I played both the game and the dlc. I must admit, sometimes I felt like peeing my pants and stopping right there, but I pushed through and boy was it worth it. The story is immaculate for a horror game. Even in 2025 the game is very much worth playing. If you think that the graphics might be a deal breaker for you, then I'd say you're wrong, they are good enough and in my opinion they might even make it scarier in a way. And if you enjoy the base game then you will like the dlc a lot, both are very much worth it even tho they are short. So the conclusion is: You should definitely buy it. + There are two naked guys that you can record.
Just saying, no you don't have heart problems, you just need to go find a locker or under a bed to hide in and take deep breaths.
This game had me scared to even open my pc for days jsut thinking i had to finish it. After that it became my favorite stress releaver and speed running game. 10/10 would recommend.
This game is downright terrifying the first time you play it and still has mostly good replayability after completing it. Definitely recommend if you are fearful of horror games and need to start somewhere.
There are a few jumpscares, sure, but the game thrives on atmosphere and SFX.
It's still scary, even after all this time. The story is also very good, and the gameplay is perfect.
Outlast is a great horror game that really knows how to freak you out. It has this creepy vibe right from the start, with visuals that really set the feeling that something’s wrong. You spend most of the time in tight, rundown hallways and rooms with worn-down walls, broken lights, and flickering bulbs, which makes everything feel super real and intense. The blood stains and other creepy details add to the horror and can tell their own little story about what went down there. The night vision on your camera is a lifesaver. It lets you see in almost total darkness, but the vision is limited and grainy, which just adds to the tension and makes everything feel even scarier. Sometimes it’s a bit confusing figuring out where to go, but the visuals really make it feel like you’re right there in all the scary stuff. It’s pretty intense and creepy, and honestly, totally worth grabbing.
Classic. I've watched a few people play it and decided to get it for myself. Great story, works great even for a low-end device. TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST I don't have many hours on it because i'm too scared to play on my lonesome, so i have to wait for friends to play near me.....
The game is a masterpiece of survival horror, even in 2025 it is still fantastic to replay. Couldn't recommend this enough.
Think of this game as mirror's edge but you can't see shit 90% of the time and there is always something chasing you. That's how I convinced myself to continue playing this game without pissing my pants.

Do I recommend it? YES.
Outlast is pure horror. One of the scariest games I’ve ever played. And one of my personal favorites, If you like adrenaline, this one’s for you.
PROS:
The atmosphere is insane. Dark, intense, and claustrophobic in the best way.
The camera mechanic with night vision is genius, it makes everything feel 10x scarier.
No weapons. You’re completely defenseless, which makes running and hiding super intense.
The sound design? 10/10. Every step, scream, and whisper keeps you on edge.
The story is disturbing but really interesting if you pay attention.
CONS:
It’s a bit short. You can finish it in one or two sittings.
Not for the faint of heart... seriously, if you don’t like being scared, stay away.
CONCLUSION:
10/10. A terrifying, unforgettable experience.
even though they include violent content an d sexual content with the dlc i actually like this and i even beat the whole game qnd even the dlc i beated
Outlast isn’t just a horror game—it’s a full-blown nightmare brought to life, and one of the most effective psychological horror experiences in modern gaming. You play as an investigative journalist lured into a derelict insane asylum by the promise of a story, only to find yourself trapped in a living hell with no weapons, no safety, and no real escape. Armed with only a night-vision camera, you’re forced to witness horrors that you'd give anything to unsee.
What makes Outlast so unforgettable isn’t just the grotesque imagery or brutal jump scares—it’s the constant, choking atmosphere of dread. The Mount Massive Asylum is more than a setting; it’s a malevolent force in its own right. Flickering lights, disembodied screams, and distant footsteps all conspire to keep you in a constant state of tension. Even when nothing is chasing you, Outlast makes you feel hunted.
The sound design is nothing short of masterful. Whether it’s the low buzz of static from your camera, the echo of a scream down a blood-smeared hallway, or the sickening thud of something just out of sight, the game uses audio to unnerve and unbalance you at every turn. You’re never really sure when you’re safe—and that’s exactly the point.
What’s more impressive is how Outlast builds its fear not just through scares, but through vulnerability. There are no weapons here, no way to fight back. Your only option is to run or hide. And when the game turns up the intensity, those moments of desperate flight—heart pounding, camera battery dying—are some of the most terrifying you’ll ever play.
Surprisingly, the game also tells a story that’s deeper than expected. What begins as a typical "escape the asylum" plot slowly mutates into something far darker and stranger. If you take the time to dig into the documents and environmental storytelling, a twisted logic starts to emerge from the chaos. By the time you reach the finale, it’s no longer just about surviving—it’s about reckoning with what you’ve become.
Outlast also avoids the pitfall of overplaying its hand. It paces its scares well, letting moments breathe just enough before tightening the noose again. And although it doesn’t lean on complex mechanics, everything in the game is well utilized—from the battery management of your camera to the hide-and-seek encounters with horrifying enemies.
This is a horror game that gets under your skin. It makes you care about the protagonist, even when you're mostly watching him get emotionally and physically wrecked. And while it’s not perfect, it is laser-focused on what it wants to do—and it executes that vision brilliantly.
Whether you're a seasoned horror fan or just looking to be scared in a deeply psychological way, Outlast is essential. It’s not just scary—it’s disturbingly effective. And once you enter Mount Massive, part of you never quite leaves.
Scary but unlike a lot of scary games has actually good lore. 8/10, I'd recommend.
I watched playthroughs of Outlast a couple of times and it still scared me. 10/10 game.
Loved the story and this is one of the first games to acc scare me :o (but god dayum the main character was whimpering mess xd)
I finally finished the game and got all the achievements. It was painfull and it wasn't worth it but I did it.
-8,69/10 hate it
-good game
-play it you like spooky games and/or are a masochist that like to suffer
outlast is an absolute horror game if you're playing alone. BUT! Let me tell you something. if you're playing it with a friend next to you, this shit is nothing more than a comedy show...
The scariest game I have ever played. It was pure horror, also that Miles panting and the night vision camera added more to the horror element. It is more like an exploration game, but like it's insane!! Words can't define how much scared I would get sometimes, great music, great atmosphere I still can't recover from the horror...
Outlast is more than just a game. It's an experience all Horror loving fans should have. I would recommend the experience of this game to all that are interested in being scared sh!tless and contemplating every next move while uncovering the truth behind Murkoff Stations.
Gorgeous. No words! The graphics, the jump scares, the plot. Everything is top-notch ^w^
I love playing horror games, but nothing scared me as much as this game. There were moments when I literally screamed in fear xD
I recommend it.
I have nothing to say but this game was scary af! even though i finished it years ago, it still scares the hell outta me every time. i never get used to it. damn! 10/10 for horror.
Story telling is a little bit weak. There are documents to read everywhere but not enough to be able to understand what is going on exactly. Graphics and sounds are goodenough. Mechanics and gameplay are quite linear, but it is not easy to find what to do in most of the situations.

was about to beat the game on insane and got gripped by chris... 9/10
A Horror Masterpiece.
I first played Outlast years ago on PlayStation when I was younger, and honestly I was too scared to finish it. The atmosphere, the tension, the helplessness... it all got to me. I eventually gave up and never looked back.
Fast forward to now, I got bored enough and decided to redownload it just to see if I could finally beat it. Not only did I finish it, but I absolutely loved every second of it. The fear is still real, the tension still palpable, but this time I pushed through and I’m so glad I did.
One of my favorite parts of the experience was the use of the camcorder's night vision. Unlike a typical flashlight, it added a whole new layer of dread. The grainy green visuals made everything feel even more unsettling, and the limited battery life forced me to use it tactically. It wasn’t just a cool feature it was essential, and it made the experience way scarier in the best way.
I’ll admit, I hated the ending at first. It felt abrupt and confusing. But after diving into the Whistle Blower DLC and reading up on the deeper lore behind everything, it all clicked. Now? I think the ending is genius, dark, bold, and perfectly in line with the world Red Barrels created.
If you're a fan of horror and haven't tried Outlast, do it. And if you bounced off it before like I did, give it another shot. It’s worth every scream.
Seems like after completing this game nothing will be able to scare you anymore. Superb.
The concept of the game in which you can only run and hide adds up to the horror element of a game. A solid experience. A 10/10 for me.
the game's atmosphere and environmental build is perfect, the game is absolutely scary, at some point i was bored of the game My but passion came back, although the ending kinda disappointed me but overall its a great game. 8.5/10
best game, recommend listening to bomba by drogos roby while getting chased in the male ward ... or ... anywhere else
the only horror game to make me feel genuine fear even when i know exactly what is going to happen. love love love love love love this game so much
It's known as one of the best horror games ever for a reason, and it goes on sale all the time. There's genuinely no reason NOT to get this game if you enjoy horror. Get the DLC too, it's incredible and finishes the story.
I want to like this game but its too much of a hiding sim. U spend so long waiting for the npc to go away just for it to only be 1 turn away then u have to sit there and wait and hope it doesn't randomly turn around. I also died multiple times in hiding spots that should keep me hidden but the ai suddenly just randomly attacks me. the chase scenes do feel pretty epic in a few scenes though. but overall this game frustrated me more than it scared me
peak gameplay, peak characters, peak story, peak scares and peak environment love this game for reals
Ran into a few issues in the DLC mostly such as somehow vaulting over a bed and getting myself stuck which resorted me to restart some checkpoints but I think that is just me being dumb lol
It's honestly a fun and thrilling game! Off to Outlast 2!!
One of the best horror experiences of all time both for the main game and the DLC. loved this game back on the ps4 and still love it now.
6/10
I think avid horror fans would give this game a higher rating than me, and I completely understand why Outlast became a cult classic in the genre.
Personally, I’m a bit more indifferent toward horror games - mostly because I’ve rarely encountered ones so well-made that they truly immerse me to the point where I actually feel fear or discomfort (cheap tricks like random loud noises don’t count; I’m talking about the atmosphere the project manages to create). Sadly, Outlast wasn’t really it for me either.
I really want to praise the incredible score and the outstanding sound design in general. There were several moments during my playthrough when I even stopped just to listen to the music. Visually, the game is also quite well done, though at times, I caught myself thinking that the rooms were too repetitive and the locations looked too similar. That’s why it felt really cool when I reached the final section of the main game - it took place in a completely new location visually, and it felt like a breath of fresh air after the already tiresome, barely varied environments.
Story-wise, the game holds almost no value for me, although the plot isn’t really the main focus here. The gameplay, on the other hand, is fun, but again, it felt like there was too little variety for the game’s runtime. Sections like "find three levers in a small area and return to unlock something while an enemy hunts you" were way overused. Every time, I wanted something new, but I got the same thing, just in different rooms. Because of the lack of variety, the gameplay almost stopped being enjoyable.
All in all, I highly recommend it to horror fans, while others might check it out just out of curiosity to see what all the hype was about back in the day.
Outlast 1 was really good, but getting all the achievements is gonna suck
Incredible game. Extremely scary and anxiety-inducing, yet an absolute blast of a thrill ride to play. I highly recommend this as it is one of the best horror games I have played.
Id rather buy WinRawr, this has been the most boring experience of my life and I wish i could go back to being the same person I was before this game, the only postive part is the naked dudes and that the game has an ending
Playing it again- just to scare myself silly. Don't forget to play the Outlast 2
Good: Spooky! Jump scares! You might have nightmares.
Bad: Doesn't make "real world" sense. If you play it- You will understand what I mean.
Ugly: Older game- Dated graphics.
Best: Play in a dark room- Headphones. You're mom should be home- Just in case.
A cousin the scary Amnesia scary games.
If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to be a victim in a psychological horror game where you have no weapons and no hope, this game will answer that question brilliantly (and disturbingly). You play as a journalist trapped in an insane asylum, where the only things that make sense are fear and desperation. And of course, your only tool is a night-vision camera, because naturally, that's the only way to see the atrocities unfolding around you. But the worst part isn't the monsters—it's the constant feeling that you're being watched and stalked. The sound design is so uncomfortable and the atmosphere so thick that it makes you feel like, even when nothing is in sight, something’s just waiting to jump out from the shadows. This game doesn’t shy away from making you feel vulnerable, and that, honestly, is what makes it so effective. It's not just a horror game; it’s a direct trip into your worst nightmares.

Outlast in 2025 – A Classic Horror Experience That Still Haunts (But Can’t Escape Time)
Introduction: A Decade of Terror
When Outlast first launched in 2013, it redefined survival horror with its relentless tension, disturbing atmosphere, and the simple yet terrifying premise of being completely defenseless. More than a decade later, does Outlast still hold up as a masterpiece of horror, or has time dulled its impact? After revisiting it in 2025, the answer is mixed—while its psychological horror and oppressive atmosphere remain effective, its gameplay and storytelling feel dated compared to modern horror giants like Amnesia: The Bunker, Visage, or The Callisto Protocol.
The Story: A Descent into Madness (Spoiler-Free Overview)
You play as investigative journalist Miles Upshur, who receives a tip about unethical experiments at Mount Massive Asylum. What starts as a routine exposé quickly spirals into a nightmare as Miles discovers the asylum is overrun by homicidal patients, all victims of the Murkoff Corporation’s sadistic experiments. The deeper Miles ventures, the more he uncovers the horrors of the Walrider project—a supernatural force born from suffering.
How the Narrative Holds Up in 2025
Strengths: The game’s found-footage approach (via the camcorder) still works brilliantly, making the horror feel raw and personal. The asylum’s lore, hidden in notes and environmental details, remains intriguing.
Weaknesses: Compared to modern horror narratives (Signalis, The Dark Pictures Anthology), Outlast’s storytelling is minimalistic—Miles is a silent protagonist, and much of the plot is delivered through scattered documents. Newer games integrate storytelling into gameplay better, making Outlast feel somewhat passive in retrospect.
Gameplay: Still Tense, But Showing Its Age
The Good – What Still Works
✅ The Fear of Being Powerless – Unlike modern action-horror hybrids (Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake), Outlast forces you to run, hide, and pray. There’s no combat, making every encounter with enemies like Chris Walker or the Twins a heart-pounding ordeal.
✅ Masterful Sound Design – The distant screams, shuffling footsteps, and sudden bursts of static from the camcorder remain some of the best in horror gaming. Few modern games match this level of auditory dread.
✅ Brutal, Unforgiving Atmosphere – The asylum’s grimy halls, flickering lights, and grotesque imagery still unsettle, even if the graphics are outdated.
The Bad – Where It Feels Dated
❌ Predictable Enemy AI – Enemies follow simple patrol routes, and hiding mechanics are basic. Compared to Amnesia: The Bunker’s dynamic AI or Alien: Isolation’s adaptive Xenomorph, Outlast’s foes feel scripted.
❌ Overuse of Jump Scares – While effective in 2013, modern horror relies more on psychological tension (Visage) and environmental storytelling (Layers of Fear 2023). Outlast sometimes feels like it’s shouting "BOO!" too often.
❌ Limited Interaction – You can’t barricade doors, set traps, or manipulate the environment like in newer horrors. The gameplay loop (run → hide → repeat) gets repetitive.
Comparison to Modern Horror (2020-2025)
When stacked against contemporary horror titles, Outlast stands as a pioneer but struggles to compete in terms of depth.
Gameplay Depth: Where Amnesia: The Bunker (2023) introduces resource management and a semi-open world with reactive AI, Outlast sticks to a linear, scripted experience. Similarly, Visage (2020) leans heavily into environmental interaction and psychological puzzles, making Outlast’s "run and hide" mechanics feel one-dimensional by comparison.
Narrative Delivery: Modern horror games like Signalis and The Dark Pictures Anthology weave their stories more naturally into gameplay, using dialogue, cutscenes, and player choices. Outlast relies heavily on reading notes and watching distorted footage, which can feel detached from the action.
Enemy Behavior: Games like Alien: Isolation (2014) and Amnesia: The Bunker have raised the bar for enemy AI, creating foes that learn from player behavior and adapt their tactics. Outlast’s enemies, while terrifying in design, follow predictable patterns that lose their edge after a few encounters.
Scare Techniques: While Outlast popularized the found-footage horror aesthetic in games, newer titles have evolved beyond cheap jump scares. Visage and Layers of Fear (2023) focus on slow-burn psychological horror, making Outlast’s approach feel somewhat dated for players desensitized to sudden loud noises.
Graphics & Performance in 2025
Visuals: The game’s lighting and art direction still hold up, but low-res textures and stiff animations show their age. A remaster with ray tracing would be a dream.
Performance: Runs flawlessly on modern PCs, even at high refresh rates. No major bugs or crashes.
Final Verdict: Is Outlast Still Worth Playing in 2025?
Score: 8/10 – "A Classic That’s Starting to Gray, But Still Nightmare Fuel"
Who Should Play It?
Horror Purists – If you love raw, unfiltered terror, Outlast remains a must-play.
Newcomers to Horror – It’s a great introduction to survival horror before diving into more complex modern titles.
Fans of Found-Footage – The camcorder gimmick still works brilliantly.
Who Might Be Disappointed?
Players Used to Modern Horror Mechanics – If you’ve experienced Amnesia: The Bunker or Alien: Isolation, Outlast might feel too simplistic.
Those Who Hate Jump Scares – The game relies on them heavily, which can feel cheap compared to slow-burn horror.
Conclusion
Outlast is like a vintage horror movie—it doesn’t have the polish of modern films, but its sheer intensity still makes it a terrifying experience. If you missed it back in 2013, now is still a great time to play it—just don’t expect it to outshine the best horrors of today.
I was not scared at all (lie...)
Chase scenes increase my heartbeat... I don't want to experience something like that again but will probably continue to do so regardless.
10/10 very good horror game
im like 3 hours in and this is the most terrifying game i have ever played. it takes half an hour to convince myself to play, but when i start i find myself playing for ages
