Unfortunately I have to give this a negative review. Like others I have had this game for years and enjoy it.
However whatever update, DRM or launcher has made this unplayable and the length of time that the issue has remained is unacceptable. This has given pause to whether I will invest in civ 7 if this continues.
I'm getting so sick and tired of these game companies removing the ability to play older games. now the game just doesnt open anymore. i love modern gaming and companies :D

To be clear, XCOM Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within are great games. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend that you currently (January 2025) purchase the game on Steam, because of some kind of error going on preventing many people, including myself, from launching and playing the game. You can check the Steam forums and other places on the internet - when you launch the game, Steam will say "Updating Executable" but the executable never updates and the game never launches.
I've tried every solution people have suggested and none of them worked for me. There's many people who say the solutions don't work for them either. Some people suggest that you have to wait a while; I've waited a few days and still not succeeded. I'll happily change my review to positive if the issue ever gets fixed - apparently 2K said they fixed the issue last month yet many people (again, myself included) are still having the problem. Some users suggest it has to do with Steam's old DRM that is out of date called CEG (Custom Executable Generation) but I'm no expert in any of that. Many users report the GOG version of XCOM EU/EW works just fine.
So, buyer of the Steam version beware!
::EDIT:: So, after I posted this review, the game started working again. Coincidentally, someone else on the forums had the same experience. I'm still tentatively going to keep this negative because so many people are still having problems
while the game is good, it currently has an issue wherein the game arbitrarily refuses to launch without any rhyme or reason. as such, i cannot recommend this game.
The Steam version of the game is currently unplayable - avoid.

A game I've bought and paid for with my hard earned money doesn't work. Super baffling how a game is still allowed on Steam that doesn't work. I was super excited to start my X-COM play-through just to be met with "Updating executable" for it to end up not launching at all.
No word from 2K nor Steam. Would not recommend purchasing any 2K titles on any platform as this isn't just a singular issue with X-COM but also including Civ 5 which also doesn't want to launch. This all occurred after I noticed there was an update released for the games...
Once they removed the 2K Launcher from their games, even on their FAQ it was listed:
"Q: Will I lose access to any of my games?
A: No, so long as you purchased the game on Steam or Epic, you’ll continue to have access to it on that platform."
That was clearly a lie, even after having uninstalled the game, reinstalled a bunch of times, do a clean wipe of all folders relating to X-COM and running multiple verify integrity checks for the game to still not working is laughable.
What a great start to a new year by sending out a patch that bricks the games that you paid for. Tremendous job...
Update Edit:
It's in the middle of the night, at 12:55 AM on Wednesday of January 8th, 2025. I decided to give this game one more shot in terms of it launching, low and behold it magically starts up again. I have no clue why or what caused my game to finally start back up again. Nothing new was added, the game wasn't added to any of my game update logs either...
I managed to start the tutorial and am able to play X-COM again. Hopefully this bug doesn't occur again, but I will leave my review as negative as many others are unfortunately also still experiencing this bug. With no real explanation as to why the game started up again, I am still super cautious on this bug reoccurring again with the "Updating executable".
I will re-update my review to POSITIVE once I have fully finished my X-COM play-through AND 2K or Steam provides an explanation as to why the game took such a long time to be fixed or what even caused this in the first place. Before that, my review will stay NEGATIVE.

Do not spend Money on a bricked Game
XCOM is one of my favourite turn based strategy games, and for a good reason. It is one of the games the entire genre gets compared to. "Is it like XCOM?"
It is not as punishing or difficult some people make it out to be, play on easy/normal difficulty with save scumming allowed and it is enjoyable and still somewhat frustrating and forces you to think.
If you like turn based RPGs, sci-fi, and good team customization you should give it a shot.
Basically doesn't run these days. Do not spend money on this unless they're willing to get their act together and make the software that they are selling for actual money... run...
Game worked fine for years and for some reason will no longer run on steam. Been a problem for just about everyone and the issue is months old with no attempt by steam or Firaxis to fix it. Sad!
Unfortunately, after contacting 2K games and asking about the issue, it seems the updating executable doesnt have a solid fix that 2K can advise on, as such I am leaving a negative review as the game is literally unlaunchable right now on steam. I am hopeful that 2K comes forward and fixes the issue, until then I am surprised steam is still allowing the sales of this title.

Recently has a common bug that prevents the game from opening, but other than that is an incredible game. Apparently only a problem on Steam, so I highly recommend buying it somewhere else.
Game no longer launches at all. Previously ran fine. But recent update from Steam has caused game not to launch at all anymore. There are scores of player 'fixes' on discussions etc, but none of them actually work. Majority of players are unable to launch a game that used to launch fine.
This is a new issue because 2k/Steam added DRM to previously working games. And now they don't work. You can purchase this game from multiple other vendors (gog.com) without DRM and it runs fine.
the game has a problem launching, and for as long as the problem has been going on you would think they would have a fix for it. at this time I would recomend not wasting your money on it until the company fix's the problem. It is real sad because the other games are pretty good.
Do not buy until/if they fix the executable bug preventing the game from launching.
This game won't launch. I have 100+ hours into it and recently attempted to boot it up again. I've done every piece of troubleshooting possible - reinstalled, compatibility mode (for steam, and the game), launch as admin and many other things. 2K has been sitting on a bug and either doesn't know how or just refuses to fix it.
We'll see how the refund request goes.
it is fun if you are into this style of game. The issue is the game straight up doesn't work right now. The majority of the player base can't even get to load the game on steam. it's been broken for months and there's a known fix for it but the devs refuse to actually fix it. There's radio silence from 2K and Steam about the issue and the game is still on the Steam store when they know it's not working.
In short I want to recommend the game but I can't. This is a bad look for Steam and 2K and honestly there should be more outrage than there is now about it just on the principle of what's happening.
I'll never understand why companies that make money from these franchises don't invest a little money in developer time to ensure these games remain playable -like even once a year hire one person to make sure that the game launches, you know?
Game has lauching issues due to DRM problems. This is a known issue but they will never fix it.

The Steam version of this game no longer works. It will be stuck "updating executable" and never launch.
It appears to be a DRM issue not present on the GOG version so if you desperately want the game, buy it there; unless Steam arbitrarily decides they finally want to do the bare minimum quality moderation (impossible outcome).

DO NOT BUY THIS ON STEAM UNTIL THE LAUNCHER IS FIXED!!!
So 2K decided to shut down their own launcher and with that they did a update to all versions of this game on all PC storefronts. What this means is that we don't have to install the 2K launcher to play the game and we SHOULD be able to just click on the game in our library and instantly play. I say SHOULD because they completely messed up the Steam version! I believe I know why the error keeps happening where we try to launch the game and it says "Updating Executable" but doesn't launch.
Now we all know that when we launch the game there would be a Pop Up of what version we want to play, either Enemy Unknown or Enemy Within. The problem is the Launcher application is not in the files for the Steam version. For those that don't know, that is the program to tell the computer to run the game. I know this for 2 reasons.
Number 1, if you go to any game in your Steam library and go to the Local Files, there will be a file that has either the game logo, name, or for older games it will say RunMe, and if you double click on it the game will launch. That is supposed to be the Launcher application. Sometimes the file will be in a specific folder, BUT it should be there. That is, currently, not the case for Xcom on Steam. At least that is the problem I'm having. If you check and see the files on your computer and you have the Application launcher and the game still won't run then they messed with something else in the files.
Number 2, I bought the game on GOG.com and compared the files to see if there were any differences and GOG version has the Launcher application and runs perfectly fine. You can select which version of the game you want to play and I haven't had any issues. Granted, I don't know about the Epic version or MAC but I'm not wasting another dollar on this issue.
I've tried launching the Steam version with only the base game installed and it didn't work. I've tried Verifying the files and Steam says there's nothing wrong. The only way for this to be fixed is if Valve gets involved and tells 2K to fix this, but I don't know if that'll happen with the game being 12 years old.
Also I'm currently on Windows 11, but I don't think that's the problem cause I was playing this back in May 2024 and didn't have any issues until they did this update.
So until this gets fixed, if it ever does, here are our options on how to play the game:
1. Buy the game on a different storefront
2. Go play it on Xbox or Playstation
3. Try to fix it ourselves with either Mods or if you have the tech skills to mess with files and programs

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a tactical strategy game and reboot of XCOM: UFO Defense (released in 1994). The player is tasked with leading the enigmatic XCOM organization, with the purpose of defending the world from an alien invasion. Players need to assemble a squad and advance on enemy alien positions, using cover and flanking to complete objectives and neutralize the opposition. Additionally, players also must manage their base and prioritize different facilities, research and upgrades to increase their squad's strength, equipment and abilities. Make no mistake, this is a tough game even on lower difficulties. Having several poor mission outcomes can easily derail your entire campaign. Soldiers who fall in battle are permanently gone, and I often developed strong attachments to them, especially because they can be customized in different ways. This made each and every tactical choice more weighted, due to the consequences of this. But on the other hand it also allows for a more rewarding and emotional experience. Since enemy positions and items are always procedurally generated, this game has quite a lot of replay value. Ultimately, for those who want to experience intense tactical combat, consequential decision making, and soldier and base management, XCOM: Enemy Unknown fits the bill.

I've had this game for a long time and enjoyed it but now, after so long, I want to play it again, but I suddenly can't! "Updating Executable". 2K screwed up the game. Now it's literally unplayable. For a game I have owned for so long, it's idiotic to now make the game unplayable.

Get a "Updating executable" message in steam as i start the game and then it stops. Tried numerous things to fix it without success. Avoid at all costs until it has been fixed, or 2k even address the issue.

Unchecking the DLC allowed me to boot the base game. I think closed the game and re-ticked Enemy Within and let it download and now i can play fine. Really weird bug, they should get on fixing this asap.

Game doesnt launch.
Only solution in the forums is replace some core files with files from the GoG release of the game. This gets the game to launch and play for me, but it is very very buggy and weird. Game locks up. Game stopped having sound.
Buy the GoG version or just wait for them to (hopefully) fix whatever has gone wrong with this.
The fourth game this week I cannot play anymore because of the unwanted removal of an unwanted 2K launcher.
Click PLAY button and get a message "Updating Executable".
It's really against my standards to abuse the review system for this, but I feel I don't have choice.
Hundreds of players with the same problem and not even a quick message from a random 2K employee to tell us they are aware of the problem and fix it.
Game is broken. Don't buy. It can't start, probably because it had DRM and it was badly removed.
This is like the fifth game on steam i've tried to play with a cacophony of problems. would it kill you guys to vet this shit first? and for the love of god, have more support if you're gonna put on crappy buggy garbage....
This game was (and is) awesome and a veritable masterpiece. Unfortunately, it appears that with the demise of the 2K Launcher this game joins another handful of games that will no longer launch. Even doing a hard wipe and re-install doesn't fix the issue. For the time being stay away from this title until 2K gets it resolved.
Does not run anymore DO NOT BUY. Cannot run under windows 11. A lot of supposed fixes but they didn't work for me. will do the whole wait a few days and try again, but am not hopeful with an old game like this.
UPDATE: It's steam's fault, thje good old games version works just fine. Far faster than the steam version ever did. phuck you, steam.

This game is not launching at all on Windows 11. It just gives the message "Updating Executable". From the discussion board, it seems like most other buyers have the same problem.
Do not buy the game no longer launches, for some people its occasionally for others it never launches.
I played this on PS3. It was fun, but had a lot of technical issues. I heard the PC version was better, so one of my friends bought me a copy on Steam. However, this version of the game WILL NOT LAUNCH.
I repeat: The Steam version will not launch.
So, how did I manage to play it for 77 mins? Simple, I downloaded a pirated version of the game. That version works perfectly. I then placed those files in the Steam folder, so Steam could launch it. Unfortunately, it isn't working with achievements. (Hence 0 trophies despite 77 mins of gameplay.)
In short, don't wast your money on this broken version. All you're getting is software that's literally unusable.
