ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) is one of the most successful roguelike games ever created, boasting a brilliant mix of story, RPG, exploration, and intensely strategic and flexible combat. The Steam version adds various Deluxe features like achievements, difficulty level customization and various play modes (e.g. a story mode allowing to save and restore games, a weekly challenge game, an exploration mode and more). ADOM has been in development since 1994. In 2012 its development was revitalized with an immensely successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, now allowing us to offer ADOM both with ASCII and graphical modes enabling you to choose freely.
ADOM is primarily known for being the first roguelike to include vibrant towns, NPC dialog, and quests, but it offers more than just a rich story line in a complex fantasy world:
a huge game world with hundreds of locations such as towns, randomized dungeons, elemental temples, graveyards, ancient ruins, towers and other secrets
loads of races (dwarves, drakelings, mist elves, hurthlings, orcs, trolls, ratlings and many others) and even more classes (fighters, elementalists, assassins, chaos knights, duelists and much more) allowing for infinite play styles
hundreds of monsters and items, many with enhanced random features
a corruption system forcing you to balance lust for power with fear of damnation (corruptions slowly transform you into a vile monster but at the same time grant inhuman benefits - most of the time)
spells, prayers, mindcraft, alchemy, crafting and more
dozens of quests and branching story lines
numerous wildly different endings that might alter reality itself (simply drive Chaos away or slay a god or even become an immortal yourself, and others more)!
various game modes (story mode to be able to load and save games, challenge mode to face peculiar weekly challenges, exploration mode for a free wand of wishing and more)
various customization options (turning hunger off, turning corruption off, modifying monster difficulty or treasure rates)

THE FUTURE OF ADOM
Is ADOM a complete game? Yes, a very complete game. A multitude of endings, varied approaches to game play, thousands of starting combinations and an extensive storyline filled with endless details makes for an extremely satisfying experience that justly positions ADOM as one of the big five foundational roguelike games.
Is ADOM a finished game? No. As long as there is interest in the game we will continue to evolve and enhance it. In this respect ADOM differs from many other games on Steam in the best tradition of roguelike classics: We will continue to add both UI enhancements and new content to the core game in order to make it the most complete RPG ever. Buy once, play forever!

||----------| [0/10] Not fun!
Reviewing this from memories back in 2015 I only lasted 7 minutes.
Not a game for me :(
If you enjoy poring over compendiums of information for context this is the game for you. My very best advice, use Ctrl + F to search for text in page while having multiple tabs open on a separate device, because you will either die so, so, so much or come to terms with processing around a master's thesis worth of information. I have played this game for twenty years and I still have pages for corpse effects, statues, locations, ultra ending quest requirements, and pool effects up regularly.
Sounds daunting? It is. You'll die a lot regardless. I die a lot.
But! it is interesting because it is so complex. There are mysteries no one has solved. There are ten thousand flavor comments and creature descriptions. There are alternate endings and so much entertaining depth. Just be ready for setbacks. So many setbacks.
it's a classic. Personally, i prefer a very similar (and free!) roguelike, DCSS (dungeon crawl - stone soup) to ADOM. ADOM has some gamebreaking bugs that show up here and there and i find some of its mechanics frustrating to interact with. ADOM has one notable advantage over DCSS: its towns and quests. Still, they're pretty bare-bones, and i find i prefer the improvements DCSS has made to the core roguelike gameplay and its still-thriving community of players and volunteer developers over ADOM's storyline and quirks. All this said, if you are dead-set on experiencing your traditional roguelikes through steam with a fancy tileset, ADOM is still a great game to pick up.
Fun game!
Lack of item/weapon descriptions and janky barebones ASCII menus are unacceptable for a paid roguelike.
I'm not a huge fan of classic roguelikes but this particular one just works well to me.
ADOM is an absolute masterpiece in the roguelike genre. From the moment you dive into its vast, rich world, you're met with an experience that is both challenging and deeply rewarding. What sets ADOM apart is its sheer depth—every playthrough feels unique, and there’s always something new to discover. Whether it's the different character classes, races, or the dynamic storylines that evolve with your decisions, there’s a staggering amount of content here.
Game crashed and brought me back 30,000 turns when I rebooted. It's absolutely baffling, as there were at least 100 saved games since that time. I was really loving finding another classic roguelike, but now it feels pointless if I'm going to lose a weeks worth of heavy playing, completely randomly, after saving the game many many times. How is that even possible? The saves should be overwriting. Bleh.
UPDATE: I started playing again from that reboot point. Saved game 40000 turns later. Game says it can't save the game and crashes out again. Trying to open the save game now results in error and crash. So much time wasted, such a fun game that is now useless. How do you allow a game to not be able to save or open its saves?
This is my favorite rogue-like game, and I've been playing them since the original rogue in the 80's. ADOM was better than rogue or nethack back in the day, and none of the more modern rogue-likes have reached ADOM's level. This game is a lot of fun but very difficult, I've been playing ADOM for more than 25 years and have literally never beat the game, most of the time I never even get close to winning. The graphical improvements in this version of the game are well worth it, and it's now my favorite version of the game.
The best roguelike of all time
