Fantastic artistic super speedy precision platformer with a dash, walljumps, and, for a portion, double jumps. Recommended for anyone who can handle speedy hard games.
Absolutely amazing hidden gem of a game. My friend and I raced through it together and we loved it! I don't know how else to describe it beyond a "Psychological Horror Precision Platformer". Loved racing to merely beat the light and dark worlds, and then seeing who can do the S ranks first. (we were super close!)
Overall Score: 6/10
Decent platformer, sometimes has a bit too much going on but I would recommend it.
Sour Bill From Wrecking Ralph Confirmed??????
too much visual clutter, bad momentum based movement, terrible inexplicable hitboxes of enemies and jump trajectories sometimes feel janky.
Also i have to repeat again the visual clutter in this game puts overwatch to shame
controls are extremely tight, maybe too tight even. overall it's pretty fun
fantastic and amazing little game, really love playing it, the visuals and layout of levels is so gorgeous, it's really rewarding to speedrun, can't reccommend this eonugh if you like platformers. The only downsides to the game are that the wall jump timing for inputs is a bit weird/clunky and takes some getting used to, and that I wish there was 50 more levels because I just want it to keep going
So the game is pretty simple:
You have a dude (a head).
He runs fast.
He can wall jump.
And he has a dash.
You crack at it at an intense pace that makes Super Meat Boy and Sonic look pretty slow by comparison in mini, bite-sized levels (again, like Super Meat Boy)
It's pretty jerky. I wouldn't recommend going at this with a keyboard (I'm stuck with it for now).
If you're able to follow along games at a very intense pace and like platformers, then this game is for you.
Otherwise, I'd probably skip it.
For those that like SMB, however, I would recommend it.
Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase.
Quick score: 4/5
Notes: Solid speedrun focused platformer, with 1 major caveat. There are no controller options in game, and by default you can only use d-pad, and in order to restart you need to pause the game first, there is no quick restart.
However, I recently learned that if you use steam big picture mode controller options you can fix both of these issues, and i would highly recommend that you do. You can setup analog sticks for movement and you can set one of your triggers to pause and restart with 1 button press.
The only other minor issue with the game is that while the aesthetic is pretty cool, it can be a bit overwhelming at times and get a bit difficult to see especially when speedrunning.
I 100% the game in about 2 hours, but your experience with platforming will greatly effect this time. And if you don't really care about getting the S rank times you will probably finish the game in well under an hour.
I bought Heads Run as it was compared favorably to Super Meat Boy by various reviewers here on Steam. I played it for about 3/4 of an hour and made it to level 34, but became too annoyed by the poor game mechanics. When reading some early Steam reviews I get the impression that the little green blob was too sticky when the game was first released, which apparently got fixed, but unfortunately now the green blob is not sticky enough anymore causing wall jumps to fail often. Luckily I was able to got a refund.
My games Heads Run
Let's get Turbo and Extra
Ohh wow, just less than hour in and I'm at level 19 full of escalating excitement and nostalgia of old time when I was playing Super Meat Boy. Good job!
Just one thing it could have been perfect is when a character holds on to the wall. This particular moment drags the flow moment of the game down. Guess if it requires players to hit a certain button to activate holding on a wall so I can slide down without a pause thus keep the flow of my run.
Overall, it's great experience.
I like this game :-)
To the dev --- sticking to a wall destroys fluidity of the game. Moreover, ``in the air'' physics is a bit awkward (I may help you with the physics if you like).
Anyway, this is a great game with a lot of potential. Consider polishing the game, and making it more commercial --- if you start a campaign on kickstarter, I will be your backer :-)
Cool style. meaty action-platform minimalism.
Heads run was a fantastic surprise. I bought the game because I like platformers and it was dirt cheap so I figured I would give it a shot and I am glad I did. I was initially off put by the game boy ish color palette, but as you play the game it really grows on you, and while you may die a few wtf deaths in the beginning, you quickly learn what you should be looking for as you race through these levels.
Comparisons to super meat boy are inevitable in a game like this as it has much in common with that game. It is fast paced, has tight controls, instant respwans on death, and fairly short levels where you will likely die several times as you learn the best way to make it past the various obstacles. However there are a few twists that separate this game from meat boy.
First, you have a dash. Your character moves at super fast speeds and when you first start to play it will take a minute to get used to, but even on top of the very fast run speed, your dash is necessary to further accelerate your character for a variety of level specific reasons. As is typical in games like this, you can also dash mid air which will be necessary to navigate tricky jumps between saws and other obstacles, as well as to break through blocks placed around the stages.
Second, the wall mechanic in this game is a bit odd. You can wall jump here, and you can use your wall jump to scale single walls by continuously wall jumping up it, or bounce back and forth between walls. Most games like this have your character slide down the wall slowly when you are not jumping off of it, this game has your character stick in place. When you cling to a wall a meter appears above your characters head, if you are holding the controller towards the wall the meter remains full, once you release the directional pad, the meter drains and when it is empty you fall off the wall. What this means in execution is the walls can be an obstacle, if you are trying to quickly descend down a wall and stick to it, you cannot instantly let go, which can lead to death. The plus side is you can hang on a wall as long as you like to wait for the opportune time to progress. It is a unique mechanic, and while it takes some getting used to, adds another layer to the gameplay.
Third, and probably most important, is that the vast majority of the games 50 levels have these huge, weird looking, creatures chasing you through the levels. They are all pretty freaky looking and chase you relentessly through the levels, they add a real sense of urgency and tension as you navigate the levels and force you to keep a fast pace as you navigate these trickly levels filled with saws, lasers, guns, and all manner of other instant death kills.
The difficulty curve in this game is nice. It starts off really easy as it introduces you to the various play mechanics and there is a nice smooth curve throughout the game. Although you will die a lot, you will never feel unprepared for the challenges the game throws at you. There are a handful of randomnly placed easy levels, that you will likely complete on your first or second try, but they are pretty infrequent and don't detract from the rest of the game. If anything they give your brain and heart a minute to recover from the tension you experience on most of the levels.
This game has everything you would want in a meat boy ish platformer, It is a little on the short side(it took me about an hour 20 minutes to complete the game) but it is also only 4 dollars which is more than fair for a game this much fun. You also unlock various modes upon completion of the game where you can race against your best times, the world record best times, and a hard mode that adds even more crazy stuff to each level. Fans of hardcore platformers can't go wrong with this game.
I would honestly love this game so much if they fixed the grapple mechanic, I'm not sure if it was intentional, but it ruined the game for me. This game truly has a lot going for it, but the grapple just destroys all of that. A fast paced platformer should not have a grapple that freezes you in place for 5 seconds.
Highly Reccomended: If you like fast paced challenging games, with tight responsive controlls.v Great pallete cleanser between games. (could use a level editor)
Super Meat Boy comes mind, but this game is much faster, with an air dash mechanic. Though some of the art is muddled and hard to decypher at first, after a few tries at a level you will atart to understand what is happening, and what the various hazards are.
This game is obviously moddled after game early Game Boy games, but i doubt the Game Boy could done it justice.
Heads run has both bad and good. If you are looking for a fun game to speed run or play for 2-5 hours depending on your skill. Heads run is only 4 dollars and a great option.
The Good -
The game for the most part does a great job setting a fast pace to making you want to rush and speed thru the level. The level has slight changes as you hit or interact with walls and floors and adds to the feel of the world. It also has an interesting artstyle that combines with the rest to create an enjoyable experience.
The Bad-
All the goods have a counter that during certain levels causes a drag on the usually fast gameplay. The Wallgrab is probably my biggest problem. You stick to walls to long interrupting the flow of the level. This may have been intentional to add difficulity but more often than not it just pulled me out of the game. The artstyle well adding to the game also had it's drawback with it's limited color that usually resulted in dieing to something that could have been avoided had it been visually clear.
Conclusion -
Despite it's downsides i still found it be fun and enjoyed the tension set by enemys as i tried to weave across the screen. Definitely worth what you pay for it. If you enjoy these types of games.
Super Good! Imagine if someone turned that one level where you get chased by Dr. Fetus into a full game, and thats the game. Extremely Speedrunner Friendly, and has more than enough content to warrant a $4 price tag.
The game feels great!
I really like the astheatic of the game, looks nice, is fluid, soundtrack is simple but catchy.
The game is fast paced and everything works really nice.
Definitly recommend this one!
