awaken from stasis, burdened with the trauma of the previous game, and are immediately thrust into action as the figurehead of an uprising. This isn’t a simple revolution—it’s a battle against a multiversal alien threat, shrouded in dystopian themes and orchestrated by secretive organizations manipulating events behind the scenes.
Set in a world dominated by the Combine, an alien regime that combines interdimensional authoritarianism with advanced technology, you must navigate a planet under their control. Armed with little more than a crowbar and your signature nonverbalism, Gordon becomes the key figure in the resistance. As you progress, you'll engage in intense combat, solve puzzles, explore diverse environments, and uncover the unsettling truth that nothing in this world is as it seems.
And let’s talk about The G-Man—a mysterious, interdimensional CIA glowman who pops up like a bad dream and probably controls the entire charade like a cosmic puppeteer. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he just playing the long game? Who knows, but he’s definitely got his hand in everything, watching Gordon like a hawk, pulling strings like an invisible god.
You’d think it’s just a sci-fi conspiracy, but after a while, you start questioning if anyone really knows what the hell is going on. Does G-Man even have a purpose, or is he just a cosmic observer who gets his kicks out of watching a man with a crowbar take on the end of the world?
The game’s narrative feels like a giant puzzle, and each step forward opens up even more questions, all while you’re tearing through enemy lines, trying to get answers. And the best part? It’s not all about combat—there are puzzles to solve, mysteries to uncover, and a sense of isolation that keeps you on edge, constantly wondering who or what will show up next. The pacing is incredible, making you feel like you’re a tiny piece of something far larger, with consequences that span across dimensions.
Now when the episodes are combines (haha) The user experience is smooth and now it is even moddable! 5/5
This game is still quite impressive and relevant even for it's age
this game is so good that i downloaded the whole game instead of the episodes
Best singleplayer FPS campaign of all time
I've loved this game since I was a kid and it never serves to disappoint in any of my playthroughs. Especially with the many mods that have been made over the years there is a never ending supply of entertainment to be had.
This game is possibly the best thing to have blessed my computer.
How many times have I been repeating this game? Too many times I lost count that's just how good this old game is, it may be old but don't underestimate it it is extremely fun to play, and I finally was able to buy it! And guess what IT WAS WORTH IT cause MODS HELL YEAH *Ahem* anyways getting off track here.
The game is simple and you can do so much just by playing this game over and over it just doesn't get boring well at least the waiting part is boring overtime lel but this is just one of those masterpiece in the old days and I'd say it earned that by just being simple and completely innovating into that simplicity.
All n all I give this gave a 10/10 will go to ravenholm to hunt some headcrabs again
It starts with one, one thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme to explain in due time
All I know, time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day, the clock ticks life away
It's so unreal, didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Tryna hold on, d-didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mockin' me
Actin' like I was part of your property
Rememberin' all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so far
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then, but it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this, there's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this, there's only one thing you should know
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
This is what first comes to mind when I think "game". Like the gamest personal computer video game of all time. It has it all, music, voice, guns, running and jumping, also enemies and a mission to complete; it's what games are supposed to have. If the world dies, we need to save this game so whoever comes after us can restore our whole civilization and game industry by studying Half Life 2.
Jokes aside, it's pleasant that you can interact with the world in so many ways. It's not too difficult to comprehend but makes you actually use that brain, which I personally rarely encounter in modern shooters.
Great physics, great controls, very atmospheric, excellent puzzles, cool weapons.
the graphics and the over all atmosphere is really great in half life 2.
Perfection. Half-Life 2 is good at everything (world building, atmosphere, mechanics, story etc.) Despite its age, it is one the best games ever made. If you have steam, you need to play it.
Dear Mr. Gabe Newell!
I hope this letter will find you in a good mood, despite your insanely busy schedule. I understand that you are a busy person and have a lot on your plate — a multi-billion dollar company, hundreds of employees, millions of players using Steam. But I decided to write to you because my dream is too big to keep quiet about it.
I'm an adult now, and frankly speaking, I stopped believing in miracles long ago. But there is one thing that will make me believe in magic again. It's Half-Life 3. Yes, I know it sounds like a joke, but I'm serious. I'm ready to do anything to make this game a reality. I'm even willing to carry that damned gnome from the second episode through all the levels every year if it helps (you actually made me do it twice, by the way). Imagine that? I will carry him like a cross. Again and again, dragging him through the Victory Mine and riding in a car (I won't even complain that he falls out AT EVERY TURN) just so you help me with this dream.
I understand that it is not easy to develop a new game in the Half-Life universe. It's a whole universe that fans have been waiting for so many years. But if anyone can do it, it's you, Mr. Newell.
If it's hard to develop a new Half-Life, then maybe you should contact Aperture Science and make a portal that will lead us to an alternate reality where Half-Life 3 has already been released?
Anyway, I believe in you. And if you can make this miracle happen, I'm sure millions of HL universe fans will be absolutely happy. And if I need to carry the gnome, I'm ready. Every year. No question.
With best regards,
Sergio
P.S. If developing Half-Life 3 turns out to be too difficult, I wouldn't mind Portal 3 either. But it's up to you.

Это Half-Life 3.
Half-Life 2 – Crowbars, Crabs, and Physics 101
Ah, Half-Life 2, the game that raised the bar for FPS games—and then promptly whacked everyone over the head with it. You play as Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist whose greatest accomplishment is using a crowbar to save humanity. Einstein would be so proud.

Pros:
- Revolutionary physics engine: Who needs Nobel Prizes when you can stack boxes, launch saw blades, and use gravity to turn a radiator into a deadly weapon?
- Immersive storytelling: The game doesn’t tell you what’s happening—it expects you to piece it together while dodging bullets and headcrabs. No pressure.
- Alyx Vance: The best companion you could ask for—smart, funny, and way too good for Gordon, honestly.
- City 17: A dystopian nightmare brought to you by the Combine. Think Orwell’s 1984, but with more robots and fewer happy endings.
- The G-Man: Ever wanted your life directed by a cryptic, interdimensional HR manager? Now’s your chance.
Cons:
- Gordon Freeman's personality: A man of action and very few words. By “few,” I mean zero. Silent protagonists are cool... in 2004.
- Headcrabs: Jump scares with legs. If you enjoy small, screeching nightmares clinging to your face, these guys are for you.
- Cliffhanger ending: It’s been two decades, Valve. We’re still waiting. Half-Life 3 confirmed? No? Okay.
[*] Gravity Gun addiction: Once you’ve launched a toilet at a soldier, regular guns just don’t feel the same anymore.

Final Thoughts:
Half-Life 2 is a masterpiece that redefined gaming, giving us unforgettable moments, groundbreaking mechanics, and a lifetime supply of headcrab trauma. It’s been over 20 years, and yet, somehow, it still feels fresh—like Gordon’s suit, which has apparently never needed a wash.
Rating: 10/10 – A timeless classic. Just don’t get too attached to the idea of closure. Thanks, Valve.
This is what first comes to mind when I think "game". Like the gamest personal computer video game of all time. this is a classic the storeys amazing, the game play is great, and in has set the bar for how games are stuctured to this day i belive everyone should try this classic masterpiece!!
This is one of the best games in history. The story, physics, and graphics are still amazing even for today. Although valve has not given much attention to it lately (besides the anniversary update) the community is absolutely wonderful. (also the porn's pretty good)
great story great gameplay great level design great music
gud game :)
very overrated and not as good as the portal games but an overall good game best part is running over combine with the boat
This game is one of the GOAT, honestly, it's been around for some time and it kinda holds a dear place in my heart, as I remember Steam Client in its infancy and have watched it grow over years and it's become something remarkable and this game is one of the many pillars which helped Steam and Valve Corp climb to the top. I would recommend this to anyone who is into FPS and games that require strategy and thinking the many levels through to get to the next stage. It really helps your brain wake up and look at games in a bit of a different way and I appreciate the time put into the mechanics (for the time this was released, they were new and nearly revolutionary for PC play. It had me on my toes and on the edge of my seat with my first playthrough. I will most-likely play it again someday soon. Hope we get a HL3 someday LOL
Half-Life 2 is not just a sequel; it’s a revolution!
Released in 2004, this game took everything that made the original a masterpiece and amplified it to groundbreaking heights, redefining the possibilities of interactive storytelling and game design.
Even today, it stands as a shining example of what video games can achieve as a medium.
The game thrusts players back into the boots of Gordon Freeman, the silent and enigmatic physicist, now awakening in a dystopian world ruled by the oppressive Combine.
From the haunting introduction in City 17 to the climactic showdown at the Citadel, Half-Life 2’s narrative is a masterclass in pacing and atmosphere.
The world feels alive, yet suffocating, with every encounter painting a vivid picture of a society struggling under alien domination.
Half-Life 2’s crowning achievement is the Source engine, which powered the game’s stunning visuals and realistic physics.
The game’s physics-based puzzles and combat mechanics were revolutionary for their time, making every interaction feel tangible and dynamic.
The introduction of the Gravity Gun was a stroke of genius, transforming mundane objects into deadly weapons and creating a playground of destruction and creativity.
The game’s level design is impeccable!
Whether you’re navigating the eerie canals of Ravenholm, surviving a harrowing drive along Highway 17, or leading the resistance in epic street battles, each segment feels distinct and memorable.
The balance between combat, exploration, and storytelling keeps players engaged from start to finish!
The supporting cast, including the ever-resourceful Alyx Vance, adds emotional depth and humanity to the experience. Alyx, in particular, is a standout character, her rapport with Gordon bringing warmth and levity to an otherwise bleak setting.
The enigmatic G-Man also makes a return, further deepening the series’ aura of mystery.
Visually and aurally, Half-Life 2 was a marvel of its time.
The detailed environments, lifelike character animations, and atmospheric lighting remain impressive, while the dynamic sound design and sparse, haunting soundtrack enhance immersion.
Half-Life 2 is a landmark achievement that set the bar for storytelling, gameplay, and technology in video games.
It’s a journey that captivates from the first moment to the last and remains as influential and enjoyable today as it was at release.
Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a newcomer, Half-Life 2 is an unmissable experience that exemplifies the very best of gaming.
A classic game that anyone who's ever played PC games should try at least once. The workshop support means that you can now combine some of the most ridiculous mods out there together. You can now make the Combine McDonalds workers that drive Russian BMPs and turn Alyx into a technicolor anime girl with a single click.
A timeless classic that forever changed gaming and, my favorite fact about it, introduced the gaming standard for missing textures, the purple-and-black checkerboard textures! It is rather sad that Valve had held off making the third entry because they always want to break the standards and innovate, though, but if it is in the works, I am thrilled to see what Valve cooks up next!
This is the first shooter game i played on pc, and man i had so much fun playing it. This game is truly a masterpiece.
This game is a masterpiece. I've never played a more perfect game than Half Life. One of my favorite fps games out of all I've played. Would recommend this if your interested in games in general. 10/10 game!
This game has me sleeping nearly, Ravenholm is such a ZZZ chapter, the upside was the horror but otherwise....
This "drive here, get kills, drive there, get kills, dialogue" gameplay loop is slumber inducing...
The amount of time I put into all of this I would've been so much further into HL1 mannnn.
It feels like there's a lot of down time just due to the driving and then the combat isn't even as fun as HL1 (so it's like there's no true up time), weapons somehow seem worse (since they're not in Counter Strike Source!...)
I also prefer HL1 graphics.
Good adding the gravity gun though, it's a way of breaking the gameplay loop a bit.
Will re-edit this when I beat it.
I forgot to review this. This is a 10/10 game fuck you who disagrees also i forgot they added steam workshop support. I added buzzlight year, spongebob, engineer tf2, V1, and the medic from tf2 into all room together. Also gman told me to go fuck myself. So 11/10.
First in-depth, story-like, longer, "real" 3D type FPS game. Sure there were others, but Halflife standardized a lot of things that today is taken for granted in fps games.
Also, glorifies crowbars (its a good game - buy it at discount, thank me later.
Thats a most beautiful game to I seem and also I always like the kill polices with car and boat
"You don't need a voice to make a choice" - a harsh irony that pretty much describes the whole Half-Life franchise. A legacy that will live on for generations to come. A game that revolutionized gaming as we know it. Half-Life is not only Gordon Freeman, Half-Life is each and every one of us. Thank you Valve for the amazing journey that lasted for two decades and does not plan on stopping.
Half Life 2 is one of the best games out there. I got it with The Orange Box, and this was a fun jam packed adventure of wonderful stories, great art, and silky smooth gameplay ahead of its time! Just one of Valve's many masterpieces!
Simply great. Not a lot I can say that hasn't already been said. 10/10, a great experience. My biggest problem was literally just one achievement. Now that the chapters were integrated into this, I am not changing my rating, as they are both the same rating as the original, but I will comment on one achievement that grinds my gears unique. The grubs. That's all I'll say.
A lot of classic games are classic games for a reason, but they become "obsolete" as newer games take those older once-groundbreaking ideas and integrate or improve on them. This isn't the case for half life 2 because no one has been able to improve or even replicate it. Half Life 2 was incredible when it came out and it is incredible now. To this day there is not really anything like it out there.
9.5/10 buy even at full price.
