I played this on PS3. It was fun, but had a lot of technical issues. I heard the PC version was better, so one of my friends bought me a copy on Steam. However, this version of the game WILL NOT LAUNCH.
I repeat: The Steam version will not launch.
So, how did I manage to play it for 77 mins? Simple, I downloaded a pirated version of the game. That version works perfectly. I then placed those files in the Steam folder, so Steam could launch it. Unfortunately, it isn't working with achievements. (Hence 0 trophies despite 77 mins of gameplay.)
In short, don't wast your money on this broken version. All you're getting is software that's literally unusable.
Currently unplayable due to an "Updating Executable" bug that prevents the game from launching. Have tried tens of different troubleshooting methods from steam discussion pages and online forums, nothing has worked. I would not recommend anyone purchase this game as there is a good chance you will never be able to even launch it. The game is great and I would love to suggest it, but currently you would be throwing money in the trash.
Very enjoyable turn based game with some nice base management and squad tactics.
So far only played EU (Enemy Unknown) and not the expansion (which is pretty much the same game but with some new added features).
Apart from some graphical glitches and a few bugs here and there, I can highly recommend.
I absolutely hate turn-based RPGs with passion, and turn-based tactics gems probably too. That said, even haters can love this environment-based-tactics game. You know, like eating spicy food when you can't take even one sliver of hotness...
The wicked-good continuation of arguably THE BEST squad-level, turn-based, tactical strategy series to ever grace the libraries of those who've ever played it. Perfectly designed game-play, excellent replayability, and a super-solid story to dive into, I find myself with literally nothing negative to mention, though that doesn't mean you won't, I would recommend you get yourself a copy, and hopefully you can get it on sale with all the DLC (They're good too, and add lots of new looks for your soldiers).
Only purchase if you aren't one of those Alien sympathizers...
You're not an Alien sympathizer, right?

The Steam version of this game is broken, it's stuck on "Updating Executable". On Windows, some people reports out there's workaround that works for them but I couldn't get it to work (possible Win10 vs Win11?). If you're on Steam Deck, you're totally out of luck. There's also reports that GoG version works just fine, so maybe you want to grab this game from there. It's possible that this issue will never get fixed by 2K since this issue has been there for a while, I wish Steam takes this game down from sales until it is fixed.
Title currently can't launch even with moderate user-side tinkering.
Likely excessive poorly configured DRM on ancient games has rendered the title unplayable. Stay away unless fixed.
A pity since this game was a masterpiece. If the company ever gets its ethical act together and lets people access what they've paid for I'll update the review.
Very good game, really bad publisher. They literally break the game and you got to do your own work to fix it. Currently if Enemy Within DLC is installed the game cannot be launched which makes no sense. XCOM is a game that defined a whole new genre. Sadly over the years no other game made "turn-based" this good. The best "X-Com like" game is the Xcom itself. Just don't buy from here though. Whoever makes this game unplayable doesn't deserve your money.
Loved the classic XCOM. Love XCOM Enemy Within, Enemy Unknown, and XCOM 2.
Got to play for 13 hours before the games just decided to stop launching. This is an Issue with several players and nothing has been done to fix it. I have fresh installed. Deleted all folders. Changed resolution. Nothing works. Thankfully I can't get a refund either. Thanks, Steam.
Game doesn't work on windows 11, and steam won't refund me.
DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE A WINDOWS 11 USER
Don't usually leave reviews but this game is both on sale, and wont launch with the whole "updating executable" thing happening. Its basically promoting a scam. 2k is making adjustments to their launcher in the coming days, and I'm hoping it somehow fixes it, but I doubt it will; Xcom Enemy Unknown hasen't been supported by the launcher for some time now. Until further fixes are made, DO NOT BUY. happy to change this if it gets fixed.
another broken game that steam is actively discounting when they know it doesn't work. gotta love launching an old game you have played multiple times over the few years you have owned it. just for it to not work because steam didnt do their job "updating executable" my ass. fix your shit or take it off the market you scammers. games great when it works btw.
This game is currently unplayable, the launcher gets stuck at "updating executable". Customer support can't offer a solution.
Great Game! Always try Enemy Unknown first when you are new to the game and then play a second run and all following ones with Enemy Within.
The game is very good but you can't play at the moment...
I can't recommend this to new buyers due to that...
will change review when the game is fixed...
Was a great game that I enjoyed replaying. Now, it wont run and 2K support doesn't care. I cannot in good conscious recommend a game that is broken and the creators wont keep updated for digital purchases. It's sad too because I really liked this game.
This game is not compatible with Windows 11 and should not be listed for sale by Steam any longer. The various "fixes" people have employed over the years very simply do NOT work. You'll spend hour jumping through hoops, trying different things to get the game to launch - compatibility modes, run as admin, etc ad infinitum, but nothing works. So, do yourself a favor and buy something else instead.
Trash. Will not launch. Waste of money past windows 10/11. May potentially run on linux using proton?
This was one of my favorite games when it came out. I've plugged literally over 100 hours into it and loved every minute. Truly a great game that deserved it's success.
So why am I not recommending it?
BECAUSE 2K AND THEIR STUPID MALFUNCTIONING DRM LITERALLY MAKES THE GAME UNPLAYABLE NOW. I HAVE LOST ACCESS TO A PRODUCT I PAID FOR BECAUSE OF THEIR INCOMPETENCE.
Tactical squad gameplay and shadowy quasi govermental management? Sign me up.
one of the quintessential strategy games
Ive had this in my library for years. i redownloaded it in order to try and import characters to XCOM2. it doesnt load. ive deleted save game files, uninstalled and reinstalled etc. kind of bullshit i cant play a game i paid for.
They have broken the game, it literally doesn't launch for anyone I know, just stuck on "updating excecutable". Apparently it might be some DRM verification crap broken on 2K's servers.
Apparently if you keep launching the game over and over it will randomly start working.
This can range from a few hrs to months.
Just go buy it on GOG or pirate it, dont give a company that sells a broken product your money
Honestly this kind of DRM stuff should be illegal, I should be able to revert back to a working version of the product I paid for.
Do you own a widescreen monitor? Then DO NOT BUY. The game is and has been broken for larger monitors for years. The game will look fine, you can even play it with an xbox controller. But forget about using a mouse. The mouse borders are not fixed and you won't be able to click half the buttons in the game. Furthermore, moving soldiers is inaccurate and looks as buggy as it actually is (you have to aim three squares to the left of where you actually want to go etc).
A recent change (either by steam or 2K) has made new installs of the game unable to launch. Downvoting until the issue is fixed. Otherwise, great game.
something was changed recently and now the game wont start for a grand majority of players, supposedly it fixes itself after a few days of waiting but this is unacceptable, 2K dosent need to make any changes to this or xcom 2 unless its for a remaster.
Anyways, stay away until 2k fixes their shit.
Game is broken and will not launch. No word from the devs either lmao. Civ V is screwed as well. Thanks 2k!
Game doesn't work. Won't launch, I've done hours of troubleshooting, I only get a few hours a week to game, tired of spending it all trying to get Steam to run.
Game no longer launches correctly - Gets stuck on "Updating Executable" for a while and then quits. Persistent problem affecting many people for the past month with no fixes.
Cant launch the game for some reason says "launching updating executables" and just never launches.
One of the best Turn based RTS games of all time , enemy within was my childhood , i somehow completed this game at the age of 10 on xbox 360 lol . And after playing it many other times with Mods and DLC and playing Xcom 2 it still holds up to this day. This game is generally harder than Xcom 2 but simpler making it a great starting point on lower difficulty .
One of the best turn based tactic games out there, and one of my favored games of all time. Might not look it, but i have thousands of hours playing this and Xcom 2 on other devices.
Good fun. Feeds Sci-Fi cravings. Complete game out of the box.
Pro-human & pro-Earth messaging/theme.
twice the stun gun failed at 90% and left the soldier exposed. what is the point of this useless piece of rubbish?
i cannot recommend this game
I SAVED THE EARTH, YOU'RE WELCOME.
Nah but all jokes aside I have recently been looking to boost my collection by buying games that are extremely discounted and can run on anything and this is a perfect example of that. I have never been a fan of turn based RPGs, or sci-fi and aliens but XCOM really managed to captivate me and held my attention for over 50 hours.
To summarize the game is cheap, fun and can run on anything. Definitely worth it if on sale and can go as low as 1.49 GBP
I've never liked turn based games or strategy games and always wrote them off as boring. I tried 2 of them and said that was that. Since i bought my gaming pc i wanted to try more games outside my comfort zone but still fell in the cycle of playing the same old stuff. I also wanted to play older stuff i missed out on and stuff i thought would run better on pc. I picked up the entire xcom collection during the turn based sale for cheap with the thought of a refund in my mind. i already had the idea that i wasn't going to like it and i couldn't have been more wrong. I've always been into sci-fi and alien movies and reading about this game made me want it despite not being a fan of turn based games. Its a nice change of pace since becoming bored of games lately. This game is exactly what ive wanted in an alien game and im over a decade late. Enemy unknown is fantastic and a great entry not only to the franchise but into this genre of games as a whole. Currently working on the enemy within and playing that right after EU makes me feel like the dlc completes the package with more customization and abilities. The gameplay is very simple but the game is very challenging. i cant remember the last time i yelled at the tv this much with a game every time a soldier misses a shot. Im just starting this franchise and if xcom 2 is as good as the reviews and community suggest then I might have a new top 5 game franchise on my hands or possibly even higher
One of the best games. Wanted to play it again. Steam has destroyed the option to play on newer systems. Don't get it if you have win 10 or newer
Do NOT get this game under any circumstances. Some sort of recent patch has made new installs unplayable for a lot of people, so until that is fixed save yourself some money and do not buy.
The game crashed part way through and never booted up again, even after verifying files and reinstalling. The thoughts I have for what I was able to play are below:
---------------------------------------------------
In videogame design, there is a principal of "Ratio of Depth to Complexity". The goal is to maximize the amount of depth you can get out of game mechanics, while minimizing how complex the game is to do that.
With that said, XCom is very complex, but lacks the strategic depth I was promised. Pardon the comparison, but it feels very "Casual" compared to classic Fire Emblem, dumbed down because they are afraid of people not being able to do basic math. Fire Emblem came out over 30 years ago, and this game still insists on using frustrating and baffling design decisions that have higher complexity, but have less depth than most Fire Emblem games and even Valkyria Chronicles. Despite being released in the modern era.
A list of frustrating mechanics that add nothing to the game and have been done much better elsewhere:
- Not being able to see enemy stats
- Not being able to see enemy movement and firing range
- Not being able the percentage chance cover and half-cover gives you or the enemy.
- Player stats that are poorly explained and even outright lies.
- Not being able to see your own firing range until after movement
- Not being able to undo movement if you haven't taken an action
- Randomized damage values
- Randomized enemy placement
- Insta-kill alien enemies
- Randomly deciding if a soldier can be revived or not
- Not being able to see your own weapon stats mid-mission, so you don't know the minimum amount of damage you will do.
This game doesn't give you the tools you need to plan a solid and in-depth strategy beyond 1 turn, meaning that you have to either just roll with unfairness, or save-scum to deal with stuff that you didn't have the means to account for. You can't effectively lead an army if the game forcibly blindfolds you from having what you need to know to succeed.
Not to say it's a horrible game, but it's not what the hardcore strategy game people hyped it up to be.
I played XCOM: ENEMY UKNOWN/WITHIN for the 1st time in 2024 and I gotta say, the game really holds up and is one of the best games in the turn-based tactics genre even 12 years after release.
PROS:
- massive amount of content, especially maps, of which there are so many you'll almost never have to replay same ones during a 30+ hour playthrough
- game is dirt cheap on sale so it's incredible bang for your buck
- tons of replayability, especially with mods
- graphics still look pretty decent
- audio is great
- offers endless options for different playstyles, team compositions, equipment, modifiers, etc.
- air combat and base building isn't particularly exciting, but it serves as a nice break of pace after the turn-based battles
- the mission where the aliens are breeding inside a massive whale is amazing. I wish we had more missions like that in this genre.
- very polished overall
CONS (these are really just minor complaints, none of them take away from the overall great impression):
- it misses a couple quality of life features that newer games have, but nothing drastic
- the story is really dumb, like something out of a 90s sci-fi action movie. However, XCOM really isn't the sort of game you should play for the story.
- the game was maybe a bit too easy? I started out on normal difficulty and then increased it to classic, but I still felt practically invincible for the later two thirds of the game. Maybe on impossible difficulty it offers more of a challenge late-game.
- the insane randomness can get annoying at times. Experienced soldiers really shouldn't be missing 98% hit chance shots so often.
TLDR: if you're into turn-based tactical games, this one is a must. Go buy it!
This is more forgiving than the OG, UFO Defense, but acquiring loads of cash is more difficult. The combat system is overhauled and the troops are not pawns to sacrifice like in the first games of the series. This is compensated by a cover system I grew fond of after a short play. The game keeps a grip on the player with challenging encounters all the way to the end of the game, whereas the originals are more frontloaded and can be crushed easily if you know what you're doing.
The style of tactical turn-based gameplay of this reboot seems to be mimicked in other games, but this executes that style the best. Making this a modern classic and an example that an old dog can learn new tricks.
Sadly the game doesn't work anymore. It freezes and crashes after missions very constiently, making progress almost impossible. Very sad - I deeply love this game. But I haven't been able to play it in years due to this issue across multiple saves, installs and machines.
Holy S---, so much fun. I've never played an XCOM game before or even turn based RTS's. but this one is amazing. Alot of tough decisions to make and depending how you manage your resources in your hq, it can quickly go to hell. This game has a perfect amount of stress to pay off. nothing is more crisp than getting a life saving snipe with a 20% chance of it hitting. It even competes with banana bread at work dude, hell yea.
This game is a classic and arguably one of the best games of 2010-2020. If it was at that time I was posting this review it would without question be recommend. Unfortunately at this time the game is unplayable as it will not launch on newer systems, as others have already pointed out. There is no mention of this on the store page. If you take the risk and it doesn't work please remember the return window for steam games and promptly refund.
If I try this game on day again and it does launch I will change my review.
Update... After failing to launch all day yesterday (stuck at 'updating executable') today it went onto the next step and finished the install and finally launched... Hit and miss but I'll recommend it.
It's just a game about luck. I do everything possibly I can right, play slowly, just for my soldiers to miss six consecutive shots. I swear, I hit only 20% of my shots while the aliens are hitting at least 70% of theirs. It's like chess with dogwater RND. Complete waste of time, I was having fun until I literally just ran out of luck.
I'm recommending this game in spite of how much I dislike the turn-based strategy/tactics genre as a whole because it is an amazing starting point for someone like me who doesn't play these types of games in the first place. XCOM Enemy Unknown helped me realize that I don't like this genre of game all that much and it did so without ever becoming frustrating or annoying to play, and I think that's saying a lot for a game that spawned the "%85 chance to hit with the gun barrel clipping into the alien's head" meme.
The only other turn based action game I liked was Pokemon Emerald whenever that came out. This game SLAPS. I'm so addicted to it. Every battle is a rush and gets my heart racing. The stakes feel so high. The permadeath of your soldiers and the doomsday clock are ever present and keep the game feeling so intense. I absolutely love this game.
I love coming back to this game over the time. And although i had some problems with running the game in 2024, it was addressed quickly. Thumbs up!
