Good, not great. The vibes are there. The characters were more enjoyable than I expected at first. The writing is mostly pretty good. The ending was a disappointment. I like when a game gives me interesting decisions, and being able to save everyone just felt kind of cheap
I like Oxenfree for a variety of reasons but perhaps the most telling one is - odd as it may sound - the short length of it.
In this stylised adventure you play as Alex, a high schooler that joins a few of her friends to throw a beach party at a off-season tourist-trap island off the coast of Oregon. Through conversation choices you learn more about your friends and the island. After a slow start, one of your friends urges you to go to a cave and try out the portable radio Alex caries. This kick-starts a series of events and greatly changes the tone and pace of the game.
The next 2-3 hours offers a spectacle with magnificent use of visuals, timing, music (oh, the music...), and creeping dread. It's easy to be sad when it ends so soon, but it's exactly because of this limited length that it could tell its story to its full potential, never skipping a beat, not a single part feeling as padding or out of place. The small cast is memorable, and based on your choices they will leave the island differently, offering surprisingly high replay-value.
I can recommend this game to any that likes adventure games, especially with an unique horror twist. Ideally it is played with good headphones.
Is. Leave. Possible?
It has bugs when climbing that make it impossible to finish.
Extremely boring chatter with slow animation. This Ren guy is annoying from the very first of his sentences. I looked for a way to drown him, but game won't allow. Later on you can choose to listen to this gibberish for next hours. I chose uninstall. Reading the cheapest book I could find in my library will be better experience.
What a fantastic game. The story is a little.. unpolished at times; but the overall story-line and game-play is well done. The art style is another massive positive. Super unique and worth your time.
While the game is kinda slow (like what others are saying), the atmosphere is not too bad.
The walking/running mechanism could use a bit of speed up though.
In contrast, the speaking bubble/decision thingy is a bit too fast. Sometime it just gone when I finish reading all of it.
the art style, music, voice acting, story of this game are some of the highest quality. i have replayed through this game multiple times on different platforms and have never once not enjoyed one of my playthroughs.
The game is actually pretty good, but it suffers from really traversal speeds, which make re-treading old ground very tiresome after you've exhausted character dialogue.
The only thing that's keeping the game as a positive review for me is the responsiveness of the dialogue, which I felt was pretty good for this size of game.
Yup, it was good for a playthrough.
unfortunately i found this game a chore to get through. the movement is slow and buggy at times (especially when you're climbing). Voice audio tends to overlap and the incredibly short timer on unimportant and uninteresting dialogue makes conversations annoying when I should be getting invested in these characters. The whole experience is fairly dull and i have absolutely no desire to go back to it to do different routes or find secrets i missed.
not a bad game, but felt like a waste of time.
oh and FUCK REN
I really wanted to like this game, and I think it has a lot going for it. Really awesome atmosphere, plot concept, and spookiness, with a supernatural mystery to solve - all things I love in a piece of media! Unfortunately I just couldn't get myself to stick with Oxenfree, and I think that comes down to two things:
1) Walking is SO slow. Yes, I know walking simulators are just *like that* but this was a little ridiculous. If you get lost, which I did often, you have to spend ages slowly walking through areas you've already been to.
2) Dialogue choices made me anxious because they disappeared before the previous dialogue was finished. I always felt like I was racing against the clock to pick an option and interrupt the ongoing conversation, or else risk missing a crucial piece of character lore. God knows there wasn't a shortage of time for characters to yap, given how much I was walking.
If you're a bit more patient or a bit less worried by missing choices, I think there's a great story here. Just wasn't for me, which is a bummer.
actually fluid dialogue in a narrative adventure game. i know, unheard of, but does it well with an absolute amazing story and 'ending'. play it
Geeked Up Reviews: 4/5

I dunno man
I think this game could have been better. I feel there is something missing. From the gameplay this is nothing more than a walking simulator and the walking quite slowly, There are no mini games or puzzles which makes this game even more boring. I don't like there's a limit on the conversation's decision and most of the dialogue is not very important. About story, well, the story is flat. I really hoped for something more. More plot twists, more intense or just more horror. The music also fails to build the atmosphere that should be able to make the scene truly impressive.
One thing that I think is very good in this game is only the voice actors. I like chat intonation that is neither too fast nor too slow. The way they interact each other feels very natural.
Right, so imagine you're at a party, yeah? And there's this group of people having what seems like the most riveting conversation of their lives. You want to join in, but you're walking across the room slower than my nan after her hip replacement. That's Oxenfree for you - brilliant chat, painful walking.
Now, before you roll your eyes and mutter "walking simulator" under your breath like some gaming snob, let me tell you something. This game's about as much a walking simulator as I am a flight instructor. It's all about the chat, innit?
The dialogue system's bloody brilliant, actually. You know when you're at the pub and everyone's talking over each other, and you've got that split-second decision to either interrupt like a proper bellend or wait politely and miss your chance? That's exactly what they've captured here. Three dialogue options floating above your head like thought bubbles in a comic strip, plus the option to shut up entirely - which, let's be honest, more people should consider in real life.
The writing's proper authentic too. None of that "How do you do, fellow kids?" nonsense you get in most games. These teens talk like actual teenagers - stumbling over words, talking absolute rubbish half the time, leaving sentences hanging like my mate Johan's DIY shelving project. It's refreshing, like finding a cold beer in the back of your fridge when you thought you'd run out.
The atmosphere's spot on as well. They're calling it horror, but that's like calling a mild curry spicy. It's more like that feeling you get when you're alone in your house at night and hear a weird noise - not scary exactly, just enough to make you question your life choices.
Now, there are some problems. The walking speed's slower than the queue at the post office on pension day. And sometimes you have to backtrack across the island with nothing but your thoughts for company - which, if they're anything like mine, isn't ideal.
It's a short game too, and while your choices do matter somewhat, don't expect dramatically different endings like you're directing your own Hollywood blockbuster.
But here's the thing - and I know this might sound odd coming from someone who made their career taking the piss out of everything - Oxenfree is actually pretty special. It's like that friend who doesn't say much at parties but when they do speak, everyone shuts up and listens. Sure, it might not be the longest game in your library, but neither was Pong, and that did alright for itself, didn't it?
So, should you buy it? Well, if you've got the attention span of a goldfish with ADHD and need constant explosions to stay entertained, probably not. But if you fancy something different, something that'll make you think and might actually surprise you - like finding out your cat's been secretly ordering takeaway on your credit card - then yeah, give it a go. Just don't blame me if you find yourself talking back to your screen like a proper nutter.
I Enjoyed the Game, The Story, The Characters and it's Horror.
Mixed bag really, I like the mouse wheel controls with the radio very smart to utilize that and it works perfectly, story is okay, different endings and all, visuals are good, a bit schizo at times which I like and the sound goes well with whats happening on the screen, with the time loop things I was expecting a bit more and I get why they wouldn't let you change thingys aroudn because you can play the game multiple times to get different endings but I would've liked a way to see some of them as like opportunity lost sort of thing, overall 6.5/10
It's hard to call the game great fully. Suppose you try to decompose it into parts. In that case, it turns out that we have a pleasant visual style, a non-trivial story at its core, and plausible dialogue that does not reduce characters to functions (say hello to "Life is strange" plastic characters). Still, all this together does not reach the extreme of catharsis. The problems of the main characters are simple and lie in the field of accepting reality, there is not much to think about. Maybe I'm just too old and this should be played at 16 or 20 when these kids' problems feel close to me. It's a good game anyway, it's just that I've probably outgrown the conflict it's about.
Oxenfree is a highly enjoyable game if you enjoy teen drama with a supernatural twist. This is essentially a visual novel, so your participation in the game is limited. You walk around an island and make dialogue choices -- but those choices can have a big impact on the story, so this game can be replayed multiple times. The voice acting is first-rate, and this has some characters that really seem like flesh-and-blood humans. The major downside is the time it takes to walk around the island to reach the story destinations (things can get tedious, especially if you're not sure where to go next). I enjoyed this greatly, but you need to be patient enough to allow the story to develop. Rating: 7/10.
i love this silly little niche choice game! been obsessed since 6th grade (im in college now).
best game ive played 10/10
I want to like this game, but it has a very annoying issue. Whenever a dialog choice pops up, my options are: 1) wait for previous conversation to play out, hence miss the dialog choice, or 2) choose the dialog, hence interrupt and miss the previous conversation. I'm not sure why the developer chooses to annoy the players this way, especially considering choosing dialog is the main mechanism of the game.
Good game. Extremely narrative.
The game is basically a story-driven walking simulator, and just like most walking simulators, the gameplay is quite dull and tedious. Frequent and long loading screens. There are no puzzles, mini-games, and challenges just tuning in a radio. Even worse there are no shortcuts for fast travel on the map, so you have to slowly walk everywhere and the story is not that great either.
But the main reason I can't recommend the game is the clunky controls and awkward pathfinding. At one point, I was unable to finish the game because my character became stuck in a loop, repeatedly climbing up and down a cliff. Reloading the game didn’t resolve the issue. I only managed to fix it after reading a comment on the forums, which suggested using the arrow keys when the character touches the ground. This kind of workaround should never be necessary in a finished game.
Not a long game, but very good and fun. Worth the price.

Great game the endings can really get crazy, game play can get a bit repetivie but its not a long game and is much better in the second game!
I think I'd recommend this to someone who loves character development and storytelling, but maybe not to people like me who like to get on with gaming. This game was more of a choose your own adventure story, and had good music and (mostly) likeable characters. Would I play it again, if I could refund my 4hrs spent? Don't think so. Not sure it was for me, but I'm sure it would be a blast for others.
start of the game i was like "damn these guys are annoying im about to turn this shit off"
end of the game im crying uncontrollably
thank you oxenfree
10/10
fantastic spooky game, if you like freaky ghosts, the Pacific Northwest, and time loops you'll like this game
It's an interesting, creepy game. It gets a little annoying when you can't understand everything that's being said during creepy parts so maybe play with the text on if every word matters. You choose the dialogue, or not, walk around, use a radio to tune into songs and more creepiness, worth a play through or 2 or 3.
I've done a full playthrough and this game has held my attention for hours at a time, which is rare (I think I've said this in some other reviews, too). I'm just about to start a new playthrough (iykyk) and am looking forward to once again ending with more questions than answers.
Beautiful game. I grew attached to the characters (especially Jonas my boy) and enjoyed the story. The platforming is clunky at points
AUGH MY HEART. Absolutely adore this game. Holy cow,,,
I liked the game enough I bought it twice and played it twice
One of those games where you can only really fully experience it for the first time, or when its been so long since you lasted played it, you've forgotten 99% of it
wont be for everyone but i gave it a chance and i really became captivated with the characters and story
Not bad at all. A nice experience start to finish with a really nice flow to the dialogue while presenting an interesting story.
Decent story with great voice acting, though sometimes I wish the characters would STOP TALKING (especially when I'm trying to use the radio and they just keep prattling on).
Graphics are serviceable but inconsequential in a game like this IMO. Music is nice but sometimes overbearing to the point where it was muddying the dialogue. There's also no sound adjustments.
My only real gripe was the character walk / run speed and the platforming that added nothing to the game and made no sense (why am I rock climbing while following path around the island?). These only makes sense from a game-time padding perspective.
I finished the game at just under 5 hours. There are some different endings / choices so there's some replay value if you're up for it.
Worth a play either way but on sale it's a steal.
pros
✅ an interesting paranormal and sci-fi story which kind of reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode
✅ voice acting pretty decent
✅ there is a map that shows you where you're supposed to go
✅ six different characters with different personalities
✅ multiple dialogue choices affect and change the story's progress and conclusion
✅ there are steam achievements and cards
✅ decent lenght
cons
❌This game is basically a story-driven walking simulator, and just like most walking simulators, the gameplay is quite dull and tedious.
❌all characters annoying and stereotyped teenagers, so as an adult, I couldn't care less and relate to their problems, worries, or dramas.
❌These teenagers talk too much. I mean, they really talk too much, mostly about nonsensical stuff, and after a while, it becomes ear-grating and irritating. you can’t also skip dialogue
❌frequent and long loading screens
❌as a walking sim game, there are no puzzles, mini-games, and challenges
❌the game is very indie and designed very primitively. music can be so loud, but there is no volume bar to adjust in the menu. there are no graphical settings in the menu either
❌there is no manual save. only auto save
❌The story is also quite convoluted and confusing. In the end, there was not much explanation given about many things in the story
❌there are no shortcuts for fast travel on the map, so you have to slowly walk everywhere
❌clunky controls and awkward pathfinding
Overall, I found this game interesting and artistic but quite boring. there are obviously novel ideas here and there in the story, but as a walking sim, the gameplay is kind of bland.
LOVEEEE THIS GAME the story just SUCKS YOU IN I could NOT PUT IT DOWN
Overall it's a great game and I'd say a unique one.
Hands down the worst game I have ever played. Absolutely cringe Reddit-tier “college-age student” writing (college students don’t talk like that) and some stupid story superimposed over some big mystery. If you want shitty dialogue, go to the ski lift in Lies of P and listen to that on loop.
I absolutely love this game, One of the best visual novels I've played in a while. The story is so compelling and solid, the characters well structures and relatable for teenagers and all in all it's a great ride. But Honestly If I have one complain it would be the inability to turn the music down. I love the soundtrack of the game but there's times when I need to unwind and music kind of puts me on edge.
I am seriously begging the devs to do sth about this for the anniversairy of the game, sorry but it is a bit annoying not to have a basic feature in a game as good as this.
Nice atmosphere and funny little story. Enjoyed my time spending here.
I had no idea what to expect. I remember hearing about this game, forgetting about it, and then trying to recall the name so I could buy and play it. It took me a while to track it down, but I'm so glad I did. What a story! Although it shows I’ve played almost 9 hours, I've actually spent around 20 hours in the game so far, and I'm still not done. Highly recommend :)
Good story and effective jumpscares/atmosphere.
Controller config a little broken when selecting items in the menu, but serviceable.
8/10. Buy on sale for a good spooky time :)
Cool game and fantastic story, but the movement made me quit after the 1st playthrough. I had fun for ~5h and reached the desired conclusion, but honestly I don't want to play it again. After reading about the 2nd playthrough and beyond, I just thought it was not worth it. I enjoyed the time I spent with this game, so it would only ruin that.
An absolute gem no doubt. By God I have found aesthetic purpose in this game and its visuals are the salt of the earth.
Oxenfree always seemed like a weird game based on what I’ve seen. I’ve played it purely for the 90% off sale on Steam and the fact that it’s a highly regarded game. So the gameplay can basically be boiled down to: go from point A to B, use your radio device to open doors or advance the plot, walk 90% of the time while you’re hearing conversations, make choices based on those conversations, see different outcomes/endings and find a few collectibles along the way. That’s really all there is to it, it’s simple but it’s well presented. The voice actors did a great job, the game has a good visual style and you can get some wildly different outcomes with the dialogues. I played it completely blind the first time and I was a total prick the second time to the point that everyone hated me. It was hilarious!
I highly disliked some of the achievements though. They’re not difficult but they’re incredibly tedious. You need to complete a run where everyone hates you and I felt like I did a good job but the game doesn’t agree, so I had to do another run to get it right. I’ve also tried to get certain characters to date twice and I failed both times because of one or two things I might have not chosen in the conversations. You guessed it, that means you can start a new run. Then there is the achievement where you have to complete the entire game without picking a single dialogue choice. OMG! What is the point of this aside from forcing you to play another run specifically for this and nothing else?! I don’t mind completing the game twice or so, but maybe be less strict about the requirements so you don’t ruin the fun of choices and consequences? Even though it was over 12 hours total, it’s a horrible feeling when you feel your time is being wasted.
With all that said, it’s still a good game to lovers of mysterious stories and different outcomes. When it comes to completionist players, you might want to keep a guide nearby at all times. It’s a shame since it’s all about making your own choices, especially the first time. The normal price of €10 isn’t outrageous but I’m not sure I consider it worth it. €5 or less is better safe than sorry.
This game, gosh where do I even begin? I originally played it on Xbox one many years back. I think it was free with gold or something and It was and still is one of my favourite decision based games I've ever played and I've played em all. Detroit become human, the wolf among us, the walking dead, the life is strange games, (specifically 1 and true colours those are my favourites). You get the picture I LOVE DECISION GAMES! They provide a more simple form of entertainment that doesn't involve like 40-80 damn achievements (usually). Those being more casual to collect is also a factor but that's not important.
The point is when your damn story has me playing again and again along with gathering all the collectables just to get the best possible outcome for the characters? You know I like your game and I was happy to do it too. My sweet boy Jonas, I would sacrifice all for him. I loved all the characters but Jonas omg just making a character so naturally likeable, so lovable it cant be easy but yet here he is in all his grace. I'm trying to keep this spoiler free as best I can but I just cant stress how much my little heart ached trying to get the best outcome just for him.
He's so believable in every way and you just cant help but be attracted to his warm demeanour and brotherly nature, Gavin Hammon did an excellent job voicing him and we cant forget about Alex played by Erin yvette. Both her and Jonas have such spectacular chemistry (unless your like deliberately being a dick or dismissive of him ofc then in which case shame on you).
I know some people are picky when it comes to how a game is presented. Like "Oh its not totally 3D?" Like you are seriously selling the game short if that's whats turning you away. This is a game created by people with passion with so much thought and love put into their characters, world and ideas. Normally I would say wait for a sale for most story games blah blah blah and although I did get it on sale I'd buy it again at normal price cuz its worth so much more than that to me and hell id still pay twice that too. If your considering playing it please do I personally think its life changing stuff and I don't say that lightly.
Now I'm gonna go cry in a corner because I'll never have a cool teenage step brother to hang out with.
11/10 Would Tune in again📻
