Calling All Artists!
The Painter's Playground is a mashup of utility paint program with RPG-leveling up and clicker-inspired gameplay. While there is no fail state, there are certainly measures of success such as creating a painting that commands a high price in the online community, or owning a gallery of coveted works. Whether you are just someone who wants to doodle with a mouse or already have years of experience creating masterpieces with a drawing tablet - there is fun to be had creating and collecting in the zen coastal town of Painter's Port.
Come visit Painter's Port. Stay awhile. You'll be glad you did.
- With slow-burning clicker-inspired progress, you will be peeling away layers for dozens of hours.
- Create works of digital 2D art using a multitude of tools, paints, and canvases. Gain recognition for your efforts through the online community through ‘thumbs up’ artwork appreciation votes and/or selling your work.

i officially will start doing the daily challenge this day forward
give it a try! I very much enjoy coming back to view other people's haphazard artwork. The community is like five people, but it's there.
best pixel art game ever
Based on the other reviews it looks like they gave away a lot of free keys, doesn't it?
Note to self: Next time this dev sells something, see if they're giving it away on another site somewhere before buying it.
On topic, this is a nice little piece of software. Perfect for my needs. I'm a beginner to digital art, want to become a better digital artist and this gives me a little bit of incentive to practice. The more you paint, the better tools can buy and the higher level you get. The higher level you get, the more tools you have access to.
IMO "the art collection" thing isn't well implemented. It would probably be better as part of a minigame, semi-separate from this, where you're investing or something and you've got an AI that trends for certain types of paintings. Otherwise I have no incentive to buy anyone else's stuff. In any event, the community is too small for all that to matter. Don't buy this for any social/community aspect since that seems to be non-existent.
If you're like me, not good enough to create digital art that anyone would want, and just want some incentive to practice then this game is perfect and worth full price. I don't see any other reason to buy it, though.
I am not an artist, With this game I am able to practice and develop an ability for art. I can see what is appreciated in my style and what is not appreciated. Making paintings/drawings and selling them or putting them up in the community center is quite satisfying. I recommend this game for anyone that wants to explore an interest in art while enjoying the artwork of others.
show your own painting to the community
beautiful hand drawn menu backgrounds / watch the trailer
gallery
you can sell your pictures
career mode . earning exp and money
buy new skins brushes canvas colours
zoom in to paint every pixel
a lot of achievments
very satisfiying to see your own creation finished
or just take a look at the community gallery
I was interested to try this game after enjoying Passepartout - The Starving Artist, it seemed to be a depthier and more social painting experience. However, it misses the mark by some distance.
Though the drawing tools are deliberately primitive, they are implemented dreadfully. For example, you'd expect a paintbrush tool to flow continuously as long as you hold the button down, and maybe taper off towards the end of a stroke. Instead it makes a line of blobby circles, there's no brush texture, no flow control. For tablet users, there's no pressure sensitivity or even a vague attempt at it. The fine work pen tool is a single pixel with an anti-aliased "smear" which looks hideous. The spray can is a bog-standard flat colour circular spray as in MSPaint - no spray control, no opacity. The developers state that the game is more of a "painting simulator" but when your base tools are as shabby as these, you've got problems.
The game structure is also suspect - you start with a palette of primary colours and the paintbrush tool, and from there spend your in-game currency to unlock individual colours. Obstensibly you are supposed to "sell" your paintings to other users as a source of income. However, as you amass currency by simply sitting with a picture open, and can exchange currency for renown (the level mechanism needed for more canvas sizes and tools), it's purely a time-gate. There is a sandbox mode with all tools and colours unlocked, but when MSPaint offers a better standard of tools, I was left wondering what the point was.
I've been playing The Painter's Playground since the beta version and bought it immediately when it was released. The first time I sat down to play, I got sucked in and played for over an hour and a half. I'm not really an artist but I have so much fun playing around with different tools and colors, and love looking at all of the amazing art people create. It's a really cool concept to be able to relive the old MS Paint days in an interactive/competitive way. Besides the cool concept of the game, the art is gorgeous. The oil paintings are beautiful and the music is inspiring. It's really original and REALLY fun.
It's a great idea for software, painting software plus some light rpg elements/collectibles and the social aspect but the painting tools are just too basic. I'm not disputing that you could produce really good looking art with them but they are about at the level of AMX Art that I had back in 1985 on the Amstrad CPC 464.
Reply to dev, re: new tools:
It's not so much new tools that I would like, but the existing tools working differently.
At the moment for example the round and square brushes are really, really basic. I mean all they do is draw a square or a circle in full on colour of the current ink. I get that they are supposed to be oil not watercolour so I shouldn't expect fading at the edges or the start of a stroke or transparency such that painting an area then painting over it makes the part that received two strokes have a bolder colour but you need SOMETHING to make it more nuanced, I mean you are literally just blitting a one colour square or rectangle to the screen- it's so basic.
Look at the real oil paint in the program's picture at top right there: you have a texture to the paint on the canvas because the brush is composed of bristles and those same bristles mean that the start and end of a stroke are uneven, not straight.
Also when you blit the square to the screen you could rotate it to match the direction of the stroke rather than just always blitting an upright square.
Also when you move the mouse too fast (which isn't that fast at all) you end up with disconnected circles or squares rather than a stroke.
I don't want new tools if they are going to be implemented in a similar way to the existing tools, I would prefer the existing tools to work more realisticly as detailed above. Not merely for the sake of realism but to get more subtlty into the art.
I love this so far, even if I do feel like it's a tad more expensive than I think most people will be willing to bite for. It's basically MS Paint: Online, where you draw what you want, you put it online for others to view, rate and buy for their personal gallery. You level up, buy new tools and paints and that's pretty much it.
While Passpartout beats this in terms of aesthetic, Painter's Playground gives you a good toolset, an easy way to view/admire others work and is generally a great way to spend some time doodling and improving your mouse-drawing abilities. Highly recommended, but do think the price should be about 80% of what it currently is.
Sit back and relax as you relish in your training days from days past of Mario Paint and Microsoft Paint. This game is essentially the idea of having an online community with a paint program. You can buy, sell, rate, or just observe art. There are plenty of colors to choose from and even if you don't consider yourself artistic (much like myself) you will find enjoyment out of this game for it's simplistic and relaxing pleasures. Is it worth the asking price? I didn't think it was, but this is something I can sit down and imagine myself easily getting 10 hours out of or more. Having a dollar per hour of entertainment for the bare minimal amount of entertainment I will most likely get out of this game is more than fair enough. If you are on the fence, wait for a sale. This game is a great and innovative experience I didn't think I would be into, but was proved wrong pretty quickly.

So, it doesn't work well with my seldom-used graphics tablet, but that's not really the point of this game at all anyways. It's really about working with limited tools to make something you're still happy to call your own. I'd say it's worth your time, if you ever wanted to dabble with drawing/painting, especially with the daily challenge mode to give you ideas and more limits to play with.
Calming, relaxing, yet always interesting and stimulating. Manage your collection, expand your toolset, paint and sketch to earn renown, paint and sketch for fun. Browse the waterfront market for an underpriced masterpiece, or simply spend an afternoon at the community gallery. Yep, you can even just jump in for 10 minutes and paint the daily challenge. There's always something to do.
Even if you're really not that good at painting (me), highly recommended!
9/10
This game is awesome! I really am not much of a painter but The Painter's Playground has made it easy for me to give it a try. One of my favorite aspects of the game is the Challenge of the Day. I really like that people can interpret the daily challenge however they like and share their interpretations with the community. I find this game especially pleasant when I need to take a break to relax. The whole game has a neat art vibe and I would recommend it to both artists and amateurs!
This is not a game. It's a way of life.
If you like painting or drawing then this is for you.
You'll spend your time creating art and sharing it with the community.
Players can view and 'like' art created by others, as well as being able to
sell your art and buy masterpieces that have been created by others.
You can also take part in daily challenges that task you with creating a
painting based on a specific topic or word.
People with some real-life artistic talent may be discouraged by their
results when working with a mouse instead of a real brush or pencil,
but with practice and patience you can create some stunning artwork.
Optionally, you can also purchase pen-style mice designed for artists.
The UI is easy to navigate and understand, and the music is soothing.
It plays like an RPG version of an old Microsoft Paint program, trying
to simulate real painting, without the bells & whistles of programs like
Photoshop. There is no 'undo' button in real life.
There IS an 'undo' feature in this game, but using it will cost you
some of your hard-earned game-currency and respect points.
You'll need that in-game currency because you only start-off with
a basic brush and a few basic colors to use. New brushes, canvases,
and individual colors of paint have to be purchased, and the prices all
become exponentially more expensive as you purchase more supplies.
There's a reason they're called 'starving artists'.
Luckily, your brushes never wear-out, and your paints never runs-out.
This is a neat game where you can paint, slowly unlocking more tools to create stuff and share to others. If you like playing around in MS paint, games where you level or unlock stuff as you progess, or trading art online then you might like this game.
EDIT: My main gaming rig is on SteamOS not windows. I had to switch to an older computer I hadn't used in a while to play this. The dev reached out to help me with a technical issue I had. I had acess to a beta version of this game but ended up buying release version of the game.
Drawing and painting are some of my favorite hobbies. Like most people, I do not have any of my art hanging in a gallery somewhere, but I like the idea of getting at least some of my work out there. This game allows me to do that. Like any new medium, it may take some practice, but it is a fun and easy game that allows you to actually get your work seen by others in the community.
I have been playing the game since alpha and was really excited for it to go on sale. Whether you like to doodle or are a serious artist, I think this game has something to offer.
I am not a very artistic person, but I love The Painter's Playground! Really cool idea for a game and fun to play. I like that you can play two ways, by creating beautiful paintings (if you're talented, unlike me) or by purchasing paintings for your collection and acting as an art curator. The developers are awesome and highly invested in making this game fun. I had the pleasure of beta-testing it which was an outstanding experience. Well worth the price too!
