PROGRESS
Although currently in Early Access, Cogmind is a complete game. There are over two-dozen map types, over a thousand items, thousands of sound and particle effects, multiple plot lines, hundreds of hand-made locations and encounters, thousands of lines of dialogue, and nine different animated endings to discover. That said, there are many plans to continue expanding the world with features and content, so for now we'll just call it EA :D
(Cogmind has been in full-time development for over ten years.)
ROGUELIKE?
Cogmind is a turn-based roguelike, very traditional in many ways (permadeath procedural dungeon crawler built with ASCII in mind...), but at the same time innovates on the genre in terms of both design and accessibility features.
- Within you have full mouse control--and full keyboard control! Use only one or the other, or both, and all common roguelike movement methods (mouse, numpad, vi, arrows) are enabled out of the box, no configuration required. Mouse users get drag-and-drop inventory management, and the keyboard is even faster with its multiple command schemes and built-in automation features.
- Stealth play is just as viable as straightforward combat, using hacking and information warfare to outsmart the Complex. The lack of an XP system means you only have to use whatever means you can to reach new areas and find new gear to advance.
- The world is alive with many types of robots, most of which are actually not hostile to you and have their own duties to carry out.
- Map objects are labeled as they come into view, making for less tedious play and allowing you to instead focus on tactics and survival. A large number of other options and useful features are available to customize the UI.
- While the most skilled players can reliably win the default mode, easier difficulty settings are available for those with less experience, or less time on their hands :) (advanced players can also attempt to take on the extended end-game!)
- Accumulate knowledge across multiple plays, collecting info about previously used items in the ASCII art gallery (over 900 pieces of art!), and collecting lore about the world as you discover its inhabitants and guess at their potential motives, and true capabilities. While there's a rich story to uncover over many runs, know that it doesn't get in the way if you prefer to just strategize and min-max through your roguelikes.
- Take on built-in Challenge Modes for a different kind of experience, or to prove just how good you really are.
WARNINGS
Not every game is for everyone, so there are a few things to point out that may affect your interest in Cogmind.
- No Hand-holding: Although very accessible and there's both context help and a quick tutorial to teach all the fundamentals, Cogmind invites you to explore a completely unfamiliar world. Observant players will come to internalize many of that world's rules naturally, and as you reach new areas you'll also discover in-theme explanations for everything, seamlessly integrated with the lore. As part of that process you'll often be faced with the post-death challenge of figuring out where things went wrong and why, until you eventually reach a point where you can see danger before it even materializes.
- Rampant Item Destruction: Every item in Cogmind can be destroyed, and many of your items will be destroyed. At first this may be discouraging, but once you figure out the basics you'll generally be replacing old and broken parts with much better loot even before you lose it anyway. Building and, more importantly, rebuilding, is a vital part of the experience and what keeps the game dynamic and interesting throughout. Adaptability is key, and amazing comebacks are commonplace.
- No Classes, Skills, Etc.: Unlike many other roguelikes and CRPGs in which you may form a sort of attachment to your character class and the levels, stats, skills, and equipment they've acquired over time, Cogmind is defined almost purely by items. And as mentioned those items will be destroyed, so there's not much chance to form that kind of attachment. However, this also leaves room for great flexibility during a single playthrough, flexibility you might want or need to rely on to maximize your chances for survival depending on what locations you visit.
- A Different Kind of Game: As a whole Cogmind is quite different from pretty much everything out there, a fact that turns some people off, but others rather enjoy it for that same reason. It can also take a little while to get into, but once past learning the basics and how to reliably overcome early-game areas, the world and its opportunities really open up.

The ascii art is awesome and the beginning of the game has been very fun
Seriously awesome game! I have played many rogue-likes over the years and I was hesitating on Cogmind because of the slightly higher price tag, but totally worth it. I know it says early access, but don't let that fool you, the game could be released as a final product right now. Also love how involved the Dev is, he responds to so many questions, posts updates and streams playthroughs. There are a lot tools to make the game accessible to a new player, but if it interests you learning how to use just the keyboard or ascii view is fun all in itself. Definitely worth a go.
The best roguelike ever. I'm in love with it. A pure labor of love, with so much thought put into every mechanic and interaction. I wish for it to get the recognition and praise it deserves one day.
Get scraped nerd
Context: My fondness for low graphic roguelikes started when I was 16 and my newly bought Xbox 360 got the red ring of death right as I caught mono. I had no internet in my new apartment, and nothing but a copy of the original ASCII (free, at the time) ADOM.exe, The UnReal World and Tales of Maj'Eyal. I couldn't get the console fixed for a very long time and had to contend with learning to enjoy those experiences.
If you don't like reading, can't get over the abstract representations or simply can't deal with the repetitiveness of constantly dying and going through the same randomly layed out maze for crumbs of context, this game may not be for you, although if you think you can stomach the concept, but haven't played that kind of game, this might be a good introduction to it, it's playable by mouse and doesn't require erudite levels of prior knowledge to survive 5 min. Finding gear is exhilarating, and getting hunted by the enemies can pit you against laughably impossible odds, I rarely ever get upset at the game over screen and I learn something new every run.
How the #&@% have I not heard of this game until today. Compliments to the chef.
Yeah this game is so fun, you basically build up your robot how you wish and take on the various levels. Super fun and customizable! Want to fire 5 miniguns at once? You can do that B)
Great already and only going to keep getting better
fun
This is the first traditional Roguelike I've played and I'm having a blast! The game is extremely well polished (no surprise, the dev has been working on the game for 11 years now!). Everything from the sound design, ASCII art, accessibility and gameplay is just great. I've rarely played a game with such interesting and integrated lore. It's very carefully sprinkled into the gameplay and I always get excited when uncovering more about the worlds, factions, NPCs etc. There's just soo much content in Cogmind. I haven't even gotten my first win and there are nine different endings with a 10th one coming out in the future.
The dev even has his own website, where he writes blog posts (love reading through them) and participates in discussions. It's just good to see a dev who actually spends time with the community and who takes feedback.
Though, the game is not for everyone, as stated in the game description. The runs of Cogming are long, so long that my average runs last 72 minutes, but I might be a slow player too. Long runs have many positive sides, but it makes it discouraging to take risks. It also means, that you usually don't just die after one wrong decision. It's a rather long process, where you 1) raise the alert level to high or the enemie severes your parts 2) you run around and try to recover 3) you either make a strong recovery, which does happen, or the enemy slowly tickles away your core integrity while you desperately try to find an exit.
But I don't think this process is necessarily bad. The durability system actually makes the game a lot more skill based, because you can't just get one good synergy and you're good to go. You'll have to be adapting constantly, which makes the game difficult, but in a good, skill-based way.
But I understand if players are turned off by this mechanic. Even I wanted to leave a negative review somewhere after 20 hours of playtime, just because I got frustrated with the durability system. But I had this "git gud" mentality and decided to keep going. You get used to it eventually.
I also have to admit, that I refuse to play on an easier mode, other than the intended difficulty, which in Cogmind's case is also the hardest mode. I also try to play 100% blind, so I don't take any tips from outside the game or from the in-game manual. If you don't bother to play on an easier mode, you even get arbitrary save files in runs, but I don't know exactly how they work, because like I said, I only play on Rogue mode.
So in conclusion, it is totally possible to play the game on Rogue without any guides. But you do have to be dedicated and it can get frustrating at times. But once you get the flow of the game (which I have not fully achieved yet) you will be rewarded.
An excellent rougelike. Mouse controls make it easy to get into.
A stellar roguelike that I can't wait to dive deeper into. The unique system of hot-swappable parts and the many ways you can use them is the main mechanic here, and its a blast. You can stealth your way through, or go in guns blazing- though security wont be too happy. There's loads to discover, and lore if you want to look.
Incredible game, keep up the great work developer!
This game is the shining beacon of classic rogue-likes and it deserves way more attention and praise than it gets. The game is difficult but fair and heavily rewards planning and learning from your mistakes. It takes some time to get used to and is definitely not for everyone, but this game feels like it has unlimited potential.
Very cool unique roguelike. The game is deceptively easy to pick up, but has tons of content hiding just beneath the surface.
the battletech traditional roguelike i never knew i always needed
fun game really hard though and not very friendly to new player
very nice very challenging very cool writing is also nice
Cool dungeon-rompy classic roguelike where you play a constantly jury-rigged robot. Very polished.
Took me a while for it to "click", then I realized it's a pacing issue caused by the slightly overlong firing animations, 2x speedhack did the trick. Having an innate animation speed slider in the otherwise excellent game options would be a plus.
Final rating: 4½ tangled-wire robo limbs out of 5.
387.44 millions miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers, and I'm trapped in the middle of them
I'm living in his walls and I'm trying to get out
One of the many games which tries to cling desperately to the old and outdated design of games from 2000 BC.
Cogmind is a game which focuses less on the player experience and more on trying to cram this old "style" down your throat, to the point where I can't be bothered to learn it. You can see what the game is going for, but it's communicated terribly and seems contingent on RNG rather than being a properly-made game.
If you enjoy TRUE roguelikes then you will like this game. As with all true roguelikes, you go on runs where you almost always will certainly fail and die, then start over having learned something new. So lots of short runs to your doom. Simple graphics that are well thought out and the gameplay is full of interesting quirks and mysteries.
A roguelike game that sounds interesting in premise, but ultimately locks you into a number of builds (less than 10). Compare this to traditional roguelike which may provide 2-3 builds for every class, you can see why this game falls short in the replayability department. It somewhat makes up for it in the settings and the secret that you can find, the story is surprisingly competent. I would recommend this to anyone interested in traditional roguelike to just give it a try though.
So, I actually have more than the listed hours. I've put more than 500 hours into this in total, going back to beta 7. I want to like Cogmind. I really want to like Cogmind. It's full of interesting-sounding ideas. So what's the problem? Accessibility. The game has been developed around the top tier of players for years, resulting in swathes of content that almost nobody will ever get to see due to the high difficulty. Worse, the difficulty slowly increases as the new content causes trickle effects that make things harder for newbies without helping them out in exchange. About the only thing that ratcheted the difficulty down was Farcom (a free scan system) but that locks out a lot of content, because of course it does.
I could write an entire blogpost about the innumerable problems I have with the design decisions in this game, but you came here for advice on whether you should buy it or not. No. Why? Because statistically, you are going to get nowhere with it and take longer than the two hour refund period to do so. Almost nobody who buys the game successfully interfaces with it. Unless you're confident that you're one of those top few % of players, in which case go for it. Join the discord and add to the problems while you're at it.
Risk and resource management is at the core of this roguelike. The difficulty starts with being very forgiving and eventually evolves into requiring calculated planning. Early game tends to have a relatively small impact on later game, which means if you lose everything, you still have a chance to recover. You will face many setbacks, but there's always the hope the next room or floor will have just the parts you need to become whatever you'd like: a hyper-speed scout who can see through walls, a rolling titanium cube with enough armor to survive multiple direct explosive hits, or anything in between. There are so many ways to kill and be killed, or even just move and see, in this game, which makes replayability high. A title worth picking up.
A unique little roguelike with a surprising amount of depth. The dev is cool and actively updating the game. If you like roguelikes you'd be a fool to sleep on this one.

A thrilling gauntlet of espionage and action. Plunder and wreck your way to victory in this true-to-form rogue-like.
You are Cogmind: a protean robotic entity with a distinct penchant for trouble. Your mission? Escape the clutches of 0b10 and its endless legions once and for all.
It's a dangerous world for a robot on-the-run. Steel yourself with an arsenal ranging from weaponized data-jacks to neutron bombs and all sort of bolt-throwers, matter-renders and lead-belchers. Create a ruckus and scour the remains for prized goodies. Snag experimental hardware: supercharged reactors, nuclear powered thrusters, shield generators, signal jammers and more. Haunt the corridors and twist the labyrinth to your need. Print out extra gadgets till you get caught and then make a bold escape through the venous garrison access.
Cogmind provides a level of suspense usually reserved for the most gripping of real-time action or stealth games. Durability is a core mechanic of the game. It will make you covet your special gubbins and wince when they eat a critical hit. Fortunately, your loadout can usually be quickly swapped as the situation arises. Zones become expansive and a plethora of diverging paths provide strategic and narrative variety. Challenging on Rogue difficulty but has a couple nicer difficulties as well.
Its been a very long time since i have come across a game that has put me into this level of obsession. I am spending half the time researching best ways and the rest playing. I give this game a 10 out of time
I do not have enough energy to move. 10/10, would be paralyzed again!
Rocket Launcher my beloved
I like to frag out yeah!
Despite there being so little content online about this game, I somehow stumbled across it. Ive only discovered the surface i feel but this game has so much to offer. Every new run has something new to offer. im always learning new things, you're capable of things you couldn't even imagine in this game. If any of you are familiar with Cyberpunk as a table top role-playing game this is kind of like that. Definitely recommend, the sound design is also immaculate.
The sound effect for entering siege mode is worth the price of admission
I am not a roguelike gamer but really enjoying this one. I am addicted - the only problem is even though it runs well on Steamdeck, everything is so small that I much prefer to play on my laptop/desktop.
taught me that the best way to become stronger is to ambush people and steal their limbs 10/10
REAL derelicts plug in EVERY prototype and input 20% succes commands into EVERY terminal
111111111110000000000000000000000000% chune
This game is so esoteric for someone like me who only plays normal stuff but its really fun regardless.
Coggers.
this game is
coggy
its 2024 and the excuse for having to memorize hacking codes in game instead of a in game journal that remembers them is, "this is how it used to be, so its more fun". thats nostalgia baby, and i dont have it, so im out.
This is a gem. A classic Rouglike with modern QoL like mouse controllable interface, interactive map, graphical tileset. I only scratched the surface of what the game has to offer but even in the first two runs the world seems very much alive and intriguing. Cannot wait to get deeper (or shallower as it seems you are moving up throught the layers).
Attrition: The Game
If you hate games where every death is a death by a thousand frustrating cuts, then avoid this game like the plague.
Cog my mind, babe
I like being sneaky.
mad fucking game
alert the tuzla military that you are in their sex dungeon
fight over 2.5 pieces of copper and steel
lose
Very like Caves of Qud in design - perhaps a bit tighter and more intuitive, perhaps a better design of meaningful freeform interaction with other factions.
It's a huge game (probably not as big as Caves of Qud, but that's a very high bar!) and keeps getting bigger.
The mechanics are good, a proper scripted rougelike with some rough plot guidelines. Lots of fun.
I love this.
yeah
Very challenging game with great polish and frequent updates. Exploring the great lore by hacking terminals and talking to derelict robots is fun.
10/10 aesthetic as well
Pick up this game, you won't regret it!!
I like game! A bit challenging so far since it's my first roguelike, but I think the difficulty progression makes sense. Watching the "how to pwn the early game" helps
