Do you like shooting spaceships and aerial dogfight? you'l like this game if you do. Its lighter on the rpg elements and more focused on the combat.
if you were looking for a satisfying capitol ship sim, i dont think this is it. the systems in game just arent satisfying to use. unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Game is too in love with its own idea of twists in the story and it gets in the way of gameplay
Fun little game. Battles get a bit samey as they're not very complicated, but the story is nice and is a great little diversion.
It is a great game in it's self, and i am happy that i had it
This game helped during my deperessive stage
Between the Stars is a beneath the radar jewel of a game. It is very similar to a concept I've had for years but was unable to bring to reality. Thanks to the developer, I no longer have to try. My favorite parts of the game include the combat, ship upgrades, and developing the crew's attributes and skills. I don't have a lot of time invested thus far, but I certainly plan on playing this extensively in the near future. Buy it, play it, and enjoy!!!
This game provided many hours of entertainment and I enjoyed it very much.
The best part of this game for me was piloting a corvette-sized ship, rather than the done-to-death space fighters that every other space game seems to fixate on. The ship feels bigger and heavier, though not by a huge amount. The only thing missing on this front is having the crew take over some of the actions (firing weapons at designated targets, piloting the ship, etc.) to make you feel more like a captain vs. a do-everything-yourself fighter pilot.
The RPG mechanics can be somewhat frustrating, as the skill-leveling and dice rolls can limit your options (and sometimes in ways you didn't expect). The system isn't unreasonable but does go against a more "sandbox" style of play that some players are looking for. Sometimes the impact of choices isn't clear and you can wind up with consequences that weren't what you expected.
Overall I thought it was enjoyable enough, though with the caveat that I didn't finish the campaign (too many competing games and not enough time). I'd recommend watching a first impression video to see if it seems interesting to you, or else pick it up during a sale.
Well, it would be a neutral, but I give it a recommend as I got it cheap.
Pro:
+ It has a nice feeling for flying around with beautiful space background. Funny that you can fly through a sun.
+ Nice solution for planet landing
+ Good atmosphere.
+ Nice ship design
+ Simple controls and UI, maybe too simple
+ Dice and storytelling combination. Until now the story is not bad. Funny unique quests
Cont:
- Most of the weapons and utility equipment are just bad/useless/not worth using.
- Solar systems are empty, same ships graveyard and asteroid field everywhere, and not worth exploring them
- Feels unfinished / half completed and have some bugs.
- Bad station docking, it should be like planets, so to not waste time with docking. For the 100th time it is boring and time wasting.
- Missing distance from enemy ships. So you can only guess if the are in your range or not.
- Many missing opportunity, this game could and should be great. I hope the devs not given up on it, and fix / correct / expand what they can
- Not fun
- UI bad
- Story meeeeh
Overall:
Waste of time. Can not recommend to buy.
All the stations look the same. All the systems look the same. Swap blue bullets for red bullets, maybe fire a rocket shaped bullet or a beam of this color or that. Ship combat is so zoomed out that its just your brick-shaped craft vs pixels. Then you come up along for a broadside and enemy goes boom, no real strategy to it that I can see.
I did not find the story inspiring. I tried to read every word for the first few hours and then started skimming. Its attempts to hook me fell flat. The voice acting ranges from poor to average.
I got this on a pretty big discount and still feel like I didn't get my money's worth. The nicest thing I have to say about it, at least someone is trying to capture good old space exploration games.
This game is essentially a lightweight choose-your-own-adventure book mixed in with some real-time space combat and a dollop of tabletop-style dice rolls. It's an odd ensemble, but it works pretty well. Although you are constantly marching inexorably towards the story's end, the route that you take to get there can vary somewhat and the fate of several characters depends on your choices and actions. Dialogue choices, success (or failure) in ability checks, and choices made will also impact the development of your character in small but meaningful ways.
The space combat is fairly simplistic and repetitive, but it's satisfying enough that I didn't really mind it. Equipment choices are varied, but imbalanced so there aren't many real options to your loadout. Ultimately, this game is about enjoying the story and seeing how your decisions impact what happens. It's a niche game that shifts the focus to storytelling and immersion in the world it takes place in.
The music is beautiful, and really draws you into the events and setting as you read through what is essentially a short novel. The voice acting is hit or miss, some of the characters are really cheesy or exaggerated and I felt that improving the quality of this would have improved the game significantly. Some errors in the text remain, so the overall polish of the game seems a bit wanting.
It's not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and did multiple playthroughs (and a lot of save scumming) to see how different story branches played out. If you're a fan of sci-fi novels (especially military sci-fi) and used to love those choose-your-own-adventure books as a kid, then you should give Between the Stars a try.
bug on the consequences quest that makes the game break and no more progression. a quick google shows this has been known for years with no resolution.
Camera is broken, or somehow the devs managed to bring the worst angles to the game. The controls are completely non-standard, and make you wonder if the creators ever played another space game. The music is overwhelmingly out of order here! It doesn't fit the events, and tries to make it sound epic, but in reality is very annoying - switch it off. There are still trivial bugs all over the place, and I can't forget the horrific: only first typed letter in the edit boxes is capital, if you remove it and there are any other characters already typed, it won't let you type a capital character! again how would in their right mind block you from typing anything you want?
This game is quite enjoyable, in a "developed by one person, with care" kind of way.
There are rewarding feedback loops to engage in, developing your character, your crew, and of course your ship, in order to make yourself more of a force to be reckoned with.
I recommend this game.
I didn't read other reviews to see what people are complaining most, but I did enjoy this game and consider the money well spent.
It's campaign is enourmous, convoluted story at times, but nobody is here for a master piece in story telling and it servers it's purpose. Otherwise combat is arcadish fun, good ship customization, good written text quests with branching storylines, with dice mechanics based on your stats and light rpg elements to it.
I think there are very good ideas here and they mostly work well together. If you like the genre, as long as you go into it perfectly aware that this is a game made on a limited budget, you should have a good time with it. I had.
I am sad for all the people who put positive reviews for this game. There are so many better games in the same genre, like X4, Elite Dangerous, even Freelancer. As one reviewer put it, this game would have been great twenty years ago. But as it is, it is at best a mediocre rehash of much better games.
Pros:
Nice narrative choices
Decent graphics
Simple UI, simple combat
Voice narration
Cons:
Boring story
Poor voice acting
Limited customization
All ships are pretty much equal
This game has a lot of menus, but still lacks depth. From the lackluster, painfully boring story, to the incredibly simplistic combat (just keep clicking on the enemy ship until it explodes), this game doesn't improve in any way over games in the same genre. The only really good thing about this game is the narrative, dice roll choices that pop up every once in a while, but even that is a half-hearted copy from better games. If you're going to spend money on a space flight sim, spend it elsewhere.
What an amazing game, I have been looking for a capital ship experience like that for a long time. Great story and engeging characters so far.
A little buggy, but really pleasant story base cosmic experience. Recommended if you like such things
I tried to like it and finish it, but it was so mundane, boring, repetitive etc. A game like this would have felt awesome 25 years ago.
Good
Great story with amazing potential. Although there is much can be polished. The ship and art design is the top level. I really hope Home world III can have this kind of script.
The flying and guns aiming control is horrible in this game.
The game itself and story was pretty nice, just not the way how the ship is flown and shoots.
This is a good game. I would love to see a Between the Star 2 with more SANDBOX options
Way better than I expected from a game with linear story. Good graphics, very good designed battleships with fine details, enough diversity of weapons and equipment. The crew and their skills are impressive addition. Personally, I found commanding a single battleship with upgradable options a way better that using single x-wing or a whole fleet. Hiring mercenaries is useful addition, I`d wish only to give them crew members also.
As I often see it in-games I found the enemy`s flagship way better modelled than the ships I can use. I`d pay to have it for my own instead the default one. Also, the game seems a bit short.
In conclusion I`d give it 9 out of 10. It is worth more than I payd for it. I hope to see an expansion (or several). Just more of the same will be fine by me, if extended the gameplay.
I played the game for a total of 52 hours. Several days ago I saved & exited the game. When I tried to play again, the game just sits on the "LOADING..." screen. I allowed to stay on that screen for 12+ hours & nothing happened. I tried verifying the integrity of the game files & they were good. I uninstalled & reinstalled the game & nothing changed. I even went so far as to uninstall Steam from my computer & reinstall it. Again, it changed nothing. It appears the game has just randomly broken. I emailed the developer & here I am FOUR DAYS later with no response. Steam will not issue a refund because I played for more than two hours! This is frustrating & just sad, honestly. The game was fun & had a lot of potential. I would not recommend purchasing it due to the lack of support from the dev & Steam. I have SEVENTY games in my Library that I've purchased through Steam. Due to their lack of support, I WILL NEVER make another purchase through them. From now on, g 2 a will have my business!
It's rare that I encounter a game that allows me to become emotionally attached to the characters and the overall story. Although the discourse and repetitive quips back and forth between the characters on the fly can be really "anime-ish", the written story and the overall premise was incredible. I laughed, I shed a tear, and most of all I thoroughly enjoyed my play through of Between The Stars. Well done! If you are considering trying this game out, I highly recommend it, especially if you have the patience to take your time and give the game the attention it deserves.
Tldr; Yes, the answer is YES!
Flaws:
Missiles are OP, camera takes some getting used to and there's a plethora of grammatical errors when it comes to He/She references to gender due to the written system being "static" in programming terms, instead of "dynamic" where it should change/update dependent if the character you're playing, interacting with or speaking in the text is male or female.
Strengths:
Everything else - it's BG3 in space with beefy spaceship combat, with scenarios that will make you go WHYY!!? Why did you make me go through this!!! Making you question should you play more: are you going to be hurt or be lucky enough to enjoy a thoroughly unique adventure - psychologically I mean.
Great adventure, very good game.

There's plenty of space out in space.
Worth it for the guided missile swarms.
