Synopsis:
In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.
Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

This game is fine but has quite a few problems.
Scripted movements, such as vaulting, climbing, and jumping, are all clunky and unreliable. This can be incredibly frustrating in chapters 4-5, which rely heavily on these movements on short notice. You may find that you will struggle to get away from enemies due to these problems, and that can be incredibly frustrating for a game that leverages the run-and-hide mechanic so often. If there are barriers to this gameplay cycle that feel unfair or disadvantaged, then the deaths feel less deserved. Because of this issue, movement in the game feels very dissatisfying and, at times, frustrating.
Another issue with this game is that it goes on for too long. I am glad I finished it because the final chapter is very well made and feels unique and exciting, both story-wise and gameplay-wise. However, this game could and should have been two chapters shorter. There are far too many "New objective: find this thing. Also, there is a guy with a lead pipe walking around; watch out for him. Oops, the thing you wanted fell/was moved/you fell. New new objective, find a new way to this thing” moments. I think there are four objectives back to back that are all basically "Find a way to get to Father Martin." This is unnecessary, poorly paced, and kills the tension the game works so hard to build.
This game also struggles to be scary after the first few jumpscares (wheelchair guy was pretty much the only one that really got me). The gameplay loop is very formulaic, and after you have experienced around 45 minutes you can tell where the jumpscares are and how they will pop out at you. The game startles you in all of the wrong ways. It utilizes tension and well-designed chase mechanics poorly, instead opting for loud noises and flashy pictures. You don’t feel the anticipatory fear that you get in games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Phasmophobia. There is no rise; instead, you are simply caught off-guard by a loud noise, and you instinctively jump. This game is not scary in the way a good horror game should be; it is intense. It keeps your heart rate up by screaming in your ear, not by making you feel in danger.
The enemies don’t do much to assist with this issue either. Many of the enemies are generic, stupid, and repetitive. They are also all slower than you. You don’t need to hide to win this game; you can outrun every single enemy. If you choose to hide, the search mechanic isn’t good or interesting. The enemy will walk into the room, pick a single hiding place randomly, search there, and then leave. If you happen to be in the hiding spot they pick, it doesn’t matter because they don’t kill you. They will throw you, giving you a good 3-second headstart so you can find a new hiding place. When they reach you again, you will have completely healed, and the next throw won’t matter.
Many tout this game as the best horror game ever made. To counter, I don’t believe this game is even the best horror game released in 2013. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs was also released in 2013, and Outlast doesn’t even stand on the same podium.
Overall the game is okay, but it is not competitive in the horror genre.
This game gives me depression. I set the brightness to max and i still cant see crap. After completing this game, i can say that nothing can scare my anymore hahaha. 10/10 would recommend to any friends
Never played the Whistleblower DLC after launch and having played that recently with a friend decided to revisit the base game too.
Pretty good mechanics even today when considering all the other run/hide horror games and it's smooth enough experience to not get frustrated by one or two hit death -> reload from checkpoint scenes, and these are quite rare unless you run yourself into a deadend.
But given the game is from 2013 the graphics and character model/animation were lot worse than what I remembered, no surprise there but for the current base price tag it's worth a minor sale buy if you like run/hide horror games.
Outlast was my first horror game, and I have to say, it was a wild ride. The atmosphere was so intense that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I never thought I'd finish a horror game, but Outlast proved me wrong.
I've known about this game since I was 7-8 years old. I remembered binge-watching youtubers playing it thinking "Gosh I don't have the balls to play horror games". Now I'm 18 years old and I just finished the game in 4 hours. Life is so weird. I love being a kid. And I think my older self deserves to be a kid once again. Thank you for all of the good memories. And thank you for making me realize that I, still, don't have the balls to play horror games.
This is genuinely the first and only horror game that has ever risen my anxiety. I've played it so many times over the course of the years and it still makes me jump. I enjoy every aspect of the characters presented. This game is right up on my favorite horror games list right next to Alien Isolation <3
This game is a classic survival horror game. After playing through the game a second time now on PC the main frustrating part is not knowing where to go. Mainly in the DLC, I have never played and it I have troubles finding where to go and with more frequent chase scenes and enemies make it more of a nuisance to get through the game.
Other than that little nit pick the game it amazing and I would 100% recommend for someone looking to get into survival horror.
Outlast is an nightmare in the best way possible. You’re armed with nothing but a camera, which somehow makes the whole thing even scarier. The game is pure chaos, filled with creepy sounds, horrifying enemies, and places you definitely don’t want to be. It’s all about running, hiding, and hoping the thing chasing you doesn’t find you.
The atmosphere is unmatched, and the story is as disturbing. If you’re into horror where every second feels like a life or death situation I recommend it.

super family friendly and educational... the part in the DLC where you are strapped to a table has a math lesson, do that part in front of your kids
Played on another platform mainly. This game is very spooky and worth the effort to beat, as the story is really interesting.

Definitely scary and has a pretty good story. This is a must play for any survival horror fans. My main problem with this game is that 99% of the time you have no idea where you are going and there's no map so you end up running around the same hallway 10 times. The night vision makes it very tension filled, but it gets very hard to see after a while especially in the part where you're running outside. There's a lot of cheap deaths in this mostly from not knowing where to go, but I'm guessing they made it that way on purpose. It does getting annoying dying 10 times in a row cause you're looking for where to go next. It's a little boring that there's no items, weapons or puzzles. It is a very good game though. I played through it in 1 sitting. The tension it creates is so good for a horror game. 8/10
I played Outlast in Covid lockdown, it was 2020 december month. I saw some streamers shouting and panicking, told myself they are just whining about a game with simple mechanics. Downloaded cracked version from an illegal site and started playing, first 10 mins were the only part of my 9 hour journey of that night in which my legs weren't shaking, after that every minute a new gang sign was made by me toes. Game mechanics is simple, just hide and do your objectives but sudden twists, jump scares, sound effects (really damn, I'll write a paragraph on it), hope of surviving all of it and that Gyatt Ahh Monster really made this a true survival gem.
1). Graphics are really upto mark for a game like Outlast 1, you will not find a frame lacking.
2). Sound and Music, they are so well done I cant even put it in words, every run, every chase, every time you successfully hide or get brutally killed, music concludes so well that your heartbeat actually gets in sync with it. The sound effect of camcorder, lighting, the effects of hallucination, the sound of someone walking behind you, the minute effect of standing beside a tree while its leaves rustles, I mean Red Barrel really put great efforts in it.
3). Game play is not simple, I purchased it on steam along with its DLC and Outlast 2 (though I played all the two games and DLC but didn't felt like doing justice to the studio so I decided to buy it here), you will say its just run and hide and actually yes, but the tension it creates will surely make you scream. At some point you might close it and will decide to play it in the day time lol. The key mechanic to survive in this game is timing, I try to keep things challenging so I always went for Hard Mode in which batteries for your camcorder are very limited and enemies actually run at near to equal speed of you. Just dont come to bottom and conclude the game for its 1 thing, Outlast is still defeated by none because it gives you the chills you paid for.
Highly recommend it, but play it after 12am, with headphones on.
An absolutely vulgar gore-fest classic that deserves a try from everyone, but the squeamish. I'm not kidding at all, this game does not shy away from brutality, blood and swearing.
Spectacular sound design, lighting, mood and the, oh, so very memorable camcorder. That first moment where you climb inside the building from a window, the lights go out as you hear this creaky, stomach-churning sound, after which the prompt to turn on your camera's night vision comes on screen. Terrifying, truly. However, anxiety only heightens as you progress and are introduced to the inmates and patients of Mount Massive Asylum, the variants. You really came here by yourself with a recorder, bravery and copious amounts of stamina. Let me tell y'all something, you can quite literally run forever, but so can those chasing you. While comical, I appreciate how it encourages the player into a riskier style of play and brings attention toward the chase itself, rather than shying away from it all together. The accompanying music as you run away from these disturbed people down the tight, dark corridors of the asylum is so panic-inducing and great. A lot of intriguing mysteries to uncover, too.
Wholeheartedly recommend.
i tried to play this game back when it came out but i literally couldn't play for more than 30 minutes without feeling like i was about to have a panic attack. replaying it now 10 years later i finally feel like i can handle it but it still made me lose my mind. 10/10
Outlast is a great game, the jumpscares get you and the story is told really well. Love the setting and the camera system is really well done. DLC was fantastic too.
This is one of my favorite horror games! The lore is so interesting and the game is very fun! I've played it multiple times to try different difficulties and get different achievements, which I don't bother doing with most games. If you get it, I HIGHLY recommend buying the dlc, whistleblower! You get to see things happening at the same time in different parts of the asylum in a different perspective. If there's any horror game I recommend to people, it's this one.
Pretty solid horror experience, DLC was pretty good too. Really didn't care for the camera system, a bit on the tedious side.
One of if not the best horror game series, the story is rich and the visuals are amazing. highly recommend.
So scary, felt like a wimp because i didnt want to play. 2.3 hrs on record but 2 hours of it was me with the game open trying to work up the courage to continue. NOT for the faint of heart.
fun game 10/10
if U are muslim
threre nothing to afraid U
may allah be with you
game feels like a tom and jerry cartoon chase typa game. its more funny than actually scary in my opinion. super worth it when you bought it at discounted price
great game, great ambiance, great gameplay, great soundtracks.
Unbelievable, the game still hold it ground after a decade as an one of the best game at all time.
The graphics hasn't been outdate even the game has been released more than 10 years ago. The plot is extremely engaging, even though I don't like horror genre, somehow it kept me going until the end. One thing I really like about Out last is that all the "bloody horror" is revealed throughout the game and isn't censored.
The soundtrack? Good as F.
Playtime: 8 - 10 hours
There is not dount about this game. 10/10
Highly recommend
Although it's a really short game (it took me a little over 3 hours just to beat it for the very first time), I'd say it's a good game. It's definitely not as scary as I expected it to be and I immediately found the game to be significantly less scary once I realized that juking was way more effective than hiding. I do wish the story was told as the game goes on rather than through files and recording but it's fine. I wouldn't say the game is worth $20, but I managed to get it on sale for $3.
Hands down the scariest and most tense game I've ever played. The atmosphere is outstanding and the different antagonists are more disturbing than the last. Not for the faint of heart and not for your little brother this shit be scary
The main game is a solid spook, and while normally I dock points for the evil preacher stereotype, they actually subverted expectations while still keeping with the horror theme. The setting of a mental asylum is done well. The chaos, and degradation of the Asylum over the night makes for a great resolution of the arc. I have to hand it to them for having a jewish sci-fi warlock with the alias "Crypt Keeper" being the antagonist, and tying them to real world horrible occult experimentation.
one of if not the most intense experience ive ever played, so disturbing, so creepy. the feeling you get playing this game is something else. play the main game first then go into whistleblower. WARNING THIS GAME IS NOT FOR THE LIGHT HEART. this game is the art the clown of horror. by far top 5 favorite horror games.
Solid cat and mouse/hide and seek gameplay with some good pacing and presentation throughout. A little heavy on gore, shock value, and jumpscares. Could be a little shorter, especially when you've been trying to find Father Martin for ages. But it's the closest game I've found to an IRL intense spook alley experience, which has some great fun and tension. Solid ending.
7/10 Would recommend, but very little replay value. Especially in the DLC.
Overhyped game imo, this was not scary at all. Story was kinda decent but not worth sitting through the boring gameplay, play SOMA instead
got the game on a steam sale on halloween but have been a fan for a long time. Definitly worth it.
Btw I just recently found out if you go to the game files -> OLGame -> Config and then look through the code you can actually mod the game for yourself. the things I found were speed of yourself and enemies, batteries how many and how long they last and the whole damage system.
Playing both the dlc and base game, it has a different atmosphere that other horror games has to offer. At the beginning can be abit confusing, but later on it becomes less stressful to figure out where to go. The characters is very complex and appealing, will for sure 100% this game in the mid future!!
This is one of THE games to play if you're looking to dive into the horror game experience. Even though it's only 20 euro, you could get it for dirt cheap during steam sales (It legit drops down to like 4 euro)
The beginning of the game is scary and difficult to progress if you haven’t watched a video about it. As the game progresses, you understand the game better and it becomes less scary. It feels like you're speedrunning.
Ambient props and sound effects are good. The madness of the patients is well incorporated into the game. Jump scares in certain places add extra tension to the game.
It deserves its discounted price.
This game make me pissing on my self.It is extremely scary absolutely I recommend it to players who loves the
horror and thanks
Muy recomendable. Historia interesante, en ningún momento se hace pesado o aburrido.
An absolutely vulgar gore-fest classic that needs a test run by everyone dipping their toes into this genre. Amounts of body horror, nudity, swearing and blood that is difficult to describe, so be warned.
Villains unique from one another, but all of them equally as memorable.
Extremely linear progression aside, what I love is the isolating, yet full of life setting, panic-inducing music, unfolding mystery, as well as the variants' differing behaviours and speech.
Everything results in a uniquely crafted atmosphere without match.
Want to say this: whilst being a weak point, the linearity also strengthens the feel, and one of this games' main themes; Moving forward, even though your goal seems like a distant memory. Wholeheartedly recommend.
So good! It’s a really scary game with a lot of jump scares and chases. It’s really hard sometimes but so fun. Definitely recommend this game if u like horror/scary games.
(NOT FOR THE WEAK)
incredibly intense and terrifying horror game that will keep you on edge from start to finish. the game plunges you into a nightmarish environment with superb sound design and visuals that create a constant sense of dread. the abandoned asylum setting is brought to life with meticulous attention to detail, making every corner and distant noise contribute to the overall sense of fear.
the gameplay focuses heavily on stealth and evasion, which means you'll spend a lot of time hiding and sneaking around rather than fighting. this mechanic makes tension high, as you are constantly vulnerable and must rely on your wits to survive. the night vision camera is a brilliant feature, adding a layer of strategy and panic because you need manage your limited battery life while navigating in the dark.
the story is engaging and unfolds in a way that keeps you eager to see what's next, without ever feeling like it's spoon-feeding you information. the pacing is excellent, with just the right balance of exploration, puzzle-solving, and heart-pounding chases. although the dlc is short, it caters the remaining storyline the base game left on perfectly, based on how well their story merges together in the end.
if you enjoy horror games that deliver genuine/classic scares, a gripping narrative, and an atmosphere that stays with you long after you've put down the controller, outlast is an absolute must-play. it’s a masterclass in survival horror, a terrifying experience that is both unforgettable and utterly engrossing. 10/10
Very good game plot, Sound designs, Visuals, When I first played it I was terrified, and that's how you know the devs and team really put effort and hard work into this. Everybody who can, Should definitely try this game, Especially if you're into horror genre.
playing this game while simultaneously being at work doesn't feel so different at all, this place is just like my office 🥰🥰
I love this game but at the same time fuck this game on my first run which was now i almost got all documents and recordings i was 3 documents away from the archivment now i have to redo it all AUUUUGH but good game indeed.
Great game but I loved the whistleblower dlc even more. it was way more scary and impactful despite being shorter. definitely play both!
This game is PEAK 2010s horror. If chases with tense music terrify you then this is the horror game for you. I'd like to add that it has some odd religious references so if you're uncomfy with that i suggest not paying much attention to a certain priest.
Outlast : By Triple F
"Outlast," developed by Red Barrels, is a first-person survival horror game that transports players into the unsettling environment of Mount Massive Asylum, a psychiatric hospital filled with nightmarish sights and terrifying encounters. Released in 2013, the game was widely praised for revitalizing the horror genre with its intense atmosphere, unpredictable enemies, and unique mechanics that strip the player of any ability to fight back. Instead, players are forced to rely on stealth, quick thinking, and a trusty camcorder to survive the horrors within. "Outlast" is a masterclass in horror design, creating an experience that is both deeply frightening and surprisingly immersive.
The story begins with journalist Miles Upshur investigating Mount Massive Asylum after receiving a tip about unethical experiments. The plot unfolds through environmental storytelling, documents scattered throughout the asylum, and encounters with twisted characters who reveal bits and pieces of the backstory. The mystery of the asylum and the sinister Murkoff Corporation behind it is woven with a steady buildup, making each new discovery feel significant. While "Outlast" lacks in-depth character development, the story succeeds in establishing a terrifying, oppressive world that keeps players engrossed, especially with its unsettling twists and revelations as the story progresses.
One of the defining features of "Outlast" is its lack of combat, which forces players to think creatively to avoid threats rather than confronting them. This design choice is pivotal to the game’s horror, as players feel genuinely vulnerable, heightening the tension with every step. The asylum is populated with gruesome, hostile inhabitants, including memorable foes like Chris Walker, a monstrous ex-soldier, and the Variants, patients who have been horrifically altered by the experiments conducted within the asylum. Players must rely on hiding spots, such as lockers or under beds, and must carefully listen to footsteps and ambient sounds to avoid detection. This helplessness sets "Outlast" apart from many horror games, making each encounter feel nerve-wracking and intense.
The camcorder mechanic is both innovative and essential. Players use the camcorder's night vision to navigate the asylum’s pitch-dark rooms and corridors, creating an eerie green glow that adds to the sense of dread. However, the camera relies on batteries, which are scattered sparsely throughout the game, adding a layer of resource management and urgency to exploration. The game’s design encourages players to carefully manage their battery supply, forcing them to make tough decisions about when to use night vision. This mechanic heightens the tension, as running out of batteries in the middle of a chase or dark area can mean certain death, underscoring the horror of the unknown that lurks around each corner.
"Outlast" excels in environmental design, with each section of the asylum contributing to a distinct, oppressive atmosphere. The asylum is filthy, decayed, and filled with disturbing imagery—blood-stained walls, broken furniture, and graffiti that hints at the suffering endured by the patients. The sound design complements the visuals perfectly, with eerie background noises, distant screams, and footsteps that echo down empty hallways, amplifying the fear factor. The visual and audio elements work in tandem to create a space that feels genuinely hostile, keeping players on edge as they explore. Each area of the asylum reveals new horrors, constantly pushing the player’s comfort zone.
Another significant element that enhances the horror is the unpredictability of encounters. Enemies in "Outlast" follow semi-random patterns, meaning players can never be certain of their exact movements, forcing them to remain vigilant at all times. Some sequences, such as narrow escapes from Chris Walker or encounters with the fanatical Dr. Trager, provide moments of extreme tension that feel genuinely cinematic. These encounters aren’t simple “jump scares”; they’re carefully designed sequences that build suspense and give players a sense of accomplishment when they narrowly escape. This unpredictability ensures that the game remains consistently tense from start to finish.
Despite its many strengths, "Outlast" is not without flaws. Some players may find the reliance on stealth and hiding repetitive, especially as encounters become more frequent later in the game. The game’s mechanics don’t evolve much over the course of the story, which may lead to a feeling of predictability. Additionally, the story’s ending has been divisive; while some appreciate the unexpected and unsettling twist, others feel it detracts from the grounded horror experience the game builds up. However, these issues are relatively minor compared to the game’s achievements in horror atmosphere and design.
Ultimately, "Outlast" is a masterfully crafted survival horror game that redefined the genre by emphasizing helplessness, atmosphere, and suspense. Its unique approach to horror, combined with a terrifying setting and well-executed mechanics, has made it a standout title that continues to influence horror games today. While it may not appeal to those who prefer combat-focused horror experiences, "Outlast" delivers a haunting and memorable experience that excels at immersing players in a world of fear. For those brave enough to endure its relentless scares, "Outlast" offers an unforgettable descent into madness, proving that sometimes, survival is the only victory.
This game is more than 10 years old and still AMAZING! Pros and cons are down below
Check out the vid where I showcase ONLY camera footage, I think it turned out pretty cool:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MY6SnusTXM
Pros:
1. This game is literally classics, what can be better than to revisit this gem on Halloween? Super cool, pretty scary even when revisiting.
2. I feel like it's even cooler to revisit if you're an Outlast fan, played the Outlast Trials because it gives more perspective to the story of this game. I found it very amusing to go through notes and lore already knowing much more after playing the Outlast Trials and Outlast 2.
3. After the initial release they've added difficulty levels and for good reason! The hard difficulty is SO MUCH FUN! It's like a new game, enemies are faster, smarter, stronger and feel a lot more like a threat which make the game all the more entertaining especially for horror fans!
Cons:
1. When I was little, I was terrified of this game (10 years ago), now not so much. It's actually not that scary (esp on regular difficulty) as I remembered it, but GOOD thing they've added "hard", def made the experience a lot more fun! Still, if you're an Outlast Trials veteran, this is going to be a breeze.
Honestly my favourite horror game ever.
I played it through twice and still shit my pants at the same jumpscares I knew where coming.
Definitely a classic indie horror title. Played it many times on many platforms. Very well made, and has aged very well.
I decided to try Outlast for a Halloween playthrough and man was this eye-opening. So many people herald this game as an amazingly scary-fun game and this illustrates perfectly how nobody has actually played this game. In fact, the trophies show this, by the fact that the first one you get (turning on the generators) only 47.6% of players have received this. This is in chapter one! You know how long you’re scared in this game? The first five minutes of driving up to the asylum and seeing the shadow in the window. Once you’re inside and running through the same copy-paste corridors and rooms and having to avoid patients who have no real search pattern for you to avoid, it gets stale fast. There is no fighting back, not because it makes the game scarier, but because the developers didn’t want to program even a simple self-preservation raising your arm. This game is a running simulator as you get increasingly frustrated with the lack of direction and the fact that each area has you do the same ‘turn this back on, hide while someone investigates, now go to next area’. I got through 50% before I gave up. When it takes 30 minutes to try and figure out how to continue and that’s with the terribly bad walkthroughs online, I call it quits. The fact that so many games copied this is a travesty in the history of games. I give it a 3, only because hey I never fell through the map! Avoid this game like the plague if you have any interest in having actual fun in a game or wish to actually be scared as you play.
